San tai yon ekkusu jugatsu (Boiling Point, 1990)
"Cut your finger off."
"Why do I have to do it?"
"You shagged my girl."
"You told me to!"
"Don't do that even if I tell you to! Cut it off, now!"

Kitano is fully in control‚ allowing for long static shots and disturbing stillness throughout much of the film‚#punctuated by flashes of bloody violence and unpredictable bleakness. as an actor he remains offscreen until almost exactly the#half way point‚ but when he appears (grotesque‚ drunken‚ an abusive and dangerous bully and yet somehow compelling and very nearly likable)#he changes everything and alters the whole direction of the action. it's an incredible performance in a film full of them‚ and afascinating#character (moreso for the perverse double act he has with his friend‚ handler‚ possible love interest‚ whipping boy Nito)

Sono otoko, kyôbô ni tsuki (Violent Cop, 1989)
"I can't say I'm against it, were it not my job. But behave yourself for a year while I'm Chief, won't you? I'm no fool. I know the sort around here, and the kind of police we need. You must be smart, that's all."

This film was set to be made by the great Kinji Fukasaku starring Kitano but the latter's#Tight schedule as one of japan's most successful light entertainers caused Fukasaku to pull out. So Kitano directed in and in the process#Rewrote a script for a comedy cop film into something profoundly bleak and nihilistic but made with such confidence and self assuredness...#It's almost frightening. He holds shots for an unnerving amount of time content to hold the camera still on unmoving actors in utter#Silence or to allow stance or body language to say everything. There's an amazing moment towards the end where Kitano stands unmoving in a#Doorway before walking into a shootout and you can see him almost imperceptibly gathering his courage and weighing up his decisions all#Unsaid. His first film. I can't get over it. Stripped down pared back and unafraid to do quietly and slowly what many other films would do#In an explosion of sight and sound. A deeply ugly film about ugly people doing ugly things but also very affecting and incredibly well#Crafted. Would that every first film was as accomplished and as polished as this. Mesmerising
