Fr though one of my favorite things about CGKU (cis girl Kendall universe) is how just changing that one thing shifts so many roles and dynamics so drastically. Like, if Shiv was already in the company and gunning for CEO long before the start of the show, what would Tomshiv be like if she even was still with Tom? And might she still want to keep her options open with other pursuits on the side like politics or would she be too deep in that black hole?
#her taking up canon kendall's power struggle is just so delicious to me#boy shiv is fine but i really like this way better#also maybe i oughta make a tag for this specific au#cgku#succ gender fun#shiv roy#kendall roy#succession

but genuinely anyone who knows me can attest to How Serious i can get about the source material of things im hyperfixated on i'm talking dissertation levels of research and essaying and character analyses and theorising like i'm getting paid or awarded for it. never have i been hyperfixated on something that i wouldnt want to write 20+ pages about if asked until succession 😭 the only aspect of this show that comes close to making me coocoo bananas in the way i have been over media in the past is kendall but even then im like Mmmm i like the way that sad man walk :3 but like i said the more severe feelings are for sure there and sometimes it's so overwhelming i dont know what to do with them but for the first time in my life i am not diving deeper into it im just leaving it at that <3 no more intellectualising my feelings ❌ only just feeling them intensely and saying 'oh my poor little meow meows' in the process
as far as my hyperfixations go succession is the only one ever whose themes/meanings i dont take exceptionally seriously despite having such visceral reactions to the characters. probably because those visceral reactions are always one of either Horny or Incredulous and on the rare occasion , both
#Im experiencing ego death of sorts it may seem#mayb this is why i get so much whiplash looking through the succ tags bc my attachment to the show is so unserious but it's not but it is#<------ girl who literally stayed up til the AM making a sad kendall roy playlist last night while shedding tears#like tomgreg is just funny to me i cant fathom taking them so seriously so as to vehemently hate them or kys if they dont get a happy endin#and having any particular inclination or disinclination toward greg like hes just some guy and hes part of what makes the show funny for me#and i genuinely dgaf about logan at alllll to me hes just some peripheral chara who informs my interest in the kids n their relationships#but it's nice to just sit back and see what everyone else is saying#though i desperately need to find a circle of ppl who enjoy the show the way i do bc some takes still piss me awffff#talks#succession

what program do you use for your edits? primarily davinci resolve, which is my personal recommendation due to being free and relatively intuitive to use. occasionally vegas pro or capcut if i want to get silly with it
what website did you use to make that emoji succession theme cover? thirtydollar.website, which i don't recommend using unless you are willing to waste a lot of time and effort on a joke. it's designed to be funny and as such is not particularly user-friendly
why do you use she/her pronouns for tom? why don't you
how is tomshiv yuri? both girls
you used to be tomwambsgirl? yeah, i got nuked
so you don't like tomgreg anymore? at this point i have way too many negative associations with the ship/fan content/fandom behavior (long and uninteresting story), so no, not really

Like do those succession girlies know that richard siken shipped wincest.
Also man like one of the most annoying shit abt succession is ppl were complaining about succession incest like girl where??? Random ppl kept mentioning incest shippers just to hate on it but like I wasn't even thinking or caring abt it. Like *they* were the ones making me think about succession incest. Not some random shipper - which for the most part, stayed in their own lane?
Like they were inventing that shit to be worried about.
also sorry to those succ incest ship fans that those fandom BNFs blocked you out of their fandom themed events. They coulda just blacklisted the tags or blocked you.

your tags on this make me feel so seen. for me it's the fact that on a show with so many complex and interesting characters a large part of the tumblr succession fandom has chosen to put all their focus on these two lame white guys and the nonexistent "romantic" subtext between them. like okay tom can be interesting at times but greg is just the worst and has always been my least favorite succ character and the increased screen time given to him over the seasons is a direct assault on me.
right i just genuinely find them soooo boring and i don't understand why anyone focuses entirely on that. like i saw people making tomgreg posts about the latest episode like how are you watching the episode that the whole show has been leading up to and coming away with thoughts of those two 😭
i think people seem unwilling to actually understand what toms motives are towards greg and none of them are remotely romantic lol like i feel like tom feels emasculated and unpowerful and to cope with that he wants to dominate and humiliate greg and often he does that in a borderline sexual way because he, and rhe business world, are misogynistic. sorry this could be explained sooo much better but im super tired and foggy
anyway. glad im not the only one sick of tomgreg

defining how good/succes someone's music is based off chart is so lame and i'll never shut up about it lol. and to put things into perspective, the 1975's happiness got 6M streams on spotify and its been out for almost a month. arctic monkey's new single also got 6M streams for almost a week. and both of them have waaaay bigger monthly listeners than louis so yeah louis is actually doing more than fine. like, dont talk abt chart when that awful dance monkey song charted everywhere for ages pls 😭😭
EXACTLYYYY 😭 ALL TAGS left under this ask are A BIG BIG YES. Its a turn off for me in any music conversation when someone start bringing up charts and number and measuring success, like no offence but do you even listen to music? Do you even diversify your genres? do you even go discover artists and songs or do have to wait for malls and mainstream media to implant a sound in your ears, and like, nothing wrong about that, you do you. And like @sweetest-devotion put it perfect in her tags here, sustainable authentic impact can be the conceptualizing of success for some artists (Louis as a perfect example) and this concept can sometimes not align with a metric system like charts, streams etc etc etc. Like you go listen to whatever music makes you happy, good for you but personally I think that at least you shouldn't hold standards just because numbers deflect the definition of what a successful music career is.

3. favorite rarepair
Interesting one! I don't know that I have one of those? I enjoy willashiv posting but other than that I'm not sure... not really a rarepair at all but on tumblr it could be considered that: I actually really enjoy Kendall/Naomi.. I think they have a really interesting thing going on and I LOVE the self-recognition through the other thing happening w them and the way she's very clearly a narrative mirror and kind of the implications of that .. also i love that she genuinely really cares about him. plus i just like their scenes together! maybe doesn't answer the question at all but...
7. season 4 predictions? (/is it futile to even guess?)
this is interesting obviously bc we know some stuff from what people have gathered from the shooting. but okay some of my thoughts:
stewy is gonna be approached by the siblings and I think (hope) there's gonna be a double-agent kind of situation going on where he acts as their informant from the inside while obv still acting as if on Logan's side (as he really doesn't have a choice abt the latter part). maybe that's just wishful thinking, though
i've been THINKING about whose queer friend that we know has been cast is gonna come to Willa & Connor's wedding. My bet is, for some reason, on Willa or Kendall. Idk. This is based on nothing but vibes, either way can't wait for that to come up
I have some more spoiler-y thoughts that I think are pretty plausible based on what we've seen (and i think most ppl know about but anyway) and I don't wanna put here in case someone doesn't wanna know.. idk! honestly never know what jesse armstrong could even possibly come up with
12. favorite succ fanfiction/fanart/fanvid/uquiz?
this one's really hard to answer because no way can i just pick one, i'll just give you a collection. everything in my #art tag is so fucking cool. this shiv drunk walk home edit fucks really hard. the editing on this tame impala succ edit is so good, and it's pretty underrated imo. HAVE to mention cousin greg babooshka edit that changed my life in that it made me start watching the show a year ago. Lorde kenstewy edit my beloved <3 Succession relay edit, edit of ALL TIME. this tomshiv failmarriage edit means. so much to me. ken ideal husband edit <3 no he would not make the ideal husband, no i don't care <3 also this tomshiv marina edit !!! very good! THEE super rich kids roy siblings edit of all time. OHH Also good time to mention one of my youtube faves, the shiv everything I wanted edit. so good!! this one is incredibly, truly incredible as well. lastly of course THEE last kenstewmas edit.
#honestly could make a whole ass post just with my favorite youtube succ edits but also for good stuff just look thru my#vid#tag!#a lot of amazing edits. there are truly. so many talented ppl in this fandom#ask#anonymous#ask game

hey, i haven't really gotten into succession properly but i knew you from your main blog and i wanted to follow because i like hannibal. i'm kinda curious if you made this sideblog for those shows together because you've seen the fandom overlap is big or just for convenience? i'm asking because succession has been popping up on my dash out of nowhere and i'm wondering if it's the hannibal blogs getting into it or tumblr in general
The short version of this answer is that there definitely is a lot of overlap between succession fans and Hannibal fans. Lots of tumblr users that don’t watch Hannibal have definitely also gotten into succ, but I think Hannibal fans in particular have been drawn into it by all the unhinged hannigram/tomgreg comparison posts that get made. (That’s honestly a big part of why I started watching succession myself lol). I know there’s a lot of jokes posts about the “x show to y show pipeline,” but I honestly feel like the Hannibal to succession fan pipeline has kinda become a thing lol.
So I’d say it’s tumblr in general getting into succession somewhat, but Hannibal fans going for it at a much higher rate.
The long/pointless version of this answer (aka the me-specific version) is that I made this blog a combo blog because I have too many goddamn sideblogs lmao. Including my main, this is the sixth blog that I have made with this account.
I got the itch to make a sideblog when I started coming up with a bunch of succession post ideas, especially the kind of analytical stuff I usually do for my vnc page. But! I felt like, given I’d made my vnc account less that a year ago for pretty much the same reason, I was in danger of starting to make a new sideblog every time I get a new hyperfixation, which is patently ridiculous. I am aware that not everything I want to post about needs its own separate page. However, I also really wanted a better way to keep track of all my succession posts, because grassycheesecake (the blog, not me) is a lawless wasteland where posts are easily lost to tumblr’s awful search and my forgetting to use my original post tag when I’m eyebrow deep in fandom brainrot.
So in other words, I really wanted to make a succession blog, but felt like I couldn’t justify making a blog for something that could easily turn out to be a temporary fixation. The only way I could let myself make this blog was if it was a combo between succession and something else I’ve been into for longer. I figured that way, even if I did end up losing interest in succ between seasons, I’d have something else to post about and fill the gaps, so the blog wouldn’t be pointless.
The only fandoms I ever really make posts about that I didn’t already have a sideblog for were tma, homestuck, and Hannibal, and since I knew Hannibal and Succession have a big fan overlap, I figured that combo made the most sense. Like I said, I first encountered succession because a couple Hannibal blogs I follow started posting about it, and I started watching it because my dash was flooded with posts comparing the tomgreg nero/sporus scene to the hannigram Achilles/Patroclus scene, so the shows are kind of associated in my head. (Honestly the best way to get me to watch smth is by showing me a clip from it that seems like utter madness out of context. That’s happened to me with the Hannibal cheek bite scene and the succession Nero/sporus scene lmao).
Also wambsgraham is a fucking killer url, and as soon as I saw it was open, I knew I had to commit to this combo so I could keep using it <3
Tldr: I made this sideblog a combo bc I am an insane person that spends way too much time worrying over decisions that nobody else gives a shit about. And also because of both fandom overlap and convenience.
Ps. I’m now having a dark vision of an alternate timeline where I chose to make a succession/homestuck combo blog and instantly ascended to the rank of “most insufferable person on tumblr.com”
#I’m not even that into homestuck these days#but I have to admit. I am still haunted by my secret obsession with the classpect system#lmao anyway sorry this answer was so long and convoluted lol#I’m breaking hiatus to answer this ask entirely because I’m physically incapable of turning down an opportunity to talk about myself#and I am also very long winded <3#ask#anon#abt andie

Jealousy or Overwhelmed: Do You Really Have to Get Irritated?
How do you react over someone succes? No matter big or small the matter is, are you tagging along with how happy the person is or the otherwise? There are a lot of reactions when we see someone in our life succeding, we could be happy, motivated, or maybe jealous. We could not expect everyone in our life to be in favor of what we have achieve so far but let’s not be that person, we might not be directly affected by someone succes but being happy over someone achievement surely bring positive vibes not only for them but also to ourselves. They are going to be happy knowing that there are people around them who were supportive for them and it reassure us that we’re in the right circle of connection.
I’m not gonna lie, eventhough I’m happy with my relatives success there are times that makes me feel like nothing. I don’t think It’s jealousy but it makes me think “how far have i become as a person?”, the kind of thoughts and feeling that if you keep it on your mind you’ll feel nothing, it’s the kind of feeling that belittle you and it feels just wrong but you couldn’t just deny that it’s inside you. But then you realize, not everyone live with the same value and obviously lives their life differently. Maybe you get overwhelmed with your relatives’s achievement but was it really something that you as well trying to have? If yes then try to know how can you also attain it, try to learn on how your relative does it. But if no, they why bother? Don’t you have a goal as well? That’s why you don’t have to be overwhelmed by someone achievement, be happy with them and focus on your own goal.
So no more jealousy over someone success and don’t be overwhelmed by it either. We live with our own timeline yet we live in a large world on large life, we need to learn on how to make peace within ourself to life along with the world that keeps on changing. So keep on going, don’t stop grinding, hold on to your grit, and that’s how you become larger than life.

addressing some issues ~
you can not like bangtan or you can love them, whatever is the case there is one thing which everyone has to admit it: right now Bangtan is rewriting the kpop history. They broke many records and they achieved many things which were impossible for anyone who wasn’t from the big three. You can’t argue with this because if you look for who got the daesangs, who got the big awards before you can see that they were always from the big agencies. If you watch interviews with people from the street, all of them says that the agency matters in Korea, they all say a group/ a singer needs a stable background from them to have the media support since debut.
Bangtan was a rookie band with promising future thanks to their amazing performances and passion. They didn’t achieve things under one night, they climbed the ladder step by step and didn’t fell after the first succes - no, they remain there then went up to the stars. It’s something what for I will always be proud, because breaking prejudice, barriers which were out of their limit seemed like an impossible mission but they did it! and they gave hope to many other aspiring artists.
Those who are under no-name agencies with as great talent as anyone has in the big agencies now can dream that one day they can become like Bangtan- they see that hard work can pay off in the end... you can go to the AMAs and be no.1 on the charts on your own, with supporting fanbase - without too much media attention.
Bangtan not receving presents anymore is not a bad thing, please don’t be offended by it and accept their decision. In the past, fansites bought expensive, branded clothes for the boys to not be looked down by others like media, haters, artists. During debut era they weren’t well off finincially but during the years as many of you know, they became successful which also means that financially they are stable now. As Namjoon, Jungkook said somehow this became a touchy subject to them, they wanted to show off all the presents which they got, wear them to make the fans happy and thank them in this way - however it somehow became a burden. They get so many things that at this point it’s impossible to use all of them, especially that it’s now almost feels like a competition to see who will buy more Gucci to the boys or who will buy more stars to them. I know all of you mean well :) they know it too, but they are at a point where they can take care of themselves so now! they ask you to take care of yourselves too or your parents/friends. ^^ But those who might be sad because they can’t send their fanarts to them anymore or very little presents - they shouldn’t worry either. I’m sure fansites will organize events where you can submit your work/present and when they attend fansigns, there they can give it to them! ....there is a solution for this too. It’s not something bad, it’s just a choice which had to be made at this rate....our fanbase is so big and it was overwhelming for our kind hearted boys to show off all the great presents which they got since they didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
I mentioned this many-many times in my other rants too but...if someone tries to pick up fight with you just because you are an ARMY, just ignore, block the other person. Award seasion is almost over and finally we can breathe after that a little bit because this is a heated time...but until then try to hang in there and be the adult one. It’s hard to resist, sometimes you can’t help just leave a salty comment...yeah, I understand but don’t get involved in any useless fight because in the end you will get hurt by those harsh words. If you need, take a break from social media when you see a useless fight there, calm down a little bit or block the tag for it...do whatever can help you...fanwars are never worth the effort. Also when something is unfair believe me, karma will find a way to solve the issue. ;)
our fandom isn’t saint either let’s not forget that. It’s okay to educate others and tell them their mistakes but do it in the polite way! sometimes it helps and the person will change but sometimes it doesn’t and you just get frustrated with the other. It happens, there are things which we see differently, there are topics which on we have different opinion. Pointing out mistakes and hearing criticism and all of these above...they don’t mean that someone tries to pick up a fight. Discussion is the key of the world.... let’s hear out each othe, learn and help to the other. We have people who are in their 30s but we have people who are in their 20s; we have people who are from a wealthy background but we also have people who struggle with life....there are many people here, it’s impossible to get along with all of them but we can always try to remain educated humans.
this is my last personal opinion but...i wish people would drop this stan twitter attitude no matter where they are ( internet or real life) and wouldn’t create drama in a topic 1) which about they have nothing to do 2) which about they don’t have knowledge 3) which doesn’t even make sense 4) which doesn’t even involve them, they just think it’s offensive when those who are involved actually have no problem with it. Nowadays saying opinion is like a mission impossible thing because someone will definitely get offended ....stan twitter attitude is the posion of the human relationships -.-

How To Become A Professional Hunter In Africa

eBook by Steve Robinson
2nd Edition
‘How To Become A Professional Hunter In Africa’ reveals every strategy and secret I’ve learned hunting in the African bush as a Professional Hunter.
Hi, I’m Professional Hunter, Steve Robinson.
There are many things you can do to become a PH in Africa that may make a tremendous difference to your success.
‘How To Become A Professional Hunter In Africa’ details everything I’ve learned from over 30 years experience.
I’ve written this book as a step-by-step information resource to help you succeed as a Professional Hunter and succeed in the African hunting safari business.
“An informative book by someone who has “been there and done that” which any prospective professional hunter would do well to read.
If you are thinking of a career in professional hunting, then this book would be a great place to start. Steve tells it like it is. A brutally frank discourse on a profession as rewarding as it is challenging.”
John Harris – Former President KZN Hunting and Conservation Association
“Wow, Steve. I have been hunting professionally for 14 years and I can honestly say I have learned a lot from ‘How to Become a Professional Hunter in Africa’.
Well done, it was well overdue in the industry and will not only put new Professional Hunters on the right track, but will also be used as a reference for those of us that has been hunting for some time. If there was a book like this when I started it would have made my first few years a lot easier, you say it the way it is! A book that will be referred to as the future Professional Hunter’s ‘bible’.”
Jason van Aarde – Professional Hunter in Tanzania, Mozambique & South Africa
I was very lucky indeed in that my first few years’ experience which counted as my, somewhat unusual, Professional Hunting apprenticeship was in a more relaxed generation.
By chance I met and become friends with the now late Vivian Good who kindly gave me that Professional Hunting apprenticeship. He was not only an excellent PH but also a good man who gave unstintingly of his advice, encouragement, hospitality and friendship.
I struck lucky again when I went along to undergo my first formal Professional Hunter training and examination with Ian Goss of the Goss Estates Professional Hunting Academy in Kwa Zulu Natal.
“It feels like I am doing my PH career all over again.
A lot of flashes back into my life, if you know what I mean. It reads easily, it’s clear and very understandable. I can even use some of it in my life right now. The only problem with this e-book is that I should have had it about ten years ago!!!
I can see that it will be the bible for first time and up coming Professional Hunters. Well done!!”
Wikus Groenewald – Professional Hunter – South Africa, Tanzania & Mozambique
“I have had the good fortune to have been on three African Safaris with Steve Robinson as my PH. On each occasion his camps, conduct, knowledge and expertise have been a revelation and, having read his eBook on how to become an African Professional Hunter, I can see why.
The scope and depth of knowledge required of an African PH is astounding and it’s something you don’t fully realise until you’ve read this book.
If I were a youngster and looking to become an African PH, this book would have to be essential reading, indeed, without it, the aspiring PH would need to spend a long time gathering the information contained therein by not only research but also by actual experience, and that sort of experience can take years to obtain.
Additionally, a client reading the book can get a most illuminating and useful insight into the business, gaining an appreciation of just what goes into organising an African Safari and the role of the PH. This will, undoubtedly, give the client a better understanding of what goes on, leading to a better, more enjoyable, safari.”
Peter Lang – Veteran African Hunting Client – UK
The information in this book has never been published anywhere else before. I’ve held nothing back. ‘How To Be A Professional Hunter In Africa’ is your complete, 242 page, step-by-step guide to success in the African hunting industry.
“Good, practical advice in this eBook on bushcraft, camp management, arms and ammunition, the ins and outs of running a safari business, and the law as related to hunting (and don’t forget here that trophy hunting usually involves legislation from more than one country, and African governments tend to regard change as being as good as improvement and are forever fiddling with their laws).
The material herein is well-presented, and from the standpoint of on-the-ground experience, Steve Robinson is more than qualified to write it – it worked for him!”
Ira Larivers – Editor ‘African Hunter Magazine’

“Steve, I recently purchased your ebook, I am a Professional Hunter from South Africa. I am also hunting the Zambezi Valley.
The reason for writing you is although I am an experienced hunter this ebook is the best resource I have come across, very informative and as the saying goes “you are not to old, or too clever to learn something new” this book contains valuable information and tips even to an experienced hunter. The “I know it all” guys can buy this book and find out that they do not know it all there is people, like you, that know more.
Thank you for an excellent resource, and I wish you the best with your safari hunting career, if you treat your clients like you have compiled this book they are surely in good hands and your mentors can but only be proud of you.”
Theo Verster – Professional Hunter, South Africa
“Possibly the most concise, comprehensive, and relevant book ever written on African Game Hunting.
Steve Robinson’s book will provide essential guidance to the newcomer, and will also be a useful remedial guide to the more experienced hunter that may be experiencing some problems.
His passionate and non-apologetic approach to African Game is relevant throughout the book, as he concentrates on the subject of hunting rather than it’s continual justification.
I think you will need two copies, one for the hunting truck and one for the bookshelf.”
Shaine Derrick – UK hunter

“Unique is a much used and an often inappropriately applied word, but it certainly describes this fascinating e-book by Steve Robinson .
Written in a light but authoritative style the author takes you through the trials and tribulations of becoming part of (and being successful in) the African Hunting Safari industry. Well illustrated with colour pictures and peppered with his experiences as an Englishman who came to Africa some thirty years ago and made a success of life as a Professional Hunter and Safari Operator, the book really is an invaluable asset to anyone thinking of a career as an African PH.
But in truth it is more than that, it is an up to date insight into the world of Professional Hunting in Africa and will be of as much interest to clients and African hunting buffs as to prospective Professionals.
The book is entertainingly structured featuring not only the authors work but contributions from others, either directly or through links to the extensive Shakari Connection website.
From Cites to cisterns, buffalo to bullet performance all aspects of life as a PH are covered. Steve does not pull his punches and quickly dispels romantic illusions that some might have of the industry.
If you ever wanted to know how to construct a top quality wilderness hunting camp, manage staff and clients and the thousand other things that are required of the modern African PH then this is the only readily available source.
Whilst there has been (and still is) much published from the Safari client perspective no previous work has addressed the ‘other side of the campfire’. I certainly wish it had been available when I started my recent path to PH status. Steve and Susan are to be congratulated on an original and innovative contribution to the industry.”

What is a Health Coach? Everything You Need to Know
Hiya Gorgeous!
I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon. When people start practicing radical self-care and focusing on their wellness, not only do their own lives change… but they’re motivated to share their newfound knowledge with those around them!
It makes so much sense. When we know better, we do better. And when we do better, we want others to do better, too!
I see this quite a lot with participants from my Crazy Sexy You program and members of my Inner Circle Wellness community. There’s such joy in discovering vibrant health and overall well-being that we naturally end up wanting to lead others in their own healing.
I’m often asked, “Kris, how can I turn this passion for health/food/mindfulness/etc. into a career? What is a health coach and is that something I could possibly do?”
My answer is always an enthusiastic YES! Health coaching is an amazing field that allows you to encourage others to make real, lasting changes in their lives. It’s the perfect complement for folks who already work in the health and wellness space (as yoga or meditation instructors, or life coaches, for example). It also makes a great second career for anyone who wants to bring their vocation more in alignment with their values. There’s nothing as empowering as living out your mission through your work!
Because I know that you might be curious about health coaching, I wanted to take this chance to answer the most frequently asked questions I get, including:
What is a health coach, exactly? What do they do?
What qualities make a successful health coach?
How do I become a health coach? Do I need a degree or certification?
There are so many options for training out there—how do I know which one to choose?
Ready to dive in? Let’s go!
What is a health coach, anyway?
I love this definition from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (aka IIN—more on them later!):
“A health coach is a supportive mentor who helps clients make healthy lifestyle choices. Whether the goal is to lose weight, increase energy, or sleep better at night, a health coach motivates individuals to make lasting changes and feel their best.”
In other words, a health coach is not a therapist, a Registered Dietitian or a medical professional. Instead, a health coach is an advocate with specialized training and expertise who can support people who want to improve their health and live a life of wellness.
How amazing is that?! When I was first diagnosed with cancer, I would have loved having a health coach who could help me navigate the confusing, overwhelming world of eating for health and healing. I had to experiment and test everything out myself. It would have been such a relief to have someone guide me through the process, providing the benefit of their experience and wisdom, but allowing me to be in control of my decisions.
And here’s a really cool factoid for ya: In recognition of the valuable work that health coaches perform, the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs successfully applied for the creation of new Category III CPT codes for health coaching through the American Medical Association (AMA), which will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
Now, that’s a mouthful, so let me give you the bottom line in a single word: Validation. The most well-respected medical organization in the US is recognizing the importance of health coaches as well as the growing role health coaches are playing in helping individuals take charge of their own wellness. This is just the beginning!
What does a health coach do?
Health coaches work in a variety of environments, from private practices to coaching for businesses and organizations. Many of my friends who’ve gone through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition program have online business where they coach people online, either individually or in groups.
Here are just a few of the ways you can use your health coaching certification:
Coach. Join or start your own private coaching practice. You can specialize in weight loss, specific diet modalities, working with a particular population (elderly, athletes, teens, etc.).
Write. Share your knowledge in your own books or blog, or write for magazines or health and wellness news sites.
Cook. Develop recipes, create your own meal delivery service or become a personal chef. Yum!
Educate. Help larger audiences learn about health and wellness by speaking publicly to schools, community groups, businesses, etc.
The possibilities truly are endless!
What qualities make a successful health coach?
Successful health coaches come in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds. There is no single profile that is best. Instead, the most successful health coaches tend to be those who are most passionate about their subject.
I’ve seen great health coaches who were yogis, recovering addicts, just out of college, just retired, former cancer patients, former lawyers and everything in between! (IIN has a great section on their website with stories of their graduates. Check that out here if you’d like some inspiration!)
That being said, there are some qualities that most successful health coaches share:
They love to share their passion for health, nutrition and wellness.
They have undertaken their own healing journey and now are moved to help others.
They’re go-getters and self-starters. They don’t need someone standing over them to make progress.
They’re empathic and passionate about serving others.
They love to learn and stay up-to-date on the latest research in their field. They also know that one diet doesn’t necessarily fit everyone.
If this sounds like you, keep reading!
How do I become a health coach?
Currently, the health coaching field is not regulated. Pretty much anyone can call themselves a health coach and start taking people’s money—scary, right?!
Of course, I’m assuming you want to be a legit health coach, someone who has the best interests of your clients at heart. In that case, you’ll want to look into certificate programs.
Certificate programs differ from degree programs in several ways. Certificate programs tend to be narrow in scope, focusing on a specific subject (such as health coaching). Degree programs are typically offered by 2- or 4-year colleges or universities and are broader in scope. As a result, degree programs usually last much longer than certificate programs. IIN, for instance, offers an online health coaching certification program that you can complete in as little as 6 months.
Once you complete the certificate requirements, congratulations! Queue the pomp and circumstance and break out the champagne (or perhaps a green juice mimosa?!)—you’re a certified health coach!
There are so many options for training out there—how do I know which one to choose?
You are absolutely right! There are dozens of options from in-person weekend trainings to months-long online certifications. Selecting one is not something to be done lightly. The organization you choose will have a big impact on your future.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself when choosing a health coaching certification program:
Do you want an online or in-person program? You may be limited on options for in-person certifications, especially if you don’t live in a major metropolitan area. But even if you have access to a local program, you may want the flexibility of taking courses online. Being able to log in from anywhere certainly has its benefits!
What is your ultimate goal? Do you want to start your own coaching practice, or are you hoping to score a job with a company or organization? If you want to be hired as a health coach, make sure the certificate you’re considering is accepted by the organization or business you want to work with.
How much time do you have? Yes, there are weekend and week-long certification programs, but let’s get real. Are you going to be able to learn everything you need to know to be an effective health coach in a weekend or just a few days? Probably not. Of course, a 6-month or year-long program is more of a time investment, but you’ll be rewarded with a deeper level of expertise. Unless you’re just testing the waters to see if you like the field, I suggest foregoing the wham-bam programs in favor of a more comprehensive curriculum.
What’s the cost? The tuition for health coach certification can be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to thousands. While I’m all in favor of bargain shopping, this is one time when you don’t want to cheap out. You typically get what you pay for with training and education. A higher price tag may seem unnecessary, but look at the sum of the services the program provides in terms of curriculum, quality of instructors, support, job placement/career assistance and more. This can easily translate to a more successful business or career, so make sure you take everything into account.
How long has the program been around? Just as there are no regulations for health coaches, there are no real regulations for health coach certifications, either. Anyone can start a “program” and hand out certificates. Dig into the background of the program. When did it start? Who are the faculty? Are there any notable graduates? How many people have been through the program? Know what you’re getting into before you commit.
Ok, Kris… what do YOU suggest?
I’m so glad you asked! If you couldn’t tell already, I’m a big fan of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN).
Not only is IIN the world’s largest nutrition school with over 100,000 graduates from around the world, it’s also been around since 1992 and counts some of my colleagues and mentors as faculty. Mark Bittman, Joel Fuhrman, MD, Bernie Siegel, MD, Andrew Weil, MD, Mark Hyman, MD, Deepak Chopra, MD and Christiane Northrup, MD are some of my favorites!
IIN’s program is also approved by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), so graduates are eligible to take the NBHWC qualifying exam after successfully completing both IIN’s health coach certification program and their Coaching Intensive Practicum. This additional certification from the NBHWC can be helpful in further identifying yourself as a top-notch health coach.
I also love the flexibility and comprehensiveness of the IIN curriculum. Since everything’s online, it’s easy to tune into classes and keep up with your program. The average student finishes in 6-12 months (which may sound like a long time, but hey, that time’s gonna pass anyway!).
I also believe that IIN’s business and career support is top-notch. Once you’ve completed the certification program, IIN helps you get your business started with their Health Coach Training Program and peer coaching opportunities. You’ll even get your own customizable website with tools to leverage your brand online and marketing materials to help grow your platform!
If I were starting my wellness journey again, I’d begin here.
When I first got my life-changing cancer diagnosis and became a student of my well-being, I read every book and article about holistic nutrition I could get my hands on. But my gut told me I also needed structure and community. At the time, there were only a couple of certifications that resonated with my philosophy, but nothing was in one place. As a result, I had to weave together a curriculum that supported my needs. I took a course here, a program there and many trainings everywhere.
Though I eventually found the right path for me, I did waste time and money with a few detours. I’m glad I stuck with it because a whole world of possibility opened up for a future filled with health, happiness and success. But if I were starting my wellness journey or beginning a career in coaching today, I would strongly consider IIN.
