Around 3.8 million people experienced destitution in 2022, the charity said, adding that the figure has more than doubled from 1,550,000 in 2017.

The number of children was 1.04 million, up from 362,000 in 2017.

The organisation defines destitution as when someone cannot afford what they need to meet their most basic physical needs to stay warm, dry, clean and fed. ..."

Forest Fires (26-08-2007)

Context: Sadly, large forest fires are a common sight in the news. Sometimes F1 features them, and it felt odd to me that they were not mentioned despite being visible. Also, a motorsport book well worth reading ("Unless I'm Very Much Mistake, written by… [spoilers]) caused problems on a celebrity quiz.

During Turkey qualifying, the TV shot spotted what appeared to be a large forest fire visible from the pit lane. The fire was clearly a long way from the circuit, but the ITV commentators didn't talk about it. It got me thinking about media priorities.

This is not the only recent occasion that the view of sparkling carbon fibre and expensive grandstands has been marred by forest fire - only last year, the Malaysian GP was held amid some of the worst forest fires the region had experienced. On that occasion, the fires were mentioned in the qualifying broadcast because the sheer quantity of smoke was affecting the circuit conditions.

On a completely unrelated note, I was watching Celebrity Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? yesterday (not something I do very often - I was eating my tea and my parents happened to be watching it) The celebrities were a pair of GMTV presenters. There was a £2000 question on "Which sports commentator wrote an autobiography called "Unless I'm Very Much Mistaken?" (Should anyone need it, the answers are at the bottom of the entry). The options given were Dan Maskell, Murray Walker, David Coleman and someone else. It proved surprisingly tough for the GMTV presenters, who readily admitted that "between us, we know absolutely nothing about sport - we don't even who what sports these people commentate on". Then one of the celebs, clearly dredging up a cobwebbed memory, recalled that Murray Walker had been the commentator who would say a driver was going to win the race easily ten seconds before that driver came off the track. At that point, I thought that they were going to get the question right and smoothly go onto the next question.

No. They dithered and ummed and aahed, and eventually decided to phone their friend, Andrew. He knew everything about sport - or so the GMTV presenters would have us believe. After he'd asked for the question to be read out twice, he declared with some authority that the book had been written by David Coleman. At this point, my dad got rather worried.

After more dithering, the GMTV presenters decided to ask the audience. Statistically, this is what they should have done first - according to The Undercover Economist, asking the audience is more likely to get the right answer than phoning a friend, and according to common sense, the 50/50 lifeline is only useful in limited circumstances. In any case, the pair had already used the 50/50 lifeline. Anyway, the audience voted, and I readily expected that a large percentage would get the correct answer. The results came back - 67% said David Coleman had written the book, 26% plumped for Murray Walker and the other 7% opted for the other guy (Dan Maskell was voted for by nobody).

Based on the audience's vote, the celebrities decided to go for David Coleman. Fortunately for the charities that they were supporting, the pair pledged to pay the £1000 they'd just lost the charities from their own pockets.

- "Unless I'm Very Much Mistaken" was written by Murray Walker. If you haven't read it, I strongly recommend you do, because it is a fascinating account of his career, both in commentry and in advertising (he did the latter as his day job until 1982). He also read an audio version of the book. If you read the book, you'll be in good company - it was the highest-grossing book of 2002 (admittedly a year in which no new Harry Potter appeared), and netted good money for both writer and publisher. As a result, the basic details of the book (including who wrote it) are fairly common knowledge in book circles. See, it wasn't just a sports question.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to Throwback Thursday and welcome to June! Yep, five months gone!

Many thanks to everyone that contributed to WEDNESDAY WORDS yesterday. There were some very cool submissions. Really beautiful words. And we managed to inspire a few old faces to come out of the woodwork to contribute!

On this page, ‘Throwback Thursday’ is about memories. So, what do you remember? If I was to say the word FIGHT, what immediately comes to mind?

This wasn’t so much a fight, just a single punch, but it’s the closest I’ve ever come to a fight. I’m non-confrontational. I avoid fights! The Trouble said something very interesting the other day. She said, (and I’m paraphrasing) “Isn’t it amazing that you can just be living your life, minding your own business, not saying or doing anything to anyone but, despite that, someone (somewhere) is affected by something or nothing and, suddenly, they feel a way about you.” It’s true. As we speak – trust me - someone is reading this and seething! Seething about what I do not know! Some kid punched me in my eye once. My dad went round to his family house and confronted the boy. “Why did you punch my son?” he asked. The boy replied, “He’s always so happy!” So, there was I, minding my own business, and somebody over there was getting riled-up just because I was happy. Amazing, innit?

So, on this Throwback Thursday, what kind of memories does the word FIGHT conjure up for you?

Al Pacino having a child at 83? He will struggle to keep up with that little one! Lucky for him, he has the money to hire a nanny!

I had two young guys knock on my door yesterday, looking for me to give money to a charity. I said to them, “I give enough money to charity already.” I didn’t feel guilty. Look how much I give every year to the tax man, my local council, the oil companies and the privatised utility companies! I am helping to feed poor, deprived millionaires. I keep thinking of their sad, little faces. They need my money!

On Wednesday night, we had dinner with The Trouble’s best male friend from her secondary school. Known him more than 40 years! He lives local, with his wife, so the four of us ate local and bloody delicious it was too; an award-winning Indonesian/Thai/Malaysian restaurant called Jakarta in Colindale, of all places. We ordered too much, so we brought it home in a doggie bag and I’ll be eating it tonight! These friendships of 40+ years are priceless, aren’t they? The Trouble and I are both blessed to have some reliable, rock-solid friends that love us when they see us and love us when they don’t.

Is it nearly my favourite day? I think it is. I am quivering in anticipation. We have another fun-packed weekend ahead of us. The days are so stuffed with events and parties, I haven’t even got space for a Hove weekend in June! Might have to visit Lady Wesker mid-week?

All them cosmetic moguls constantly using publicity as a marketing tool is a widespread thing. Idk if other countries have the same thing going on w their cosmetic moguls, but for us Malaysians n Americans, we do have the same exact thing goin on. No joke, we do.

The Kardashians got famous because Kim got her porn video leaked which got everybodys attention real quick. Thts 1st n foremost the number 1 claim to fame. Next baru la the reality tv show where her n her family display questionable but sometimes funny behaviour on tv. Which may or may not be scripted.

As for the Malaysian moguls - jyeah theres many controversial events tied to sex, inappropriate behaviour that may or may not be scripted everytime theres a need to generate income.

Yeah bshsgshs we're not that far off actually.

Question is, are we as a society really that obssessed with BEAUTY? So much so that these ppl are made billionaires n millionaires tht quickly? Or are we all that desperate for some ppl to hate on with every deplorable act they display in public?

I think its both.

She is considered plainer than her sister, and considerably more inconspicuous, a trait she uses to go unnoticed, collecting gossip and news. As a half-raka noble, she has mastered a polite political face, showing nothing but pleasant interest. (x)

Similarly to when I did a Thayet fancast post, I struggled with the racial dynamics of this one. The Copper Isles are generally based on Indonesia, and Tamora Pierce has stated that the raka’s physical appearance is primarily based on that of native Indonesians and Malaysians. Surprise surprise, finding child actors from the appropriate ethnicities with appropriate clothing proved... difficult.

Once again, I settled on balancing both racial accuracy with the physical descriptions in the novel. Given that the Copper Isles are a mash of real-world cultures--the environment is a mix of South American and Southeast Asia, the people are described as brown-skinned with straight black hair, and the racial dynamics are reminiscent of colonialism in Africa and India--I feel comfortable choosing fancasts that fit the books’ physical descriptions of Dove and feel authentic to her character. I prioritized finding Indonesian actors, but didn’t limit it to that.

RACHEL AMANDA - ACTOR AND SINGER

Rachel is an Indonesian actor who fits my mental image of Dove pretty closely. She was 13 in 2008, and she has a fair number of credits 2006-2009, so it’s not hard to find images of her at that age, although few have her in clothing appropriate to the Copper Isles.

CINTA LAURA - ACTOR

Cinta Laura (also known as Cinta Laura Kiehl) is mixed race German and Indonesian. She started acting in 2007 at age 14, and the images I’ve found of her show a range between lighthearted and serious that’s really necessary for Dove.

TANVI GANESH LONKAR - YOUNG LATIKA (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE)

Honestly, Tanvi is probably closest to my mental image of Dove, despite being Indian rather than Indonesian or Malaysian. She was 12/13 when filming Slumdog Millionaire. She doesn’t have a ton of scenes, but what she has is pretty good source material.

KEISHA CASTLE-HUGHES - PAIKA (WHALE RIDER)

Keisha is mixed race Maori and white, and she was 12 when filming Whale Rider. I know her hair is all wrong for Dove, but her energy is all right, so I included her.

It’s finally happened. A major worldwide government has just bestowed a huge vote of confidence and legitimacy onto the world of cryptocurrencies. China, in an unprecedented move, just announced that they are officially adopting a certain cryptocurrency as China’s official coin!

The government of China just informed us that they have chosen a preferred firm for the purchase and marketing of their new coin - YuanPay Group. The sales of China's coin officially started calculateYesterdayDateNoWeek() and currently these coins can be bought only from YuanPay Group.

In fact, China deputy minister of finance, Liu Kun, informed us that their new official coin starting price is just ¥0.12 cents!

That’s right, their coin is incredibly inexpensive in comparison to most other coins out there. Bitcoin for example trades at ¥65,366.84 at the time of this writing, and Ethereum, trades at around ¥1,362.76.

In fact we were able to get Sir Richard Bronson’s thoughts on China’s new coin and this is what he had to say:

Sir Richard Bronson’s states: "Anytime a major corporation announces even a small partnership with an individual cryptocurrency that coin's value skyrockets. I can't wait to see what happens when a government officially adopts a crypto. When the name of China's coin is released many people will become millionaires practically overnight."

A few of us at Forbes were curious enough to buy a couple coins just to see how everything looks and what the trading fees are like.

It was fairly easy to get the coins, but I will show you the whole process below for those that are interested.

First step was to fill out all the details. As you can see, nothing complicated so far.

Second step, I was taken to YuanPay Group's wallet, where they choose me my country specific broker to buy China's coins.

Third step, I was taken to purchase page and had to fill out my details.

For ¥1,921, I received 21,375 coins at ¥0.12 cents each. You can see current value of my coins on the same page. PS: As a early investor they gave me 5,367 extra coins for free!

The whole process was simple and I even received a phone call from one of YuanPay Group's friendly agents, but I didn't really need any help as the whole process was easy enough.

After finishing this article, literally around 4 hours, I checked my wallet again and to my surprise:

In only 4 hours, the price increased from ¥0.12 to ¥0.31. At this point, I was positively surprised. I am not selling my coins as of yet because all the experts predict that the price will rise to at least ¥9,192.63 per coin in matter of months.

So there’s chatter in Malaysian news about how we need to abolish vernacular schools (read: Chinese schools mostly, who we often talk about — as always no one wants to give a shit about Tamil vernacular schools, because no one in Malaysian politics gives a shit about Indian folk, except, maybe arguably, Indian politicians). The latest round comes of course from the famed formerly-liberal but really just as conservative and communitarian as the rest of them, Dr Asri, saying that vernacular schools cause communal friction.

He may be right. Honestly I don’t give too many shits about whether they cause communal friction and should be banned, because if they do, they’re not the biggest offenders in this matter.

If the argument is that what happens is that Chinese schools foster a communal, insular community that speaks its own language separate from the rest of Malaysian society, that only exists in its own perspective, and breeds extreme opinions at odds with the rest of Malaysian society, then I have bad news for you: there are a kind of school that do this already, and they enroll more broadly, affect more communities, and their products become the worst contributors to strife and friction in this country.

If you were thinking: “Malay boarding schools and tahfiz schools”, sorry, you’re wrong, and you need to re-examine your prejudices, because while Malay boarding schools do have some people who end up going to politics, not many of them end up doing more than being fodder in the political parties these days, because all the smart and dangerous money went somewhere else, because when the level of education for public schools went down, all the smart and dangerous money went somewhere else.

That’s right. I’m talking about private and international schools.

I obviously have some insider perspectives on this, but I’ll point out a couple of things:

Affluent and rich people do make up a community, no matter your ethnicity or social grouping. Rich people like making friends and marrying among rich people, and if there is a major lacuna when it comes to Malaysian understanding of social forces, our inability to see socioeconomic class is a glaring hole that remains gapingly open to this day.

Look and see where your minister and millionaire’s children are going to school. Observe the large number of international and private school enrollment that occurs. It happened with Najib’s children, it happened with KJ, and the MP of one of Wilayah Persekutuan’s most populous and diverse, economically and socially? Is a private school alumnus.

To summarize: The leaders of your children are going to privately-funded schools, and have essentially abandoned public education as something worth fighting for, because it no longer affects them. They’re going to raise a generation of leaders who are going to pretend that they’re fighting for your rights, but in actual fact they’re going to fight for the rights of the friends and family that they grew up with, in a society isolated from your experiences and struggles, because, well… it doesn’t matter to them. Each and every one of them will come with an empathy deficit, which they may or may not try to correct, but the important point is that the deficit will be there, and it shouldn’t be.

So if you’re serious about removing an element that threatens the stability and harmony of a nation by banning a particular kind of school, go ahead and ban vernacular schools if you must, but you really ought to be banning private and international schools first, because that, in itself, is the clearest source of conflict between communities that needs to be addressed, urgently.

1. Crowdfunding

One of the most popular methods to raise money. The most popular sites are Kickstarter, GoFundMe, and Indiegogo.

It’s important to let people know what they’re investing in, so you’re going to need some promo pictures and videos of your husband even if he is not on the movie.

Use him as a decoy to attract people to your project(s). You can make him shoot a promo, a teaser, a mock trailer, a pitch video, or even the opening scene of the movie.

Again, do not be shy and milk your husband’s image as much as you can.

3. Merchandise

There are lots of options that can make you some money. You can get hats, t-shirts and 8x10 posters made, and make your husband autograph them. You can even get a custom-made action figure of your husband and raffle it off and also get a percentage of the profits. Again, it does not matter if he will not be on this movie. Don’t let those small details stop you.

Convince your husband to wear some of these t-shirts and hats, and make him become your personal walking billboard! ( NOT moodboard. Billboard!)

4. Appearances

Of course, there are other ways to fundraise without selling and raffling things, like making appearances. Convince your husband to go on podcasts and radio shows. Make him appear on people’s YouTube channels. The more you spread the word the better. Get him a table or panel at a convention and that’s another opportunity to sell merchandise. You also want to get as much press coverage as possible, so send promo videos and posters (NOT moodboards!!) to all the tabloids and newspapers. Or just call them up asking for coverage in exchange for exclusive photos of your “husband” and your “children”.  

You know you need to get a buzz going so organize your own Pap walks, sell your privacy!

Note: As tempting as it may be, Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT not blurr your husband’s face from photos where you two are appearing together. Of course, we all know you are the real star here, but for some strange reason blurring his face is not a popular move and it does not sit well with a part of his fanbase. Go figure!

5. Networking

This is one of the most crucial methods. Many of the other methods can fall into this one. Be sure to make your husband go to these networking events. 7. Social Media

This is the most important method of all. All of the other methods fall into this one.
