For my seven day challenge of Make Something 365, I will be making a flower in different mediums found around my home ~

During this period of lockdown because of COVID-19, I’ve been pretty un-creative It has been months since I blogged, used my DSLR camera or made something other than a yarn crafts. So I brought 365 MAKE SOMETHING to try and jump start my creativity, with the aim to write or make something everyday and document it. Starting on the 1st July.

Today’s prompt involved venturing out and using found objects, as I mentioned it is during the COVID-19 pandemic, this didn’t seem like the greatest idea. So I decided it was a great time to return to Tumblr and start a proper online account of my creative journey.

AND hopefully someone will discover my journal and be inspired.

10 years ago today, I made a tiny orange paper skull that started a chain reaction that completely transformed my life!

The Skull-A-Day project was a simple idea, meant to boost me out of a creative rut that I'd fallen into. I never expected it would lead me to a new career, opportunities to travel the world, multiple book deals, opportunities to show my art in museums and galleries internationally, and even a visit to The Martha Stewart show. I still get opportunities almost daily related to the project. 10 years of dividends on a 1 year investment is pretty amazing. All of this is the reason I consistently encourage others to take on the daily creative challenge. Even as small a commitment as 30-days is enough to create major changes in people's lives.

Please join me in celebrating our craniums today by taking a moment to do one little creative act and sharing it with the world, you never know where it will lead!

Sketch Kai!

Inspired by the birth of my son, Kai, and spurred on by Noah Scalin’s ‘365 A Daily Creative Journal’, I’m embarking on a sketch challenge to draw Kai every day for one year. Kai was born in May 2017 and has quickly become the center of my wife, Maya, and my worlds. He’s changing so fast and this project is a creative way to capture the change while growing my creative and art skills in the process.

There are no strict rules on format or medium, only that I stay open to exploration, play, encouragement and feedback.

Make Something 365 Days 1-3

Day 1

My plan was to begin this project on the 1st July. I ordered the book and it arrived late on the 30th June, so I left it next to my bed to dive in early in the morning. As I result, I didn’t have a great start, the first prompt was to find something in your immediate environment, and I had nothing around me. I did manage to find a lipstick tucked away in the drawer (un-used in months as I haven’t worn make-up in lockdown).

Day 2

This prompt was easier, to make something based on your favourite animal, I had recently knitted a little duck (yet another lockdown project), so for this prompt I decided to draw the knitted duck!

Day 3

Make something out of paper! I had previously tried my hand at origami, attempting to make a few Star Wars figures, so I had some origami paper at hand. It seemed the easiest thing to make would me a classic paper crane.

I love the ideology and history of paper cranes, and yet I had never made one myself.

ON JUNE 4TH, 2017 SKULL-A-DAY TURNS 10!

In 2007 Noah Scalin had an idea. He would make a different skull a day for a year on his blog, the idea was simple, but crazy enough to go viral within weeks. It landed him book deals and an appearance on the Martha Stewart Show, all the while completely transforming his art and life in the process. Because of its rabid following the Skull-A-Day project continued long after its first year and grew from a fanbase to an international community of skull art creators!

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of his seminal Skull-A-Day project we're kicking off a 30-day “skull-a-bration” and everyone is invited!

Starting on June 4th – the date Skull-A-Day project launched 10 years previously (now known as Skull Appreciation Day) – Noah will be re-sharing the first 30 skulls daily on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and of course here on Tumblr.

In addition skull lovers everywhere are invited to celebrate Skull Appreciation Day on June 4th, by sharing their own original skull themed artworks on a variety of platforms.

Prizes will be given to anyone who completes their own 30-day skull art challenge between June 4 and July 3 using the #SkullADay & #CreativeSprint hashtags.
