as we dream by the fire
Everything is better now that Alex Manes gets to come home to Michael Guerin.
For @cosmiceverafter. Jess, you wanted established relationship fluff, smut by the fire, and a little bit of sci-fi. I hope you enjoy this. Also, I love you, and was so excited to get an excuse to give you some flirst! @malexsanta
Warnings for: Smut. Lots of smut. Also, I took the cabin back and stole Buffy.
***
Alex can’t help but smile when he returns home to find the walkway clear, in spite of the snow storm they’d had. The cabin is lit up, looking warm and inviting in a way it never had when it was just him living there. He’s had a long day at work, but it’s been made easier knowing he gets to come home to Michael.
He carefully makes his way up the stairs and to the door, opening it to find that Michael has been very busy since he left this morning. There’s a tree in the corner, already decorated, and strings of twinkly lights are spread across the living room, stuck to the ceiling. That and the fire give it a warm, welcoming glow.
He quickly closes the door behind him when he hears Buffy’s nails clacking on the hardwood floor as she waddles toward him. He is quick to give her what she wants, bending down and picking her up, asking softly, “Wanna go find your dad?”
The clattering sound from the kitchen tells him exactly where to look. He slowly walks over there, pausing in the doorway to enjoy the sight of Michael bent over and checking whatever is in the oven, jeans hugging the curve of his ass.
“How did your exam go?” Alex asks. He’s so proud of Michael, that he’s working so hard to make his life what he wants it to be, that he’s going after the degree he needs to do what he wants with his life, now that he’s decided to make earth his home. Now that he’s decided to build a home with Alex.
Michael straightens, closes the oven, and turns around, a smile already on his face.as he crosses the kitchen to meet Alex.
Michael’s touch is gentle as he cups Alex’s jaw, pressing a soft kiss against his lips. He only pulls away a few inches before saying, “Aced it. Dinner should be ready in a few minutes. Wanna change into something more comfortable?”
Alex nods, moving in to claim another kiss, enjoying the way the rough scrape of Michael’s stubble combines with the softness of his touch. And then he lets Michael return his attention to the stove before he sets Buffy down and turns to head toward the bedroom he and Michael share.
His favorite pair of sweatpants are already laid out on the bed, along with one of Michael’s hoodies, so Alex doesn’t spend any time looking for clothes. He just sits on the edge of his bed and carefully removes his uniform, folding it before he places it on the bed next to him. He keeps his prosthetic on, more for ease of movement than anything else and pulls the sweatpants on over it, enjoying how soft they are. Then he grabs Michael’s black UNM hoodie, lifting it to his face to inhale the scent of rain clinging to the fabric. He smiles at the thought that Michael probably wore it all day just so it would smell like him, just so Alex could wear it and draw comfort from the smell.
Alex puts the hoodie on and places his uniform on top of the clothing basket before heading toward the door, turning off the bedroom light, and going back toward the kitchen.
When he reaches the living room, he finds Michael already heading out of the kitchen, plates in his hands, glasses of water floating in front of him. The glasses land on the coffee table moments before Michael sets the plates down.
“Thank you,” Alex says, sitting on the couch next to Michael, smiling at the way Michael presses right up next to him even though there’s plenty of room.
“For what?” Michael asks, already picking up a fry and popping it into his mouth.
“Dinner? Shoveling all that snow? Decorating the place? It looks amazing, by the way. Taking care of me the way you do?” Alex replies, finally taking a bite of the burger Michael made for him.
Michael finishes chewing and swallowing the bite he takes of his own burger before he answers with a shrug, “Had the day off. Needed something to do. And I know how busy you’ve been at work.”
He really has been busy with work, barely finding enough time to come home and sleep, much less time to spend with Michael, outside of curling up beside him in bed every night. Michael hasn’t once complained about it and Alex knows he needs to find a way to make it up to him. “Well, you have me all weekend,” he offers. “How do you want to spend it?”
Michael just smirks at him, looking him up and down, gaze heated. And then, much to his surprise, “Wanna go stargazing?”
Alex smiles at the thought, all the nights they spent in the back of Michael’s truck when they were teenagers, looking up at the stars as they caught their breath, hands exploring each other’s bodies even after they were spent. “As long as you promise to keep me warm,” he answers with a smile. Really, it’s far too cold for it, but, if that’s what Michael wants, well, Alex will give it to him.
Michael gestures up at the ceiling and Alex looks up, gasping at the way the lights seem to be organized into constellations that Alex recognizes all too well from all the nights he’s gone stargazing in Michael’s truck. “It’s too cold to take you stargazing outside, so-”
“You brought the stars to me,” Alex breathes, awed.
“Yeah. Figured as soon as you had some time off, we could curl up in front of the fire together? If you’d like?”
“I’d like,” Alex grins in response, pulling Michael in for a kiss, fingers tangling in Michael’s soft curls. He can feel Michael’s smile against his mouth for a moment before he’s being pressed back against the couch and one of Michael’s hands is sliding under his shirt, fingers brushing over his skin.
Alex reaches one hand down, unzipping Michael’s jeans and reaching inside, unsurprised to find he isn’t wearing boxers. He wraps his hand around Michael’s dick, feeling it get harder in his grasp.
Michael lets out a whine against Alex’s mouth, his hips moving against Alex’s hand. Alex takes his time, thumb brushing over the head of Michael’s cock, fingers sliding up and down the base.
Michael’s kisses become more desperate as Alex’s hand moves up and down. He twists his wrist as best as he can at this awkward angle, pulling a moan out from between Michael’s lips.
Alex knows it’s been too long since he’s touched Michael like this, since he’s had the time for much more than work and sleep, so he plans to make up for lost time tonight, to make it up to Michael.
“Oh, fuck, Alex,” Michael cries out, pulling away from Alex’s lips to bury his face against Alex’s neck. Alex can feel his hot breath, coming in desperate pants against his skin, little whining noises escaping him, turning louder, into moans.
And then Michael’s hips are stuttering against his hand and he’s coming, making a mess of his jeans. But he doesn’t seem to mind, merely rolling to the side as he collapses, taking his weight off of Alex and pulling Alex with him.
Alex just brushes Michael’s curls as he catches his breath. And then, finally, Michael asks, “What was that for?”
“For being you,” Alex replies, kissing him again. “For loving me the way you do. For being the best man I know.” He pauses before adding, “And because I wanted to.”
Michael shrugs, “Just glad you let me love you.” He pauses for a moment, smile turning into a smirk, “Speaking of ‘loving you’...”
“Later,” Alex smiles, brushing Michael’s jaw with his thumb. “We should finish dinner before it gets too cold.”
Michael laughs, sitting up and then standing. “Be right back.”
Alex nods, going to the kitchen to wash his own hands before returning to his dinner.
Not that much later, Michael is back, dressed in a pair of boxers and a t-shirt and carrying a bunch of blankets and pillows. He sets them aside, finishing dinner first.
Alex slowly works on eating his burger and pretends not to notice Michael sneaking bites of food to Buffy who always seems to know to lay at Michael’s feet when they eat.
And then, after they’re done, Alex watches as Michael arranges the pillows and blankets in front of the fire, making a comfortable nest of sorts for the pair of them.
Alex grabs their plates and takes them to the kitchen, loading things into their dishwasher as Michael works.
When he returns to the living room, Buffy is already curled up and snoring on her bed, happy and full from the second supper Michael provided her. Michael is finished with his project, quickly jumping to his feet, rushing over to Alex, and taking his hand.
Alex smiles at the way Michael pulls him toward the nest of blankets and pillows, letting Michael help him get down on the floor in front of the crackling fire.
He lays back, looking up at the ceiling, Michael’s hand still in his. Michael intertwines their fingers and lifts their joined hands up to his lips, giving the back of Alex’s hand a feather-light kiss.
“Thank you,” Alex says softly. “For all of this. For being you. I still don’t know how I got this lucky,” he admits.
“You want to get lucky again?” Michael asks and Alex can hear the smirk in his voice, knows exactly the look he has on his face.
Alex laughs and turns to face Michael, who is already looking at him, a fond expression on his face.
Alex takes his time, taking in the man he loves. The messy curls, the warm whiskey colored eyes, the slightly crooked nose and full lips. He’s gorgeous. And, for some reason, he loves Alex. He’s chosen Alex, in spite of everything.
“I love you, you know,” Alex finally says.
Michael’s entire face seems to light up at that, just like it does every time Alex says it. And then, “I love you too.”
Alex smiles in response before leaning in and pressing his lips to Michael’s.
Their kisses start out gentle, soft, hands brushing over clothes, mouths just tasting each other. Michael presses Alex onto his back and Alex pulls him on top of him, legs parting for Michael to settle between them.
He can feel Michael’s rough fingertips just brushing against his jaw, his warmth on top of him, and Alex feels safe and loved and home the way he never has anywhere else. Nowhere but with this man in his arms.
Michael’s kisses are addictive and Alex can’t help but chase his mouth as he pulls away, just long enough to pull his shirt over his head. And then his lips are against Alex’s again, exactly where he wants them.
Alex lets himself trace his fingers down Michael’s back, marveling at the way Michael shivers at his touch. He reaches further, under the edge of Michael’s boxers, tracing over the cleft of his ass.
Michael’s hips press further against his own in response, his hard length pressing against Alex’s, that pressure and friction he desperately wants more of.
And then Michael’s fingers are reaching under his hoodie, pulling it up, helping Alex get it off, before tossing it aside and out of the way, his hands and mouth already exploring Alex’s bare chest.
Alex lets out a moan as Michael takes one of his nipples into his mouth, teeth scraping against sensitive skin before his tongue circles it.
Alex presses his hips upward, grinding against Michael, desperate to urge him onward, but Michael seems happy to take his time, one hand tracing Alex’s muscles, tracing down to the edge of his sweatpants but not quite dipping under, mouth following the same path.
The firelight gives Michael’s skin a golden glow, only making him look more handsome when he pulls away, his look almost questioning and Alex can only nod, can only agree to give Michael whatever he wants.
And Michael dives back down, pulling Alex’s sweatpants off quickly. His eyes are on Alex’s cock like it’s some delicious treat, like he can’t wait to get his mouth on him.
“Later,” Alex promises, smiling when Michael looks up at him. “I want you inside of me first.”
Michael nods, moving his attention downward again. His fingers are gentle on Alex’s leg as he removes his prosthetic, setting it, the sock, and the liner aside, leaving Alex completely bare on the soft pile of blankets. Michael looks at Alex like he’s something precious, like he’s a gift he can’t believe he gets to have. “You’re beautiful,” he breathes.
Alex’s breath catches at that and he wants to tell Michael no, that Michael is the beautiful one, but then Michael’s mouth is on him, tongue swiping over the head of his cock, and he’s letting out a strangled moan.
He can hear the cap of the lube bottle popping open and then, what feels like moments later, Michael is guiding his hips upward, hooking his knees over his shoulders, and he feels one finger circling his hole.
He forces himself to stay as still as he can as Michael takes his time, sliding one finger in and out. His legs are shaking by the time Michael eases a second finger in, so gently and carefully, as if he’s fragile, breakable, something to be cared for.
It feels like an eternity before Michael is sliding three fingers in and out of him, scissoring them, brushing against his prostate just to tease. And then, finally, withdrawing, coating his length with lube and moving upward.
Alex hooks his knees over Michael’s hips as best he can as Michael guides himself slowly into Alex, stilling when he’s in him to the hilt.
Alex reaches up, letting his fingers tangle in Michael’s hair, pulling him down for a desperate, hungry kiss, before Michael starts moving slowly, taking his time, Alex moving with him.
Michael pulls away and those beautiful eyes are on Alex’s, so full of love and desire and it takes Alex’s breath away.
Then Michael is pushing against his prostate and Alex moans, hands desperately moving down Michael’s back, fingernails digging to his skin, trying to urge him to move faster, harder, as he relentlessly drives Alex toward that edge.
And then Michael is reaching between them, his eyes still on Alex’s as his hand wraps around Alex’s length, moving in time with his thrusts and Alex is shouting as he comes, spilling all over the both of them.
Michael pauses, but Alex rocks his hips, urging him onward, continuing to move until Michael is coming inside of him and collapsing on his chest, rolling to the side, pulling Alex with him, so that Alex is laying on top of him.
Michael’s hands are gentle, moving up and down his back as they both catch their breath. “Wow, that was…”
“It always is,” Alex replies with a smile. “As long as it’s with you.”
“Can we just spend Christmas like this? You and me in front of the fire? No clothes allowed?” Michael asks.
“I would love that,” Alex replies. “But I think your sister wouldn’t even hesitate before busting in here and dragging us to her party. Clothed or not.”
“You’re probably right,” Michael grumbles.
“If you behave yourself, I’ll make sure you’re rewarded,” Alex teases, already thinking of places in Isobel’s home they can sneak off to for a quickie.
“Deal,” Michael replies.
When Michael starts to move, Alex rolls off of him, laying back against the soft blankets again.
Michael leans over to press a quick kiss against Alex’s lips before promising, “I’ll be right back,” and standing.
Alex lets his eyes sweep over Michael as he walks away, appreciating the strong muscles of his back, his rounded ass and the way it moves when he walks, the muscular thighs and calves, all glowing in the light of the fire.
He relaxes back against the blankets, looking up at the lights arranged on the ceiling. They’re smaller, prettier than the ones at the UFO Emporium, but it still reminds him of them, of that day Michael kissed him for the first time.
Alex sits up again when he hears Michael’s bare feet on the hardwood floor. He looks delicious, that chiseled chest covered in hair trailing downward toward his gorgeous cock.
“Like what you see?” Michael gives him a teasing grin before lowering himself to the blanket, using a damp rag to clean Alex up, following that with a towel before tossing them aside. It’s only then that Alex notices what he’s holding in his other hand, too distracted by Michael to notice anything else.
“Did you make cookies?” Alex asks, eyes on the ziplock bag Michael has in hand. It’s filled with what look like gingersnaps.
Michael shoves one in his mouth before answering around it, “Nope. Gregory stopped by and dropped them off. Guess he was on his way to visit Isobel. Said something about us being future brother-in-laws. You think he and Isobel are that serious?”
Alex shrugs, reaching for the bag and taking it from Michael as Michael sits, reaching in for a cookie of his own. “It’s pretty new. I know Gregory thinks she’s amazing and everything.” He takes a breath, looking at Michael who is busy rearranging the blankets around him, before he says, “I actually think he was talking about us.”
Michael’s head jerks up and his eyes meet Alex’s. “You’d really want to marry me someday?”
Alex scoots closer, grabbing Michael’s hand in his, “I thought we both knew that’s where we’re heading.”
Michael’s entire face lights up, food forgotten as he presses Alex back against the blankets, lips pressing against his. He pulls away just a couple of inches and Alex opens his eyes to find Michael looking at him like he’s the most precious thing in the universe. Michael’s thumb is stroking against his jaw. He doesn’t speak at first, just watches Alex silently for a long time. And then, “There’s something I wanted to try. If you’re okay with it?”
Alex nods, reaching up to brush Michael’s curls out of his eyes.
“I’ve been practicing the whole handprint thing and, well, I was thinking… There’s no one else I’d want to share it with. If you want.”
Alex can’t quite find the words to explain how much Michael’s trust in him means to him, so he just reaches for the hand that’s on his jaw and slowly moves it, pressing it against his chest, “Yes.”
“Yeah?” Michael grins.
“Yes,” Alex smiles at him. “Want to try now?”
Michael nods quickly, moving his hand back up to cup Alex’s jaw and lean in for another quick kiss. And then Alex feels Michael’s hand moving down his neck to his chest, resting over his heart.
Michael pulls away far enough to meet Alex’s eyes and Alex keeps his eyes on Michael’s, even as he feels the warmth from Michael’s hand grow.
He feels it slowly at first, just love washing over him, washing through him, filling all the cracks in his soul. Slow at first and then overwhelming.
Before he realizes it, Michael’s hands are on his face, gently wiping away tears that he hadn’t even known he was crying.
When he’s finally able to speak, Alex asks, “You really feel that way about me?”
Michael nods, smiling down at him, tears in his eyes as well.
Alex reaches up, pressing his hand against Michael’s chest, over his heart, “I wish I could show you how much I love you.”
Michael’s smile turns into a grin. “You do. Every day.” He presses his hand back against Alex’s chest. “You do.”
And then Michael floods Alex with his memories. He sees himself when he was a teenager, playing his guitar, the very guitar Michael had later stolen, in the music room. And he feels Michael’s wonder. He sees himself walking away after offering the shed to Michael and he feels Michael’s surprise and confusion, feels it change to awe and love when Alex hands him his brother’s guitar. He feels that love settle in his chest when Michael smiles at him in the UFO Emporium, going in for a second kiss.
And then memory after memory, filled with love and acceptance and wonder all at once.
When Michael is done showing him everything, he asks, “Do you see now? How you gave me love and kindness, how you showed me what it looks like? How wonderful your species can be?”
Alex nods, pulling him in for a hug, burying his face against Michael’s neck, “I love you so much more than I could ever show.”
They just hold each other like that for a long time, eventually settling back on the mess of blankets again, side by side, hand in hand, looking up at the lights.
Eventually, Alex moves to his side and turns his attention back to Michael, pressing a kiss against his shoulder before saying, “I think you promised to ravish me again.”
Michael just laughs, pulling Alex closer, pulling him on top of him, pressing his lips against Alex’s.
They take their time, just kissing, gently at first, eventually growing more needy and insistent as Michael’s hips start moving against Alex’s own.
He can feel Michael growing hard against him, can feel himself doing the same in response.
And then Michael is flipping him onto his back, pressing one more kiss against his lips before reaching for the lube.
His eyes are dark and hooded, so warm and beautiful, focused on Alex’s as he lifts himself off Alex just slightly, coating his fingers with lube.
Alex watches as Michael slides one finger against his own rim, pressing it inside of himself. He is always beautiful, but it’s overwhelming, watching him lit up by the firelight, dick hard, eyes on Alex, working himself open.
Alex sits up, leaning forward to touch, wrapping one hand around Michael’s cock, sliding slowly over Michael’s sensitive skin.
Michael lets out a whimper of pleasure and Alex leans forward further, pressing a kiss against his stomach.
“You’re beautiful,” he breathes, delighting in the way Michael’s breath catches at the words. He can feel that overwhelming love and desire, both from himself and from Michael and part of him wants to just flip Michael over and take him apart against the blankets. But this is what Michael wants and Alex is content to give him that, to watch him get himself ready, to let him take the lead tonight.
And then Michael is moving, lifting up and moving closer, lowering himself down and guiding Alex inside him.
Michael’s eyes are closed, his mouth open, his forehead pressed against Alex’s as he adjusts. And Alex just watches, lets him take his time, no matter how hard it is to hold still when he’s inside of Michael.
Michael starts moving slowly, eyes opening and meeting Alex’s. It’s rare for him to take his time like this. Usually Alex is the one frustrating him by taking things slowly, but Michael seems happy to keep moving slowly, letting out little whines every time his hips meet Alex’s. “Oh, fuck, Alex,” he finally says. “Feels so good.”
And Alex can feel it himself, can feel that pleasure building slowly. And it doesn’t matter whether what he’s feeling is his own pleasure or Michael’s. Or if it’s both of theirs.
Michael’s hands are on his shoulders, digging into his skin, holding on tightly as he moves. Alex moves one of his own hands to Michael’s back, holding him steady as he wraps his other hand around Michael’s cock, letting Michael fuck into it as he rides Alex’s cock.
Alex adjusts just a fraction, changing the position of his hips just a tiny bit and Michael cries out with pleasure that Alex can feel like it’s his own.
Michael’s movements are faster, desperate, until he’s flying over the edge, pulling Alex with him as he comes all over them both.
Alex somehow has the presence of mind to reach out for the rag and towel Michael set aside earlier, cleaning the both of them up before pulling Michael to collapse on top of him, just holding him while they both catch their breath and come back to the world around them.
Eventually, Michael moves, only going far enough to lay down next to Alex, arms still pressed together, his hand sliding into Alex’s.
Alex smiles as Michael lifts their joined hands, pointing at patterns of lights on the ceiling, telling him about the constellation they’re modeled after. He tries to listen, tries to focus on what Michael’s saying, but it’s not long before he’s drifting off to the comforting sound of Michael’s voice, the warmth of his body beside him, and the feeling of Michael’s love for him washing over him.

“Hey, Alex?”
“Yeah?” Alex asks without looking up. He’d moved his laptop to the kitchen table at Michael’s request, but he still has a little work to finish before he’s free for the evening.
“Can you grab me the cumin from the spice cabinet?” Michael asks, and when Alex tears his gaze away from the screen, he sees Michael staring back, head turned over his shoulder to look at him as he stirs a pot of something on the stove that smells absolutely delicious.
“Sure, one sec,” he says, typing the last few lines of code as quick as he can.
When he’s done, he shuts his laptop and sets it to the side before straightening up and heading to the spice cabinet. He digs around a little, shifting bottles here and there to try to find what Michael needs, but he comes up empty.
“Bottom left, behind the paprika,” Michael supplies helpfully after a minute of Alex’s fruitless shuffling.
Alex looks over and sure enough, there, behind the paprika, right where Michael said it would be, is the cumin. He isn’t sure when exactly it was that Michael made the transition from feeling like he wasn’t welcome to stay the night to being intimately familiar with the inside of his spice cabinet, but the fact that he feels so at home in Alex’s space makes affection bloom warm in Alex’s chest as he plucks the bottle off the shelf.
“Thanks,” Michael smiles when he hands him the bottle, and Alex is helpless against the impulse to lean in and kiss him.
Michael welcomes the kiss without hesitation, humming softly against his mouth as he turns to face him more directly, the bottle of cumin still gripped between his fingers. Alex smiles, a little smug that he’s able to steal Michael’s attention so easily even when he’s in the middle of something.
It’s not until he feels the tip of Michael’s tongue flick against his bottom lip that Alex pulls back, not so eager to be the reason Michael burns whatever he’s cooking when they inevitably drive each other to distraction.
“Any time,” Alex says when he’s managed to put a few inches of space between them.
Michael blinks at him, his brain taking a moment to come back online, before he huffs a laugh, shaking his head.
“Tease,” Michael accuses lightly, and Alex rolls his eyes affectionately even as he steps behind him and wraps his arms around his waist.
“I don’t think I’ve earned that title,” Alex tells him in a low voice, lips barely an inch from the shell of Michael’s ear. “Not yet, anyway.”
Michael groans softly at the thought and Alex can’t help but chuckle and press a fleeting kiss to his cheek.
“Are you done with work?” Michael asks, leaning back against his chest a little in a way that makes Alex feel warm and protective. He knows it’s impractical, but he could hold Michael like this all day.
“Mhmm,” Alex hums. When Michael doesn’t say anything else, Alex hooks his chin over his shoulder and watches as he adds some cumin to the ground beef browning in the pot, not bothering to measure it. “What are you making?”
“Chili,” Michael answers, stirring the meat to incorporate all the spices. “You want to try some?”
Alex’s stomach growls audibly at the question, making them both laugh.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” Michael says, and after a moment of more stirring to make sure the beef is all browned, Michael reaches into the cutlery drawer to his left and takes out a clean spoon without looking. He dips it into the pot, scoops out some seasoned ground beef, and feeds it to Alex over his shoulder.
Alex can’t suppress the pleased sound he makes when he tastes it. The beef is delicious—savory and a little salty with a strong kick of spice that lingers on his tongue.
“What do you think?” Michael asks, twisting in his arms to try to see his reaction.
“It’s really good,” Alex tells him, and he doesn’t need to see Michael’s face to know he’s warming under his praise, but it’s always nice to watch it happen anyway. If Michael isn’t careful, Alex will need to kiss him again.
“How’s the spice?” Michael asks. “I could add some more jalapeños before I add the rest of the ingredients if you want.”
“No, the spice is perfect,” Alex insists.
Michael beams at him before he turns back to the pot. With one parting peck to the back of Michael’s head, Alex steps away and gives him some space to work, leaning casually against the side of the fridge while he watches Michael push the spices toward the back of the counter and start assembling the remaining ingredients.
“How’d you get so good at this anyway?” Alex wonders as Michael squeezes in some tomato paste, once again without needing to measure it.
“What?” Michael asks, eyes on the pot while he mixes it in.
“Cooking,” Alex explains. “You’re so confident you’re not even following a recipe.”
“Yeah, I am,” Michael says, and Alex hasn’t seen a piece of paper or anything lying around with instructions on it, so Michael must have just memorized it, which is… not surprising for Michael as much as it is crazy for Alex to imagine doing himself. “I’m just… being creative in my interpretation of it.”
“So…” Alex starts, cocking his head, “you looked at the ingredients and now you’re winging it?”
“A bit, yeah,” Michael admits.
“Damn,” Alex says with the gravity that deserves.
“It’s really not that impressive,” Michael insists.
“Improvising a dish you read the ingredients for one time isn’t impressive?” Alex asks incredulously.
Michael is silent a moment while he thinks about it.
“I don’t know, I guess I’m just used to it,” Michael says at last. “I didn’t exactly have a recipe book growing up, so I’d just do the best I could with what I could get my hands on, which didn’t always turn out so good.”
“Yeah?” Alex asks, curious to hear more.
“Mhmm. Learned the hard way not to use ketchup as a replacement for tomato sauce.”
“Oh my god,” Alex says, pulling a face at the thought of pouring a squirt of Heinz over some pasta.
“Yeah,” Michael laughs. “Not my finest moment.”
“Did you cook a lot when you were younger?” Alex asks, surprised he’s never heard about any of this before. In high school and that summer that followed it, he and Michael would usually meet up either in the afternoon when Alex had to be home by dinner, or far later when Alex could sneak out in the middle of the night, so food wasn’t really something they’d shared or talked about a lot.
“Depends where I was,” Michael answers. “The addicts never had any food to cook and the Fundamentalists were big on ‘family dinners,’ but cooking was ‘women’s work’ so I wasn’t allowed in the kitchen. When I was on my own though, I bought what was on sale or, well—” Michael cuts himself off, shifting his eyes in Alex’s direction before he sighs and says, “Let’s just say I had to get creative with my ingredients for a while in more ways than one.”
“You don’t have to talk in euphemisms, Michael,” Alex tells him kindly, reaching out for his hand. “I know you did what you had to do to survive. I’m glad you did,” he says, and he means it. He might have been judgmental about Michael’s criminal history at first, but they’re a long way from that disastrous evening at the Drive-In.
Michael tangles their fingers together and squeezes once, his smile a little brittle.
“Anyway, yeah,” Michael continues, “once I got access to a fire pit I was actually able to teach myself how to cook.”
“Wait, seriously?” Alex asks, eyebrows lifting in sudden surprise. “The fire pit?”
Now it’s Michael’s turn to look confused.
“Alex, I’ve made you dinner on the fire pit like a hundred times,” Michael says.
“No, I know, it’s just—“ Alex pauses, searching for the words. “I guess I never thought that that was how you learned how to cook.”
“Well, Sanders let me use his kitchen sometimes too,” Michael says.
“Right,” Alex nods. Michael’s mentioned before that Sanders is the reason why his omelets are nearly as good as Arturo’s. “So after cooking like that for so long, winging it is easy?”
“I guess, yeah,” Michael shrugs. “And, really, at the end of the day, cooking’s just chemistry—except things don’t generally explode as much when you mess up.”
“Mm, I don’t know about that,” Alex disagrees. “You should’ve seen me try to make brownies when I was a kid.”
“That bad?” Michael cringes.
“Oh yeah,” Alex answers. He’ll never forget that icy chill that ran down his spine when he’d seen what he’d done to the inside of the oven. If it wasn’t for Greg’s help cleaning everything up before their father got home, Alex probably would have been torn to pieces.
“Well, if you were making brownies, that’s baking. Cooking’s much more forgiving than baking,” Michael says. He gives Alex an assessing look before he says, “Come here, I’ll show you.”
Alex hesitantly closes the short distance between them, helped along by Michael tugging him by the hem of his shirt.
Michael must catch the reticence on his face because a second later he says, “Oh come on, you got this. I’ll talk you through it.”
“If you say so,” Alex sighs. “What do you want me to do?”
“Well, you can start by opening the cans of crushed tomatoes and kidney beans,” Michael says.
Alex laughs. “Okay, I think I can manage that.”
In the time it takes Michael to run to the fridge to grab a bottle of beer and an opened container of beef broth leftover from the stroganoff he’d made the other day, Alex is already done.
“Do I add all of it?” Alex asks, holding the can of beans over the pot.
“Not those yet,” Michael says. “They need to be drained and rinsed. Do you know where the colander is?”
That Alex does know—he may be culinarily challenged, but he’s got his shit together enough to know how to boil water and follow the directions on a box of Kraft like every other red-blooded American.
He fishes it out from the cabinet under the counter in front of him and takes it to the sink along with the can of beans.
“So I just toss them in the colander and rinse them?” Alex double-checks.
“Yup!” Michael answers, upending the bottle of beer over the pot for a few counts before taking a long drink. “Bring ‘em over when you’re done.”
Alex rinses the beans thoroughly and shakes them over the sink to get rid of the excess water before carrying the colander back over to where Michael is standing by the stove. There’s a cutting board set up with a knife and two green bell peppers when he gets there. The can of crushed tomatoes he opened is already empty, so Michael must have tossed that in too while he was waiting.
“Do you want to dice the peppers?” Michael asks.
“Um,” Alex says, looking at them suspiciously. “Sure?”
“Here, I’ll do one and you can do the other,” Michael says, stepping in front of Alex to get at the cutting board. “Just watch what I do.”
Alex stands at his side and watches intently.
“You’ll want to start by cutting the stems and the bottoms off,” Michael tells him as he slices them off one of the peppers. “Then you should slice it down the middle and remove the seeds and this white stuff inside.” Michael runs his knife along the inner flesh of the pepper, cutting away the white until there’s nothing but green. “And now we can dice it.”
Michael cuts the pepper into strips and then pushes them together horizontally so he can dice them with another swift pass of his knife, leaving the pepper in uniform squares.
“Okay, now it’s your turn,” Michael says, moving aside so Alex can take his place.
Alex picks up the knife and follows Michael’s instructions. He thinks he’ll be able to manage it okay, as long as he doesn’t let Michael’s gentle encouragement in his ear distract him too much—He knows his way around a knife after all, albeit in very different circumstances.
He’s doing fine until he gets to the actual dicing part. His fingers can’t seem to keep a steady enough grip on the pepper strips to make the kind of uniform cuts that Michael had been able to execute.
“Hang on,” Michael murmurs, and a moment later Alex feels him warm and solid against his back.
Alex swallows as Michael’s palms travel down the length of his forearms, not stopping until he covers Alex’s hands with his own. He feels caged in like this, pressed up against the counter a little, Michael’s breath fanning over the back of his neck, and suddenly Alex’s thoughts are very far away from the chili he’s supposed to be helping Michael make.
“You want to let the knife do the work here,” Michael tells him, grabbing Alex’s attention once again. “It’s sharp, it’ll slice through it much easier if you don’t add so much pressure.” He guides Alex’s hand as he slices through a row of peppers, the motion much smoother now. “See? Much easier that way. Now try it on your own.”
Michael drops his hands to rest on Alex’s hips as he watches over his shoulder. Alex tries not to be distracted by the way his fingers are edging up under the hem of his shirt, the way Michael’s low hum of approval when he passes the knife over the peppers again makes his heart beat faster.
He thinks he has it handled until Michael drawls in his ear, “Perfect. Just like that, Alex. Nice, even strokes,” and Alex nearly chops his own finger off.
“Michael,” he says sharply, head spinning a little.
“Hm?” the bastard hums lazily, like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
“Are you fucking with me?” Alex asks, and he can feel Michael’s chest rumble with laughter against his back.
“Not yet,” Michael says, nuzzling into the side of his head a little to press a kiss over his pounding pulse, and Alex has to let go of the knife before he really does hurt himself.
He can feel Michael smile against his neck when he takes a deep, calming breath, bracing his hands on the counter.
“Go wash your hands,” Alex tells him, needing a minute to clear his head, “and then tell me how to finish this.”
“Yes, sir,” Michael says, and then the hands on his hips and the warmth at his back are gone.
Once he hears the sink running, Alex makes short work of the peppers and adds them to the pot.
Michael comes back a short moment later and stirs the diced peppers into the pot with one hand as he fiddles with the burner knob with the other. Alex leaves him to it while he washes his own hands.
“Perfect,” Michael comments when he’s satisfied. “Now it just needs to simmer for an hour.”
Alex doesn’t waste any time stepping back into Michael’s space, not even bothering to dry his hands on the dish towel Michael left by the sink. If Michael is upset about the water soaking into the thin fabric of his t-shirt where Alex grips his waist, he doesn’t say so. Instead, his hands slide up Alex’s shoulders, one of them finding a home in the short hair at the back of his neck.
“A whole hour, huh?” Alex asks, eyes drifting down toward Michael’s mouth.
“Mhmm,” Michael hums slowly, a coy smile spreading over his lips.
“That’s a lot of time,” Alex muses. “What do you think we should do with it?”
Michael’s grip on Alex’s hair tightens just a little. “I’ve got a few ideas.”
Michael manages to set the timer on the stove before Alex drags him back to his bedroom.
It’s a good thing, too. By the time the alarm goes off, they’ve worked up quite the appetite.

Christmas Cookies & Holiday Hearts
"You know, this will be our first Christmas together. Officially."
As Michael says the words, Alex glances over at him, and his heart skips a beat. How is it that his alien still manages to take his breath away after so much time?
Alex smiles and gradually runs his fingertips up and down Michael's strong arm, feeling the smooth skin there. "You're right, even though I know you've tried to get me under a mistletoe for years."
"I mean, yeah...." Michael beams. His tan shoulders shrug as he kisses Alex's chest softly, "You aren't wrong, babe. Who could deny those luscious lips?"
Michael's fingers slowly trail up Alex's chest, which currently has imprints of his lover's glowing handprints left lovingly due to their intimacy with each other.
When he sees them, Alex knows with certainty that their love can move mountains and is capable of expanding through galaxies.
As Alex feels the calluses of Michael's hands on his body and now his lips, he closes his eyes to embrace the effect it manages to bring. It's as if a spark of electricity courses through his veins and ignites his soul. That's the only way he can explain it.
Nothing ever compares to this—what they have together in these silent moments. Alex will always cherish this peace with his loved one.
After a moment of soft loving caresses, Michael's smile disappears. Alex knows he's traveling deeper into that intelligent mind of his, the way he always seems to do these days. "But here's the thing, I want it to be special, meaningful. Christmases were never something to be excited about for me, you know? Just another shitty day."
Alex holds his breath but nods. Unfortunately, he knows precisely what Michael means. Though different, the events of their past, parallel each other in many forms worth forgetting. Alex's upbringing was painful in its way. Still, Alex wishes Michael, his sweet, brilliant alien, could have been spared the misery.
All Michael Guerin has ever wanted was a home, to feel like he belongs on this planet, and Alex wants to spend the rest of his life giving him precisely that.
"So, you've never done anything memorable during the holiday season? Not once?"
Michael raises an eyebrow as if to announce come on, but then he suddenly laughs as a memory resurfaces, "Well...there was that one time Sanders and I attempted to bake Christmas cookies for his customers."
Alex smirks as he imagines how that scene played out. A younger Michael Guerin, who was in-and-out of the foster system, and the older man with one good eye, baking in a small trailer. "And uh, how did that turn out?" Even though he can take a wild guess.
Michael shakes his head as his golden curls bounce and sway. He holds up his arm, "Badly, I have a battle scar from the process."
There is a slight white mark on the inside of Michael's arm, which looks a bit like a four-leaf clover. Alex has always wondered about it. "Damn, and here I thought that was a lucky birthmark."
"Darlin', the only good luck charm in my life is you. Never forget that." Alex feels his heart flutter in his chest at Michael's words, and Michael gently kisses Alex's forehead. But before Alex can return the sentiment, his love continues, "But yeah, Sanders' oven was old as hell at the time, and I guess no one taught me not to stick my whole damn arm right on the rack. Sanders felt awful about it. Poor guy."
"Were the cookies at least good?"
There's a sparkle in Michael's eyes as he says, "You know what? They were. I need to find that damn recipe—it has to be somewhere. Then maybe I can take the old man one, even though you are the better baker." His fingers lace together with Alex's, and Alex gives him a loving squeeze.
"You're right, I am," Alex smirks as he wiggles his eyebrows. "But I would be happy to help you. Sanders would seriously love that!"
Alex looks down at their hands still together. He is so happy that Michael now spends so much time with Walt. It is not a boss-employee type of relationship, but more of a familial one. After everything they had both been through, this progression felt natural. And if he's honest, Alex loves seeing Michael finally opening up to others, the way he does with Alex.
Michael nods and grins, "Done." His caramel eyes gaze at Alex, and he turns over to his side. "But I want new memories, too. Truthfully, besides the cookie disaster, I've never had anyone to share the holidays with."
Again, Alex knows all too deeply what he means, "I know the feeling, my love. I've always admired Christmas from a distance, and it seemed...well, always on the outside looking in." He squeezes Michael's hand tightly through the sheets once more, "I'm thankful to have you by my side. We're both on this journey together."
"Baby, I can't think of anyone else I'd rather share the memories with." Michael brings the back of Alex's hand to his lips, "Always and forever."
****
The next day, Alex and Michael decide to go Christmas shopping for their friends, who were more like their found family at this point.
Roswell had turned festive overnight, and it warms Alex's heart as if he were sitting by the crackling embers.
Truthfully, he loves the magic that comes with Christmas: The twinkling lights aglow; the cheerful, upbeat, and often, repetitive music; the smiling faces of those who don't wait till the last minute to shop; the smell of cinnamon sugar baked goods; and the falling snow—when they were lucky enough to get some.
For the first time, Roswell has even set up a Christmas Market like the ones you'd see in Europe. Alex's desert town has turned into a quaint storybook village.
Somebody has strung up multicolored lights between the small buildings, with brightly colored booths, side-by-side. There are reindeer attached to strings high up in the air, and a magnificent tall Christmas tree is sparkling within the town square. Above the tree is a halo of orange lights, symbolizing their golden desert sun.
It brightens both their spirits to witness the magic created. As Alex and Michael walk around, they hear the soft holiday music surrounding them, which only rekindles their melody passion.
They travel to each booth as they look for treasures to buy for their loved ones. Alex also keeps his eyes open for something unique he can get his Michael, but nothing quite captures his glance.
"Look at this!" Michael calls in the distance. He's standing in front of a lovely booth with peppermint designs on the awning and dangling glimmering white lights.
Alex sees what Michael is holding—it's a beautiful guitar ornament. Painted on the guitar are swirls of green, blue, and black, sparkled with stars symbolizing the night sky.
"Wow..." he says in response. "It's breathtaking."
Michael winks and bumps his shoulder lightly into Alex's, "Pretty cosmic, eh?"
"I'll say," Alex agrees as his grin widens.
"It was clearly made for us," Michael acknowledges as he wraps a strong arm around Alex's waist, "I think it would be the perfect ornament for our first tree together."
Alex kisses Michael softly on the lips, "I couldn't agree more, my love."
****
"So, you have no idea what you're getting him?"
Michael looks over at Isobel feeling exhausted, not at all how he felt when shopping with Alex, "Obviously not, that's why we're here, Iz."
"Michael, Christmas is less than one week away, and we're sitting in some random store, shopping for the love of your life, and you don't have a clue about a special gift for him?"
"Yup, that sounds about right."
Isobel shakes her lengthy blond hair back-and-forth. "Have I taught you nothing over the years?"
Michael groans, "Remind me again why I asked you to come with me?"
His alien sis just shrugs, "Because I'm brilliant, and it's obvious you need me. I would even add the word 'desperately.'"
"No...I don't recall that being the reason," Michael teases as he slings his arm lovingly over her shoulders. "You just love this stuff."
"You're right, I do. It's the best holiday these humans celebrate!" They both laugh, but Isobel kisses his cheek, "Listen, deep down somewhere underneath that dirty white tee of yours, you've gotta have an inkling of what you want to get him."
Well, if he had a clue, he would know it, wouldn't he?
But then Michael freezes as he sees something across the store, "Um, wow...that was fast, but you're right, I do."
Isobel pops a hip out, "Told you so."
"Yeah, the only problem is I'm not sure how he'll react to it."
Isobel smiles genuinely, "You know your man; you always have. Go with your instinct, Michael. I mean, word around this town is that they call you a genius or something." She gives him a look as she ruffles up his curls. "But pull away from that mind for once and go with that heart of yours. I, for one, know it's a pretty damn good one."
Michael snickers but truthfully feels loved, "You could write a self-help book, you know that?"
She winks and bites her red-stained lip, "Who says I haven't already?"
"Give your brother a signed copy. He'll appreciate it."
"As if," Isobel rolls her eyes, "You know Max wouldn't read it. That poor miserable fool who I love dearly." She pauses but adds, "So, Mr. Guerin, what'll it be? You going to listen to your heart?"
Michael narrows his eyes at the prize. Already knowing the answer to her question, he decides to let his heart follow the lead.
****
"A little to the left, babe!" Michael calls out to Alex as they attempt to fit the oversized tree through the cabin door. "Darlin',my left."
They spent the evening looking for the perfect tree, as it was their official first Christmas together. However, they ended up going with a taller sparse, and lopsided pine because, truthfully, life wasn't perfect, and neither were they.
Life is what you make it, and Michael is confident they can make this tree as bright as his heart feels when he's around Alex.
"There, perfect spot by the window," Alex smiles beautifully, pulling Michael back into the present moment as he nods in agreement.
"I should've tried harder not to get it through the door, though. Those muscles of yours are worth staring at a bit longer."
"Well, hold that thought, Guerin, because I'm hungry for food at the moment," Alex replies as he wraps his arms around Michael. "I'm thinking of soup; it's chilly tonight. Maybe it'll even snow."
Michael runs his fingers on Alex's thick biceps, feeling hungry for something else, "I doubt it. The forecast didn't show it. And knowing our little city, we'll probably end up having a heatwave tomorrow."
"Hey now," Alex remarks, looking deeply into Michael's eyes, "you never can know future outcomes."
Michael smiles mischievously, "I dunno...I think your future looks pretty damn bright tonight, babe."
"Is that a promise?" Alex asks, clearly flirting back.
"Always, darlin'.'"
They lean in to share a long lingering kiss, but before it turns too heated, Michael's belly moans in betrayal. Alex pulls back as he chuckles, "Raincheck for later, okay? I'm going to start dinner. Can you set up the tree so we can decorate afterward?"
Michael glares down at his stomach for the interruption but nods, "Absolutely." He moves his fingers, "I do know how to use these hands."
Alex grins in that sexy way of his as he walks into the kitchen, "Don't I know it."
Michael loves this. He loves that he decided to take the leap of faith and move in with Alex. This cabin has become their oasis, his true home. And here with Alex, he feels like he finally has a place here on earth.
Everything they had been through, even the pain, was worth it to get to this moment. Michael can't help but feel tears form in his eyes as he feels overwhelmed in gratitude.
While Alex moves around in the kitchen, Michael cheats a bit to get the tree set up. His powers hover the pine in the air as Michael uses his hands to set up the tree stand. As he moves the small box of ornaments and lights over from the closet, Michael smiles as he hears Alex humming a new song as he cooks.
Michael wants to live here in this domestic bliss forever.
Alex brings out his home-cooked meal, and damn, Michael thinks as he eats, his man knows how to cook. After they eat the delicious soup, Michael scrubs the plates as Alex makes them each a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows, just the way Michael likes it. When the kitchen is clean, they sip on the chocolatey warmth as they string lights and decorate their tree.
"Here's our new one," Alex says as he holds their new cosmic ornament in his hand.
"That's a special one that needs to go right in front," Michael replies, as he hangs it up, hand-in-hand with Alex. "There."
Alex leans over and kisses his cheek, which warms Michael's heart. "It's perfect."
"You're perfect," Michael states as he leans his head onto Alex's shoulder. Alex slides his arm around his waist. Their movements are continuously in sync, and they are always somehow touching.
As Alex's fingers softly graze over the skin on his hip, Michael knows what kind of touch he desires right this moment, "Now, how about we curl up by the fire, and I show you just how talented my hands can be?"
"Yes, I could use the reminder," Alex responds with a slow grin.
They quickly light the fire, then Alex gives Michael the look as he pulls him towards the couch.
Being so helplessly caught up in each other, they miss the first few snowflakes that fall in Roswell.
****
It's cold out, but worth the trip. Alex gives the nod towards Michael, who taps gently on Sanders' trailer door.
Michael shifts uncomfortably, but Alex is proud of him for facing the emotions he knows his love feels inside.
After Sanders admitted to trying to adopt Michael, it indeed did something to Michael's heart. He opened up more, and Alex knew that Michael slowly realized he was always wanted and truly loved where it counted. It did something to Sanders too. Alex could almost see the young boy Walt coming through when they spoke now. There was a twinkle in his eye, and he would share memories with a smile instead of sadness.
They felt like a family.
That's why they had talked before coming to the old man's house with the cookies. There is something big that Michael wants to do, but Alex knows he's scared.
Alex is by his side the entire time.
Sanders opens the door with a smile, "Oh, Michael! Alex! Welcome! I wasn't expecting you." He shakes his shirt with a look of embarrassment.
"We wanted to surprise you!" Alex says with a grin. He shakes the old man's hand.
Sanders pats the back of his hand lightly, "I'm glad you did. Please, come in, you two. It's actually cold out."
Michael takes a big breath and follows Sanders inside.
When inside, Michael hands him the cookies, "Merry early Christmas."
"Oh! These look delicious," Sanders says admiringly.
"I'm not sure if you remember, but these are the exact cookies we made that one Christmas together."
Sanders looks up at Michael with surprise, "Truly? The... 'burn on the arm' year?"
Michael nods with a jokingly wince, "The very one."
Sanders blows out hard, "Well, it always pained me that you got burned on that damn old oven of mine, but I must say, those cookies were superb, weren't they?"
"They were, burned and all."
"And you baked these all by yourself? Uh, should I be scared?" Sanders teases with a nudge.
"Nah, I had some guidance," Michael mentions as he casually puts his arm around Alex.
Alex shrugs, "I barely helped at all. Michael here did an excellent job. I tried one, so I can promise you that you'll survive." He winks at Michael.
"Oh, phew! That's a relief," Sanders chuckles. "Michael, where did you find the recipe?"
"In the garage, it was in a wooden box on one of your shelves. The one that's slightly tilting. I remembered you putting it in there." Michael taps his head, "I'm pretty observant if you haven't already noticed."
Sanders sighs with a lopsided grin, "You get it from me, I think." He pops one in his mouth. "Wow, absolutely delicious." After he chews, he looks towards Michael with an expression of gratitude. "Well, thank you, son, this means a lot to me."
Alex knows what the word son does to Michael, its effect on him, and Michael shifts awkwardly. He looks over to Alex for reassurance, and Alex holds his hand, comforting him the best way he knows how.
His strength, after all, is linked to Michael's. They go together in every way that matters.
"That's not the only thing I brought for you," Michael whispers. He reaches into his back pocket and hands Sanders the envelope.
"Oh, a Christmas card?"
"Um, well, not exactly," Michael replies as he squeezes Alex's hand tighter.
Sanders puts on his reading glasses and switches the lights on brighter in the trailer. He opens the envelope and starts to read. The small smile on his face begins to fall, and he becomes nonplussed.
Alex acknowledges that Michael gets uncomfortable, maybe even nervous, but Alex knows that Sanders is touched.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, Sanders looks up, and his eyes are full of tears. His voice comes out raspy and hoarse as he asks, "You sure? You want that?"
"More than anything," Michael responds, his voice also full of emotion. "If you'll have me, of course."
"It would be an honor, son." Sanders sets the adoption papers onto his small wooden table and pulls Michael tightly in his arms. "You've always felt like mine, anyway."
"I think my mom would be happy about this," Michael cries, letting the tears fall down his face. It's the most beautiful sight to witness, and Alex can't help but let go, too.
Sanders nods and closes his eye as he holds his son, "You know, my boy, I think she would."
****
A few days before Christmas, Alex and Michael decide to throw a little festive party at the cabin. They spent the morning stringing up lights outside, getting the drink station ready, and preparing their friend's gifts around the tree.
It was perfect.
Isobel is the first to arrive, of course, and she brings so many gifts, she can hardly get through the door, "Hello? A little help here, Michael?"
"I'm coming. I'm coming!"
Alex finishes up in the kitchen, and even though the feast smells delicious, Michael's man looks good enough to eat.
Soon after Isobel has her martini in hand, the others follow suit.
Liz and Kyle come together, hand-in-hand, and Michael prays it won't be awkward with Max. Gregory shows up, and Isobel immediately wraps her arms around him. Michael and Alex share a knowing smile, especially when she holds a mistletoe above his head. Then Maria and Mimi head inside with a few bottles of wine. With holes in the top, Rosa brings a large box inside, making Michael wonder what it is, but Arturo follows with a banana cream pie from the diner, and the rest is history. Sanders joins, of course, and Michael can't help but hug him longer than the rest. And finally, his boy Max.
Luckily everyone gets along perfectly. The group has been through so much together that they make a toast for a fresh new beginning.
Everyone at the party finally knows about the aliens being, well, aliens, and swore to protect them. The secret has bonded and united them in ways Michael never expected.
The group mingles as they sip their drinks, and Michael looks around the room at his friends and family, feeling lucky. He made a life for himself in Roswell, and as he looks towards the love of his existence, Michael knows it's time.
He takes a moment to just stare at Alex, and suddenly he's beyond grateful he listened to his heart.
Alex is the one for him. Michael now understands that this human was his reason for coming to this planet—they were written in the stars long ago, destined to be together.
This is why Michael stands up bravely, walks towards Alex, and gets down on one knee.
Michael opens the little black box he got in the store with Isobel and reveals a silvery gray tantalum band, one he knows will fit Alex perfectly.
Isobel hushes everyone down and clasps her hands together as she sends Michael a wink from across the room. Max also gives Michael an encouraging nod, which provides him with the strength he needs at that moment.
Michael stares up at the man he adores, and Alex's perfect mouth falls open. Taking his love's hand, Michael finally finds his voice, "Alex Manes, you are my whole world. When we were teens, you looked at me in music class and sparked something deep inside me; something I didn't quite understand, but it was there with me all along. And when we kissed for the first time, you woke me up to the life I had always dreamed of having. You are that dream, Alex. You are my family, and you've given me a place to call home. I have loved you from the beginning, and I'll love you to the very end." Michael takes a deep breath, "I would be the happiest alien on earth if you would yes. So please, darlin', will you marry me?"
Alex gleams as tears fill those beautiful eyes, "We truly are linked...."
"What...what do you mean?" Michael whispers, but Alex immediately joins him on the floor, kneeling in front of him.
Alex pulls out an emerald velvet box and opens it. Inside is an engraved bronze band that matches the color of Michael's eyes. He holds his breath as the rest of the world fades away. "I mean, you beat me to it even though I've had this ring since we officially got together." Alex places his hand to Michael's face and strokes his cheek gently. "I was waiting for our first Christmas together because I wanted to give us both a happy memory to erase all the bad ones. The plan was going to ask Walt for his approval, which he wholeheartedly gave." They both look at Sanders, who nods with a loving grin. "And then I'd get down on one knee in front of all our loved ones and ask if you'd continue to create this life together with me, a true home." Then Alex holds Michael's hand again, "All I can say is that I love you more than I could ever begin to put into words, and I'm asking you if you'd do me the honor in marrying me?"
Michael doesn't realize he's crying until he feels the drops land on his outstretched hand. "Oh my God, Alex...."
"Is that a yes?"
Michael laughs softly as he strokes the back of Alex's hand gently, "I believe I asked you first, darlin'."
Alex nods with a breathtaking smile, tears flickering those beautiful dark eyes, "Of course I will. A hundred times, yes!" He leans in closer to Michael, "And you?"
"That would be a hell yes, baby!" He hears a whoop from one of his friends in the background, but then Michael gets serious. "It's always been a yes for me." Michael cups Alex's face, "You're my human, Alex Manes."
"That's Alex Sanders if you don't mind."
Michael looks over at his adoptive father again, who's now wiping his eyes and positively glowing. Michael kisses Alex's lips, "I don't mind a bit."
As they finish their first engaged kiss, their friends cheer, cry, and hug them both tightly, then Isobel giggles, "Is now a good time to give you two our gift?"
"Go for it, Scooby Squad," Michael exclaims as he takes Alex's hand in his own, never wanting to let go.
Isobel looks to the room they had closed, "Okay, Rosa, bring her out!"
Michael and Alex exchange a look. Bring who out?
And before Michael can overthink it, Rosa comes out holding a beagle puppy. "It's a rescue. The shelter I volunteer at found her abandoned on the side of the road."
"We thought it would be perfect for you two, plus, remember that dinner we had a couple of weeks ago?" Isobel says as she looks towards Alex. "You practically said you were going to start looking for one. I remember you saying, 'the cabin is much too quiet, I think we need to get a dog.'"
Alex laughs and takes the small puppy into his arms, "I don't recall those were my exact words, but it doesn't matter; she's perfect."
"Lost without a family," Michael says, petting the puppy's long ears, "sounds like the two of us all right."
"You mean a found family!" Liz calls out. "Just like all of us."
Alex looks at Michael and nods. Michael smiles back, "We love her. Thank you, everyone!"
"I knew this pup would be a part of your future," Mimi exclaims, and Michael watches Alex wink at her. "She's a gentle soul. I'm happy she'll have you two."
"Best dog daddies ever," Maria smiles happily. Everyone in the room has what seems to be permanent heart-eyes. "We will miss her, though! She's been staying with us."
"Well, you know you all are welcome here anytime!" Alex says.
"What will you name her?" Gregory asks as Isobel leans back into his arms.
"How about Kyletta?" Michael laughs as he looks towards Kyle. "Kyletta Barklenti."
"Real funny, alien boy," Kyle responds, as he rolls his eyes looking reasonably amused. He looks over at the food, "How about Bagel? You seemed to be pretty obsessed with those today, Guerin. I mean, how many did you actually eat?"
"I was hungry!" Michael retorts, "You didn't bring nearly enough to share."
"Okay, okay," Alex intervenes as he shakes his head. Michael enjoys ruffling Kyle's feathers, but Michael doesn't mind the guy beneath his human annoyances. He's a good friend to Alex, making him a good man in Michael's book.
"So, what are you going to name her then?" Max asks from across the room.
"Yeah, I mean, you don't actually have to name her after a food," Kyle teases.
"No," Michael grins, "you know what, Doc? I like it. Bagel. It has that—"
"Bagel! Yes, call her Bagel. I love it!" Isobel interrupts.
"Not again..." Michael groans quietly. Isobel + anything bagel = interruptions, which is a no-go, especially when it comes to Alex.
After they finalize the name, everyone gushes over the puppy and their rings. They eat, share stories, and finish opening gifts.
The day is perfect in every way. Even on the Hallmark channel, they don't make them better than this.
Michael holds Bagel in his arm and takes a break from the crowd. He sits on the couch in the living room, and the puppy folds up into his lap, falling asleep as Michael rubs her ears.
After a moment or two, someone strokes his shoulder lightly, and he looks up to see his fiancé's beautiful face. Michael feels immensely grateful, not for the first time this holiday season.
Alex scoots in close and whispers in Michael's ear, "So, my love, would you say this Christmas is worth remembering?"
Michael pulls Alex in his arms, "Yes, darlin'. I've never been happier in my life." He takes Alex's hand with the ring and kisses it. "Our family is already growing."
"It sure is," Alex says, putting his forehead against Michael's as he strokes Bagel's soft fur.
They sit there for a while, just the three of them, with the comforting hum of loved ones surrounding them.
"Wow...Look, Michael." Michael looks out the window to see it snowing. The snowflakes fall to the ground in a swirling dance. It reminds Michael of their life together, new and old memories, coming together in a story of love.
Michael feels complete peace in his heart as Alex says, "Merry Christmas, my love."
It was merry, and their future, well, Michael knows it will be very bright as long as they always have each other.
"I love you," Michael answers.
Alex's reply is the kiss they share and would continue sharing for the rest of their days.

I’ve got a busy day today, so I thought I’d get this out early - enjoy! This is Chapter 4 of my Malex Santa fic for @prouvaireafterdark , and it takes place at the Pony’s Christmas party.
Sneak peek:
“That’s him,” Alex whispers, then takes a long pull of his beer.
Michael narrows his eyes. “In the corner?”
Alex nods.
“Blonde?”
“No.”
“Wait, so the blue-haired guy?”
“That’s him,” Alex says, resigned. He turns to look. “He moved on fast,” he mutters.
“So did you,” Michael says, gesturing to himself.
Alex looks away. “Yeah, but...” he shakes his head. “This isn’t real.”

Michael's eyes widened when he noticed Alex's sweater. "Oh my god, this is my early Christmas present tonight. My model husband, wearing an "ugly" Christmas sweater. Ellie, have you seen this? Have you seen how handsome Alex looks in his sweater? I mean, he'd give Colin Firth a run for his money any day, but wow, this sweater. I'm in awe."
---
My @malexsanta gift for @usbournejez - 7.5k of fluff with a smidge of angst.
Your prompt "On Christmas Eve, Michael and Alex have to look after Greg's little baby together. Their true nature as parents are revealed. Also, you know, Alex holding a baby under Christmas tree lighting. How could Michael resist that?" spoke to me immediately, and I hope I managed to write something you’ll enjoy. MERRY CHRISTMAS! ❤️
~*~
"What are you wearing?" Isobel asked, looking at Alex in mild disbelief. Her usually well-dressed brother-in-law was wearing what looked a lot like a replica of Colin Firth's reindeer Christmas sweater from the first Bridget Jones movie.
"Michael's idea," Alex said, his dreamy smile betraying his annoyed tone.
Isobel chuckled. "Oh honey, you have it bad for my brother, so bad even, that you, Mr. GQ himself, put on an," she air quoted the next word "ugly Christmas sweater to make him happy."
Alex laughed. " Don't tell anyone, but I ordered Christmas themed onesies for us to wear in front of the open fire. There are candy canes and red-nosed reindeers printed all over it. He'll love it!"
"Alex, you're the gift Michael's been waiting for his whole life, even during the 50 years we were floating in our pods," Isobel said fondly.
Alex laughed, delighted, and then looked over Isobel's shoulder.
"Didn't you bring your husband? And where's the main attraction?"
"Greg's just getting all her things from the car. She fell asleep on the drive here and we thought we'd wait until the last moment to wake her up. You know how she is when someone interrupts one of her naps," Isobel explained.
"Like mother, like daughter," Alex chuckled.
Isobel flicked his ear, which caused Alex to let out a painful yelp. Then she poked her perfectly manicured finger into his stomach – right into Rudolph's red nose.
"You are still holding that against me? I was 9 months pregnant when that happened. You try that some day, Captain, and I'll come over and wake you up from a restful nap you were only able to take because your kid didn't do cartwheels inside of you for a change. You'd be grumpy, too."
"You know, if I could, I would absolutely try that," Alex said wistfully.
Isobel looked at him, an eyebrow raised in question.
"The pregnancy thing," Alex explained. "If I could, I'd do it. You know how much Michael's yearning to become a dad, but that's something I'll ever be able to give him. I sometimes wonder whether he ever regretted that he didn't fall in forever love with a woman."
Alex's train of thought was interrupted, when Isobel wrapped her arms around him and pulled him into a tight hug.
"You know," she began, but interrupted herself to kiss his cheek. Then she pulled back to look him in the eyes. "There are many other ways for you two to become parents, Alex. Michael loves, you. He loves you so much, no amount of yearning for a kid will ever make him regret that the love of his life is someone who isn't equipped with a womb." She squeezed him tightly. "Come on, let's go outside and help Greg."
Alex smiled into her shoulder and breathed in deeply. She smelled expensive today, but the scent of rain underneath was unmistakable. It was so familiar and soothing, the cloud of self-doubt over his head evaporated. He squeezed her one last time before he let go of her.
"Can I try my luck and get her?"
Isobel smiled at him, her eyes shining with fondness. "You do that. She loves her Uncle Alex the most, maybe she won't be too cross when it's you who wakes her up."
Alex followed Isobel outside to the back of the car parked in the driveway. Gregory was folded in half and dived for one last thing stuck in the in the far right corner of the trunk.
"Gotcha," he exclaimed in a hushed voice, carefully retreating back out of the trunk until he was able to stand up to his full height without being danger of hitting his head.
"Hi, baby brother, it's good to see you." He smiled warmly at Alex, and Alex felt a pang of love burst in his chest. He was on good terms with all three of his brothers these days, even with Flint, but Greg held a special place in his heart.
"Hello, you big lump. Good to see you, too," he joked and stepped closer to wrap Greg into a tight hug.
"Nice sweater," his brother murmured, "Michael will love it."
Alex pulled back and chuckled. "You know him too well. I just told Isobel that I ordered Christmas onesies we'll wear tonight. It's just wonderful to see him being a kid at Christmas, making up for all the years during his childhood he couldn't. Enough of that, though. Why don't you guys grab all the stuff and go inside while I'll try my best to kiss the princess awake?"
Isobel hauled a large bag over her shoulder, picked up two paper bags, and headed towards the house. Gregory clicked a button on the car key, and the trunk door slowly closed. Then he picked up the baby swing and another bag and nodded at Alex. "She's all yours. Good luck with our little Miss Grumpypants." He winked at Alex, then he turned around and followed Isobel.
Alex took a deep breath and steeled himself for the task ahead. He loved Eloise like he was his own, and she loved him. At least he hoped she would one day. She was only seven months old and couldn't do much more than coo and babble, but going by how huge she smiled whenever Alex picked her up, he liked to think that she knew who he was, and that she loved him.
He walked around the car and carefully opened the back door. She was fast asleep in her car seat, the ear of her favorite toy bunny (a gift from Alex) clutched into her tiny fist. Alex's heart clenched at the sight of her. She was so small and adorable. He couldn't wait to spend the day with her.
Carefully, he unbuckled the seat belt and tried to wrangle her arms out of the safety harness without jostling her too much. Her tiny mouth pursed in discontent, and she blinked one eye open.
"Hello sweetheart, there you are," he whispered and bent forward to press a soft kiss to her forehead. She mewled unhappily but grabbed for him until she had a fist full of Rudolf's face in her hand. He lifted her out of the car seat and scooped her up in his arms.
"That's my girl. I know you're still sleepy but it's cold out here and we should go inside. You can take another nap later, I promise."
She whimpered and buried her face in the crook of his neck, holding onto him and her bunny. He patted her back and closed the car door before he carried her back inside the house.
Alex stopped at the open door of the guest room, where Gregory and Isobel had already placed the bag with the baby's change of clothes. After Liz and Max's twin were born, Michael had set up a beautiful baby bed he'd built himself. "I want our nephews and nieces to have a bed here to take naps or spend the night when they come over, Alex, and maybe, one day, we'll even have a baby of our own."
Alex had struggled to hold back tears when Michael had said it. He always did when Michael mentioned things like having a baby or being a dad. He knew that Michael loved him, and that they'd probably adopt a child one day (he had several websites of adoption agencies bookmarked), but he couldn't quite shake the feeling of wondering whether Michael ever felt regret that they couldn't have biological children, like his alien siblings.
"Oh, there you are. Is she awake?" Isobel's voice nudged him out of his thoughts.
"I wouldn't quite say she's awake yet, but she's not asleep anymore either," Alex replied as he made his way into the living room. He smiled down on Ellie's head and pressed a kiss into her golden hair.
He took the bunny and dropped it on the nearby couch. Ellie snuffled and let out another sleepy unhappy mewl. Isobel came closer and smiled at her daughter.
"Could you turn her around so I can take off her jacket? Your house is so cozy and warm, I think I'll even take off the cardigan. You can put it back on when you think she's getting cold."
Alex turned Ellie around in his arms to give Isobel access to the. Ellie pouted at being wrenched from the comfort of Alex's embrace, but when she saw her mom, the pout quickly turned into a toothless grin.
"Hi baby girl, there you are. Did you have a good nap?" Ellie kicked her legs into the air in reply. "Oh yes, you are waking up. I can see that. Let me take off your jacket, sweetheart," Isobel cooed, opened the zipper of the jacket, and placed a flurry of quick kisses across her daughter's face.
Ellie giggled and threw her arms up in the air as far as she could. Isobel was quick to pull the sleeves off of Ellie's arms while she was still holding them up.
"This trick works like a charm every time," she told Alex in a conspiratorial tone. He filed the information away for later use. "Good to know," he grinned. "Can I try it with the cardigan?"
Isobel nodded, and scooped Ellie up in her arms. Alex stepped closer and opened the buttons of Ellie's green cardigan.
"Oh, is that cashmere?" he wondered.
Isobel rolled her eyes. "Yes, gift from my mom. I know she means well, but a cashmere cardigan for a baby isn't the most useful gift if I'm being honest. I would never tell her that, though. She loves being a grandma and that's what matters."
"True, I don't think I've ever seen your mom as relaxed and happy as she seems to be when she's spending time with your and Max's kids."
"I'll admit that I didn't expect Mrs. "what will my friends at the Country Club say about this" Evans would be such a devoted grandmother, not afraid to get her clothes dirty when she's taking the twins to the playground, nor ever complaining when Ellie spits on her. I'm so happy that Max and I are able to give her the baby experience, since she never had that with us."
Alex 's thoughts drifted off to Jesse. It had been five years since his father's death, and most days he was just grateful that he'd never have to be afraid of the man again. There were still moments when he missed him, though. Not for what or how Jesse was, but for what he maybe could've been under different circumstances. Would he have softened with grandchildren around?
Alex closed his eyes for a moment and shook his head. No, he wouldn't have. His father had been a hard man, and a soldier through and through. He would've despised Ellie and the twins for being part alien, probably wouldn't even have hesitated to lock them up somewhere, together with their parents. Alex shuddered at the thought.
He forced his eyes open again and looked at Isobel and Ellie. Isobel looked at him, worry creasing her brow.
"Sorry, just thought about my dad for a second. It happens sometimes," he said apologetically.
She nodded. "I know. Greg does, too."
She shifted Ellie on one hip and lifted one hand to cup Alex's face.
"It's okay, Alex. Losing a parent is hard. No matter what kind of parent. Grief doesn't follow logic, it follows emotions. And emotions are complicated. Messy." She stroked his cheek with the soft pad of one finger. "Come on, let this little nugget take your thoughts off of unpleasant memories. See if you get her to lift her arms so you can take the cardigan off."
Alex pressed a quick kiss to Isobel's open palm before he focused on Ellie again.
Isobel shifted her in her arms and he started peppering Ellie's face with little kisses. She squealed happily and raised her arms in excitement. Alex was quick to make use of the opportunity, and not half a minute later he held the cardigan in his hands.
"Ha, neat trick. I'll try and see if it works with Michael, too."
Isobel's face twisted in disgust. "Ew, I really didn't need that mental image of your and my brother's bedroom antics."
"Are you telling me you haven't tried it with Greg yet?"
She blushed. "That's between me and my husband. A propos, husband." She turned around to look for him. "Greg? Did you fall asleep in there?"
Gregory entered the living room, his phone in hand.
"No, just checked the weather report. We should get on the road if we want to make it there before the snow."
Isobel nodded. "Okay, time to say goodbye, sweetheart. Mom and dad won't be gone long. We'll be back tomorrow morning, just in time for opening the presents, and breakfast."
She turned to Alex. "You are making breakfast, aren't you? I'm dying to eat your pancakes and drink coffee from that fancy machine of yours. Husband, dearest, why don't we have a fancy coffee maker?"
"Because I believe in the magic of ChemEx, not coffee machines, honey. And now come, just a quick goodbye and then we really have to go." He bent down and took Ellie from Isobel's arms.
She laughed happily when he wrapped her in a comforting hug and kissed her chubby little cheeks. "Be a good girl, Ellie. We'll be back tomorrow morning."
Isobel hugged Alex, also kissing him on the cheek.
"When does Michael come home? Did he or Max say what they are up to?"
Alex shook his head, then he held his arms out in front of him and Greg placed Ellie in his arms.
"He didn't say, just that they were going to check something they discovered on a map? He didn't elaborate, but he said he'd be back home in time for dinner at breakfast this morning."
"Okay, I hope they'll be okay out there in this weather."
Alex's heart clenched painfully at the idea of something happening to Michael, but then he forced himself to relax. "They took Max's Jeep, not the truck. I'm sure they'll be fine. Michael wouldn't do anything reckless." He frowned. "Well, not on Christmas Eve at least. I'll text him later and ask how they're doing. Maybe they're on their way back already."
Isobel nodded and squeezed Alex's arm.
"If you hear from them, text me? I'll put my phone on silent, but I'll sneak a glance at it every now and then. There will be plenty of boring speeches tonight. But it's all for a good cause, and as the event planner, it's my duty to attend."
She kissed the top of Ellie's head.
"Be good, Ellie. I miss you already and can't wait to cuddle with you tomorrow morning. I love you." She placed another kiss on Alex's cheek. "And I love you, too. Thank you so much for taking care of her. We'd be lost without you."
Alex laughed. "Nonsense, you know how much I love having her here. We're going to have a lot of fun. I have everything we need like diapers, formula, toys. I have yours, Greg's and Dr. Lieberman's phone numbers on speed dial, Kyle lives just 2 miles away, I'm experienced in first aid, and Michael's an alien with healing powers."
Isobel looked at him with wide eyes.
"Good god, Alex, I know she's in the very best hands with you. Relax. We trust you. Indefinitely. You are an amazing uncle, and apart from Michael, Liz and Max, there's no one else in the world I'd trust my kid with as much, as I trust you. And now we're leaving to avoid the snow. See you tomorrow morning, and please, text me when you hear from my idiot brothers!"
She took Gregory's hand and pulled him with her. Greg looked over his shoulder at Alex. "She's right, there's no one else I'd trust my daughter with more than you. Love you, Alex, see you tomorrow," he said on his way out.
And then they were gone, and Alex was alone with Ellie. He closed his eyes and focused on calming his breathing. Focused on the warm weight of the baby in his arms. He caught a whiff of her scent he hadn't noticed before. Baby powder and rain, unmistakably. He buried his nose in Ellie's hair and took a deep breath.
The smell of rain calmed his frayed nerves. He had no idea why he was so on edge. He shook his head and opened his eyes again. He looked around his and Michael's living room and took in every detail.
The large open fireplace in the corner, the comfy looking L-shaped couch by the large, floor-deep windows, the many pictures of Michael and himself, and of their friends and families. The tall Christmas tree next to the fireplace, decorated with wooden ornaments and red accessories, strings of tiny yellow glowing lights woven into the tree.
Michael had helped him put up the baby playpen next to the couch before he'd left for his adventure with Max earlier. Another beautiful piece of furniture Michael had designed and assembled in his workshop.
The playpen was elevated so that Alex could sit next to it on the couch or on a chair and didn't have to drop down to the floor. The playpen was softly padded with colorful cushions Rosa had made for them, and a few soft toys were stored in a wooden box attached at the side. A mobile with little wooden aliens, stars, and UFOs hang from a hook above the playpen.
Ellie gurgled and wriggled around in his arms. He turned her around and looked at her with a soft smile.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart, your Uncle Alex has been very absent-minded today. I'm so happy you're here, though. Let's put a fresh diaper on you, and then we can play, what do you say?"
Ellie cooed and reached for his face with her little hands. He laughed and kissed the tips of her fingers, which got her even more excited. Eloise Manes loved kisses. Just like her Uncle Alex.
Alex carried her over into the guest room where a changing table with all essentials was set up. He turned on the small space heater, put her down on the table, and changed her diapers. Before he put her onesie back on, he blew a few raspberries on her naked belly. She laughed and kicked her legs in delight. Alex was in a great mood when they returned to the living room. He put Ellie in the playpen, and they spent the afternoon playing with the mobile, a soft ball, and of course, Ellie's bunny.
After a while she got restless, though. She didn't like lying on her back or belly for too long. Alex stood up, picked her up, and started walking around the living room with her. She gurgled and "talked" to him excitedly, reaching for anything that grabbed her attention, the Christmas tree in particular.
"No, Ellie, I'm so sorry, but I can't let you play with the tree or the ornaments. But you know what, why don't we call your Uncle Michael and see what he's up to. It's getting dark outside and I want to ask him when he's coming home."
Alex put Ellie on the hip of his good leg and pulled his phone from the back pocket of his jeans. He walked closer to the window and held up the phone in front of himself and Ellie. "Hey Siri, facetime Michael," Alex told the phone and kissed Ellie's had absentmindedly.
Michael answered on the third ring and his scruffy face suddenly filled the screen. He smiled.
"Oh, Ellie's already there. I'm so sorry, Alex, we got held up but we're on our way back now," Michael said before Alex could even say hello.
Ellie tried to reach for the phone and Alex struggled to keep it out of her reach without dropping her. He laughed.
"He's on his way home, Ellie, he'll be here soon and then you can give him a kiss." He put the phone down and hoisted her back up on his hip. He should've sat down on the couch instead of carrying her around while he talked to Michael. Oh well. He grabbed his phone and walked over to the couch.
He sat down; Ellie nestled comfortably in the crook of his elbow. "Are you still there?" he asked.
Michael waved at him. "Of course, darlin'. Still here. On my way home to you. Can't wait to kiss you and my adorable niece!"
Michael smiled warmly at them, and Alex felt like he was in danger of bursting with love for the man. His man. His husband.
Not in his wildest dreams would he ever have imagined that one day, he'd sit here in a house he'd built together with the love of his life he'd been lucky enough to marry two years ago.
"Hey, earth to Alex, are you still there?"
Alex laughed. "Ugh, sorry, this has been an ongoing thing today. So weird. I seem to get lost in thought every now and then. Sorry, what did you say when you'd be home?"
"I didn't say yet, but I think it can't be more than half an hour," Michael replied.
"That's good. Ellie's been looking forward to seeing you all afternoon." Ellie's head perked up at the mention of her name.
"I can hardly believe that. You'd think her alien uncle is her favorite, since she's, y'know, half alien herself. But nope. It's you. She has impeccable taste, I'll admit. You're my favorite, too."
Alex blushed, he honest to god blushed at a sappy wonderful thing his husband said to him. It was good that both his hands were occupied with holding a baby and a phone, it kept him from burying his head in his hands.
"Alright," he said. "About half an hour, good, that's when it's almost time for her dinner. When she's in bed, I want to snuggle up with you on our couch and enjoy an evening in front of the fire."
Michael nodded. "I'm in! Can't wait to tell you about our little adventure."
There was something in the way Michael looked at him through the phone that made Alex wonder, but then Michael turned the phone around and Max in the driver's seat became visible.
"Say hello to your favorite brother-in-law, Max," Alex could hear Michael say.
Max glanced over to Michael's phone and smiled.
"Hi, favorite brother-in-law. How are you and my favorite niece holding up?"
Alex laughed. "So many favorites, but guess what, you're my favorite brother-in-law, too."
Max snorted. "I'm your only brother-in-law, you're cheating."
Alex shrugged. "What, and just because you're the only one, you can't be my favorite? Drive safe, you two. And when you get home, tell Liz and the twins hi. See you tomorrow!"
"I'll tell her. Hope you and Michael will have a wonderful evening tonight. See you tomorrow."
Michael turned the phone back around to himself.
"I can't wait to see you, Alex. I love you. See you in half an hour," Michael said, pursing his lips to make a kissing face.
"I love you, too. I'm waiting for you. We're waiting for you," Alex said in a hushed voice. He dipped the phone a little to show Ellie to Michael. She was blinking tiredly and had jammed her thumb and part of her rabbit's ear into her mouth.
Michael's face softened at the sight of the little girl.
"She's adorable. See you in a bit Alex."
With that the phone screen went black. Alex sent a short text to Isobel and put his phone away. Then he reached for the beautiful blanket (matching the colors of the playpen cushions) Rosa had made for them and pulled it over himself and Ellie. He'd just rest for a bit until Michael came home.
~*~
"What do you think he'll say?" Michael asked when Max stopped the car.
Max turned his head and smiled. "What do you think he'll say? You know him better than I do, and I know what he'll say. Go inside, Michael. Take care of Ellie, then tell him."
Michael reached over and squeezed Max's hand.
"Thanks, Max. You're right. And thanks for coming with me today. Give Liz my best and have a good evening. See you tomorrow at eleven. You're bringing Arturo, right?"
Max shook his head. "No, he's coming with Rosa. Even though we told him several times that he didn't have to prepare food for the breakfast, he insisted on making "a little something". Expect Rosa's tiny car being loaded to the brim with containers with enough food to feed an entire army. He's just so happy to spend Christmas with family, we didn't have the heart to tell him no."
"You won't ever hear me complain about Arturo bringing food. I hate that he's putting in so much work to feed us all, but I also understand that it's important to him. Alex is still making pancakes, though. He even ordered more of the syrup you liked so much the last time," Michael teased.
Max grinned. "He's my favorite brother-in-law for a reason. And now go inside, Michael. I'm very happy for you. See you tomorrow."
Michael nodded and took a deep breath before he opened the car door and got out of the car. He turned around and looked at Max.
"Drive safe. Good night, Max."
"Good night, Michael."
Michael closed the door and Max drove off.
Michael patted his jacket down in search for his keys. He knew he was stalling. He didn't need keys to open the door. He just needed this one additional minute to compose himself before he faced Alex.
Once inside, he shrugged off his coat, toed off his boots, and hung up his hat on the hook by the door. The house was quiet, but he saw light coming from the living room.
On socks, he walked down the hallway and quickly washed his hands in the kitchen. He dried off his hands and went back into the hallway. The door to the living room was ajar. He pushed it open and looked around the corner in search for Alex.
When he spotted him and Ellie asleep on the couch, his heart soared. He entered the room, stepped closer, and looked his fill. Alex looked beautiful in the dim light of the room. His dark hair slightly tousled, his cheeks flushed from the warmth, and the sleepy baby draped across his chest. Michael pulled out his phone and took a photo.
Then he kneeled down next to the couch and softly stroked Alex's cheek. Alex stirred.
"You're back. I've missed you," he mumbled.
"I've missed you, too." He smiled. "Are you good on the couch with her, or would you like me to take over?"
Alex blinked his eyes open and assessed the situation.
"If I'm being honest, I wouldn't mind a bathroom break. Maybe you could take over. On my way back I'll make a bottle for her dinner. I don't think she'll make much of a fuss afterwards and should go to sleep fairly quickly. I defrosted a quiche this morning, I could put that one in the oven and when she's asleep, we'll have that and some wine in front of the fire."
"If I hadn't already married you, I'd ask for your hand in marriage again this very moment. I'm starving, and quiche sounds amazing," Michael exclaimed. He pushed himself up into a standing position, bent down, and gave Alex a lingering kiss.
"Hi, darlin', I love you."
Alex smiled warmly. "I love you, too." He shifted on the couch. "Do you want me to hand her to you, or will you float her over?"
"You can hand her to me, she has to wake up for dinner anyway," Michael said, reaching for Ellie.
Alex lifted her off of his chest and gave her to Michael. She blinked her eyes open and when she saw who it was who took her, she made cooing noises.
"Hello Ellie, my love. Yes, hello. I've missed you, too." He held the baby stable with his telekinesis, while he offered Alex his hand to help him up from the couch. Alex winced when he stood up and carefully stretched his stiff muscles.
Alex laughed. "You are silly, and I love you, I really have to go." He kissed Michael on the cheek. "I'll be quick."
Michael nodded and then turned his attention back to Ellie. She looked at him with big, brown eyes, then she smiled. Michael smiled back. "It's so good to see you, sweetheart. You have to tell me about what you and Alex were up to this afternoon."
Ellie made a gurgling sound. "No way," Michael exclaimed. "You read a book together? And played with your bunny? Sounds like you had a very busy day."
Michael continued to hold a rather one-sided conversation with the baby while Alex went to the bathroom.
When he returned to the living room with the warm bottle in one, and a large cotton flannel in his other hand, Michael was slowly dancing through the room, Ellie in his arms, and he sang "Jingle Bells" for her. She loved it and couldn't stop smiling and cooing.
Michael noticed Alex standing in the door and waved him over. As much as he'd loved to continue dancing with her, the bottle would get cold very fast, and if there was one thing Ellie despised, it was lukewarm formula.
"Dinner's served, Miss Ellie," he told the baby. "Where would milady prefer to dine tonight?"
~*~
Once Ellie was fed and asleep in her bed in the guest room, Alex and Michael returned to the living room. Alex opened the baby monitor app on his phone and set it up, then he put his phone down on the table in front of the couch.
When he turned around, Michael was standing in front of the wall where most of their photos were on display. He was looking at one of the framed photos, a picture of Michael, Isobel, and Max, shortly after they'd been found alone in the desert after hatching from their pods.
Alex walked over to Michael and hooked his chin over Michael's shoulder. "What are you looking at?" he asked.
"Oh, it's just this old picture of the three of us. Look how small we were."
Alex smiled. "Yeah, you were around 7 years old, I think. Or at least that's the age they assumed, right?" Michael nodded.
"Yes, 7 years old, and they made the day we were found our birthday on all the legal papers when it became clear that no one would come and claim us. Officially, I turned 7 on the day we hatched."
Alex kissed the shell of Michael's ear. "I'm so sorry that you have no way of finding out when your actual birthday is."
Michael turned around and looked at Alex. "Well, turns out I do, actually. That's why Max and I went on our little adventure today."
Alex's eyes widened. "You found out when you were actually born somewhere in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico? On Christmas Eve? How, Michael?"
Michael took a deep breath. "Not quite, but I think we found something that will give us some much-needed answers. I didn't tell you about this "mission" because I didn't want to stress you. It has to do with—" Michael took another deep breath. "It has to do with Mr. Jones."
Alex's breath hitched. "Michael, that was four years ago. And Jones is dead. Did you resurrect him? Is he in a pod?" Alex's heart beat faster, and he struggled to keep calm. He'd been the one who'd been taken by Mr. Jones. Jones had tortured him and left him for dead.
Michael had found him just in time to save him (with a handprint no less) from certain death. Then he'd organized a hunt for Jones that had ultimately ended with Jones being captured. The man had killed himself swallowing a pill filled with poison.
Kyle, Liz, and Michael had examined the body afterwards to make sure that Jones was really dead. They had buried him. How was it possible that whatever Michael'd been up to today, had to do with Jones?
"Is—Is Jones back?" His voice sounded small to his own ears.
Michael pulled him into a tight hug. "No, oh my god, no. I'm so sorry, Alex, I didn't mean to scare you. I did this all wrong. But please, don't worry. He's not back. What happened today has to do with him, in a way, but I swear, it's good news. Not a single thing to worry about."
Michael rubbed soothing circles into Alex's back, and slowly, Alex managed to relax.
Michael kept stroking his back for a while before he spoke again. "You mentioned earlier that you made quiche. And you mentioned wine. What do you think about getting comfortable, having dinner, and then I'll tell you what happened today?"
Alex nodded. "That sounds good. You should come with me to the bedroom, I have a surprise for you there," Alex mumbled into Michael's shoulder, still clinging to the comforting heat he radiated.
"My, my, our bedroom," Michael said suggestively, wiggling his eyebrows.
Alex chuckled. "Not what you think. Come, let me show you, I've been looking forward to giving you this all day."
He took Michael's hand and lead him to their bedroom. He let Michael enter first and switched on the lights. When Michael saw the Christmas onesies on the bed, he laughed. Then he pulled Alex into his arms again.
"You bought us Christmas onesies? You are incredible and I love you so, so much. I'll just take a quick shower. Would you put the quiche in the oven while I'm in the bathroom? Then we can eat and have a glass of wine by the fire."
Alex nodded. "Alright. Meet you on the couch in 20."
They kissed and parted ways, Michael heading to the bathroom, and Alex to the kitchen.
Twenty minutes later, they sat down on the couch, both wearing the Christmas onesies Alex had ordered for them. The quiche was in the oven and two glasses of red wine were placed on the table in front of them.
Alex had taken off his prosthetic for the day and put on a thermal sock on his left foot. The first sip of wine warmed him from the inside, and he felt finally ready to listen to Michael's story.
Michael ran a hand through his still damp hair. "So, long story short. It all started with Max having some weird dreams about a week ago. Liz and I ran some tests but couldn't find anything unusual. Three nights in a row, he had dreams of a very prominent rock formation. He made a drawing, and after some extensive research, I found it. Like you said, it's in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico. Max couldn't stop thinking about it. We just wanted to take a look at it, see whether we could find anything. Just to make sure that there was no immediate threat." Michael took a deep breath, then nipped from his wine.
"When we arrived near the rock formation," he continued, "we both felt this weird pull. We immediately knew that it was alien related, and after searching the area, we found the entry to a cave."
"You found an alien related cave in the middle of nowhere and investigated without any back-up? Michael, I feel like I'm getting a heart attack just hearing about this, even though you're sitting right in front of me."
Michael pulled Alex into his arms and kissed the top of his head. "I'm so sorry for worrying you, even though there's nothing to worry about. I swear."
Alex sat up again and looked at Michael. "You went into the cave, didn't you?"
Michael had the decency to blush.
Alex clenched his fists. "Michael, how could you?"
Michael looked at Alex, his eyes begging for forgiveness. "I'm sorry, Alex. We just had to make sure that no one was in trouble."
Alex sighed. "Okay, you went inside. What did you find?"
Michael's face lit up at the memory, and yet his eyes teared up a bit. "Alex, we found another pod."
Alex gasped. "Another pod? Michael, what on earth. I mean, not from this earth, obviously. Was there someone inside? Did you free them? Michael?"
A single tear ran down Michael's face: "There's a baby inside the pod Alex. And going by what Max and I were able to decode at the cave, this was Nora's and Tripp's child. A little girl by the looks of it."
Alex gasped when the realization hit him. " Nora and Tripp had a baby? Together? Are you sure?"
Michael nodded. "I'm fairly certain, yes. Alex, that's my sister in that pod, and your aunt. Or great aunt? I don't know, but do you understand what that means, Alex?"
Alex was at a loss and he struggled to think clearly. A baby. In a pod. A baby that was related to Michael, and to himself. A baby that was related to Michael, and to himself!
He felt like crying when he looked at Michael. "Michael, do you mean that—you and I—this baby—," he had to take another deep breath to center himself. "Are you telling me that there's a baby in a pod, a baby that's related to you and me. Are you telling me—Michael, what are you telling me?"
Michael's eyes were shining with unshed tears when he answered. "I think you know what I'm telling you, Alex, don't you? Please, tell me that you understand."
Alex nodded slowly. "You mean that I'll have to look into forging a birth certificate for her, and once everything's set up, and you and Liz have performed more tests, we'll release her from the pod and bring her home and raise her as our daughter. That's what you mean, right?"
Michael burst into tears and laughed at the same time. "That is exactly what I'm mean. Alex, what do you say? I'm sorry that I'm springing this on you, and there's still so many things to think and talk about. And I do want you to have a say in all of this. You don't have to make a decision tonight. And you can say no. I need you to know that. You can say no, and we'll be fine. Please, Alex, you can say no. I love you, no matter what, and I love you more than anything on this planet, or any other planet. I just—"
Michael's rambling was interrupted by Alex, who flung himself at Michael and kissed him harder and more desperate than he'd ever kissed him. Michael kissed back, and suddenly they were both crying and laughing and kissing, tears making their kisses taste salty.
They hugged each other tight and continued to kiss, until they both had calmed down considerably.
Alex took Michael's left hand in his. It was the hand his father had mangled with a hammer a decade and a half ago. The hand Max had healed. The hand, where a golden band around Michael's ring finger was a constant reminder of their endless love. He lifted Michael's hand to his mouth and kissed it. The back of Michael's hand, his fingers, the ring.
Then he looked up to Michael and nodded. "I love you more than life itself, Michael. I know how much you've dreamed about becoming a dad. At the same time, I felt miserable because it was clear, that I'd never be able to give you a biological child." Michael wanted to interrupt him, but Alex shook his head.
"No, Michael, please let me say this. I know that a biological child is not the answer, nor is it the only way to have a family. And I'm fairly certain, that there's one, maybe more, adoptive children in our future. But—there seems to be a child, a little girl, that in the most miraculous and inexplicable ways, is related to both of us. How could I possibly say no to this? I couldn't. I can't. I won't."
Michael's eyes were wide with wonder and wet with fresh, unshed tears, and Alex felt like he'd never loved Michael more than in this very moment. He linked his left hand with Michael's. "I'm in. I'm all in. You. Me. And our— daughter."
~*~
- One year (and one) day later –
Alex sat on the couch and let his eyes wander across their extended living room, taking in the things that were the same as the year before, and taking in the differences. The couch was the same, the fireplace, too. The Christmas tree wasn't the same, but it looked quite similar.
There were several new family pictures up on the wall, though, and their living room had at least doubled in size thanks to the large glass winter garden Michael had built over the summer.
"We have a big and growing family, Alex. When they all come over, we need the space. But even if it's just us, sitting in a winter garden is a great way to sit outside without actually being outside, especially during the colder months."
And indeed, it had become their new favorite room and personal oasis. Alex loved the in-floor heating, Rosa's contributions in the form of colorful throw pillows and a hand-woven tapestry depicting a starry New Mexico night, and Michael with his knack for plants, had turned the winter garden into a lush greenhouse.
Alex heard a noise from the hallway and turned his head, just in time to see Michael enter the room, holding a sleepy baby safe in his arms. Michael and her were both dressed in identically patterned Christmas onesies, matching the one Alex was currently wearing.
Alex's heart grew three sizes taking in the picture of the man he loved, and their daughter, Noreen. He still had to pinch himself sometimes to make sure he wasn't dreaming the whole thing.
But she was theirs. Officially. Had been for little over a month now, and it had been the most blissful time of Alex's life.
They had taken their time after Michael and Max had found the pod. Taken the time to examine it and all the documents they'd found in the cave. As it turned out, the baby had been born mere days before Nora had been captured and brought to Caulfield.
Only a week after the birth, Nora had insisted on putting her in the pod. Just for a little while, until it was safe for her and Tripp to be together. It never came to that, though. Nora had been taken, and when Tripp went to the cave and tried to free their daughter, he couldn't. He didn't know how to, and no matter how hard he'd tried, he'd been unable to get her out.
One day, Mr. Jones had showed up at his doorstep and offered to help. Tripp had been desperate and agreed to show Jones the pod. But Jones betrayed him and kidnapped the pod. He'd had no interest in the baby, he'd just wanted the pod for himself. Jones had also been unable to open the pod, though.
It took Tripp years to find the pod again. When he did, he brought it to the far away cave where Michael and Max had found it. Over the years, he'd gathered documents he managed to steal from Caulfield, schematics Nora had drawn, and a diary she'd written when she was pregnant.
There was a lot about Michael in her diary, about Louise, even Isobel and Max. It was a treasure trove of information and had provided the three siblings with many new details of their respective family's histories.
After Liz and Michael had determined that the baby was well, Alex had started the process of organizing legal documents for her. The official story was, that they got pregnant with the help of a surrogate out of state, and even though Alex and Michael were both eager to start their new family, they let a good nine months pass before they opened the pod.
Nora had programmed the pod in a way that would allow only two people with specific genetic traits to open it – her and Tripp. Since Michael and Alex were direct descendants of them, their handprints on either side of the pod opened it, and they had welcomed Noreen into the world on a sunny November day.
Michael walked over to the couch and sat down next to Alex. They looked down at the child - their child - in awe. She was absolutely perfect.
"I still can't believe that we get to have this, get to have her. Michael, we are so lucky." Alex choked up a little.
Michael wiped away a single tear that was rolling down Alex's cheek. "We really are."
He pulled Alex into his arms and kissed him. "Ready to begin this new chapter of our life when you are, darlin'."
"I've never been more ready for anything in my life, Michael."

12 days of Malex Gift!
My gift this year is for Phoenix
Hope you enjoy it!
You can also view it here on AO3!
Cold creeped in through the metal of the truck’s cab despite the Chevy’s best efforts to pump heat directly from Satan’s most fiery pit onto Alex and Michael’s shins. Alex watched the plowed snow mounds and dark evergreen trees pass by his window as the approaching dark turned everything from blue, white, and green into shades of grey. Alex had never had a snowy Christmas or even snow that stayed around longer than a day or two at best. He’d never been skiing or snowboarding with a youth group for spring break or been posted somewhere blanketed in snow during a long cold winter. His life always seemed to hand him deserts, sand, and too-hot asphalt. So even with the world turning into sparkling greys and blacks, he was enchanted by everything he and Michael drove past on their way up to the cabin Isobel and Kyle had rented for a Christmas getaway. Things at the hospital had turned hectic and Kyle had found out a week before the big holiday that he wouldn’t be able to get away as planned. Isobel, in an act of magnanimacy, had offered the cabin to Michael and Alex for the holiday weekend instead of letting go of the rental and they’d jumped at the chance to get away from the suffocating, over-enthusiastic shows of holiday spirit they’d been enduring since December 1st.
“They really were serious about getting away,” Michael commented, squinting a little as he concentrated on the road ahead of them. Alex was supposed to be helping him look for a little red sign that said “Santa’s Vacation Home”. He’d rolled his eyes at the name, but when Isobel had shown him the AirBnB listing, he’d secretly wondered how nice a gift he should be getting her for Christmas. (“Oh, don’t worry about it. We’re the first guests so we got it at a really reasonable rate in the hopes we’d leave glowing reviews!”) She’d looked at him and Michael with a knowing smile when they’d jumped at the chance to get away without first hearing the details.
It wasn’t that he or Michael hated Christmas. In a couple years, they may too have a couple ugly Christmas sweaters in their closet and a favorite Christmas karaoke tune, but after Jesse’s and Louise’s death, it felt like a little too much effort to smile and fake it for their friends.
“Wait- is that it ahead?” Alex piped up, his eyes catching on something red half buried by a snow mound.
“Maybe?” Michael said uncertainly. He slowed the truck as they approached and they both squinted out of the windows. Between the increasing darkness and the shadows of the forest around them, it was impossible to make out anything from where they sat.
“Let me go see,” Alex offered, hand already on the door handle to climb out of the truck.
“No, wait! It might be slick out there, let me go--”
“I’ll be fine, Guerin. I’ll go slow,” Alex snapped, annoyed at the unspoken assertion that Alex couldn’t handle himself. Michael held up his hands and pressed his lips shut in retreat. Alex wanted to feel bad, did feel bad about snapping, but he hated being coddled because of his leg. Michael usually wasn’t one to say anything, but Alex might have been feeling a little touchy since he’d misstepped earlier that day before Michael had picked him up for the long trip to the mountains and twisted his knee. It’d been smarting ever since and Alex took that as a personal challenge to push through it and prove that he wasn’t hurt. He knew he was being bull-headed, but he didn’t want to ruin their first vacation away together since reuniting by letting his leg get to him.
As soon as he put his full weight down on his legs he regretted being a hard-headed, stubborn idiot. His knee felt stiff and swollen under his sleeve and he was already grimacing at how it would feel when he was able to take off his prosthesis later. He took a tentative step forward and his leg barked like an untrained dog. Alex grit his teeth and took another step and then another, navigating the mostly dry asphalt to stand in front of the red sign. He brushed some of the snow off with his bare hand and saw “Santa’s Vacation Home” in white lettering. He turned and gave Michael a thumbs-up and Michael pulled the truck into the drive and waited for Alex to limp his way over to the passenger side and climb in. It was too much to expect that Michael, who wouldn’t look away at the worst of times, would not have noticed Alex’s lop-sided gait.
“Your leg hurting?” Michael asked, shooting him a worried look before putting the truck back into drive and starting up the partially covered driveway.
“A little,” Alex confessed grumpily. There was no way he’d be able to hide his injury from Michael as soon as they got into the house. He was mentally hoping the place had some Ibuprofen. He didn’t want to bring out the heavy hitter painkillers in his bag unless he absolutely had to.
“Well, we’re almost there. This place had a jacuzzi tub, right? Maybe we can take a bath and it’ll help soothe the muscle or something?” Michael suggested. The faint sexual suggestion under the offer was lost behind the tension in Michael’s voice as he navigated around some deep ruts in the driveway.
“Yeah, maybe,” Alex agreed, hand going up for the ‘Oh Shit’ grab handle on the truck's ceiling and not finding one. The jostling was not helping the pain in his leg so he flattened his hand against the roof as he tried to brace himself against the bouncing as they rolled forward. No matter how slow Michael drove, it seemed they were always moving too fast to keep from jarring themselves. They fell silent as they continued down the drive until a few winking lights finally came into view. Anticipation filled the trucks cab as they pulled closer to the welcoming glow until they were parked in front of an A-Frame cabin built against the side of a hill. The cabin had a circle driveway that allowed Michael to pull the truck up close to the front entrance. The convenience was appreciated after the rough ride. As soon as Michael cut the engine the cold started leaching through the metal frame to steal away the heat.
“Iz said it would be unlocked with a key under the mat if we needed it,” Michael repeated from memory. “You wanna go ahead and go in and check it out while I get the bags?”
“I can get my own bag,” Alex started hotly, unbuckling his safety belt and pushing it to the side. Michael held up his hands again to stop his protest before he got too far in.
“Alex, I know you can. You’re a very, very capable individual that I have no doubt could walk across glass without flinching, but you don’t have to. Let me just save your knee the extra ten pounds this once and you can get me back by bench pressing me in bed or something,” Michael said, ending with a joke to try and lessen the tension in Alex’s shoulders. Alex stared at him for a moment unflinching and then a small smile creased one corner of his mouth.
“Bench press you in bed?” he questioned, trying to hold back a full fledged grin and failing miserably.
“I said what I said,” Michael retorted with a huff, leaning back into his seat and crossing his arms in mock offense. Alex snorted in amusement leaned across the bench seat, placing a quick, loud kiss on Michael’s cheek in apology.
“You’d like that too much,” he answered before scooting back to his side of the bench and opening the truck door.
“You bet your ass I would,” Michael called after him, opening his own door and stepping out into the frigid night air. He pulled a pair of gloves out of his pocket and shoved his hands into them quickly before hunching his shoulders and leaning over the side of the truck to grab his and Alex’s overnight bags. Alex had already limped his way up to the door and Michael watched him open it and step into the golden glow of the house. He hurried behind him thinking about how warm it looked in the house versus out there in the snow and ice.
As soon as he stepped in, Michael felt the warmth of the house envelope him. He gently kicked the door shut behind him and stood still in the entryway, eyes closed and head tilted back as he soaked in the heat. He’d never understand why people willingly sought out colder climates when they could be warm.
“You going to stand there all night?” Alex called from further inside. Michael opened his eyes and looked in the direction he thought he’d heard the voice. Alex was standing at the end of the entryway. He had his hands in his pocket and was trying his best to look casual, but Michael noted that most of his weight was shifted onto his left leg.Despite that, he looked good and Michael had to take a personal moment to shake the stars from his eyes as he looked him over. Alex’s good looks never failed to take him off guard when he least expected it.
“Which way to the bedroom?” Michael asked, hefting the bags up by his side. Alex nodded towards a staircase a few feet from the inside of the door. Michael went and dropped the bags onto the bottom two stairs and then turned to look at Alex.
“Have you looked around the whole place yet?” Michael asked teasingly, knowing Alex probably hadn’t made it any further than where he was standing. Michael hadn’t been that far behind him getting into the house and while the cabin was small, he didn’t think Alex would purposefully leave him out of the fun of exploring.
"No, but come look at what the owners left us," Alex said, jerking his head behind him before turning on his heel slowly and leading the way further into the cabin. Michael watched him and despite the limp, he looked as good as ever in his dark blue jeans and black leather jacket. ‘That ass…’ Michael admired wistfully to himself.
Alex disappeared around a corner and Michael shook himself out of his admiration of Alex's many fine assets to follow him. He peeled off his gloves and stuffed them into his pocket while moving in the direction Alex had disappeared. The covered entryway opened into one great room. It had cathedral ceilings with the back wall of the cabin nothing but windows that looked out onto the dark, snow covered forest beyond. Michael could faintly make out some stars through the trees and it made him feel a little less claustrophobic in the press of the forest. There was a large stone fireplace in the far corner of the room with a leather sectional couch in front of it with faux fur throws thrown artfully over it in chocolate browns, greys, and creams. Michael turned his head and found Alex waiting at him behind a dark granite topped kitchen island. There were two bowls and some jars of sugar and flour huddled together on the top with a red bow and ribbon surrounding them. Alex was looking over a piece of paper and Michael walked up behind him to read over his shoulder.
"Gingerbread?" Michael asked in surprise, eyes looking over what he realized were ingredients sitting on the counter in front of him. He chuckled to himself and Alex looked over at his shoulder at him in curiosity.
"Does gingerbread mean something different to you than it does to me?" Alex asked, smiling at the soft, amused look on Michael’s face.
"Isobel and I always make lewd gingerbread men for Christmas. We have since high school. It's the one Christmas tradition I have," Michael explained, gently taking the paper from Alex’s hand. "Though this isn't her recipe. It's similar, but she adds more cinnamon and a little cayenne for a kick."
"Wait! What are lewd gingerbread men?" Alex asked, turning his body to lean his right side against the island and pinning Michael with a suspicious look.
"We'd pipe dicks and boobs and ball gags and stuff on then. Sometimes we'd make them with candy. Red hots for the balls, Mike ‘n Ikes for the penises, trimmed down dried apricots for the vulvas..." Michael explained with a mischievous grin. Alex snickered into Michael's shoulder appreciatively.
"Are you two really thirteen at heart?" Alex asked, eyes still bright with mirth.
"Parts of us. The rest are fully matured as you well know," Michael said, setting the recipe down and stepping closer into Alex's space, his hand sneaking under the leather jacket to grasp at Alex’s waist.
"Want to make some cookies?" Alex asked, pretty sure Michael was already distracted from baking by the way he'd started trailing kisses down Alex's jaw towards his neck.
"Maybe later. Let's go check out the bedroom and get you into something more comfortable?" Michael's voice sent shivers of pleasure down Alex’s spine.
"I don't know if I can do those stairs right now," Alex admitted apologetically, wrapping his arms affectionately around Michael's neck and leaning closer to let their bodies press into each other. "But that couch looks pretty damn comfortable, so maybe we could….?"
He trailed off when Michael’s grasp changed on his waist, moving to slip under the dark grey cabled sweater he wore under his jacket. Alex felt a sigh leave his body unconsciously at how good it felt to have Michael’s warm hands against his skin and then Michael’s lips were on his, first tender and then with more ardor as Alex opened his mouth and invited him in. Alex pushed himself harder against Michael’s body and Michael responded by tightening his arms around him in return.
"Fuck, Michael," Alex gasped as Michael moved his mouth from his to return to his jaw and neck but with tongue and teeth, leaving delicious stinging kisses that made Alex feel on fire inside. Michael's hands smoothed down Alex’s body until he was gripping his ass, hands kneading the muscles and making Alex feel weak in the knees. He was melting into the sensations Michael was evoking in him, his fingers tangled into Michael’s curls, and then he was whispering something into Alex’s ear.
"What?" Alex asked, reluctant to come out of the warm head space he’d been floating in.
"I said 'Hold on'," Michael repeated with a grin in his voice. Alex had only a moment to feel confused before Michael's body was ducking down and Alex felt his strong hands gripping the backs of his thighs and then lifting him. On reflex, he wrapped his legs around Michael's waist and tightened his hold on his shoulders, a shout of surprise knocked loose from him at unexpected action.
"What are you doing?!" Alex exclaimed, leaning back as far as he could without disrupting their balance and the hold Michael had on him. He fought his knee jerk reaction to fight against the hold.If anyone else had done this, he would've rather fallen to the floor in a fit of pride than let someone carry him, but it was Michael… and Michael would always be the exception to his finely honed, well defined rules of how much he would allow someone else to give to him, how much he would allow someone else to love him. In fact, Alex didn't like to admit to anyone, sometimes even himself, how much he loved when Michael manhandled him like this.
“As nice as that couch is, we haven’t seen the whole place yet and I really wanna see the bedroom right now,” Michael responded, his eyes dark. “So why don’t you get a good grip on me, just like the one I’ve got on you, and we’ll go tour the upstairs together. Maybe get naked and mess up the sheets before dinner.”
He emphasized his words by flexing his hands against Alex’s ass where they’d naturally gravitated to “for balance”. Alex smiled and shook his head slowly at Michael’s ridiculousness even as Michael turned them and started to make his way back to the stairs and up to the bedroom. Alex held on tightly with his thighs, letting his hands continue to run through Michael’s hair as he ascended towards the bedroom loft area. Once they cleared the half wall, Alex’s heart gave a little lurch of surprise. He felt his mouth drop at how gorgeous the bedroom was. A sleigh style, king-sized bed dominated most of the bedroom, with thick, dark espresso blankets and another brown and grey mottled faux fur blanket artfully draped on it. There were also so many pillows which looked amazing in their matching and complementary tones, but seemed excessive in number for someone like Alex who was happy to have one old, mostly flat pillow under his head. They rounded the corner onto the landing and the view of the rest of the bedroom was blocked and Alex got to appreciate the view of the rest of the cabin from upstairs.
Alex expected Michael to put him down now that they’d made it upstairs, but he kept walking unil Alex felt his back hitting the mattress. He opened his mouth to say something, but Michael immediately started kissing him again, pushing their bodies until they were both sprawled diagonally across the mattress. Alex let himself be arranged, enjoying the feeling of Michael taking care of him.
They both started pushing off their jackets, tossing them unceremoniously off the side of the bed, lips barely parting as they began to paw at the hems of each other’s shirts. They did have to part to take those off and Michael felt a laugh bubbling out of him as he started working on his own jeans while Alex did the same with his. They were scrabbling out of their clothes like teenagers with a curfew.
“What’s so funny?” Alex asked, a little breathless and already looking deliciously tousled as he squirmed shirtless on the bed, pushing at his jeans and underwear. Michael laughed again before leaning down to give Alex a reassuring kiss before answering.
“I was only half joking about messing up the sheets, but then I saw this bed and couldn’t stop myself. You’re really very distracting, especially when you’re pressed against me, letting me carry you, and you’re playing with my hair. Think I just developed a very specific kink in the last five minutes,” Michael explained, abandoning his own pants on the floor and reaching forward to take over dragging Alex’s down his thighs. He quickly disengaged Alex’s prosthesis and set it down on the floor by the bed before stripping him completely naked.
“Fuck… I hate the military, but I love what it’s done to your body,” Michael breathed, bending down and licking a broad stripe up the center valley where Alex’s abdominal muscles were flexed. Alex laughed and knocked his right leg against Michael’s arm pointedly.
“All the things it’s done to my body?” Alex asked and Michael tensed, realizing what he’d just said. Michael looked up at Alex to see he still had a smile on his face and Michael relaxed as he realized he was teasing him. Michael grabbed Alex’s leg and lifted it, placing it flat along the line of his body. He could tell by the way Alex gasped that the move was not only unexpected, but that he could feel exactly how turned on Michael was by their activities. Michael held his gaze for a moment before bending his head to place slow, deliberate kisses down what was left of Alex’s calf, to his knee, and then grazed his teeth at the beginning of his thigh, drawing a gasp from Alex that made his body throb in response. His hand preceded his descent down Alex’s leg and he could feel the small quivers the muscles gave as he kept moving further and further down. Michael gave a quick check and could see that Alex was still hard against his stomach. He internally gave a sigh of relief that he’d apparently chosen the right thing to do. Alex could tease all he wanted and act like his leg wasn’t a big deal, but Michael knew he still held some aesthetic insecurities about it when they were intimate together.
“Way to avoid a question,” Alex teased when Michael was only a couple inches from the crease between his thigh and groin. Michael looked up Alex’s body and grinned. He smoothly maneuvered Alex’s leg off his shoulder and back to where the knee joint naturally cradled his hip. Michael moved up and hovered over Alex’s mouth, locking his eyes with Alex’s, giving him a moment to appreciate all the wonderfully intimate ways they fit against each other before speaking.
“I may not say it enough, but I hope you know that I love every, single, fucking, inch of you, past and present.” Michael paused after speaking, watching Alex try to shy away from what he was saying. Michael watched him open his mouth, ready to say something derisive or self-deprecating, but then stop himself. He closed his eyes and Michael watched Alex center himself underneath him, breath through the voices that were obviously in his head and push them out for the time being. It was breathtaking to watch. When he opened his eyes again, Michael smiled down at him. “You are the strongest person I know, and I know some strong ass people.”
“Michael,” Alex said, a note of pleading in his voice. He was reaching the limit of compliments he’d be able to take and Michael knew it so he backed off. As much as he wanted to press every reverent feeling of love and admiration into Alex’s very soul with his words and body, he knew as well as anyone that Alex had to be ready to accept it.
“Now where were we?” Michael asked, rolling his hips playfully and sparking a wave of pleasure between their bodies. Alex sighed and rolled his hips in retaliation, his lip caught between his teeth, and making Michael groan at the picture he made. They moved against each other like teenagers, their bodies molding against each other for the best friction as their mouths devoured one another. It was quick and messy, keyed up as they were, and at the end of it they laid next to each other, breathing deeply. They were on their backs, shoulders pressed to one another and staring through the sky light at the stars above them.
“We should clean up,” Alex commented, though he reached out his pinky to hook onto Michael’s next to him. Michael curled his pinky with Alex’s and smiled before turning over onto his side to fully face Alex. Alex mirrored him, a small smile on his own face. Michael reached out and ran his fingers through Alex’s hair, smoothing out some of the strands that were standing up messily. He sighed and rested his hand on the smooth skin of Alex’s neck, letting his head hang down to rest on the mattress. He loved this man so much it scared him and if he kept looking at him, Michael knew they’d just end up getting messy again.
“I”ll go get the rag. Then we’ll go make lewd gingerbread men, right?” Michael asked, unable to keep his hand still on Alex’s neck and running his fingers over his jaw as he waited for his answer.
“Not if you keep touching me like that we won’t,” Alex replied on a shaky breath when Michael traced his kiss-swollen bottom lip with his thumb. “And I think we should make them. Send pictures to Isobel as a thank you for this weekend.”
“Yeah, I’m definitely going to owe her next Christmas,” Michael agreed. He pulled his hand away reluctantly and sat up. He got up and found his pants on the floor. He dug his phone out of his pants pocket before heading towards the bathroom for a warm rag. He looked over his shoulder at Alex who had rolled back onto his back and was staring once more at the sky. If ever there was a moment he knew he was well and truly gone for Alex Manes, this might have been it. He forced himself to unlock and look at his phone, bringing up his messenger app.
<Michael> Hey Iz, Alex and I got to the cabin. Thanks for this. It’s really something. The owners left stuff to make gingerbread with, recipe and all. <Izzy> Ooooo, making lewd gingerbread men without me? <Michael> Only if it’s okay with you. I know that’s *our* thing and all… <Izzy> Only if I can make them with Kyle when he gets off work. <Michael> It’s a deal. <Izzy> Send me pictures? <Michael> Duh. Merry Christmas, Iz. Love you. <Izzy> Merry Christmas, Michael. Love you too!
THE END!

One day, Michael Guerin is staying in the shed out back behind the Manes property. The next, he's gone with a note that says he's been given a chance to take his scholarship at UNM early. For a year, that piece of paper is all Alex has until Michael comes back for the holidays and Alex gets a chance to take advantage of missed opportunities.
My @malexsanta contribution written for @changingthingslikeleaves! It’s a slice of canon divergence and playing with the timeline just a little, so I could theme this all around the holidays.

it's michael and alex's first christmas together as a couple and michael has some ideas about holiday activities they should try out. or, five christmas traditions that michael + alex try, and one tradition they start for themselves.
my @malexsanta gift for the brilliant molly @manesalex. this entire thing is christmas fluff because that’s what molly wanted, and if i know anything about molly, it’s that she loves malex loving each other. i hope you enjoy this, you sweet and wonderful woman!
Christmas isn’t really Michael’s thing. None of his foster homes were particularly generous when it came to holiday cheer, and although Isobel usually made him come to one of her Christmas lunches every year, beyond that he really had no reason to celebrate the holiday.
“We’re aliens, Is, he’d say, when she despaired of him. “We’re not even from this planet and you want to hold me to some outdated Christian tradition of-”
“Fine, whatever, Michael,” she’d snap. “Just be there by one o’clock.”
And he was never going to argue with a free lunch (or the opportunity to spend time with Isobel, really), but that was the extent of it.
This year, though. This year was different. This year, he had Alex. Was with Alex.
