this #throwbackthursday is dedicated to how #starbuckssavedmylife. how on march 14th, 2009 the #localartsscene helped me find my tribe. picture it! [sophia's voice] let's revisit #barneyjosephson's #cafesociey as #countbassie and #ellafitzgerald's #teafortwo set the vibe. who knew discourse about the #harlemrenaissance and #thefirstladyofjazz amidst her sweet serenade of #blackcoffee would forever change my life. ten years ago if you told me "#giveofyourselffreely to afford yourself the luxury of doing more of what you love," i would've thought you weren't playing with a full deck. sometimes eye sit back and think to myself: #whatawonderfulworld; if eye have seen further than others it's mainly because i've been #standingontheshouldersofgiants. for years eye have been #walkingwiththeancestors from #congosquare to #senecavillage parading #thearts. would you believe me if eye told you that eye fell off [lost money and friends] and fell on hard times yet at the height of my hardship, when the #depression was crippling, eye rose to answer the call of my young cousin's request. he seemed to somehow think i could #makeitcooltobesmart. #walkwithme... we went to #library after library, offering to provide multigenerational programs and procure funding for additional #libraryprograms; as odd as it seems, we were constantly asked "why do you want to do this for free?" to this day, eye can't see how i was overcome with such conviction. after being shunned from volunteering multiple times while unemployed; i too began to wonder if i was crazy, when the library staff continued to greet our proposals with a look like "are you crazy?" all i knew was volunteering was better than being unemployed at the house going stir crazy; that was until a librarian helped us unlock #themagicofthinkingbig. Peace #blackbookstagram fam, This message is to provide notice that we will no longer be appealing @facebook's constant rejections of our content. Although we have worked tirelessly to present and introduce #blackauthors and #blackillustrators on our @instagram page, we do not have the bandwidth to dispute these item rejections or defend the integrity of our account. Since we've launched @popupstorytime, we've been forced to jump through hoops and constantly prove our content is not illicit. While there appears to be no rhyme or reason behind our #books being flagged other than the fact that we primarily highlight #blackwriters, the frequency and range in which they have been censoring our content has become too much to bear. Either we're appealing a new post or receiving an email regarding the compliance of an old post and none of it makes sense. Our intent has always been to provide a platform for #Blerds to be #seenandheard and to transform #publicspaces into #centersforthearts. Although we have been providing free #communityarts programs since 2009, in 2019 we launched our #popupbookshop and #onlinebookstore to #maketheartsmoreaccessible. Essentially, for the past 13 years we have been a destination for #positiverecreation and #freefamilyfun yet the #facebook and #instagram algorithms do not appear to take that into account.
