Okay, it's no secret that I'm an All Might stan. I LOVE All Might. Very very much. Not just as a simp, but genuinely, I enjoy his character SO MUCH.

--And unlike what some people may think, I'm not totally blind to his flaws. I know he sucks as a mentor and that he's done way more harm to Deku than good. He's.... not perfect. in every sense of the word. The whole point of AM's character is that he is a DEEPLY FLAWED individual— but at the end of the day, still good.

This new chapter gave me SOOO many new feelings. I'm not gonna lie to y'all and say I was a Stain apologist beforehand because I wasn't. I disliked Stain to a certain degree, but I also knew he was morally grey enough that I was able to still quite appreciate him as a character. This chapter was about EVERYTHING to me because I honestly did NOT expect Hori to go in this direction and for things to happen the way they did. It was too good to be true! Too fanfic-y! The disbelief I felt when I read what happened was on par with when Bakugou and Deku had that apology and kinda-hug in the rain!

But this disbelief is not because it was a bad thing.

I think the writing in Chapter 326 is phenomenal. The moment that All Might was really beginning to lose hope in not just himself as a hero, but himself as a PERSON... we finally hear the opinion of someone who would abso-fucking-LUTELY make or break the last of his spirit.

Stain is, as much as his views are pretty agreeable and his label is that of a vigilante, still a pretty shitty guy. He's tried to kill literal kids who got in his way, even if said kids made pretty dumb decisions. AM hearing what he has to say is absolutely mind-boggling to him because he knows all of that. He knows Stain is a shitty person and that his worldview is perhaps terribly skewed. He knows Stain has spent a hot minute frying his brains down in Tartarus and isn't good at making judgment calls. Knows that for all intents and purposes, Stain's opinions are not to be trusted.

But the thing is... Toshinori also knows that Stain, regardless of the soundness of his mind, is telling the truth.

Regardless of how fucked-in-the-head Stain is, we as readers are able to acknowledge that he isn't blinded by hero worship. Sure, he's bitter, cynical, and quite the absolutist--but Stain is still clear-headed enough to be able to see AM's flaws for what they are and accept them, ultimately proving to Toshinori that the power of All Might was never his own but rather the legacy that he inspired.

The society MHA takes place in is flawed. We all know this. Heroes, as a concept, had been corrupted into being purely about good and evil. Purely winning fights for money or fame or the abstract concept of victory (coughs Endeavor and the no.1 spot coughs), making heroism as we know it about flashiness and power instead of mercy and the desire to help others.

All Might symbolizes the ideal version of the Hero Society. He represents doing the best you can. Being a hero until you reach your limits, and then going even past that. He symbolizes pure intention and the desire to be a hero not for material gains but because of the pure want to make society a better and safer place. Stain refers to Kamino Ward and the statue as a "holy land" because he believes that through and through, AM's only had the purest of intentions and morals. To him, Toshinori was like a deity that had no fault in making society what it was in the present because that accountability fell on the generations of heroes that failed to fulfill his legacy.

The point being, Stain understood that All Might was fundamentally not about 'being there' for everyone 24/7, but rather the message his presence had sent.

All Might's monologue at the beginning of the chapter essentially boiled down to the ideas that:

A. He regrets not being there properly for Deku

B. His image was a delusion that ultimately led to the downfall of hero society.

To break this down, his problem with Deku is his inability to be a competent mentor. It shows that he has led him down dangerous and horrible paths (Deku's stubbornness to do things by himself and his 'dark' arc post-war), and is unable to bring him back into the light even if he tries. It was only when Class 1-A had intervened that they were able to get Deku to rest and let people tag along, after all, which is why Toshinori was far too embarrassed to follow him into UA's walls even after everyone had come out with umbrellas.

Stain disproves this in two ways.

First, he says that it was never about All Might's ability to actually be there for people. The whole point of what inspired Deku to be the inherently good-hearted "true hero" he is today is because of the values that AM's brand had instilled in him as a child. AM's biggest positive impacts came from behind the screen where he was used as the proof that true heroes can and do exist. Deku does want to be exactly like All Might, yes, which is why we see Toshinori leading him down the same path that he walked--but the underlying message of this is that the very first thing All Might gave him even before OfA was the courage to help fix society.

I do believe Deku is an innately compassionate person. Most people in the series are. However, what makes All Might's smile so uniquely impactful to what it did to Hero Society is the way it gave people courage to help people. Less hesitation. Less bystander syndromes. The ability to move without thinking. Because you can feel the want to help a person, but the courage to be nosey and actually do it? That's portrayed as something AM's image teaches people.

The second way he disproves AM's insecurity of dragging Deku down is that he makes it clear that this pain is somewhat of a necessity in reforming society. He says, interestingly enough, that this is but the 'middle process' in reforming society. This spills over to how he addresses Problem B, but what Stain is essentially saying here is that this sort of brutality and isolation that Izuku faces is impermanent. A phase. It implies that even if Deku is struggling and Toshinori is unable to help him, it is something that needs to happen before they re-realize the ideal heroes All Might's image is meant to create.

The second problem in regards to how All Might feels about current society (how it's collapsing because of him, etc. etc.) is more interestingly addressed. There are many things that Stain says--like how Toshinori doesn't need to actually be the one to fix society with his bare hands. The current society is not his fault because of the fact that it is not finished developing. I'm not sure if I can go so far as to say that Stain means this in the sense of the Scorched Earth method of tearing everything down to build it back up better-- but I can say that Stain still has faith in society to rebuild after this period of chaos.

This rebuilding starts with the old generation of heroes correcting what they messed up (i.e. Endeavor v Dabi) and more importantly, paving the way for a better generation of heroes that was inspired by All Might's image. Heroes that are led by people like Deku, who is defined by his proclivity to help without thinking. The violent deconstruction of society is about exposing society to the raw truth of All Might's image that not everybody can be as strong as him-- which is why we have to take care of each other.

When the lady comes in to remove the sign and start cleaning the statue, it's symbolic. It's a clear metaphor that the past few chapters are the turning point for society as a whole, and how people are starting to remember what real heroism is. From the distrust that was seeded in society ever since LoV had surfaced, we are seeing that trust being returned TEN-FOLD now that people can see not only the mask of a hero's smile, but also the person underneath.

I think it's some really neat symbolism here too about how Deku, who's metal mouth guard was literally all about representing All Might's smile, is shed.

This is hero society dropping their masks. Letting people see them for as they are. Toshinori revisiting the statue in this form makes all the more impact because he shed his mask ages ago during the Kamino Bust, so this is him coming face to face with the image he's created and seeing the differences between them, and how his image continues to live on even after he's almost completely Quirkless. The lady cleaning the All Might statue shows off the fact that things can be repaired again--that society can be clean (hehe stain pun) again.

It's interesting to me here how Stain offers the information from Tartarus.

He doesn't care anymore about his life. It's evident. He disagrees with what the LoV is doing, but believes enough in Deku to think that it's time for him to retire the mantle of 'Stain'. Unless this is another test, it's very odd for me to hear that Stain is offering a blade and his life to someone he isn't even sure is All Might.

But the impact of this action reads loud and clear.

This is Stain taking pity on All Might. This is him realizing that All Might too is a person behind the hero. That Toshinori Yagi is incapable of doing anything past the image he had already created. By offering that knife and information on Tartarus, Stain is giving control back to Toshinori. He is giving AM the chance to do something big again to help society's reconstruction. To be a part of the revolution that he so badly deserves to see. That knife is essentially an exit ticket from the sidelines, and one last chance for All Might to be able to see what his image has done for people.

I personally think that the main reason Stain is willing to die then and there by Toshinori's hand, despite not being sure that he is All Might to begin with, is because of the final impact it creates that it isn't about Toshinori Yagi's true power as a person, but the image of All Might. It is because he looks like the symbol of peace, that Stain (the literal HERO KILLER) feels comfortable laying his life in his hands and giving away valuable information.

If that isn't a great testament to the power of AM's image, I don't know WHAT is.

I guess all I have to say is I absolutely love what Stain did in this chapter. Everything felt so incredibly symbolic and emotional and as someone who absolutely ADORES All Might and what he stands for in the story, this felt like a cool balm after seeing Deku tragically reject his bento box a good few chapters ago. I have a few more opinions about symbolism, and how I think Deku's generation of heroes is going to stray from the old gen, but I think that's a discussion for another time.

A Quick Refresher

This blog is a continuation of a previous blog of mine. It’s about my progress through anxiety. Here’s all of my previous posts:

Have you ever heard a song that changed you? One that really shook you to the core? Three years ago that song was “Sing” by the ever so iconic My Chemical Romance. To this day, it is still my favorite song. Anyways, recently the illustrious Shawn Mendes released a song called “In My Blood.” And, let me tell ya, since I first heard “Sing” I have never heard a song that shook me so hard. This song is actually about Mendes’ anxiety disorder, which only adds to the power behind it. According to Wikipedia “Mendes has been open about his anxiety disorder, which he disclosed publicly through “In My Blood”;” and honestly, I think it’s a perfect song. Here’s what he said about it:

“I spoke to a therapist a couple of times […] Therapy is what works for you. Therapy is listening to music and running on the treadmill, therapy is going to dinner with your friends—it’s something that distracts you, that helps you heal and so it just depends on what you think therapy is. I made a conscious effort to be more connected to the people in my life. I found I was closing myself off from everybody, thinking that would help me battle it then realizing the only way I was going to battle it was completely opening up and letting people in.”

Honestly, his song describes my life in a manner that’s almost terrifying, and his statement says something that I haven’t thought about enough. Depression and Anxiety isn’t only the lack of will to do things. I’m constantly on discord with friends, or practicing an instrument or working, but I don’t let people in. If you read my blog (which is highly improbable) you would probably know that. It takes baby steps to get better, so maybe I should start with my friends. Maybe I need to face my problems by letting people help me. And here I am, in my history class, about to cry my face off because of Shawn Mendes. Maybe I sound like a thirteen-year-old, but I guess that’s okay.

I wrote the first part of this at about 10 this morning, so let me recap the rest of my day from 10 tonight. I was doing so well until about 12:30 and then I just lost it. I don’t know what hit me, I guess it was like an episode. I even talked about trying to switch schools or something because no one cared about me. That all seems irrational now but it sure as hell didn’t feel that way earlier. I opened up to a few people, mostly people that already had an idea or that knew about my anxiety though. I also tried to open up to my parents, to which they basically just said “I get it” “everyone feels that way” “I’ve felt that way” “Why don’t you open up to us more?” “Why don’t you pray?” All things, might I add, that you should never say to a depressed person unless you have gone through things with them.

In the fourth grade, my teacher told me that when someone’s relative dies you never tell them you understand because you don’t really. Maybe you’ve lost a relative and know that it’s sad, but you don’t know that person’s specific relationship with that specific relative unless you’re really close to them. Having depression is like that too. You can feel depressed, maybe you even had depression but just because you’ve experienced it before, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you know how the person you’re talking to feels. It’s better to just be there. Just listen. Don’t try to import yourself unless you know that person is okay with it.

Praying also bothers me because, to me right now, it’s like this giant douchebag in the sky made me with a mental disorder and the cure-all panacea to that is to ask said douchebag to fix me because I love him. And on top of that he’s gonna condemn like half of my friends to hell for being gay, and maybe even myself for being bi. But I should still love and worship him anyway because he might not and an entire civilizations worth of people have been wrong for 2000 years. I appreciate when people pray for me, and that they go to their highest power and ask him to help me. But sometimes I have a hard time comprehending all of that, so telling me the best way to fix it is to pray and not actually work out my problems really just doesn’t help.

One good thing that happened today:

There was a double rainbow after my therapy session. I don’t really know about God right now. He and I have had our differences if he’s even there. But if he is, I hope this is a sign that I can get better.

I genuinely don’t know if I’m going to finish out the school year. I only have about three weeks left (two if you count exams) but I’m just so incredibly done I can’t even put it into feasible words. I just want to sleep honestly. It’d be even better if there was no limitation to how long I sleep. But now I have to go to school, go to work, go to the therapist and repeat supplementing a different activity for ‘go to the therapist’ every day, and on top of all of that I still have homework. I don’t get anything going on in a math-related class, I’m tired as fuck and I have about three tests and two projects due this week. I just don’t know if I can actually pull through with an A in any of my classes except for, like, band.

Something good that happened today: I became the official first chair flute at my school (if I haven’t already said) but in a more literal sense because we had our last concert this year). My band directors boyfriend even came (then again he comes to all of our concerts). I saw a few of my graduated friends.

One of the biggest struggles of living with a mental disorder is that telling people about it sucks. According to some source I read, some 40% of children struggle with a mental health disorder before they graduate college. *Note* that does not make your struggles any less real. Despite this evident factoid, I don’t talk about my problems. It makes me feel like I’m being clingy or grasping for attention. Because of this, my therapist is the only one that knows the key struggle to everything: although I’m not suicidal I genuinely wish I wasn’t alive. I feel like it’d be better if I’d never existed in the first place, which is ironic because I was artificially conceived. Ah, irony, sweetly stabbing me in the back once again. Being stabbed to death by irony, I feel, is a very savory way to die. 

No one else knows why I’m depressed, not even my closest friends, albeit a few know that I have depression and anxiety. Most importantly, my teachers know nothing. I’m a rather good student but some days are hard. I’ve been known to completely fail a random quiz leaving my teacher in awe at how I, a 95 average student could get a 48 on something as infinitesimal as a vocabulary quiz. And when my Chemistry teacher tells the whole class we’re literally not going to get into college because we failed a chemistry test, she doesn’t understand that it stresses me out more than it would most people.  And I pretended that I was just sick to the boy that tried to comfort me because what can I say, I cry a lot but I hate to do it in front of other people because, again, it makes me feel like I’m dragging attention to myself. Just note that even if someone says they’re okay it doesn’t almost mean they are. Please act accordingly.

A good thing that happened today: I won the award for best sophomore musicianship; I won it for freshman year too. Since obviously, you guys don’t go to my school you should know that this is the only award you can win as a freshman, sophomore or junior.

The idea here is to write about something good that happens every day, so I suppose I could mention that my religion teacher gave me a 120 on the project that I did based off of tumblr pictures and homestuck music. I find it a particular type of irony, like the kind that laughs at god because yeesh homestuck is Satan’s work (but hey the music is pretty good right?). I also discovered the name of my band directors boyfriend. Since I (allegedly) go to a Christian school, this factoid becomes even more significant once you enlighten your brain with the fact that my band director is also a man. Not that this is surprising to any of you because he’s a band director and this is tumblr. So anyways, please do enjoy my shitty blog that’s gonna give me a will to live. Good night y’all.

What are Bully Sticks?

Bully Sticks. Also called pizzle, these sticks are a natural, healthy option over commercially processed rawhide aimed at hours of chewing enjoyment for canines of all shapes and sizes.

But what exactly are bully sticks? Experienced dog owners choose them over other forms of chewing treats without a second thought – but always hide a knowing smile when they overhear a novice owners ask what they are made from. If you’re not sure what bully sticks are, we could tell you – but what fun would that be?

Unlike traditional rawhide chews, bully sticks are highly digestible. Because they break down easily in your dog’s stomach, there is less chance of intestinal blockage – unless they swallow large chunks.

To Chew, or Not to Chew?

Rewards can be part of training, or generically used because they’ve been a good boy. Whatever you choose, try to be consistent in the rewarding – and never reward bad behavior!

Lets be honest, sometimes dogs need distractions. They’re bored, or the weather outside is frightful, and they’re underfoot to the point of banishment. Sometimes it’s the doggie parent that needs the break from throwing the ball for the ten millionth time.

Bully sticks are perfect to occupy your furbaby for long chunks of time, but never give a chew or treat because YOU are frustrated or need to occupy them somewhere else. Rewarding what you consider bad behavior is a recipe for future disaster.

If you need to distract your pup while you finish that report or project, take a breath and an extra few minutes to send your dog to their spot or the couch – and then present them with the chew.

Training

Training can be made easier for dogs that love to chew, and can easily fall into a training pattern by withholding and returning their chews. From incorporating chews while teaching “stay” and “place”, to rewarding them for a job well done, bully sticks are more than just a chew toy.

Staying busy

Occupying their mind – and mouth – with a chew is a win-win for human and canine alike. We all feel the effects of boredom, and when our canine kids can’t get out and stretch their legs, that pent up energy still needs to be spent. Is Raw Paws® a Better Product?

Hmmm …. There’s no easy answer to this. If you were to ask me if Raw Paws® produces a quality product, and would I feed it to my own canine kids – I would answer with a resounding “yes”.

The value for product is above industry standard – more than fair, and the company has clearly combined ethically sourced quality ingredients with a focus on high nutritional value, and are then proportionally packaged for easy feeding and freshness.

Are they better than everybody else? I can’t answer that since I haven’t reviewed everyone else, BUT you don’t necessarily have to do a full-throttle review to get a feel for a product, to know whether it’s above average – or below average.

Strictly from an ingredient point of view on a website, a curious consumer can learn a lot about a product.

Are they 100% natural? Do they contain additives and preservatives? Are they flavored? Remember – added flavoring is added chemicals.

Websites of quality product will tackle these questions head on with openness and honesty.

Still not sure? Then remember this simple rule of thumb – if a company or manufacturer doesn’t come right out and state it, than they aren’t. Is the “preservative free” label missing? Then it’s got preservatives. It’s as simple as that.

A few minutes of investigation on your own – including reading reviews by non-biased companies and consumers – can avoid a lot of hassle and bellyaches for your pup, and less heartache for your wallet down the road.

Specs on the Sticks

For this review, we tested the standard 6″ bully sticks. Also available are 10-count pack of 6″ standard, 2- or 5-count packs of 6″ jumbo, and 3-count pack of 12″ jumbo.

Sourced from Brazil, the beef is grass fed and free from industry-standard antibiotics. The bully sticks themselves are crafted from 100% beef, without any added preservatives, additives, or chemical flavoring. Nothing but 100% natural beef … uh, just google it.

Pencil for scale

This product is noted as “low odor”. Unfortunately, such a claim is completely subjective; that being said, it is my opinion that Raw Paws® bully sticks are definitely lower in odor than most, although they are not odor-free – from either end of the dog!

The resealable bag really was that – resealable. It might seem like such a little thing, but we’ve all been there with “resealable” bags that weren’t. And that’s just a big ‘ole pain in the bully stick, if you know what I mean. Because the product is a dried natural product, refrigeration was not required – and that was appreciated as well.

Don’t forget; like any pure beef product, bully sticks contain amino acids – a nutritional requirement for any healthy canine.

Although they contain multiple nutrients and minerals, bully sticks are not to be considered part of your dog’s diet; they need a consistently balanced diet with the proper nutrients fed in a reasonable manner and quantity for your individual canine’s needs.

Treats are meant to be just that – treats. If your dog is filling up on chews, cut down the amount he gets.

What we liked

As a natural option for chewing, bully sticks are at the top of the pecking order, so to speak.

For over a century, rawhide has been the traditional go-to for dog owners. Unfortunately, as modern manufacturing techniques, contamination concerns, and the pursuit of cheaper products are brought out into the light of day, an alternative for chewing treats was needed.

Bully sticks have gone from an exotic treat to surging forward as a primary chewing option to not only satisfy a canine’s natural desire to chew, but to combat boredom – and control plaque and tartar between professional cleanings.

Raw Paws ® uses only specifically selected, natural product. For us – and this review – that’s a big thing. As you would expect from the base product, there is wide variation from one stick to the next, in formation and coloration.

This is a hallmark of a truly pure, natural product. Only a manufacturing plant can make something perfectly uniform – and how natural can that be?

The bully sticks we tested left no stain or residue on the carpeting or the beds, and I credit this back to the lack of ancillary ingredients and fillers.

If a product is truly made from 100% beef (or chicken, or what-have-you) like this one is, you don’t need to add to add extra chemical-created flavors to make it taste like what it is. Right?

The two of the three dogs involved in the review – the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Rottweiler – both enjoyed the sticks in their own way.

The Pittie engaged in recreational aggression with the stick before conquering it. His jumping and running around in circles as he tossed it about showed his clear enjoyment of the play – and stick. Once settled in chewing mode, he ate about half, before wandering off. A few hours later he polished it off.

The Rottie took her prize to her bed, and curled up for an afternoon of delicate surgery as she slowly disassembled and ingested the stick in one sitting.

What we didn’t like

Traditionally, the primary drawbacks of bully sticks has been their odor. While the commercially processed sticks have managed to eliminate the natural odor with the numerous additives and preservatives, as well as over processing the sub-quality ingredients, the trade-off simply isn’t worth it.

By using only higher quality, natural ingredients, Raw Paws® has reduced the odor – but it’s still there.

Although keeping the product in a sealed container and using before the expiration date (yeah, that’s important when feeding fresh or high quality food and treats) when feeding bully sticks, it’s important to remember that there is odor both before eating, and after eating, if you know what I mean…

The concerning issue with the bully sticks we sampled from Raw Paws® was the reaction from the GSD.

Not only did she refuse the bully stick, she made her opinion quite clear as she barked at it.

And I don’t mean the playful barking at treats that’s exhibited by some of the breeds, like GSDs and huskies – but barking at it. “Get back or I’ll tear you a new one” kind of barking.

Outside of the downright hostile reaction – that was clearly dislike rather than fear or aggression – she had no interest in the stick, and calmed down when I took it away. Reintroduction of the stick after she watched her companions enjoying themselves made no difference.

She clearly – and uncharacteristically – wanted nothing to do with that treat.

Our two cents

When considering natural chews for your four legged companions, remember that it’s not all about the price – or how cute or fancy the product looks. Your furball isn’t going to care what it looks like, but what it tastes like.

Bully sticks are a natural chew, and definitely should be chosen over commercially processed rawhide.

As with any other chew, toy, or new food, you should pay attention to your canine while they are engaged with the sticks – especially when first introduced.

Chewies are a great way to occupy your pup, but you should always pay attention to their chewing habits, especially when introducing them to bully sticks for the first time.

Summing it up

There are still many inequalities for women to overcome, and one that directly has impacted me is the fact that men hold over 70% of jobs in the music industry.

Music is something that has become deeply intertwined with the Internet, with resources such as Spotify, SoundCloud and Pandora. The music industry itself is also very Internet-based and the surrounding culture heavily relies on social media like Facebook. Music industry relations are very informal and most people just use their Facebook profiles, emails and texts to conduct business. This being the case, it is pretty much the perfect situation for online feminist intervention. Many other industries, like the science and technology industries, are also male-dominated and could potentially benefit from groups like Nap Girls and Women in Music, where women work together to reach the common goals of success and support.

Women in Music and Nap Girls are similar to organizations like Women Who Code and Girl Develop It, which aim to disrupt bro-tech culture.  The world of technology and coding are male-dominated as well, similar to the music industry. Coalitions of women in male-dominated professions are crucial. I’ve spent the last three years working my way up in the music industry and have clearly seen the result of male-dominated cultures and it can be extremely intimidating to face alone, especially when the men are quick to attack an ambitious woman in their workplace by dismissing her advancements as the result of “her boobs” (as they would say).

Being a woman trying to start her own business in the music industry, I am against all odds, and having the access to programs such as Nap Girls and Women in Music makes me feel like I’m not so alone, even though I haven’t become a part of them. Facebook is a great place to get together groups of females to work together and support each other through struggles. Unfortunately, the music industry has a very superficial culture and a lot of the women working in it see each other as competitors instead of as two women with a common goal. It can be really hard to forget that the other women in the music industry are allies when the male-centered culture creates an environment where the woman getting the most attention (rather than doing the most work) wins, so it almost always becomes a social competition.  If more women in the music industry were aware of groups like Nap Girls, they would probably be more likely to want to work together to get women more involved in the music industry. Right now, women make up less than 30% of the music industry and that number won’t go up unless women work together and form coalitions to advance into increasingly powerful roles in the industry.

Female representation in the music industry is crucial, especially because pretty much everybody listens to music. In her TED Talk, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie described the dangers of a single story and lack of representation in media. It’s important for women to be equally represented in mainstream music culture, especially because most famous singers and DJs are men. Unfortunately, behind the scenes, the male-dominated industry creates an environment where it is nearly impossible to “make it” as a female star without also becoming a sex symbol. Female stars like Adele, who is solely appreciated on artistic ability, are extremely rare and even in her case one of the first things people write about her is about her weight. Other women who become as famous as male artists still end up being paid a lot less. If women were more involved in the top of the music industry, there would no longer be a need to have a culture that’s motto is “sex sells” and there wouldn’t be as much pay inequality. Women being involved in the music industry also would quickly waterfall into other types of mass consumed media and there would hopefully be more female representation everywhere.
