Because most medicines were produced from [...] plants [...] these early “pharmaceutical monopolies” required full control of the production and trade of a species. Russia successfully managed the rhubarb trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while Spain controlled the distribution [...] from Spanish America, mainly cinchona from Peru, in the same period. “True” cinnamon grew only on Sri Lanka, so whoever controlled the island could dominate the cinnamon trade. The Portuguese were the first to create a monopoly on the cinnamon trade there in the early seventeenth century. That monopoly was later optimized by the Dutch in the late eighteenth century [...].
“True” should indeed be in quotation marks here - the term reflects the historically contingent tastes of Europeans, rather than any botanical category [...]. The rarity of cinnamon in the early modern period made it one of the most coveted spices of that era, and European countries without direct access to the cinnamon trade tried to imitate, substitute, steal, smuggle, or transplant the “true” product from Sri Lanka. [...]
---
In the early modern period, cinnamon was also important both as an exotic commodity and as an important therapeutic substance. The Dutch East India Company (VOC), which controlled Sri Lanka between 1658 and 1796, was well aware of this. The VOC vigorously exploited the Salagama - [...] specialized Sri Lankan cinnamon peelers - to supply enough cinnamon, which for a long time was gathered from forests. Only after the peelers rebelled, leading to a war that lasted between 1760 and 1766, did the company revise its production policy.
Experiments with “cinnamon gardens” (kaneeltuinen in Dutch) led to enormous successes, and the company eventually grew millions of cinnamon trees on plantations in the final decades of the eighteenth century. Meanwhile, competitors of the Dutch had come up with their own solutions [...]: Spain had started growing other Cinnamomum species on plantations in the Philippines, while France and Britain succeeded in transplanting cinnamon to islands in the Caribbean. But the Dutch monopoly was not simply threatened by outside competition. Smuggling, by peelers or VOC personnel, was strictly forbidden and severely punished. [...]
---
Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Drakenstein (1636–1691) was the VOC administrator on India’s Malabar Coast when he started experimenting with cinnamon oil in the 1670s.
He concluded that the oil, which he extracted from the roots of local cinnamon trees, was of better quality than oil from cinnamon trees on Sri Lanka. Van Rheede reported these results in his entry on cinnamon in volume 1 of the Hortus Indicus Malabaricus, the twelve-volume book that was produced by a team of local and European scholars, and supervised by Van Rheede himself.
Van Rheede’s assessment of cinnamon - in fact, the very publication of a multi-volume work about the flora of Malabar - infuriated the governor of Sri Lanka, Rijckloff van Goens, who had secured the cinnamon monopoly of Sri Lanka for the Dutch. Van Goens insisted that Van Rheede stop his medical experiments, claiming that the monopoly was at risk if the cinnamon trade was extended beyond the island of Sri Lanka.
But Van Goens was not so much concerned about the therapeutic efficacy of cinnamon from either of the two regions. He was motivated by an imperial agenda and regarded the natural products of Sri Lanka as superior to anything similar in the region.
The experiments of Van Rheede, who was his former protégé, threatened not so much the botanical quality of the product, or the commercial interests of the Dutch East India Company, but rather the central position of Sri Lanka in the Dutch colonial system and the position of Van Goens as the representative of that system.
---
Even when Sri Lanka still only produced cinnamon that grew in the wild, the Dutch harvested enough to supply an international market and were able to dictate the availability and price level throughout the world. The monopoly, whether defined in commercial or pharmaceutical terms, was not easily put at risk by efforts like Van Rheede’s. Those involved in the early modern cinnamon trade were motivated by various reasons to defend or undermine the central position of Sri Lankan cinnamon: botanical, medical, commercial, or imperial. These motives often overlapped.

For Kaa Day
“Girls, girls, one at a time, if you please,” Kaa said with a laugh, his employees surrounding him as the python relaxed upon his large bed.
His bedroom, as grand and big as it was, was unable to fit every employee of Kaa’s brothel. Many had to stay outside in the hallway, spending their time by talking or… other intimate means.
Those inside the room were busy peppering their pimp with kisses and loving words, along with massages and pets to any part of the snake’s long, powerful body they could reach.
Sundar was right in the thick of it, sitting atop Kaa’s middle and showering her beloved Master with touches and praise.
“We just want you to be happy on this special day,” the Malabar squirrel said with a smile, the other ladies nodding along. She accentuated this by pressing a tender kiss to Kaa’s snout, causing the python to chuckle knowingly with a shiver.
“I appreccciate this, my love,” Kaa replied, giving her chin a loving stroke. “Truly! But how on earth will I ever accommodate all of your kindness all at once?”
This was a rhetorical question. Kaa knew exactly how, but he adored having his girls squirm and wonder in anticipation.
Sundar especially.
The squirrel was there for him from the very beginning of this grand venture of debauchery, and he made sure to let her know his feelings for her at every possible moment.
“Oh!” Kaa said in exaggeration, pausing before giving Sundar a knowing, sensual stare, “I know…”
In the middle of the brothel’s grand foyer, a large, intimidating statue of Kaa stood. It was a commissioned gift from every one of his girls, and it was able to do something special indeed.
The statue’s eyes began to glow, and the building became dark as every single light within it dimmed and replaced with psychedelic mood lighting. The entire brothel was now a club.
The girls ooo’d and ahh’d in excitement and curiosity, and Kaa’s coils started to play with every one in his room.
Kaa shivered in delight, feeling Sundar grind against him.
“Let’ssssssss sssssstart thisssss party…”

After 43 total seasons and a nearly 1,000 (!) combined episodes, does the NCIS franchise have anything new to offer…?
Created by an Australian (actor-turned-writer/producer Morgan O’Neill)… (originally just) for Australians… and starring/guest-starring maaany Australians, NCIS: Sydney (premiering Tuesday, Nov. 14 on CBS) suggests that a trip to the land Down Under shakes things up enough to warrant another offshoot.
The premise for NCIS: Sydney, as established in the first episode (I’ve seen the first four of eight): “As international tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific,” U.S. NCIS Agents and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are grafted into a “multi-national task force, to keep naval crimes in check in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet.”
Olivia Swann (Legends of Tomorrow) and Todd Lasance (Spartacus: War of the Damned) lead the cast as, respectively, NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey and her 2IC AFP counterpart, Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey. Rounding out the merged team are Sean Sagar (Fate: The Winx Saga) as NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson, Tuuli Narkle (Bad Behaviour) as AFP liaison officer Constable Evie Cooper, Mavournee Hazel (Neighbours) as AFP forensic scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson, and William McInnes (Blue Heelers) as AFP forensic pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose.
Of the above actors, all are Australian save for Swann (who is English) and Sagar (American).
Now, you don’t need me to tell you that the Sydney backdrop in and of itself makes TV’s fifth NCIS series look special, if not oftentimes downright picturesque, shooting on location as it does at Sydney Harbor (including at the HMAS Kuttabul naval base), Bondi Beach, the Malabar Ocean Pool, Kings Cross and the like. Most everywhere the camera faces, this gives the procedural a vibe like no NCIS before it. (But if pressed to draw a comparison, I’d say it most evokes NCIS: New Orleans, between the team’s makeshift HQ and the setting’s highly specific local flavor.)
The cases similarly make the most of the NCIS franchise’s first international setting, with “murder by exotic snake” and an apparent shark attack figuring into two of the kills.
NCIS: Sydney also, of course, sounds different. And while I luhrve me the Aussie accent, you will probably want to watch with closed-captioning on, since at least one of the series regulars and the occasional guest star can be a bit indecipherable at times.
But as different as NCIS: Sydney may look and sound, the character types will be (a bit too?) familiar to franchise aficionados.
You have, in Swann’s Mackey, the veddy serious team leader with a limited tolerance for hijinks. There is also, of course, the quirky! forensic scientist, the M.E. who’s a font of wisdom, and the early hints of Will They/Won’t They between two team members.
On the flip side, the “forcibly merged team” aspect is new for the long-running franchise, and tees up entertaining instances of culture clash. (Australia has very different rules about LEOs and open carry firearms, for example. They play, “Scissors, Paper, Rock.” Oh, and car steering wheels are on the other side! Wild.) There’s also a recurring adversary that offers an interesting wrinkle, given who he works for….
Of the cast, Swann makes for a solid (and tall) team leader, though it takes at least one episode too many to shine any light on the past trauma that defines Mackey/has her “shields” up, while Lasance has great fun with Dempsey’s comparatively laid-back persona. Narkle, I want to say, is the big standout as Evie — winningly sassy and arguably the “most Australian” of the bunch — while Sagar was a runner-up until his character started acting a little too free-spirited in later episodes. Hazel is hampered early on by Blue’s characterization (though that starts to improve), and I look forward to learning more about McInnes’ M.E.
All told, I was digging the very first episodes (and getting a crash course on Aussie lingo), and I might have gone “B+” if Episode 4 didn’t land very flat for me. So, a “B” it is, for now.
NCIS: Sydney premieres Stateside on CBS on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 8/7c, and will also be available live and on demand that night for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers. (Paramount+ Essential subscribers can stream each episode the day after it airs.) The series globally premieres on Paramount+ Australia on Friday, Nov. 10, with additional Paramount+ international markets to be announced at a later date.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: If you’ve never pulled the trigger on an actual (long) trip to Australia, it’s a g‘day to be an NCIS fan, with the arrival of NCIS: Sydney

A Good day starts with Good FOOD!
Right, isn't it? People start their day with their morning breakfast, there arises the topic of whether the day is fine or not. Nobody wants their day without food, as we people are rushing our day only for this. Food is the only thing that every living creature lives in this world wants. It is the only thing that has no discrimination on gender, birth, age, place, rich or poor, upper/lower class, Good/bad, and what else, there is no sincere love than the love towards food. But there will be a special love for regional foods as well. Being an Indian, probably, most of the people even outside India will have the desire to taste South Indian Foods as it has the versatility of its style.
Let's take a look at South Indian Foods
The food varieties with a special culinary style of tradition, special rituals, the culture of serving, exclusive history for various dishes, healthy ingredients, and much more. South Indian foods hold the top position in this. These foods are a combination of Andhra style, Malabar style, Chettinad style, and Kannada style recipes. Most traditional of these are Kali, Keppai, Ditch millet, and Ragi tiffin etc., These are the common foods usually preferred by Indian people during the 60s and 70s. Even today, these are the main foods in some of the regions like rural villages, tribal areas, and hilly areas.
Little Bite on Health Concern
In Today's lifestyle, it is hard to believe that people live for more than 70 years. But our great-grandparents and grandparents would have lived for so many years like 80 to 90 years… Right? How come they could be so? Only Because of these healthy South Indian foods. They lived true to the words "Food is the greatest medicine ever". This is one of the best examples to prove that food varieties made in South Indian style are among the world's healthiest and tastiest as well.
Food TODAY!
Since the 1980s, people from different countries wishes to explore new varieties of different origins and different cultures. Nowadays, it is common in India that people wanted to try new styles of recipes and unique styles of preparation. For example, Let's take a popular dish 'Biryani', as it has various styles of preparation like Andhra style biryani, Malabar biryani, Hyderabadi biryani, Dum biryani, Awadhi biryani, Ambur biryani, Thalassery biryani, Beary biryani, etc. Even Rice choices also there for Biryani preparation such as basmati, Seeraga samba, Jeerakasala/Kaima, and so on. Visit our website www.pasiout.com to explore more varieties.
So, Every person will have their own choice and love for their favorite style of preparation. Even, vegetarian people also wanted to try new recipes in South Indian foods. Different restaurants like multicuisine, Chettinad, and pure veg have their menu in Vegetarian as equal to Non-vegetarian dishes. Thus, we could say that the mindset of people keeps on engaging in new recipes.

The Absent Figure and The Intimate Present
Special Report published in Anthology of Exhibitions, ARTIndia magazine, Volume XXI Issue II, May 2017, 35
A dual display curated by Girish Shahane hinged on two phrases from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, was hosted by Gallery OED, Fort Kochi, recently. Country Matters, mounted at the Beyond Malabar gallery, from the 9th of December to the 10th of January, reflected contradictory attitudes towards sexuality in a strange yet astute manner. ‘‘Country matters’ is a play on the expression for female genitals. The show had five artists including Mithu Sen, T. Venkanna and Meenakshi Sengupta investigating the voyeur’s gaze, as well as the male gaze.
Send Some Candids by Fabien Charuau used downloaded porn photographs with defaced women, printed on A5 size paper, and hung with sexually suggestive comments found on the Internet. In contrast to Charuau’s deft imagery was Meenakshi Sengupta’s Spices that employed spices as pigments to make stark line drawings of nude women in pornographic poses with text that traversed between niches in the gallery.
Mithu Sen’s part skeleton, part spindly-legged male figures were uncompromising and filled with levity. T. Venkanna’s representation of male and female figures in an installation made of 34 images stuck together probably commented on the display of sexual imagery in public places. Dibin Thilakan’s sole painting worked within an art historical framework and was reminiscent of Aegean paintings, with its composition of ethereal rhythmic figures. This show dwelled on the contentious yet subtle undercurrents of our hypertrophic digital age, and probed the generation and use of slang in the media and everyday life.
Abstract Chronicles that featured works by six artists, from the 10th of December to the 24th of January at Gallery OED, highlighted the excesses of everyday imagery by transmuting them into abstract images. At the entrance, a glimpse of Parul Gupta’s work made you want to re- check whether the vertical lines were still or moving. The canvas with vertical lines, through subtle shifts, provided the viewer with a three-dimensional spatial experience. In an uncanny way the canvas of Sediments by Vibha Galhotra seemed to erupt with a sudden flash of black strokes. By contrast, Tanya Goel’s minimal monochromes Notations (Angle 50 Degrees), were surfaces that blended the excessive material diligently, and deceived the viewer with its imitation of the flickering screen with pixels. Everything is made available to us at one click in this virtual world. Fabien Charuau’s intensely coloured A Thousand Kisses Deep used prolific digital imagery that were processed through an algorithm that could express the energy of pixels in each image. These images were abstract representations of intimate moments like a couple kissing or a crowd praying. Charuau’s algorithms could well have cocked a snook at Georges Seurat in his time! Manish Nai’s print with hazy numerical draping carried layered billboard advertisements that questioned the painted surface and photographic imagery.

The Athirappilly-Vazhachal road is a quick drive from Kochi that allows you to get away from the constant activity of the city and take in Kerala's pure beauty. You can begin this amazing journey on two wheels with ease thanks to Kochi bike rental.
Embracing the Journey: From Kochi to Athirappilly
You will travel a lovely path surrounded by vegetation and rustic charm, beginning in Kochi. The route winds past charming towns as you exit the city, alternating with tiny tea shops and swaying coconut trees. Particularly during the monsoon season, the air gets crisper and cooler, providing a nice background for riding. The whole route is about 70 kilometers long and offers a relaxing but daring ride that is ideal for a day's journey.
There is more to this biking trip than just the final goal; each section of the road that leads to Athirappilly has something special to offer. The sound of nature surrounding you, combined with the constant hum of your bike on the open road, creates a mystical experience. If you choose bike rental in Kochi your journey will be enjoyable.
Arrival at Athirappilly: Kerala’s Majestic Waterfall
The distant thunderclap of the falls will begin to be heard as you get closer to Athirappilly, one of Kerala's most famous natural landmarks. Known as the "Niagara of India," the 80-foot-tall Athirappilly Waterfall is surrounded by tall trees and thick greenery. Park your bike for a bit and enjoy the surroundings. After the ride, the cold mist created by the waterfall's spray provides a pleasant distraction.
The falls are surrounded by a number of viewpoints, and a quick stroll will allow you to see the water crashing into the Chalakudy River below up close. The force of the waterfall is only increased during the monsoon season, turning it into a thundering display. The area's appeal is enhanced if you're lucky enough to see any of the native fauna, such as hornbills or the Malabar Giant Squirrel.
Exploring Further: From Athirappilly to Vazhachal
The peaceful Vazhachal Falls is a short distance from Athirappilly. Vazhachal is renowned for its calm, flowing flow over huge rock formations, in contrast to Athirappilly's amazing decrease. Traveling through thick forests and roads while surrounded by nature makes the journey between Athirappilly and Vazhachal captivating. For both nature supporters and photographers, the green environment is ideal because it suggests a scene from a tropical rainforest.
There is a calm, almost mystical ambiance to the drive between these two waterfalls. There will be gorgeous beauty all around you, and occasionally you will hear birds singing from the trees. It's the ideal spot to stop, enjoy the fresh air, and listen to the soothing sounds of running water.
