genuinely cannot imagine dickriding the watcher guys the way some of you have been. like they made a bad business decision! they alienated their audience! they made jokes about "eating the rich" and then one of their owners turned around and bought a tesla! they said they'd pull all their old content off youtube and then immediately backpedaled and started gaslighting the people who noticed it! they're just guys on the internet, they're not your friends and they are not anti-capitalists. they just want money and they don't care about their primarily young/international/non-wealthy audience.

aftg au where andrew is a burnt out musician who's sick and tired of writing/playing shitty music bc his label says it sells better. he meets one deaf neil josten at some no-name pub on the east coast. he's a little mesmerized by the way neils hair catches in the bar lights and how his eyes track the woman playing bass on stage. andrew offers to buy him a drink and then he offers to blow him. it's a no but at first neil looked at him confused and andrews about to start wondering how someone who looks like that would be confused about an offer like that but then neil asks him to write his question down. he does. (there's something humbling about writing a proposition down). neil says no but they trade notes back and forth until the line of indie artists waiting their turn for the stage dwindled into nothing. the last thing andrew writes is his phone number. they talk, well, they text. neil doesn't know him, not the way magazine covers and top 40 radio hits know him. to neil, andrew minyard is just a guy that plays the drums and occasionally writes lyrics. one day, when he asks why neil loves watching him play his drums so much, why he goes to indie night at the pub when he can't hear the words they sing, neil tells him that he likes the thumping in the ground. it steadies him, calms him down as if his ear was pressed to someone's heart. he likes the way the artists lose themselves to their music in a way so obvious. its with neil peering into andrew's grand piano, his eyes watching the hammers pop, that he remembers why he started making music in the first place and for the first time in months he actually wants to compose something

PSA to printed zine makers
As a 37 year old who's been running a sole proprietorship for the last 10+ years, I just want everyone who is planning to run a fandom project that involves accepting money for printing & shipping costs to know that you're actually running a small business and you need to plan for taxes. It doesn't matter if you don't make any profit: that is business income and the IRS will see it as such if you get audited.
If you only take enough money in to cover the cost of printing & shipping then you can write that off as a business expense and probably not pay taxes on it, But in order for that to fly you actually have to do business accounting, especially if you're doing it at scale. Like, you can probably skate by without reporting a $500 project; I absolutely would not fucking risk it with a $5000 project.
Back when I was producing shows there were years when I was where I made $20k in ticket sales only to turn around and immediately pay $18k to my performers. I only made $2k for myself, but I had to report the entire $20k, because it was ALL INCOME. (I only paid taxes on the $2000, because that's how writing off expenses works!)
Yeah this is boring grownup shit and I'm getting my boring grownup fingers all over your fun fandom, but boring grownups doing boring grownup things are the reason fandom spaces exist at all (paying for servers is deeply boring), and I'm way more fun than an audit

(many of) the guys who get hoodwinked by nfts and crypto rugpulls and virtual real estate etc are being victimized by the same strategies used by cult and MLM recruiters but laser-targeted to the class of extremely dissociated business boys who have been raised in climate controlled terrariums since they were IVF pipetted into their surrogates by parents who would frown and shake their heads every time any sort of non-alienated labor or craftwork was mentioned in the presence of their child, to denote disapproval of "impractical" skills. these guys are very rich, do not have social skills except for "networking", are borderline illiterate, and inevitably have some sort of disastrous parasocial emotional affair with a sex worker in their 50s. the ones who are not sociopaths by the clinical definition are pathetically lonely and the rugpull offers a form of instant ingroup buy-in which lasts for as long as the business boy chooses to HODL.
is it their fault/do they deserve it/should we feel sorry for them? complicated series of questions. materially i think it's a waste of time to feel sorry for someone who is actively gentrifying and paywalling and enshittifying as we speak, however, there is maybe something to be said for leftists considering some kind of active outreach to victims of these scams as a form of coalition-building, but im always thinking something like this and i have yet to run into an actual real world example of "my whole life i hated hippies and then one day, one reached out and saved me, so i have decided to retire from making money by being evil" so i think i'm probably wrong and the only answer is actually just full scale class war and also probably putting a lot more leftist resources into running scams targeting the business boys.

hey actually i do feel like i should make this post because people are so often surprised when I mention that my instagram is monetized. any business account (you can tell that it's a business account because the bio has a subtitle labeling the type of business they are) that has over 10k followers on instagram is eligible for reels monetization and any account with over 15k is eligible for post monetization. There is no requirement to disclose whether or not any given post is monetized, and every post is monetized by default when you opt-in to monetization. be cognizant of what you see and what you like. the payout system is engagement-based and rewards ragebait and engagement farming. and if you are a small artist or content creator, DO NOT let large business accounts repost your work without compensation. they are making money off of you and hoping you won't notice.

Pulling this because I don't want to get into arguing about AI with a stranger, but I do think it's very funny to see Tim Burton upset about having his style imitated. "It's nothing like when I, a human, have an entirely derivative and unoriginal style - first of all, no robot could ever reproduce my human racism" oh no Tim, the machines are racist too, don't worry.
