it really is looking like i'm gonna finally have to make a choice between which citizenship i want to keep and it occurred to me that i'm not even attached to the idea of being canadian in an emotional or personal sense it's the first world privilege of having the citizenship/passport and the economic benefits of that, including the ability to (relatively) easily access funding as an artist, that makes me hesitate giving it up. but emotionally i don't think i could recover from having to formally give up my malaysian citizenship it would feel like a part of me has been denied or taken and it's not due to attachment to the state or gov of msia but to the people and culture and my family... i can find a way to live with myself and inhabit this world no longer being a citizen of the first world but i couldn't live with myself if i abandoned my home country for the first world it would feel like a betrayal of myself and my grandparents and of my own politics and i can't do it. but to embrace it wholeheartedly requires giving up that first world privilege which is scary, if you are someone who has had it most of your life, and i recognize that even having the choice is a privilege as well. but i would not be able to respect myself if i made my decision based on that fear or allowed it to guide me. the majority of people on earth do not have that ability to choose nor the economic advantage of being a western citizen; i am no different from them, not "better" nor "special", and if they can do it, i can too.
#it will also mean having to partly detransition bc the msian gov does not recognize my gender/name change#and there is no legal way to access hrt there afaik bc it is illegal to be trans#and perhaps white people wouldnt understand that in my heart i would rather be malaysian and partially closeted than canadian and out#many live their entire lives that way. i am not special#i have no affection or attachment to my canadian passport#if i had to be treated as a foreigner in canada i could stomach it#but every time i have to walk thru the foreigners line at msian border and state im not malaysian feels like a wound. it feels like a lie

Mawar's Sorrow
Roses are red That is not true Roses come in so many colors Roses must be red they say So they bleed people dry Dying them crimson with cruelty To soak roses in blood is not truth But to them it does not matter So how long until all roses are red?

Trans Horror Authors
My January reading challenge is to read a book by a trans author. Luckily, there are many out there to choose from! Here are some who write in the horror genre, because that's my area of expertise. If you know of others, whether in horror or other genres, reply with your recommendations!
In no particular order...
Caitlin R. Kiernan
A genderfluid Irish-American paleontologist who also writes spectacular cosmic horror, what's not to love? They've been repping queerness since the 80s and have a robust library to choose from, so you're bound to find something you'll like!
Poppy Z. Brite
Billy Martin, whose work is published under the name Poppy Z. Brite, was a big name in the Gothic horror scene of the 1990s and continues to be a frequently-recommended author, although he doesn't publish as much horror these days.
Julya Oui
A Malaysian trans woman and prolific short story author. She has several collections out that you can browse, if short stories are your speed! Maybe start with Taiping Tales of Terror, which draws heavily on her native folklore and influences.
Rivers Solomon
A nonbinary, intersex Black author now living in the U.K., Solomon has three books out and they all look spectacular. Their books lean more toward sci-fi/fantasy, but their newest title Sorrowland looks to be pretty solidly Gothic as well.
Gretchen Felker-Martin
Trans woman, film critic, and unapologetically outspoken. Her best-known book is Manhunt, a post-apocalyptic horror tale that doesn't pull any punches. She's got another new release slated for 2024 to keep an eye on.
Hailey Piper
One of the most prolific authors I can name off the top of my head, Hailey also has several novellas out in the world + a few novels. If the intersection of queer fiction, body horror, and cosmic horror sounds like your thing, you can find something in her backlist. Also she's here on tumblr, go learn more at @haileypiperfights
Eve Harms
A bit of a new player on the field, but well worth checking out. Eve is a Jewish trans woman. Her debut novel, Transmuted, is a breathless body horror romp. She also makes a bunch of handmade zines, which I just think are neat :)
Natalie Ironside
One of Tumblr's very own better-known names, Natalie is queer, disabled, trans, hilarious, and author to at least three novels I can think of plus some other stuff too - go scope her out on @natalieironside for the details.
.....I know I'm missing a ton of people but these were the first ones that came to mind. I have to get back to writing, but I hope this inspires y'all to pick up a book you haven't read yet, and to add to my list down in the notes.
Happy reading, y'all :)

i recently found out about a book called 'becoming a malaysian trans man: gender, society, body and faith' by joseph n goh from monash university malaysia and it's an academic resource on how several malaysian trans men navigate their lives within the context of secular and religious persecution and i've been reading it and it's genuinely making me feel so emotional bc anything discussing the lives of trans malaysians is extremely extremely rare. i found a pdf upload of it here
for those who don't know, malaysia is one of 13 countries in the world that criminalizes being transgender and trans people in malaysia face police violence and arrest. earlier this year (2023) it was ranked the 2nd worst country in the world for civil rights for trans people. it is also my home country and one that i love very much, and will be returning to live in in the near future as an 'out' trans man who has medically transitioned overseas and can't 'pass' as my agab, so this topic has been weighing heavily on me and finding this book has been really helpful in making me feel less alone and afraid

book recs: aug-sept '23
THE BAYOU by arden powell -- queer horror novella! this is set in 1930s louisiana and like all good horror it's about horrible unburied secrets haunting you. but also gators and summer flooding and guilt and, uh, letting a hot mysterious man/fae/?other? rail you in a church. superb. no notes.
TELL ME I'M WORTHLESS by alison rumfitt -- MORE QUEER HORROR! TRANS HORROR!! this is a haunted house book but the haunting is modern british fascism and the house is made of TERFs. the writing is fantastic. it's like being trapped in a small room with someone who is screaming loudly and endlessly, but like, in a good way.
THE SECRET COUNTRY by pamela dean -- this is an oldschool portal fantasy that somehow manages to combine excellent diana wynne jones vibes with my most common stress nightmare, ie. the one where you're in the Show but you've been so busy choreographing for the Show that you've forgotten to learn your own lines. baffling. very enjoyable.
KNOCKOUT by sarah maclean -- listen. listen. this series is about a historical vigilante girl gang, and this is the romance between a lady explosives expert and the exasperated policeman she wants very much to bang (heheh. bang.) very miss fisher vibes and also, somehow, very Fuck The Police (...heheh.) I adored it.
AN ISLAND PRINCESS STARTS A SCANDAL by adriana herrera -- a very horny and fun f/f histrom about a venezuelan artist in paris and the duchess she is, again, extremely determined to bang. I love this series of adriana's, with all its glorious historical detail about the various latinx delegations to the grand paris exhibition.
THE SPIDER AND HER DEMONS by sydney khoo -- YA fantasy about a chinese-malaysian australian girl who is also, inconveniently, a spider demon. this has an aro-ace heroine and heaps of very cool and creepy body horror and made me desperate to go back to sydney and eat banh mi in cabramatta. a+.
WHITE CAT, BLACK DOG by kelly link -- so you know how kelly link is an absolute genius master of the short story form? you know how the best fairytale retellings are both chattily straightforward and bonkers weird? YEAH. my god this collection is so good.
