#The Subtle Knife

I feel like His Dark Materials doesn’t fit in with other children’s books. I first read the series when I was around 12 and I couldn’t understand much of it. It was only when I reread it at 16 that I could really absorb all the information within it.

I understand why it was put within that category, but the complexity is so much greater than other books listed for the same ages. I’m an enjoyer of YA fiction but most I’ve read don’t even have a tenth of the worldbuilding and complexy as His Dark Materials.

This is all just my opinion but I think it should be more acknowledged that this series isn’t just for young kids. It’s a rich world full of information and messages that deserve to be analyzed and understood. It fundamentally changed me as a person. It’s much more than just a simple children’s series.

I love the simplicity in Mrs Coulter's design. In a world where everyone's soul is able to think and speak on its own, in a shape with clear connotations about your own personality and mindset, here is a woman whose very essence is unnamed, completely unwilling to communicate, in a shape with unclear associations (in western and northern Europe at least) that has the most similarity with an engineer but with an unfamiliar beauty that is both off-putting and entrancing. I just think it's neat story telling.

I love series where the main character(s) didn’t actually save the world to save the world.

They were just doing something else and happened to save the world at the same time.
