What do you think maki looks for in a girl? :0
pairing: Maki Zenin x Reader author's note: so I was originally gonna do headcannons but then i just wrote about it and it turned a little angsty? cw: manga spoilers, angst
A lot changed when Maki awakened her true strength: her body, her abilities, even the state of the world. In addition to these massive shifts, there was a slight difference, seemingly inconsequential compared to the rest, in her dating preferences. When Itadori had flung himself towards her with a camera—he used to do little interviews of the students at school—and asked her what she looked for in a partner, she had answered that she’d like to be with someone stronger than her. Maki thought it was best to pursue a partner who could protect her, someone who could help destroy the Zenin clan. However, now that she’s one of the strongest humans in Japan, her previous preference has become unrealistic. Which actually is a good thing, because it opened her up to seeing you in a different way.
Maki’s always found you attractive—more than that, really—but ignored it, writing it off as nothing but a distraction. It wasn’t the right time, she had to focus on getting stronger, getting revenge. But now that her whole world is crumbling around her, she’s realized she needs someone like you.
You’ve known pain—she can remember when you recounted your past, crystalline tears shining in the gentle candlelight illuminating her dorm room—and yet you’re still able to put a smile on that pretty face of yours as you go through this life. Maki’s not sure she has the strength to do the same on her own, not after losing everything. But you’re there for her, able to pull her out from drowning in the darkest parts of herself.
You look at her so fondly, even if she hates how her body is now striped with scars. You don’t seem to mind, kissing her skin as if it were as soft and smooth as your own. Your hands cup her face as you tell her how beautiful she is despite her claims of the opposite. Maki was unsure if she’d ever be loved after becoming more monster than human, but as you work tirelessly to prove her wrong—your stubbornness is adorable to her—she’s beginning to change her mind.

headfirst — zenin maki
zenin maki x smitten fem!reader│word count: 2k
synopsis: A kiss. With tongue. That’s all it was supposed to be. But yn panicking mid-makeout and accidentally headbutting Maki wasn’t exactly part of the plan.
cw/tags: female x female, fluff, suggestive themes, spicy but no smut, awkward firsts, light angst with comfort, established relationship
Tumblr media
Maki had expected a lot of things from tonight.
Some hesitance. A few nerves. A lot of awkward fumbling. But yn squealing and shoving her hands in Maki’s face was something else entirely.
Neither of them were in any particular rush to push their relationship. They liked how they were. It was careful, safe, maybe a little clumsy, but it was solid. It gave them space to learn and time to trust each other.
Still, there were signs. Little ones.
The way yn’s breath hitched when Maki’s fingers brushed her arm. The way she’d chase Maki’s lips after a kiss, just for half a second longer. Or how her eyes darted away the second she got caught staring—too fast to be casual, but too obvious to ignore.
Maki looked too. She let her gaze linger, sometimes. On the curve of yn’s neck, the hint of her chest when she leaned forward, how her skirt rode up when she sat. She stayed quiet, being respectful, but yeah—she noticed.
But tonight was different.
Their usual late-night talks had veered there, and after a series of flushed, roundabout conversations (and approximately seven false starts), they’d agreed to take one small step forward.
A kiss. With tongue.
Simple in theory. Less so in practice.
“WAIT! WAIT! WAIT!”
Maki grunted as yn’s palm smacked straight into her face. She’d been hovering over her on the bed, close but not touching, when yn panicked.
“What? What’s wrong?” Maki caught yn’s wrists, gently pulling them down. Her brows furrowed as she scanned her face—was she hurt? Scared? “Hey. Talk to me.”
“Yeah—sorry! Just—just give me a second!” Yn sat up way too fast, colliding headfirst with Maki’s forehead.
Maki let out a groan, recoiling as she clutched her head. “Ow…”
“OH MY GOD, MAKI!!” yn shrieked, scrambling toward her. “I’m so sorry! Does it hurt? Crap. I can go get ice—wait, stay here—”
Before she could dart out of the dorm room, Maki’s fingers hooked around her wrist, yanking her back. “Don’t,” she said, still wincing a little. “It’s fine.”
Yn bit her lip, guilt written all over her face. She flicked on the bedside lamp, then cradled Maki’s cheeks, tilting her head to inspect the damage. “It’s not swelling,” she murmured, thumb brushing lightly over the spot. “Just… a little red.”
Maki huffed a laugh, leaning into her touch. “Told you. I’ll live.”
Yn let out a shaky exhale, her shoulders finally dropping. “Okay,” she whispered. “Okay...”
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then, slowly, Maki reached out and took yn’s hands in hers, giving them a small squeeze. Her expression softened as she leaned in, resting her still-throbbing forehead against yn’s shoulder.
“You good?” she murmured, her lips brushing softly against yn’s skin, making her shiver. “You kind of lost it there. Did I… do something?”
“What? No!” Yn pulled back just enough to Maki’s gaze, her own eyes wide with insistence. “Of course not. You were amazing, Maki! It’s just… me.” She turned away, cheeks flushing.
That only made Maki worry more. The last thing she ever wanted was for yn to feel uncomfortable around her. But she didn’t push.
She shifted back, just enough to give her space. “If you ever want to talk about it… I’m here,” she said, voice softer than she meant it to be.
Yn pulled her knees up to her chest and hugged them, hesitant. “It’s just silly.”
“Still listening.” She smiled faintly and leaned back, eyes tracing the cracks in the ceiling. “Besides, it’s not like this would be the first time you’ve gone off about something. You literally spent twenty minutes earlier explaining how mudskippers are the only fish that can breathe on land, babe. Did I tell you to shut up? No.”
That got a laugh out of yn. She looked at her again. “Hey! That was important information,” she protested, her usual playful lilt returning.
“And so’s whatever’s bothering you.”
Yn paused, taken aback. Then, she shook her head with a quiet, amused sigh. “I can never win against you, can I?”
Maki’s grin widened. “Don’t take it personally. Nobody can.”
Yn rolled her eyes and gave Maki’s shoulder a playful shove. “Okay, but you have to promise not to laugh.”
“That depends,” Maki said immediately. When yn shot her a glare, she raised her hands in mock surrender. “Fine, fine. I’ll try my best.”
She shifted, pulling her legs up onto the bed and crossing them, her full attention now on yn.
Yn hesitated, fiddling with the hem of her shirt. “I freaked out because… well, you’re like… really hot.”
A pause.
Then, Maki blinked. “That’s it?”
“It’s not just ‘it’!” Yn sat up with a scowl, her ears already red. “It’s the way you looked at me! With your stupid sharp jawline and your stupid perfect eyes and your voice doing that thing—and then you leaned in and I just—my brain stopped working, okay?!”
Maki raised an eyebrow, half amused, half flattered. “My… voice?”
“You know what you sound like,” yn accused, pointing at her. “It was all low and soft and kind of bossy but in a sexy kind of way. And your hands! You have really nice hands, Maki. Like, offensively attractive. You could strangle me and I’d say thank you.”
Maki burst out laughing, nearly tipping over. “Wow. Someone’s got it bad.”
Yn groaned and hid her face again. “This is your fault! You made me say it.”
“Oh, I’m definitely not complaining,” Maki said through her laughter.
But even with her teasing, something tugged gently at her chest.
She had never thought of herself that way. Not once. Words like “pretty” or “gorgeous” had never belonged to her—especially not growing up in the Zenin clan, where power was currency and softness was a flaw. She was all rough edges and hard-earned pride. She knew that. But hearing yn speak about her like this—dramatic, flustered, sincere—it made her feel… beautiful. Remarkable even.
Maki scooted close, wrapping her arms gently around yn and pulling her into a hug.
“Thanks” she murmured, her voice quiet. A blush crept up her cheeks. “No one’s ever said anything like that to me before. Ever.”
Yn froze, just for a moment, before slipping her arms around Maki’s waist and holding her tight. She didn’t speak right away, like she was giving Maki space to let it sit.
Then, softly, “Do you… wanna talk about it?”
A small smile tugged at Maki’s lips. She appreciated yn’s gentle approach, her instinct to ask without pushing. She shook her head.
“Not right now,” she said. “Maybe next time.”
Still, knowing yn would worry, Maki pulled back slightly and reached up to cup her cheeks, her thumbs brushing gently over her skin. “What you said… it was enough.”
Yn looked at her for a moment, something thoughtful flickering in her eyes, like she had more to say. But then she just nodded, choosing instead to lean into Maki’s touch.
Maki was quietly grateful for that. She didn’t need pity. Didn’t need to dig up old wounds tonight.
Yn pulled back slightly, her face still pressed with warmth from Maki’s touch. “Well,” she said, voice lighter now, “I feel like we accidentally unlocked your tragic backstory instead of, y’know… making out.”
Maki snorted. “Sorry. Trauma dumping was not on the itinerary.”
“I don’t mind.” Yn grinned. “It was weirdly hot. Like, objectively.”
Maki raised an eyebrow. “That turns you on?”
“Unfortunately, yeah. You’ve hit the deadly combo,” yn said with mock seriousness, then held up her fingers as if counting. “Tall, intimidating, secretly soft, allergic to feelings? My exact type.”
Maki gave her a long, amused look. “Do you need a minute to get this out of your system?”
“No, I’m good.” Then, a beat. “Okay, maybe one more thing—your arms in that tank top. Just… wow.”
Maki laughed, full and unguarded. She leaned in slightly, their knees brushing. “You done?”
An impish grin. “I might require mouth-to-mouth to recover.”
A chuckle. “You sure you won’t smack my face this time? Or headbutt me?”
Yn’s smile faltered, replaced by a full-blown blush. “I already said I was sorry! And you said you’re fine.”
“I did,” Maki said softly. She let her hand fall back to yn’s knee, lingering. “And for the record… I still want to kiss you.”
The room fell quiet again, but this time, it was a different kind of silence. It was warm and… expectant.
Yn’s eyes flicked to her lips. “With tongue?”
Maki smirked. “Obviously.”
The word lingered in the air between them, sparking something electric. But even then, she didn’t rush.
Her gaze moved over yn’s face—flushed cheeks, wide eyes, lips parted just slightly—and she felt her chest tighten, not just with want, but with something gentler.
She leaned in slowly, giving yn time to pull away if she wanted to.
But she didn’t.
Her breath hitched, just enough to be noticeable, and Maki took it as a yes.
The first kiss was careful, soft. Her lips brushed against yn’s like a question. And when yn answered by leaning in just the slightest bit more, Maki smiled against her mouth.
It was sweet, familiar. Less of a kiss and more of a greeting.
Maki moved her hand up, cupping yn’s cheek, her thumb sweeping gently over her skin. She could feel how warm she was, how tense her jaw still held. So she didn’t deepen it right away. She just kissed her again, slow and steady, letting her get used to it.
But then… yn whimpered. Quiet and wanting. And that changed everything.
A slow heat coiled in Maki’s stomach. She tilted her head, kissed her again, but this time, her tongue slid forward. Testing. Tasting.
Yn squeaked, the sound soft and surprised. But she didn’t pull away.
Instead, she melted.
Her fingers fisted in the front of Maki’s tank top, and Maki exhaled sharply against her lips. The tension in her spine melted away, replaced by a flickering, ticklish charge—like fingertips skimming up, sparking little bursts of heat with every inch.
She kissed her deeper, letting her tongue sweep slow and deliberate, drinking in every soft gasp and needy pull.
And then yn tugged at her—clumsy, eager—and Maki followed, letting herself be pulled down until they tipped back into the bed in a mess of limbs and laughter and flushed skin.
“Ow—your elbow—”
“Sorry, sorry—”
Maki laughed, already breathless. They were tangled, half on top of each other, wide-eyed and utterly dazed.
God, she’s gorgeous.
Not just her lips or her skin or the sweet curve of her hips—though, yeah, those were definitely doing things to her—but it was the way yn looked at her. Like she trusted her completely. Like she’d give her everything, just because it was Maki.
And that turned her on more than anything.
Maki dipped her head again, stealing another kiss from her. This time, hard.
All that careful tenderness from before burned away in an instant, replaced by something hungrier. Her hand slid down to yn’s waist, gripping tight as their mouths crashed together. Their teeth clinked, breaths hitched.
She could feel yn’s fingers digging into her shoulders, could hear the soft, breathy whimper against her mouth, and it only made her want more. She kissed her like she couldn’t get close enough, like maybe if she pressed hard enough, she could melt right into her.
By the time she pulled away, they were both panting.
Maki leaned her forehead against yn’s, trying to catch her breath.
But yn was still looking at her. Her eyes were glazed, lips red and swollen, chest rising and falling in ragged, shallow bursts. Then, barely audible, she whispered, “... Again?”
Maki’s throat tightened. Something about the way she said it—so willing, voice fraying—nearly undid her.
She nodded. “Again.”
And she surged forward.
Her lips found yn’s with a kind of reckless focus, all tongue and heat and dizzy friction. Her fingers slid beneath the hem of yn’s shirt, exploring the warm skin at her waist. A quiet moan slipped out—Maki didn’t even know if it was hers or yn’s.
Probably both.
They tumbled deeper into the bed, hands grasping, hips shifting, lost in the press of mouths and the quickening thrum of want.
It was messy. It was overwhelming.
And it was only the beginning.

Can I ask for an ask of reader kissing makes scars and burns after the zenin massacre
Kissing maki zenin's scars
Spoilers for the jjk manga
Tumblr media
You sat on your bed thinking about what just happened. Your girlfriend knocked on your door covered in blood and told you she just massacred her entire clan and that her sister died, you were obviously shocked by it but still hugged her and let her in.
She took the opportunity to use your shower to clean the blood off of herself while you waited you thought about how terrible maki must feel after mai's death, you wanted to console her, to tell her that you were there for her and that you would never judge her for what she did, the zenins were all assholes anyways.
Your thoughts were interrupted by maki coming out of the shower only wearing a towel, you blushed a lot but couldn't stop staring, you had to admit your girlfriend was really attractive especially after she got those burns in shibuya.
"What are you staring at?"
"S-Sorry, it's just that you look good with the burns"
"You think so? Naoya said they made me look ugly"
"You mean that sexist jerk? Why are you listening to him?"
"I wasn't, but still, thanks,"
"No problem I love you maki never forget that"
She smiled slightly and blushed, she really needed to heat that.
"......do you mind....if we cuddle?"
"Yeah sure I'll go change you wait"
"A-actually, are you comfortable with me kissing your scars? We don't have to if you don't want to but you really look like you need some kisses for comfort"
Maki blushed and sighed, normally she would probably deny such a request but after the events of the day you were the last thing she had left, the last person she could love and be loved and comforted by, she knew she needed comfort so she agreed.
She asked you to close your eyes, took the towel off and laid down on your bed. When you opened your eyes you were met with your girlfriend's bare back littered with burns and scars that you immediately put your arms around and started to press your lips to,making sure that maki could feel your love with each kiss.
"Thank you this...actually feels really nice"
"It's the least I can do, please just know that you can always come to me for anything, I love you"
In this very rare moment of vulnerability, maki felt like everything that happened had been washed away from her, your sweet words and kisses were enough to make her feel at least slightly better, and yet she felt like crying at the same time, the idea of you being ripped away from her like mai filled her head and she knew she just couldn't possibly handle that. Even if she stopped herself from crying, her next words still came out sounding so sad.
"......please don't ever leave me......I-I love you too much to lose you"
"Don't worry I promise you I'll never abandon you, I will always be with you, through everything, I love you too"
Maki felt her lips curve upwards ever so slightly at your reassurance. She knew you loved her just as much as she loved you. Right there, she made another promise to mai's spirit:she would always protect and love you no matter what, you were the most important person in her life, she wasn't going to lose you no matter what.

Maki Zenin x gn!reader
Summary: The Kyoto students have arrived for the goodwill event, You catch the eye of your best friend's sister.
A/N: this is self indulgent
Maki Zenin had never felt love. Love was a foreign emotion to her, she had no need for love. When she saw love it was from afar, or in music, or in a story.
Love did not creep in through windows or fill the sky, it was never something she hunted for, found in a pool, like an exotic treasure, back in the days of sailing ships trailing canvas and hempen ropes.
Despite not feeling the need for love, Maki found herself constantly surrounded by people who were deeply in love or searching for it. She observed the way they would hold hands, kiss each other, and look into each other's eyes. It all seemed foreign to her, like uncharted territory.
Maki watched what love did to people, the way they act, behave, and hold themselves. It was like observing an animal in the zoo. They move differently than she does. She looks at them with a sense of wonder and curiosity. She watches love like watching a car crash, it's terrible but she can't look away.
Maki thought she had everything figured out until the day she met her sister's best friend, you.
She and Mai didn't get along at all. Not since Maki had left the clan, leaving her sister behind to deal with the consequences. But when Maki locked eyes with you, something shifted inside her. It was as if she had been struck by lightning.
She tried to ignore the feeling, dismissing it as something she had eaten or the heat getting to her, maybe just from the anticipation of the Goodwill Event starting any day now.
It wasn't all that hard for her to avoid you. You were inclined to avoid her anyways, you listened to every word that Mai blabbered. Every time she saw you, you were sandwiched between Mai and Momo, your arms hanging around the pair.
But every time Maki couldn't help but take a peek at you, to see what you were up to or how you were doing. She did this in silence, often when you're looking somewhere else or lost in conversation.
Maki couldn't understand why she was feeling this way but she didn't want it to go away, but she thought if it did, it might be for the better.
She tended to wonder if you were ignoring all of the Tokyo students, you seemed friendly enough with Inumaki and Panda. Still, something about the way you carried yourself, the way your eyes gleamed with a fierce intensity, and the way your voice had a cadence that lured her in, made Maki want to unravel the mystery that was you.
One day, while she was completing her usual routine of training alone in the woods, she found you alone, in her usual spot. Part of her thought it better to not engage with you and leave you sitting on the ground by yourself. But as she turned to walk away, a soft voice called out to her.
"Hey," you said, looking up at her with a small smile on your face. Maki felt her heart race in her chest as she stopped and turned to face you.
"Can I help you with something?" Maki asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
You shook your head. "No, not really."
"Then why are you here?"
You shrugged. "I just needed some quiet time. It's hard to find that in the dorms, especially with that lot." You scuffed your shoe on the dirt, "Your sister threatened to shoot someone if people didn't stop yelling, I'd rather not be an accessory to murder." You laugh lightly.
Maki couldn't help but smile at your joke, feeling a warmth spreading through her chest. She took a few steps closer to you, drawn in by your easy laughter and the way you seemed so comfortable in your own skin.
"Is it okay if I sit down?" she asked, gesturing to the ground next to you.
You nodded, shifting over slightly to make room for her. As Maki sat down beside you, she felt a strange fluttering in her stomach that she couldn't quite explain.
For a few moments, the two of you sat in silence, staring out at the forest in front of you. The forest was quiet, the canopy above you rustling in the wind. Birds tweeted in the distance and the sun shone down through the trees, creating a mosaic of light and shadow.
"I never took you for the type to enjoy quiet time," Maki said, finally breaking the silence.
"You've known me for only a few days, is that really the impression I give?" You ask, turning to face her with a raised eyebrow.
Maki chuckled, shaking her head. "I meant more like...you seem like a social butterfly. Always surrounded by friends and always talking."
You snorted in disbelief. "Me? A social butterfly? Definitely not. I just happen to have a group of people who tolerate me."
Maki chuckled softly, turning her attention towards the forest again. "I don't believe that," she said. "You seem like someone who people genuinely enjoy being around."
You tilted your head to the side, studying her for a moment before replying. "I appreciate the compliment, but trust me, it's not true. I'm not the easiest person to be around."
Maki shook her head, a small smile on her lips. "I think I'll have to disagree with you on that one, even if you are her best friend."
You couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth spread through your chest at Maki's words. It was strange, but despite having only met her a few days ago, you felt like she understood you better than most people you had known for years.
"Thanks, Maki," you said, giving her a small smile. There was a brief moment of silence between the two of you before you spoke up again. "You're different from what I thought you'd be."
Maki raised an eyebrow, turning to face you with a curious expression. "Oh? How so?"
"I don't know," you said, shrugging your shoulders. "I guess I just had this preconceived notion of what you were like, and you've completely shattered it."
Maki laughed quietly. "Is it because I'm not as uptight and formal as you thought I'd be?"
There was a twinkle in her eyes that drew you in, and you found yourself smiling back at her. "Maybe that's part of it," you agreed. "But mostly it's because you're...I don't know, refreshing, I guess."
"I like to think so," Maki said, looking out at the forest with a thoughtful expression. "I take it she told you I was the devil incarnate, out for blood?"
"Something like that," you said, chuckling softly. "But I'm glad to see that she's wrong." You turned to look at her face, taking in the way the sunlight filtered through the trees and danced across her skin. "You're not the devil, that's for sure."
Maki met your gaze and held it for a moment longer than necessary, a faint heat creeping up her neck. "Good to know. I wouldn't want to scare you off with my devilish ways."
You both fell into a comfortable silence, content to simply enjoy each other's company and the serene beauty of the forest around you.
But the peacefulness was soon interrupted by a call of your name. Maki felt like a rock had hit a glass window, shattering it.
You turned around to see who it was and noticed that it was Momo. You sighed and scrambled to your feet. "I suppose I have to go now."
Maki nodded, her lips pursed in a thin line. "Of course. Duty calls." You wished you could stay here with her, basking in the warmth of the sun and the beauty of the forest.
As you turned to leave, Maki caught your arm. "Wait," she said softly, her eyes searching yours. "Do you want to come back here later? Maybe after everything's settled down?"
You blinked in surprise, not expecting Maki to ask you that. But the hopefulness in her eyes tugged at your heartstrings, and you found yourself nodding before you even thought about it. "I would like that," you said, smiling at her.
Maki beamed at your response, and you felt your heart skip a beat at the sight. "Great," she said, her voice light with excitement. "I know some beautiful spots deeper in the forest that I'd love to show you."
Maki hadn't thought she would want to hang out with Mai's best friend. But as she watched you leave, she couldn't help but feel a newfound sense of longing. She had always been a solitary person, content with her own company and the soothing quiet of the forest. But something about you had sparked a curiosity in her that she couldn't ignore.
You dragged your feet a little as you approached Momo, not wanting to leave the peacefulness of the forest behind. As you neared Momo, you noticed the concerned look on her face.
"Mai is going to murder you if she finds out that you were here with her," Momo said.
You rolled your eyes, knowing Momo was right but not wanting to think about it. "I know, I know. But it's not like we were doing anything wrong. We were just talking."
Momo snorted, clearly not convinced. "Whatever you say, but just be careful, alright? I don't want to be the one to explain to Mai why her best friend got her heart broken by some forest hermit that she just so happens to be related to."
You let out a laugh, knowing that Momo was just teasing you. "I'll be fine, Momo. I promise." You tell her as the two of you walk back towards your temporary dorms.
The next time you saw Maki was that night. You'd closed the door to your room gently, incredibly hesitant to let anyone know you were leaving. You almost tiptoed down the hall, careful not to make any noise that would alert anyone to your departure, your heart pounding in your chest at the thought of being caught.
But as you stepped outside, you saw Maki waiting for you, with a small smile on her face. "I hoped you would come," she said softly.
You felt the heat rise to your cheeks as you looked at Maki, mesmerized by her beauty. Her hair was untied, the reflection of the moon in her glasses, and her eyes glowed in the moonlight. You felt drawn to her, unable to resist the pull that you felt towards her. "Can you blame me?"you said, your voice barely above a whisper.
Maki chuckled lightly, a sound that sent shivers down your spine. "No, I can't blame you," she replied. "It's a beautiful night, isn't it?"
You nodded, looking up at the starry sky. "It is."
You watched as Maki walked towards you, her gaze never leaving yours. She slipped her arm around you, pulling you closer, and you felt a rush of heat spread through your body. It was like you were suddenly alive for the first time in ages.
You could smell the subtle scent of flowers on her, and it added to the intoxicating atmosphere around her. "Let's take a walk, shall we?" You nodded, feeling as if you would do anything that Maki asked of you.
Together, the two of you walked under the moonlight, enjoying the peace and quiet of the night. The wind was cool, and it felt refreshing against your skin.
Maki Zenin had never experienced emotions like the ones currently stirring in her stomach. She tried to suppress the feeling, but it was no use. She was hopelessly drawn to you, and losing herself in your presence was the only thing she could think of doing.
As the two of you walked, you could feel Maki's eyes burning into your skin.
It was like she was trying to figure out the thoughts you were keeping in your mind, trying to unravel the secrets that you had kept hidden away from the world. Trying to discover the way she was feeling through your actions, she wondered if your palms were hot or if you were overly aware of your appearance like she was.
The silence hung heavy between the two of you, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was like you both understood that words weren't necessary. The only sound was the soft rustling of leaves underfoot, and the occasional chirp of a cricket.
"Tell me something about yourself," You say finally breaking the silence.
Maki looked at you and smiled, "What would you like to know?"
You thought for a moment, "I'm not sure," you admitted, feeling a little embarrassed. "Just something, anything."
Maki's expression turned thoughtful as she walked beside you "Well, I suppose there are a few things," she said after a moment."My favourite colour is purple."
"Woah, that's way too deep," You laugh, trying to lighten the mood. Maki smiled and chuckled along with you.
"Okay, how about you," she continued.
"Orange," You say, digging your hands into your pockets
"Really, orange?" Maki raised an eyebrow but her tone was amused. You nodded sheepishly, feeling more vulnerable under her scrutinizing gaze.
"I like that," she said softly, nudging your arm with her elbow. "It's unique."
"What is your favourite animal?" You asked
"Your questions are basic," Maki teased, shaking her head in amusement.
"Okay, throw me a question," You tilt your head, challenging her to come up with something more challenging.
"What are you afraid of?"
You paused for a moment, "I'm not sure, people are afraid of a lot of things." You hesitate slightly "I suppose, spiders?"
Maki chuckled, "Spiders? Really?"
"Yeah, they're creepy and disgusting," you say, shuddering at the thought.
Maki looked at you with a glint in her eye, "I'm not afraid of spiders," she declared.
You raised an eyebrow, "Okay, what are you afraid of then?"
"Do you want a deeply honest response?" She says, her voice softening. You nod, intrigued by her sudden change in tone.
"I think I might be afraid," She takes a deep breath "of never being in love." Her words hit you like a freight train. You had never heard someone lay their soul bare like that, especially not someone you had just met.
"That's a deep fear," You say, your voice laced with empathy.
"It is," she agrees, "but it's also important. Love is such a fundamental need, isn't it?" Her eyes never leave her feet as she walks. "But I think recently I've felt something that could be this twinge of love,"
Maki trailed off, lost in thought as she contemplated her feelings. You could sense her vulnerability and hesitation, but you didn't want to press her. Instead, you gave her the space she needed to collect her thoughts.
You feel your heart pounding in your chest. Maki's vulnerability is stirring up feelings you didn't even know you had. You clear your throat, trying to regain your composure.
After a few moments of silence, you spoke up, "Do you think it's possible to fall in love quickly?"
Maki looked at you, intrigued, "What do you mean?"
"I mean, can you have enough of a connection with someone, even if you've only known them for a short amount of time, that you know you're in love with them?" You ask, feeling a knot form in your stomach.
Maki's expression softened as she considered your question. "I think it's possible," she said thoughtfully. "Love is a strange thing. I don't think it follows a set timeline or logical pattern. Sometimes it just happens."
"And this person, who is making you feel this twinge, what are they like?"
Maki blushed slightly, her eyes flickering up to meet yours before darting away again. "Is it terrible to say I'm not sure, or that I don't care?"
You chuckled, understanding Maki's uncertainty. "No, it's not terrible at all. Sometimes the heart doesn't need reasons to feel things."
Maki nodded in agreement, "Exactly. It's like a feeling that's both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Like jumping off a cliff, not knowing if you'll hit the water or the rocks below."
As you and Maki continued walking, you couldn't help but feel the growing tension between the two of you. The air was thick with unspoken words, and you both knew what was happening.
"I think I'm falling for you," you blurted out, unable to contain your emotions any longer Maki stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening in surprise. You could see she struggled to find the right words to say.
"I don't know what to say," Maki finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I feel like I'm in a dream, but I don't want to wake up."
Your heart fluttered at her response, and you took a step closer to her. "Then don't wake up," you said softly, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. Maki's breath hitched as your fingers grazed her skin.
You leaned in, closing the distance between the two of you, and pressed your lips gently against hers, stealing her first kiss. Maki's lips tasted sweet, like honey, and her body was trembling with a mixture of nervousness and excitement.
As you broke the kiss, you looked deep into her eyes, seeing the same longing mirrored in her gaze. You took her hand and led her to a nearby bench, sitting down beside her. The silence between you was comfortable, each lost in your own thoughts as you basked in the afterglow of the kiss.
"I don't want this moment to end," You said, breaking the silence. "I want to stay like this forever."
She smiled, squeezing your hand reassuringly. "Me too, but we can't stay here forever."
You pouted, "Why not?"
"Because reality will catch up with us eventually," Maki said softly.
"I don't care," you said, your voice low and filled with longing. "I just want to be with you."
Maki chuckled, the sound light and airy. "You're such a romantic," she said, her eyes glittering with amusement.

Headcanons for Maki with a Reader who rarely talks at all? Reader’s more of a listener than a talker who tends to respond by making small sounds (ex: hums, grunts, sigh) along side with facial expressions + small hand gestures to let you know that they’re listening.
There’s times where they do say sentences, but it’s short and straight forward to get their point across unless they’re with people they feel comfortable with and it’s something they’re quite passionate about. Then they become somewhat of a chatterbox for a short while until they start feeling insecure (because they accidentally repeat what they already said or stutters) and just quiets down thinking they’re being annoying.
I LOVE GETTING MAKI REQUESTS HEHEHE!! <33
Maki Zen'in with a quiet s/o!
-i headcanon that maki's a lefty, which will be important in a little bit.
-when she first met you in y'alls first year, she did not like you, kinda like the situation with yuta.
-and just like with yuta, she envied you for being stronger than her. literally, when she first saw you, she thought you'd be a grade 4 like her.
-nope! you're a first grade! :D
-it really surprised her cuz u literally never talk??? like ever??? it's nice tho, cuz whenever she's ranting to u about something she doesn't have to worry about u interrupting her.
-"why do you never talk, y/n?"
-*shrug*
-*maki continues her rant*
-it goes like that. LMAOO
-but after a while you start getting comfortable around her and your friends. maki now notices that you make small noises and hand gestures to let her know that you're listening to her, which melts her heart on the inside because nobody ever really listened to her at the zenin estate. (dw maki i'll listen to u <3)
-that envy turns into friendship, and then after quite a bit of time, that friendship turns into a relationship! :D after a very awkward and embarrassing confession
-when she's ranting again, she'll sometimes take a pause and ask if there's anything you'd like to say. sometimes you'd just smile at her and shake your head. on occasions, you'll take a second to think before speaking very briefly. and on VERY special occasions, as soon as she gets the last syllable out, you start running your mouth LMAO.
-"you got anything to say about that-?"
-"yeah! xyzxyzxyz123!"
-and then after a while, you begin to quiet down after your first stutter.
-maki would lift a brow and give you a knowing look. she doesn't fully know it, but she suspects you're insecure about how you sound, or the way you talk. she thinks that you think it's embarrassing and annoying, and it's true. that's why you typically avoid talking with people.
-despite maki being your girlfriend, the person you've talked the most with is inumaki. funny ik
-she'll reach across with her left hand and cup your cheek very softly yet hesitantly, and tell you that it's ok for you to talk, and that she doesn't think you're annoying.
-boy does that hit you hard. you begin breaking down right there because your whole life you've been told that you're annoying when you talk, so you've kept quiet ever since.
-it's awkward after that, since you pushed yourself in and cried into her chest while she kept having to swing her arm around every so often to pat your back and tell you it's ok.
-you felt so bad after that LMAOO
-and after a while, you started talking more and more. from having itadori around, as well as nobara, it's harder to stay quiet since they're always asking why you never talk
-and just when you're comfortable talking again, BOOM! there comes shibuya ;)))) /j
-no lets pretend shibuya does not exist <3
-so now whenever maki looks at you while she's ranting about something, you automatically know that she's asking if u have anythin to say. then you immediately open your mouth and it stays open for a while. 🧐
---
i love maki zenin its literally unreal just like her and i wanna give her the biggest hug
i love getting maki requestssss :>>>

just thinking about aged up maki lately.
cw: light smut, muzzles
the first time you ever suggest it, it’s partially in jest, and only because you’re counting all your hickeys and bite marks littered all over your body from her again.
you think she hates the idea.
she goes perfectly, frighteningly still.
“maki? i was kidding—i wouldn’t—“
“no?” she asks and there’s something strange in her tone. a little hooked. her eyes cut to you.
“not if—no, not really. unless you—“ wanted to.
she swallows. she doesn’t give you an answer then. the look on her face makes you think she abhors the idea.
but here she is now, on her knees in front of you, boxer briefs snug over her muscled thighs, dark fabric taut. she’s still in her binder, too, almost like a safeguard.
(afterwards you will help her remove it, afterwards you will kiss the indentations made on her shoulders and chest and ribs.)
her hair is a little mussed already and her cheeks are flushed an angry, almost indignant red.
you fiddle with a clasp on the muzzle, the quiet clinking and toying all that’s heard in the room, and she looks up at you. her face is enough to devastate you, you think. she’s so handsome. sharp lines of her nose and dark lashes curled ridiculously long against her cheek. the swell of her bottom lip that’s clearly been bitten and rosy.
and she’s letting you, maki trusts you enough to—
“ready?” you ask, almost shyly.
she grunts, jerks her chin up like an offering, like a dare, “just—hurry up.”
you let out a slow breath and drop to your knees in front of her so you’re eye to eye, so you can look in her eyes when you move to carefully slip the muzzle onto her face. she goes surprisingly and uncharacteristically pliant for a moment, letting your fingers move through her short, dark hair to secure it around her.
and then your hands fall from the back of her head and you look at her openly, and the sight of her finally in the muzzle—eyes nearly glaring, all heat, and defiant blush high on her cheeks—is enough to make your breath hitch all tight inside you.
she squirms slightly and, “what? are you just going to stare?”
she’s reaching for you even as she snaps at you a little. you almost want to smile at her bad attitude. you can tell she’s nervous, that it’s affecting her, too.
you let her tug you into her lap. her hands are hot and gripping at you, sliding up your torso, your sides, back down to your hips and thighs and—
“you’re not supposed to talk, maki.”
she opens her mouth. you reach up to touch at the muzzle, carefully loop your fingers in its wiring and pull her face gently down into looking at you. focusing on you.
“it’s a muzzle.” you breathe, quieting whatever she was about to say next, “you’re supposed to be quiet. behave.”
heat sinks deep into your core when you say it; when you see the raw arousal on her face, too. then her face changes, morphs slowly and oh—
you can tell you’re in dangerous territory now.
you yelp when she suddenly flips you onto your back.
she’s quiet, obeying, but you can tell by the heat of her gaze, that look on her face, that she isn’t going down easily. she isn’t going to behave at all. if anything, it’s like she wants to earn the muzzle.
she drags you closer, slots her hips against yours, hooks your legs around her waist.
“maki—“
fingers hitch into the material of your panties and you know, can see the look in her eyes, what she’s about to do.
“don’t! i like this pair!”
she tilts her head a little, as if to say she’s heard you, fingers tangled in the material. she pauses as she eyes you, and then decides, she just doesn’t care.
they come away with a brutal ripping sound. she’s so ridiculously, stupidly strong that its barely anything to her. just a flexing of her toned forearms and suddenly you’re all bare to her. she slides big hands up your thighs, over into the inside, gliding up and down.
you squirm a little.
she leans forward like she might set her mouth to you, then realizes she can’t. the agitation writes itself in the down curve of her brows, the little baring of her teeth and huff of breath.
she palms your tit, a little roughly, a little mean. still, you make a soft noise, arch up into the touch.
she watches you beneath her, lips parted behind the muzzle, cheeks flushed dark, hair falling onto her forehead.
and then she sidles down, moves down your body to settle herself into the crux of your thighs. she throws your legs over her strong shoulders. this is a familiar position to her, to you, and you easily slot together like pieces of a mosaic.
she rests her cheek against your thigh, eyes swinging up to find your gaze. dark heat. you squirm again. you can feel the cool metal of the muzzle dig into your soft skin. you shiver. maki’s hand sneaks up, between your legs and—
your gasp is sharp and sweet.
a knuckle gently rubs through your folds. slippery and easy. so much so that you almost want to throw your hand over your face and hide—especially when she quirks a brow at you, looks up at you as if to say, what’s got you so wet?
what’s got my baby so worked up?
you suddenly miss her voice. her mouth. her teeth. miss how she’d mercilessly tease you and taunt you and kiss you like it was the last damn time she’d see you again.
she makes a rumbling noise, pleased, as she gently eases a finger inside. you make a high, soft sound, hips twitching towards her. you can feel the metal dig into your skin again, wonder if it’ll leave imprints.
you look down at her, catch her eyes. the sight of her again, between your legs now, held back by a muzzle, desire so unabashed and real painted across her face as she watches her finger disappear inside you.
you sink a hand into her hair, comb back the fringe on her forehead, pull a little, hear the clinking of the metal, the buckles, and feel your stomach flip.
“bet you wish you didn’t have that on now,” you murmur and you yelp when she pinches your thigh. soothes it by adding another finger. your yelp dies off into a moan.
“So mean,” you can’t help the slight tremble, the little pout you get, “maybe i should get you a matching leash, too—“
she glares hard at you. leans over your center where she suddenly lets her tongue loll out, the flash of pink, where spit gathers and then falls through the metal wires, some onto it, but mostly onto your core.
“maki—!”
it’s warm still, before rapidly cooling. she rubs it in. makes a mess. makes a mess out of you. until you’re fussing and panting and twisting in her strong hold. until you’re arching into fingers that aren’t quite enough, until she makes you eat your words and wish she didn’t have that muzzle on, until you wish you had more; her mouth, her strap, anything—
until maki reaches to the back of her head and pulls so hard on the strap that it just snaps, a frustrated growl loosening from her throat as she yanks once more to have the whole muzzle come off in a heap.
and then she’s finally pushing forward, uninhibited, to fasten her hot mouth against your core.
her groan against you rumbles through you, forces you to keen, to spasm in her strong hold. her eyes flutter shut as she delves between your folds with a warm, slippery tongue. with an enthusiasm and need that makes you shake.
and she has her fill of you, until you’re a wreck, until you’re boneless and exhausted, until you’re covered in teeth marks and bruised skin, all sore and tender. until you’re swollen from her sucking and biting and licking. until all she can do is mouth along your poor marked up throat.
until she’s smugly satisfied.
as if to prove that perhaps she needed that damn muzzle all along.

“Fuck—Maki—ah—I-I can’t,” you whine, gasping for air.
“You will,” she grins, grabbing your thighs and pushing them down into your chest, opening you up for the tip of her strap to press into your aching entrance. Your hands claw at the bedsheets. You want her there, you want her inside, she just feels so big.
Maki leans further into you, pinning you to the mattress with her weight. She towers over your folded-up form, breath short and a few drops of sweat on her temple, before moving her hips forward so her strap sinks into you, stretching and forcing its way through.
You shudder, body giving in to the pressure; it pushes an airy moan out of you. Maki’s eyes flutter and she also groans, deep and natural like it was her own flesh pushing into your warm and wet canal.
You don’t care if it’s not a part of her, it feels like it is, and you’ll fuck like it is.

Tumblr media
"𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐈𝐓!"
Seeing the first step to your plan with Gojo and Itadori a grin formed on your face.
"Gojo Satoru!". Taking a glance toward Miwa she looked like she was in a daze while Utahime beside her just scoffed.
"I see everyone's together. As you know I was on a business trip overseas with Y/N so she will now hand out the souvenirs".
"Gotcha". Picking up the pink dolls you walked toward Kyoto's side. "Everyone from Kyoto gets this protective charm from a particular tribe" Gojo's voice ran out from behind you.
Giving a cheeky grin to the Kyoto students you passed out the small dolls, stopping at Utahime Gojo proceeded. "And none for Utahime!".
"I don't need one!"
Leaning closer to her for her to hear you, you gave an apologetic smile, "Sorry I'm just following orders".
"No it's fine sweetie it's his fault".
Letting out a small laugh you walked near Gojo hiding mini confetti poppers behind your back. Last step: 𝐒uprise!
"And everyone from Kyoto we have this!" Gojo spun around while you posed.
"Overly excited Adults are weird except for Y/N," Nobara said with an unfazed face.
Suddenly the suitcase opened revealing Itadori. Popping the mini Confetti poppers at the word 'Suprise' that came from Itadoris mouth.
Seeing everyone's unfazed reaction by seeing the 'dead boy' Itadori panicked while you just walked to the unfazed trio beside Megumi and Maki.
"We're you protecting him this whole month?".
Nodding the grin never leaving your face. "I was gonna tell you earlier but I wanted it to be a surprise. And look I got to pop these cool Confetti things".
Pulling the string of an extra one you had the confetti shot out sprinkling to the floor beneath you.
"Tada!"
"You know you're going to have to pick that up right?" Megumi said beside you. "Shh nobody needs to know it's just between us three".
Kicking the confetti behind you, you heard a whistle causing everyone to head to where Principle Yaga was saying to line up with your school.
Remembering your spot from your last sister event. Moving away from Maki and Megumi you walked on the opposite of the line next to Panda.
"𝐓he rules are simple the first team to exorcise the second-grade curse spirit released in the designated area wins. Third-grade and lower spirits will also be released as well. The Tokyo Kyoto Sister school event will be held over two days"
Feeling a slight tinge of tiredness wave over you, you yawned making principal Yaga glare at you then continue.
"That's it you're all dismissed till the event ends at noon".
━━━━━━ ◦ ⋅ ♥ ⋅ ◦ ━━━━━━
"A talking Panda?". Itadori's brows laced up in confusion at seeing Panda talk causing you to nudge Pandas side letting out a laugh.
"I know! When he escaped from the zoo we kept him as a class pet till he started talking".
Everyone tried to hide their chuckle but you just laughed till you could practically feel Pandas glare. Coughing you moved your hand in continuous motion. "So what's the plan?".

Going on a mission with maki zenin
Tumblr media
You were currently walking through a forest with your girlfriend beside you. You had to hunt down and exorcise a curse for a mission, which, when you're a jujutsu sorcerer is as good of a date as any.
"It was nice of gojo-sensei to let us go together on this mission"
"I guess, just one of us could have dealt with It easily though"
"Are you complaining about spending time with me?"
"Of course not, I'm just saying that we could be doing double the work"
"Fair enough, but I prefer going on missions with you"
"The same goes for me"
After that small conversation, you continued walking until you heard a weird noise
"Did you hear that?"
"Yeah the curse must be nearby"
Maki raised her soul-split katana, and you prepared your cursed technique/cursed tool trying to find out where the curse was, when suddenly you were hit faster than you could react and sent flying
"Y/N!"
She used her speed to reach your position and saw you fighting a curse with multiple arms
"Be careful. This curse is at least a grade one. Maybe there's a reason why we were both sent here"
"Don't worry we'll deal with it fast"
"I wasn't worried. I know we will"
Maki jumped and sliced one of the curses's arms, but when she did, two more grew out of the slice
"It regenerated?"
"It's like an hydra. When you cut off an arm, two more grow so it's better we avoid them"
"I'll decapitate it in one slice then"
"OK I'll distract it"
You started fighting the curse while maki approached it from behind and jumped near its neck, but at the same time, you got overwhelmed by the curse and were taken by one of its arms and thrown to the ground.
"Y-YN!"
This distracted maki long enough for the curse to grab her and throw her too but she got up quickly and glared at the curse with a death stare.
"What made you think you had the right to hurt them? I'll kill you bastard"
She jumped so fast that the curse couldn't even perceive it and sliced its neck. Even if the curse was dead, she didn't stop. She stabbed its heart and continued slicing until only pieces of it remained covering her in purple blood.
She then approached where you were and touched you to assess your injuries.
"Are you alright?"
"A few broken bones but nothing shoko can't handle"
"Good, you better not make me worry like that again idiot"
She started carrying you, and you blushed slightly from the action
"W-what are you doing?"
"Isn't it obvious? Carrying you. There's no way you can walk like that anyway."
"O-ok Thanks"
You continued walking for a bit in comfortable silence until you decided to speak up
"Hey, you looked pretty pissed after the curse hurt me"
"Yeah, of course it just hurt you. If you were weaker or the curse stronger, you could have died"
"So you were worried about me?"
"No shit dummy, you're my partner"
"Sorry I guess I just wasn't expecting it"
Maki sighed and her gaze on you softened
"Look, I know I don't say this as often as I should, but I love you, I don't know what I'd do if I lost you.....You're the last thing I have left"
You smiled at her declaration of love and quickly answered
"I love you too, maki don't worry I'll never leave you"
"I'm truly glad"
She lifted you up, closing the distance between you two and kissed your lips softly
"I'll keep protecting you until my last breath"

JJK — How they sleep/cuddle with you. P2
Tumblr media
♔ ft. Maki Zenin, Nobara Kugisaki, Sukuna Ryōmen,
♔ warnings + genre ; none + fluff — gn!reader
Tumblr media
maki zenin. —
Tumblr media
maki gives you freedom to move around while you both sleep, as she hopes you would do the same for her
although you both aren’t facing each other, you’re still touching
whether it be back to back or your butts are together 😜
just because she isn’t holding you doesn’t mean she doesn’t need you next to her
if you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or something, maki would sit up and wait for you to come back
the weight lifting on your side of the bed is enough to pull her out of whatever dream she was in
maki finds comfort in knowing youre there, right behind her
nobara kugisaki. —
Tumblr media
Nobara is a wild sleeper and i’m not hearing otherwise
it’s so hard to get a good nights rest with her sometimes
she rolls around, switching sides fairly often, swinging her legs and arms out 💀
it’s bad because she isn’t even conscious of it. you always tell her she has whole boxing matches with the mattress
this girl refuses to believe you. mhm mhm she isn’t hearing it
you once woke up with her fist in your mouth and her right foot in your side
it’s just best for you to sleep at the edge of the bed
sukuna ryōmen. —
Tumblr media
i don’t see him as the smothering/overly affectionate type
sukuna would put his arm out for you to lay on, but he wouldn’t embrace you
you put your arm on his chest and snuggle your head under his
your warmth is soothing to him
but he also likes to leave his arm out, so that it’s easier to just slide it out and go
sukuna doesn’t want to feel attached
Tumblr media
♔ i kinda dont like how this came out..in spite of that i hope you enjoy !

clueless - maki zenin x reader
Tumblr media
request: “I was thinking Maki Zenin x Fem reader where y/n is really intimidated by Maki and has avoided her since they first met each other. Despite that, they both have feelings for each other and after a while Maki gets annoyed with y/n and confronts her to figure out why she keeps avoiding Maki. And then the reader accidentally confesses and says something like “how could I not feel intimidated by someone so hot!?”” - @wh0legrain
summary: it’s difficult for you to read maki’s intent when she tries to become more approachable to you, which throws of your plan of trying to avoid her at all costs. alternatively titled: maki zenin is terrible at flirting (genre: fluff, attempt at humor, idiots to lovers)
warnings: like one or two swear words, mentions of bruises/scrapes from training
word count: 2.6k
a/n: i honestly had so much fun with the dynamic between maki and reader here! i love the idea that maki would have no idea how to flirt lmao
“don’t look now, but she’s looking at you again.” panda, your current sparring partner, peered at her over your shoulder as you got into a fighting position. of course, out of curiosity you immediately turned around, and unluckily for your own ego, you made direct eye contact with maki. she seemed to have no intent of backing down from your impromptu staring contest, intense black eyes remaining on you, and had you not been so focused on trying to figure out what had caused this sudden interest in you, you’d have noticed the amused glint in her eyes.
did she really have no shame in being caught staring at you?
before giving yourself any more time to process her expression, you whipped your head back around to face panda. at least you were able to take note of the amusement on his face.
“i don’t get why she keeps glaring at me.” you huffed annoyedly, still feeling her gaze burn into the back of your head. shouldn’t she be busy sparring with inumaki? “if it’s about that one time i borrowed her uniform skirt because mine was in the wash, she should be more mad about inumaki and gojo taking it every time she’s on a mission to try it on.”
panda had a shocked expression on his face, as if to ask why the hell you knew about the boys prancing around in the girl’s skirts whenever the opportunity arose, but it was quickly wiped off to be replaced by a knowing sort of smile.
“no, i doubt that’s why.” his voice rang with the sing-songy sound of knowing something you didn’t, but you simply chose to raise an annoyed eyebrow at his annoying little game rather than question him.
even as you ran at him, fists raised defensively, you swore you could still feel a pair of sleek eyes trailing your movements. you slid to dodge panda’s swing at you, leaving a layer of dirt on the hem of your shorts. despite succeeding in avoiding sparring with maki, which admittedly sounded absolutely brutal, you felt extremely ungrateful for panda’s strength as he lifted you up by the wrist. somehow he managed to end up with you flipped onto your back, despite your best efforts to sweep his legs out from under him. if losing to a literal panda in a fight wasn’t embarrassing enough, it didn’t help that this was the moment maki had decided to suddenly start paying attention to you, a fact you became acutely aware of as she hovered over you, her figure shadowed by the sun behind you.
“you okay?” she cocked an eyebrow, extending a hand to pull you to your feet, making you suddenly conscious of how her legs were positioned on either side of you, so you laid beneath her. when you were unable to sputter out a response, she sighed softly, leaning down so she knelt with her knees resting on the dirt on either side of your thighs. a hand waves in front of your face, and makis brows furrow slightly. “did you hit your head or something because of that idiot?” she cocked a thumb at your sparring partner.
something about her sudden proximity seemed to shock you out of your distracted daze, making you push yourself up so you held yourself by palms flat on the ground. taking note of how close your face was to hers, the corners of her mouth turned up in a smirk, her lips parting slightly to show her teeth. you weren’t even sure if she was aware of the fact that she was smiling right now, or the effect she was having on your already embarrassed state as she leaned over you, her figure shadowing yours.
why was she so intent on making fun of you?
“i’m fine!” you managed to blurt out, pulling your knees close to you to escape the compromising position she’d put the both of you in.
her eyes remained playfully narrowed and her lips turned up, but as she opened her mouth to say something, you practically sprung up from the ground as if you weren’t bruised and tired from fighting, turning on your heel to go back to panda. you flashed an awkwardly apologetic smile, before shrouding yourself in panda’s shadow.
you found yourself grateful for the shadow panda cast on you, as it shielded your eyes from the sun, and the glare you knew was inevitably resting behind maki’s glasses.
the four of you remained sparring until the first glimpse of heavy gray clouds masqueraded the blistering sun. you helped panda up from where he’d laid on the ground, spotting out of the corner of your eye none other than gojo, who looked almost comical inspecting the state of the sky with his usual dopey smile while still adorning his iconic blindfold. had you not known any better, you’d say he looked like a complete idiot.
on the other hand, maki, who did know better, seemed to have no problem stating that he did, in fact, look like a complete idiot.
“so are you just gonna stand there all day, moron? or do you actually have something important to say for once.” maki crossed her arms over her chest, making her jacket taut over her muscles, catching your attention for the briefest of moments. you quickly averted your eyes back to gojo in hopes of not being caught staring as she had earlier, as if you were a kid caught with their hand in the cookie jar. though you couldn’t see gojos eyes, you could sense a sort of mischief from him as he smiled at you. was today just some weird holiday where people stared at you for no reason that no one had informed you about?
“you guys seem to have the sky on your side today.” gojo smiled widely as his gaze flickered between the four of you lined up in front of him. “since it seems to be about to rain, you guys can get off a little early today, just go clean up in the bathrooms if you need to.” he waved his hands at you all, in a motion that seemed to be shooing you away.
you begin to feel the beginnings of drizzling rain hitting the tip of your nose, and the top of your head, and take that as your cue to leave. letting out a breath you didn’t know you had been holding in, you unzipped and shrugged off your hoodie, throwing it over your shoulder as you turned towards the heavy doors of the school building. you’d only gotten a couple steps closer than you’d been before you heard the familiar sound of your name, called from the less familiar source that was maki zenin.
“wait up!” she called, taking long strides to catch up to you. “if we’re cleaning up now, i’ll come with you and i can help you if you got scraped or anything.” her hand rubbed the back of her neck, and a soft smile cracked onto her lips, egging you on to respond.
you furrowed your brows slightly. she had never bothered to help you out like this before, so what made it different. “i think i’ll be fine.” you hoped your embarrassment at the idea of the situation didn’t show on your face.
“tch, it’s not like i’m planning to kill you in there or anything.” honestly, you wouldn’t be surprised if she had been. “it’ll just be weird if we’re both patching ourselves up in silence when there’s clearly a more efficient way to do it.”
screw her for always being correct.
you nodded your head in agreement in a way that was comically defeated. she motioned for you to follow her, and so you trailed behind her like a lost puppy.
though you had no way to prove it, you could’ve sworn that gojo winked at you from underneath his blindfold as you passed him.
the two of you walked in silence that seemed comfortable for you, but maki seemed clearly impatient.
“i wanted to check on you and ask if you were alright.” she broke the silence, pulling off her rain stained glasses to wipe them on the edge of her shorts. “you seemed really frazzled earlier, so if you hit your head or something we can take you to shoko, i wouldn’t want you to get seriously hurt or something.”
you were somewhat surprised by her words, but feigned indifference as you smiled reassuringly. “i’m fine, was just kinda lost in my thoughts earlier. guess you kinda just caught me off guard.” you were telling the truth, so why did it feel as if you were lying straight through your teeth?
as she swung open the girls bathroom door, she gave you an incredulous look, as if she was trying to recall the events of the day that could have made you so tense. you hoisted yourself up to sit on the sink, leaning back with a sigh of relief from finally relaxing your muscles. maki grabbed the small first aid kit, positioning herself to stand between your legs,a position that was oddly reminiscent of when you’d been on the field earlier. she caught your wrist in your hand, causing you to jump slightly as her eyes scanned your forearm, riddled with some bruises from training, but nothing that really needed cleaning.
“what could i have possibly done to catch you off guard?” her words sounded concerned, but contrasted the teasing smile playing at her lips. under the fluorescent lights, you could make out the flush tinted on her cheeks from being outside all day, as if she’d been kissed by the sun herself.
suddenly you felt very shy, twiddling with your thumbs in your lap, and willing your eyes anywhere but where they’d meet maki’s. to her, your current flustered state was an amusing contrast to how you were when fighting curses, your usual confident and strong willed demeanor had been replaced with the attitude of a bashful school girl. still, you knew you’d have to be confrontational in this moment.
“please stop teasing me, maki.” you looked her dead in the eyes, wiping the amusement from her face, and swapping it with a mixture of shock and worry.
“i’m not making fun of you.” she shook her head, her already pink dusted cheeks turning more red. “what makes you think I am?”
you chucked humourlessly. “well if the glaring at me wasn’t enough, you seem to keep trying to embarrass me. if it’s because of that time i borrowed your skirt without telling you, i really am sorry, but stop trying to make fun of me.”
“when did you borrow my skirt? i always just assume it’s the boys being idiots. you can borrow my skirt anytime you want.” you wished you could be mad at her for her nonchalance. “besides, YOU’RE the one who’s always avoiding me, panda told me i should try to be more approachable, so i thought eye contact might help.” she shrugged exasperatedly, placing her hands flat on sink, resting on either side of your thighs.
“well, you don’t exactly have the most approachable face when you’re making ‘eye contact.’ you had me thinking you were plotting my downfall in your head or something.” she stifled a laugh at your overdramatization. “it was totally intimidating.”
“oh?” her smile was dopey, one that only you would be flustered by. “does that mean i make you nervous?” her voice was hushed as she tilted her head downwards toward you, looking satisfied with herself.
“well you’re gonna make anyone nervous if you’re sending them death glares one second and offering to clean their wounds the next.”
her only response was a laugh as she buried her face in her hands. it wasn’t a mean laugh, not one directed at you, more so just her laughing at what idiots the both of you were being.
“you really thought i hated you?” her words were spaced apart by involuntary giggles, her mouth was stretched into a wide grin, almost like one from gojo. “man, i thought i was so obvious!” she turned to hoist herself next to you on the sink, leaning her head on your shoulder as her whole body shook from laughter.
you said nothing in response, just processing if this moment was real. you’d hardly seen maki smile before today, let alone laugh.
“you mean to tell me you’ve spent all this time avoiding me because you thought i hated you?” admittedly, when she repeated it back to you after her outburst of laughter, it did sound rather ridiculous. but to be fair, she should’ve considered the possibility before her sorry attempt to be more approachable.
“it’s not my fault you scare the crap out of me, i mean, how could i not be intimidated by someone so hot!” your mouth moves faster than your brain, and she lifts her head from your shoulder, making you hyper aware of both your words and your sudden proximity to her face.
shit.
your eyes are wide as saucers as you stare at her, convinced that, like a dinosaur, if you don’t move, she won’t even notice you’re there. much to your dread, she smiles yet again (seriously, today alone make up a solid 90% of the times you’d ever seen her smile.)
“you’re such a dumbass, you know?” you can hear the laughter threatening to bubble up in her voice. you wish you could come up with a clever comeback, but you just stared back, moth gaping like a fish out of water. “the reason i was asking panda for advice was because i like you. in hindsight, i suppose he’s probably not the most reliable when it comes to relationship advice.”
“all you really got out of following his advice was making a fool out of me.” you looked down at your feet. “but i guess i kind of did that myself anyways.”
“don’t beat yourself up about it. it’s cute.” she leaned forward so she was in your peripheral, willing you to look at her. “plus if you weren’t such an idiot, i’d have to keep sending you ‘death glares’, as you like to call them, to get your attention.” she chuckled, and you lifted your hand to shove her playfully, before she caught your wrist effortlessly, tugging slightly so you could feel her breath fan on your face.
once again, your mouth moved before you had time to think. “maki...can i kiss you?” you’d taken note of how her eyes darted between your eyes and your lips.
it was her turn to be bashful now. she nodded slowly, her eyes half lidded, as she dared to close the small amount of distance between the both of you. without second thought, you press your lips to hers tenderly, letting your arms loop around her neck, hands meeting between her shoulder blades. her eyelashes tickle your face as they flutter closed, with her hands balancing her, palms flat on the sink counter. the pitter pattering sound of rain from outside echoed in you ears.
the kiss is messy and awkward, but in that moment, you felt on top of the world, smiling into it without a care in the world as your fingers played with the ends of her ponytail. you break away reluctantly for air, taking in the dopey smile on her face, and the way her hands reached to grab yours to hold in her own, rubbing small circles in the back of your hand with her calloused thumb. her breathing is soft and steady, clearly still readjusting after your kiss. wordlessly, she leans forward to rest her head on your shoulder, so you can feel her breath hit the crook of your neck, making your breath hitch in your throat.
“thank god you’re such an idiot.”

Chapter 23: Christmas Miracle
“Stand there!” Maki held me firmly in front of the fountain with pretty lights. She took a few steps backward and said, “On the count of three you smile, okay?”
I tidied myself up a little and fixed my hair. I looked into the camera while holding my handbag in front and tilted my head in a pose.
“One.”
“Two.”
“Three.”
Maki looked at the picture and smiled. I tried to go up to her to check how I looked in the picture but she softly pushed me back and said, “Last one and we’ll take a picture together.”
I leaned my elbows in the barrier of the fountain. I wanted to try and look sexy so I could tease Maki. She shook her head and gave me a cheeky smile.
“One.”
“Two.”
“I love you, Y/N.”
With that, she made me smile in an instant. I don’t think I was even looking at the camera when she clicked the button. I ran up to her and smacked her arms, but my cheeks were undeniably a crimson color. She showed the picture and told me, “See? You look the most beautiful when you look at me.”  I smiled seeing the picture she just took. My eyes were filled with admiration for Maki. The way my eyes sparkled when said she loves me. The way she can easily make me smile, and a blushing mess. The way my heart hurts but in a comfortable way. Too much emotion can be the cause of my death, but my “too much” love for Maki is what will save me. I wanted to post that picture, so I asked her to send it to me. Maki even edited it to perfection before sending the edited and the unedited pictures. She didn’t forget to take a picture, so she extended her long arms and took a selfie. I was hugging her in the picture while my head was on her chest. She had her other arm wrapped around my shoulder, as we gave the biggest smile for the picture. Because with her, I am at my happiest.
