Welcome!
Welcome to the official tumblr page of "The Archmage is Dead." "The Archmage is Dead," is a novel that I'm working on.
What if you suddenly became the face of hope? For ten young mages that dream just became a reality, albeit due to bloody circumstances. The Kingdom of Origin has lost the Archmage, losing the cabinet that worked alongside him as well. Our main characters have been chosen to fill their roles, but they’re not as excited as they should be.
Join as this unlikely assortment of mages take on discrimination, politics, relationships, cults, and demonic entities

god. we really coulda had sneeb as asriel or lee scoresby. i think anyone and everyone's feeling of emptiness at that missed opportunity together could never fill sneeb's own feeling of emptiness of never getting cast in either those roles or the show in general. man.
I’d give literally anything for his asriel but I also think James McAvoy was perfect casting and ate it up. But Lee Scoresby? Come on my dude!! Or like he could have done John Perry opposite Andrew Scott!Lee Scoresby. Either way. My one solace is HDM was cast before good omens and now that he has more mainstream clout, if they ever make the book of dust into a show…

finally saw the last episode of his dark materials with my sister today, and... seeing it all on a proper tv screen instead of my ancient laptop this time around, there was a lump in my throat before the opening credits even finished... and yes, i was in tears once again as soon as they were revisiting the bench at midsummer...
at least i wasn’t as much of a weeping mess as i was the first time i saw it. i think it helps when you’ve got someone next to you asking you questions every so often to clarify things (curse you bbc, for making so much dialogue too quiet to hear fully!). and also, i’m recovering from a winter virus, so any pathetic sniffling on my part during farewell scenes was handwaved away as sickness instead of... you know. crying over two fictional children.
(and now, all there is to do is... wait to see if the book of dust gets adapted for tv, too!!)

i saw someone on here (possibly a mutual idk) talking about how bad the book of dust was, and i totally found la belle sauvage underwhelming, but i'm listening to the secret commonwealth audiobook and i'm really liking it so far tbh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
like it feels like pullman has lived with a lot of the same questions that readers of the first trilogy had and is really interrogating what daemons are and how they function and to what degree they are autonomous beings, and i find all of that really satisfying, plus there's the whole thriller aspect to it. like he's experimenting with genre too. idk i think it's good

there had been many times, late at night, lyra fantasized about him, the way he might feel in her, how he might kiss her, cumming in her. she looks up at him, his heavy frame over her as he fucks into her, his cock stretching her out perfectly, the bedframe under them squeaking with each thrust. "oh fuuuck, malcolm." she moans, the orgasm building within her, ankles crossed, keeping in fully sheathed in her tight pussy. it didn't take too long for him to be pushing her over the edge, the orgasm flooding through her system as she squeezes around him, pussy slick with arousal, gripping him, keeping him in, needing to milk him. "please, cum in me, please." oh how her tune changed from earlier.
Tumblr media
Malcolm grinned at the young woman- he hadn't had seducing the babytsitter on his bingo card for tonight but fuck he was glad he did. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him close, "Oh yeah? Have you? Wanted to be a mother to my children, and give us a larger family?" he whispered huskily, "Show me. Cum, show me how loud you can moan."

The Grades of Separation
The Grades of Separation is an idea I thought of a while ago and thought I might as well share. It is numbered from 0 to 4, with 0 being full unity between human and daemon and 4 being total separation. This concept was originally just for the development of my own daemon philosophy, daemointus, but I see no reason why it can't be used by fans of His Dark Materials or by daemians if one so chooses.
Grade 0: Complete or near-complete unity between human and daemon, characterized by a lack of knowledge or serious acknowledgment of one's daemon. Communication or projection incredibly unlikely. Most common grade in our world.
Grade 1: Slight separation between human and daemon, but little to no outer-body presentation. Characterized by an awareness of one's daemon and some level of autonomy, but one may not identify their daemon as such. If the daemon is properly identified, they may be given a name or their species identified if settled. Communication may be possible but unlikely.
Grade 2: Significant separation between human and daemon, but link still intact. Daemon is entirely outside of human's physical body with their own set of subtle bodies and is fully autonomous and sapient with their own personality, wants, and needs. Communication is almost guaranteed at this grade. Daemon may be observed by their human and those capable of seeing subtle substance. This is the most common grade seen in His Dark Materials.
Grade 3: Slightly greater separation between human and daemon than Grade 2 with link still intact but loosened significantly. Daemon can travel away from their human without causing harm or suffering, and is able to keep their subtle bodies sustained separately from their human. The witches from His Dark Materials, along with Lyra Silvertongue, Will Parry, Malcolm Polstead, and Anthony Hassall are all examples of this grade.
Grade 4: Total separation between human and daemon, usually resulting in death. This usually happens due to the practice of intercision, but brute force has also been referenced as causing this separation. Those who survive this separation usually suffer greatly as a result of such severe separation, though exactly why isn't clear. Both human and daemon seem to appear lifeless and apathetic, and in the Subtle Knife a big point is made about them being fearless and therefore making terrifying soldiers.
Grades 3 and 4 are noticeably close, with both being achieved through forceful separation in some way or another. The only noticeable difference as that all cases of Grade 3 separation is willful on at least one side, while there's no evidence of this for Grade 4 separation that doesn't involve intercision.
Advancement in grades isn't linear either. Will Parry, for example, jumped from Grade 0 to Grade 3 instantly. And most cases of Grade 4 do not go through Grade 3 first. Regression from Grade 1 to Grade 0 is probably also possible, though beyond that it's hard to imagine regression as being possible.
If there's anything I missed or could add to this idea please let me know, input is always grealy appreciated.

i dont know anything about lwg ive never even heard of it before this but i understand the struggle of really enjoying a book series with the most dogshit disgusting romance. i have a complicated love-hate relationship with his dark materials and the book of dust series. no, philip pullman, i do not think its normal that malcolm (31) is in love with lyra (20) considering he met her when she was a literal newborn and he was 11. And he was her teacher. i understand the struggle
AUGHGHHGHGHGH yeah its like..... like on the one hand he seems pretty aware like the book will point it out and again the pointis that these people are just ridiculously messy but so often is it entirely unnecessary

Title: From Eden Rating: T/M  Characters: [Lyra Silvertongue/Will Parry], Pantalaimon, Kirjava, Elaine Parry, Mary Malone, Malcolm Polstead, Serafina Pekkala, Iorek Byrnison Words: 1088541 Chapters: 29/29 Summary:
“Maybe it means nothing. It just is.”
“Everything means something,” Lyra said severely. “We just have to figure out how to read it.” (Lyra’s Oxford, pg 6)
The prophecy contained more than anybody was told. As both Lyra and Will work towards reuniting, they find themselves carried willingly towards that hidden destiny.
Notes: Adult!Lyra & Will reunion fic, set after TAS. This was written before The Secret Commonwealth was published and was based on my (apparently idealistic) TSC speculations, as guessed from interview tidbits, The Lantern Slides, Lyra’s Oxford, La Belle Sauvage, and Once Upon a Time in the North. Basically it’s a reunion fic written for the purpose of giving Will & Lyra what they deserve (happiness!!!! family!! peace!). Also Malcolm Polstead has STRICTLY big brother vibes here. Idk what that Mal/Lyra mess was in TSC but it ain’t here 😌 chapter 1

I believe all the reviews saying the book of dust isn’t as good as Michael Sheen’s narration of it but I’m having a blast. When malcolm learns about baby Lyra and is like “why won’t her mom take care of her?” Babygirl where to even begin…

I finished The Secret Commonwealth during the week. Overall, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the main His Dark Materials trilogy or even La Belle Sauvage, but it was still fine. In large part that’s because it’s trying to tell a fairly different story than the others: HDM is written like a fairly standard kids’ fantasy adventure, even if it gets pretty dark in places, and LBS is a mix of that with more emphasis on the spy-versus-spy stuff the adults are involved in. But in TSC, Lyra is an adult, and while the stakes are just as high as before, the conflict all seems more grounded and realistic without the filter of a child’s POV
The main beats of the novel are pretty familiar if you’ve read the previous four books. Research into Dust is booming again thanks to the discovery of a plant that can be used to see it, amber spyglass-style, so the Magesterium is trying to suppress that by disappearing people again. Meanwhile Mrs Coulter’s brother is trying to hunt down Lyra to get revenge for her disappearance at the end of HDM, and he’s teamed up with the son of the guy Malcolm killed in LBS who also wants revenge. Lyra’s motivation is that she and Pan had a falling out, he’s gone to fight the philosopher that he blames for ruining Lyra’s imagination, and she’s heartbroken and trying to find him again
Lyra’s world is even more fantastical this time around. There were witches and talking bears in the first trilogy, of course, but this book focuses a lot more on things that even the average person in-universe thinks is fantasy. LBS introduced fairies and the Neverland-like fairy realm near the end, which at the time felt out of left field. TSC starts to do something with that finally, pulling back from the “church bad” messaging that was the focus of HDM to explore that maybe pure logic and reason swings the pendulum too much the other way, and maybe folk spiritualism good?
I mentioned in a previous post that I also got big queer allegory vibes from Lyra’s adventure while separated from Pan. Not everyone treats her badly, but people on the street generally avoid her, shopkeepers often won’t engage, and some people outright harass or assault her. As she moves further east, it keeps getting worse, until she arrives in a city where it’s straight up illegal to be outside during the day without a daemon. However, she does find a community of other daemon-less people, and they support each other and have a network across Europe of people and places that it’s safe to go to. I feel like there’s something there, but I don’t know nearly enough to say anything else about it
What made this book a little hard to read was how grounded all the violence felt. This is not a happy book: Lyra is on a downward spiral the entire time and it never gets any better. Pullman really had it out for her this time. The new Master of Jordan College kicked her out and her room got trashed. Pan broke up with her. She keeps getting harassed for not having a daemon. She meets up with one of Malcolm’s contacts, and their apartment is firebombed. It culminates with her being on a train with a group of soldiers who beat the shit out of her and nearly rape her. She never gets a chance to recuperate from any of this, and it just sucks
