god i love just how grand the ellimist chronicles is. right as we near the end of a relatively grounded war story, animorphs suddenly throws us an apotheosis story that balloons in scale to such a degree that it only barely connects to the rest of the series. the story stretches over decades, then centuries, and even millennia by the end - and yet it still takes places tens of millions of years before the series begins. entire civilizations are introduced and then promptly destroyed in the blink of an eye, now remembered only by the ellimist himself. our protagonist's appearance is left vague, giving the early portions of the story a sense of uncertainty as the reader tries to piece together the scattered details toomin gives us and then layering the ending sequences with a grand mystique as he builds and rebuilds his body into a biomechanical deity. crayak, the ellimist's opposite, is never really explained, and we're left only to imagine what sequence of events in some other galaxy led to the creation of a being like him. and then after the book reaches it absolute apex of grandeur, the final page brings us back to the ellimist simply standing next to a dying child. we're back in an animorphs story. the ellimist tells the child that they mattered - that even compared to everything he has been through, this single, comparatively insignificant child still made a difference in the world. and with that, one of the animorphs breathes their final breath. god what a book.
