PREVIEW 

Bakugou watches you intently sitting next to him in the passenger's seat of his car, the rain pitter-pattering outside, creating a loud cacophony of endless noise.

Your sweet voice nearly gets swept up with the rain. “I don’t understand, Katsuki. I just don’t understand you.”

You won't look at him. Your beautiful, doe-like brown eyes are staring somewhere else outside the windshield, the rain reflecting back in those pools of bewilderment and sorrow that Bakugou could get lost in forever.

'I know, baby,' he thinks, his own sorrow and regret threatening to swallow him whole. 'I wish I could tell you everything. Wish I could make you understand...'

But making you understand would also mean he would have to tell you and show you everything about him, and he dreads that. Because everyone he has ever shown the him behind the designer suits, fancy cars, laser red stares, and cool exterior has abandoned him. Broken his heart. Taken his affection and stomped on it.

He is afraid of what will happen if he does show you who he is because he has no idea what you'll do if he does. That is the reason he separated from you-to leave you before you left him. To save himself the heartbreak and you the horror of seeing that he is nothing like the man you thought he was.

It doesn't make it any better than you're so sweet. So kind. So different from the rest. The temptation to show you everything-the blood, the pain, the scars, the mistakes, the regrets-frightens him so.

"I'm sorry" is all he can say to you now, sitting awkwardly in the driver's seat, his hands gripping the steering wheel for dear life to avoid trembling. He doesn't want to appear weak with you, his dear, precious little singer.

It is so lame, so trivial, but it is all he can muster to tell you now despite the brown liquor fogging his sense of rationality and his filter. He wants so much to tell you how much he misses you.

How he cannot fall asleep without envisioning your face next to him.

How he hasn't washed his pillow since the last time you slept on it just to smell your perfume on it.

How there has been no other woman in his bed or in his arms since you departed.

But he keeps it all back...for now. You look up at him now, turning away from the raindrops to finally put those pretty eyes on him. He nearly swallows his tongue at your beauty-your creamy skin that contrasts his; your baby face and dimples; your curly black hair made even curlier from the rain. The urge to kiss you lingers in the air.

"I don't get it," you say aloud, frustration and confusion evident in your tone and the crease in your brow. "What do you want?"

Bakugou blinks at you, not counting on the question being asked. It should be so easy to reply to, but he can't. Because if he says "you" then he will be forced to tell you the real reason why he ended your relationship: because he is afraid.

The silence must frustrate you more because your cute little lips purse, something you do when you're irritated. "What do you want, Katsuki?" you ask again, your frustration growing.

Finally, Bakugou relaxes his hold on the steering wheel and replaces it with your small, warm hands. You stare at his bigger, calloused, inked ones interlaced with yours as if you can't believe he is touching you. "I want you happy," he answers, true and genuine. "Even if it isn't with me, Y/N. I need you to be happy."

And despite the utter anguish that his response brings, despite the fact that he would be heartbroken if you were to end up with that stupid extra "Todoroki" or some other chump, if you were to be happier than you were with him, that would be the answer to his nightly prayers.

But he would also be lying if he said that he wouldn't be filled with envy for the rest of his days and dying to take the spot of the other man in your arms.

MISTAKEN IDENTITY

A/N: I'm gonna warn you ahead of time, this is gonna be unhinged as fuck. Just stay with me ok. There's not enough fics about Noah Wyle characters (I was the bitch complaining about it like three days ago), so I'm gonna start mashing shit together so I can enjoy them all.

Very "Marvel What If?" ish, if that makes sense. So, here we go.

Aliens took over the world while John Carter was working as an ER attending at County General and this all happened while his friend from residency, Jack Abbot, came to visit him between deployments, and he meets you but you confuse him for your husband Tom Mason? [aka I’m taking John Carter and shoving him into the Falling Skies universe, but because I know The Pitt better than ER I’m mixing up the staff at County General with Pitt characters] [aka aka I saw a pictures of Noah Wyle and Shawn Hatosy in an apocalypse AU and it altered my DNA]

The world ended.

It happened suddenly, without warning, and it came from the sky. The fucking sky. Carter never spent a lot of time wondering how the world would end. If someone had forced him to guess though, aliens would’ve been very, very low on the list. Thinking back, he was pretty sure the staff once held a bet about the end of the world. Somebody had bet on aliens, but Carter couldn’t remember who. Maybe Jerry? Whoever it was earned a hell of a pretty penny.

Not that money mattered anymore.

Carter peered around the tipped over car he was hiding behind. There wasn’t any motion he could see, but there was still skittering in the distance. Too close for comfort. He locked his jaw and rechecked his weapon. He still hadn’t gotten used to the weight of a gun in his hands. Prior to the end of the fucking world, he had never held one before. A shotgun for skeet shooting, sure, but this was different.

The sound of steps grew more pronounced. Carter stiffened where he sat. Every muscle freezing as his breath caught in his throat. He had only gone head-to-head with the aliens a few times. Hell, he could count the encounters on one hand. Obviously, Carter considered himself lucky to be able to claim that, but the doctor in him was still curious. The anatomy alone was so unusual. A head that reminded him of a sea creature, maybe a squid, a torso similar to humans with only two arms, but connected to six legs with tripod-like feet.

Roaches. Skitters. Cooties. They had all sorts of names. Some more clever than others.

Shuffling became more pronounced, only a few feet away, and Carter peered around the car once more, this time with his gun raised and ready. His aim landed on Abbot who huffed in response. His friend looked worse for wear. His wavy, brown hair messier than usual and his features still showcased the highlights from the last brawl he was in—a busted lower lip and dark bruising under his right eye. Unlike himself, Abbot seemed built for this new world. It was probably his recent deployment overseas as a combat medic. Carter counted his blessings that the end of the world came when Abbot was back in the states visiting him on leave.

“You know how pissed I’d be if you fucking shot me?” Abbot snorted. Carter tucked the pistol back into its holster and rose to his full height as Abbot passed him. “You turned on your safety, right?”

“Course I did.” Carter replied. Behind his friend’s back, he checked his gun and flipped the safety when he realized it was off. “What’d you find?”

“Nothing good. Place was ransacked of any useful supplies. Almost ran into a couple of scabs though a few blocks down.” Scabs, or scabies, were what their little group had gotten accustomed to calling the creatures which was less creative and more a testament to their science focused minds. “Fuckers are getting closer and closer to us.”

Fuckers was their other name for the creatures—less creative or scientific and more a testament to their rage.

“We’re running out of everything other than medical supplies.” Carter commented as he caught up to match Abbot’s stride. The upside of making base in the ER was it left most of the hospital to be scoured. Carter would never complain about their stash of medicine, but he’d be lying if he said he wouldn’t trade an absurd amount of it for a hot, well-cooked meal. God, he was starting to miss the cafeteria food at this point. “Any ideas for that?”

“We can make the med students eat gauze.” Abbot offered, unhelpful. “Save us three shares right there.”

“You’re just pissed Whitaker stepped on your prosthetic this morning.”

“I can’t exactly take it to get fixed if he fucks it up.”

“He apologized.” Carter chuckled, but Abbot just huffed. “C’mon. You can’t stay mad at him. He looks like a kicked puppy.”

“More like the ghost of some Victorian era child that drowned at sea.”

Carter laughed but quickly bit back the sound knowing it wasn’t safe to make so much noise. He shook his head with a small grin. “The point is, you should cut the kid some slack.”

“I didn’t kill him this morning, did I?” Abbot retaliated with a scoff.

They reached the mouth of the alley that would take them to the back of County General’s ER. It was blocked off by a couple dumpsters, a car, and a few other bulky items they had been able to push together. The other entrance into the ER had been barricaded closed entirely. An attempt to control access to their makeshift camp.

“Heya, docs. Please tell me you’re bringing lunch.” Olsen called out from where he sat on watch.

Abbot snorted, “Does it look like I’m carrying supplies?”

Olsen let out a low whistle as Abbot slid past the barrier and down the alley. He met Carter’s eyes, “He’s in a mood.”

“That’s his baseline.” Carter replied. He paused, “Hey, who bet on aliens for that end of the world pool? Was it Jerry?”

“Nah, Jerry bet on mole people.” Olsen hummed. “I don’t remember who put money down on aliens. I guessed asteroid. Just take us all fuckin’ out.” He snapped his fingers. “Like that.”

Carter gave him a pat on the shoulder before heading in. Maybe it would’ve been better if whatever apocalyptic disaster had just ended humanity. It was a grim thought, but everything was grim these days. Death wasn’t new to Carter. That’s what he told himself.

Every time they lost someone, he’d try to pretend it was just another work day—just another patient. But, it wasn’t. The faces he was losing were ones he knew. Ones he loved. Just last week they lost Julie. She worked in med-surg. Carter hadn’t met her until the world ended.

Julie was sweet. Funny. No local family, but a sister who lived in upstate New York, and she had been studying and applying to move to the ICU. It was a stray bullet that had taken her. Not even fighting against the scabs. It had been a pair of guys, trying to rob a small group of them as they were out scouting, and it had gone badly.

They had enough time to bring her back to County General. Carter worked on her for over an hour. It hadn’t been enough.

Death was still death, but Carter was getting worse at pretending like it didn’t fucking ruin him.

“Carter!”

As he passed what used to be the physician lounge, McKay stepped out to grab his attention. He turned to greet his second-year resident. Though, none of them were his residents anymore he supposed. The red head motioned for him to walk with her.

“Everything alright?” He asked.

“Yeah, but while you were gone we picked up someone new.”

Carter furrowed his brow, “New?” Seven months ago they were actively looking for strangers to save. That had stopped about two months back when it burned them—bad. “Who went out—”

“No one went out.” McKay shook her head. “She came here. Limped up to the barrier. We’re thinking it’s a high ankle sprain. I wrapped it up, gave her some Percocet, and a liter of LR.” Carter couldn’t help but give a soft chuckle as McKay inadvertently gave him a patient check out. She seemed to catch herself and shook her head. “Sorry, anyways, she said she was in Montana when everything went to shit.”

Carter’s eyes widened, “Montana??”

“Yeah, and she’s making her way to Boston. Trying to, at least.”

“Jesus Christ.”

McKay was leading him back to one of the trauma rooms. Through the doors' windows he could see a woman lying on the bed. Carter ran a hand through his hair and stopped outside.

“She’s alone?”

“As far as we can tell.” McKay hesitated with her hand on the door. “She says she’s alone, and we haven’t noticed anyone lingering around outside.”

Carter blew out a breath and nodded once. McKay pushed the door open and went in first. He followed a step behind her. As he did, you sat up on the bed—attached to an IV pole with a bag of LR that was nearly empty. As McKay had said, your ankle was wrapped up and based on your sluggish movement it had been a higher dose of Percocet.

Locking eyes with him, he heard you suck in a sharp breath. Carter didn’t get a chance to say a word. You leapt off the bed, nearly toppling to the ground with heavy and injured limbs, and he watched in shock as you ripped the IV from your arm. McKay cried out and rushed over to help you, but you shoved past her and made a beeline to him. Carter grunted when your body slammed into his—arms locked tightly around his neck. He had no choice but to wrap his own arms around your body to keep you from slumping to the floor.

Carter opened his mouth, to question you or McKay or the universe itself, but you pulled your head back just enough to roughly press your lips to his. His eyes widened as your warm, chapped lips slotted against his. The kiss lasted only a few seconds. Not long enough for Carter to understand or appreciate the moment of softness.

You pulled back to stare at him. Pretty eyes clouded with confusion as the exhaustion was growing more clear on your features.

“Uh, hi.” Carter breathed, still holding you.

Exhaustion crumpled into heartbreak, and he was alarmed at the agony taking hold as tears collected at your waterline. You shook your head and mumbled, voice broken and pained, “You’re not Tom.”

I've seen an argument put forth that Miraculous obviously favors Adrien because it prioritizes his feelings over Marinette's. Like in Glaciator and Frozer, the show portrays Ladybug's rejection as a tragedy for Adrien and makes Ladybug seem like a villain for rejecting him, thereby putting his sadness over her right to reject him. What do you think of this?

LOL. The Maripologists are so desperate to accuse Adrien’s writing of carrying the flaws Marinette’s does that their evidence consists of two whole-ass episodes from season 2, aka, the era where these two were still supposedly treated as equals, when Marinette got twice that in terms of episodes dedicated to her romantic feelings and how badly she’s feeling about Adrien not dating her. Season two was actually very good about taking other people’s thoughts and feelings into account, so no wonder Maripologists view that season as some kind of Marinette hate fest. I bet they think ‘Evolution’ makes season 5 about Adrien because he got to use an additional Miraculous for once and because he was allowed to be upset at the same time as Marinette for once instead of being expected to comfort her for once. Like, one or two instances of something isn't a pattern.

Also, how convenient that they completely ignore how ‘Glaciator’ gives equal if not more focus to Marinette’s feelings. Because, like, Marinette not returning Cat Noir’s feelings makes her upset too. The person you’re in love with telling you she doesn't love you back is a tragedy, and so is finally having someone to love you unconditionally but you can't give the same back. What happens in ‘Glaciator’ and ‘Frozer’ is tragic, and the only reason the Maripologists whine about the show treating it as such is their hateboner for Adrien/Cat Noir. Like, you need to hold a lot of spite towards a character to whine about something genuinely sad happening to a character being treated as something genuinely sad. Like, even I give the show concessions when Marinette cries about actual problems and I’m the coiner of the “Marinette is upsette” phrase to describe the writers making a whole lot out of nothing when it comes to Marinette’s feelings being hurt.

Basically, Cat Noir is reasonably and understandably upset that the girl he genuinely loves doesn’t love him back, and Marinette is reasonably and understandably upset that she can’t love him back. No wonder Maripologists think ‘Glaciator’ is wronging Marinette, because Marinette being upset is the same thing as Marinette being “punished” in their eyes, but, like, in the actual episodes, it’s never framed as being her fault. Cat Noir’s feelings are not more important than Marinette’s right to reject him. In fact, in ‘Frozer’, she calls him out on his attitude before he does the right thing and takes some distance to cool off. In addition, Cat Noir often assures her that her friendship is enough, something Marinette has never told Adrien, despite supposedly being oh-so-selfless

Also, like, further on the whole “Cat Noir's feelings mattering for once is preferential treatment” claim: having just a bit of empathy towards someone other than the main lead counts as preferential treatment to Maripologists. They have so insanely high standards to how gently Marinette should be treated by the writing before she stops being a victim to them, it's impossible to write as a story. Marinette is never made to comfort Adrien in these situations, Adrien deals with his own shit and then we’re back to business as usual. She isn’t expected to do anything by Cat Noir or the writers. In the reverse situation, where Marinette is crying and hounding Cat Noir for affection, he is made to coddle her and kiss her and ignore his own boundaries to make her feel better. Marinette is the only character who is shown to be in the right when she makes her problems other people's problem.

Any way the show supposedly “favors” Adrien, Marinette has received twice as much at least. That’s what I think.

Family Dynamics:

Bucky is the overworked and tired mother who’s main job is just to make sure all his children are fed and don’t kill each other.

Alexei is the fun dad, who is sometimes irresponsible but is always there when you need him and serious when it’s required.

John is the annoying older brother that pretends he hates his siblings (and his siblings pretend to hate him) but is also beats up anyone who talks shit about his siblings. He’s the older brother that will stop on the way home to buy ice cream as long as everyone agrees not to tell the parents.

Ava is the older-middle sister who is most well known for her rebellious attitude. The sister that sneaks out a lot and is often chastised for her bad attitude, but she mainly uses bad attitude as a cover for her depression and overall bad mental health.

Yelena is the youngest sister who is often overlooked. Shes the favourite daughter and is always listening to everyone else. Shes the most likely to be open about her feelings. She plays a lot of pranks but never seems to get into trouble for them. Always insists on movie nights and game nights.

Bob is the youngest sibling that no one hates, he’s always helping around the house but mainly keeps to himself. He spends most of his time with Yelena but manages to also spend time with his other siblings too. He finds a way to bond with everyone. he gets tired easily and it’s not uncommon for him to fall asleep on top of one (or multiple) of the others during movie nights.

really sweet guy but has mental health issues that combined with their super powers that they got from a super soilder serum gone wrong, means they are nearly unbeatable unless they are calmed down by the others on their team.

the heart of the team that’s also a defective red room assassin. (Also the one who’s best at calming down the unbeatable angry guy)

Clint Barton- Ava Starr

extremely underrated and underdeveloped in their first team up movies The sassy former sheild agent that always comes back to help the team when it would definitely be in their better interest not to.

Thor Odinson- Alexei Shoskatov

Slightly out of place, yelling, comedic relief character that also has extremely emotionally impactful and serious character moments.

Phil Coulson- Antonia Drekov Killed early on in the film who’s death helps spur on the others.

dazai obviously listens to jokey stuff to be disturbing (suicide song). i do think the stuff he listens to to be annoying he does genuinely enjoy though, such is often the nature of dazais lies. for the most part i dont actually think hes very picky about it. listens to anything if its on, will judge other peoples taste despite not really having his own😭 i can imagine a slight preference for instrumental when alone if only bc mori seems like a classical music guy and i imagine that rubbed off a bit. also real to me that he intentionally got into various bands chuuya was into and did a lot of 'i actually like this more than you. youre a fake fan bc you dont know the bass guitarist pissed himself during the recording of this track and they kept it in' and such like when they were teens just for the purposes of pissing him off.

for the rest of them. the akutagawas are into old school goth music that sounds kind of silly unless youre also into it, like some real 'she liiikes the darkkkk' type shit😭 atsushi has the worlds most extensive taste ever. comes out of that fuckass orphanage having heard like 3 songs in his life and has zero taste. thinks every song is the best song hes heard. higuchi listens to the most pop pop to ever pop and then just a lot of breakup songs that she imagines dramatic scenarios to. sat in her car looking out the rainy window and everything. kyouka probably says something like 'the only music ive heard is the screams of the 35 people who i was forced to murder' and you go okay kyouka would you like to listen to this silly pop song. look heres the band wearing bunny costumes. and she becomes their no.1 fan <3 yosano exclusively listens to female artists, says she cant listen to male singers bc their voices annoy her (hashtag my favourite misandrist) she prefers stuff with a little edge but can get down to some real basic girl shit for messy club going. in another life shes in the trenches defending her favs on twitter, doxxing people about it and all. tachihara is obsessed with saying hes 'discovered' an artist and keeps trying to get the black lizard on to some shitty soundcloud shit where 90% of the song is just a repeating producer tag. hirotsu insists the only music he listens to is live music in a smoky bar, but is in fact secretly hooked on one of higuchi's sadgirl breakup songs. kunikida googles 'music to better my health' and listens to the first thing that comes up. fukuzawa says he listens to classical to focus on his work and sometimes he does but usually hes got earphones in and hes listening to a cat choir.

Talking about the actual dialogue for a second- trying not to get too carried away only focusing on the visuals.

Im very concerned we’re going to have a moment with the power going out, Papyrus and Flowey being stuck without the elevator just like Alphys and Wingdings were. Some chicanery is gonna happen comparing and contrasting how they handle that compared to the 2 scientists. Ofc thats a lot of speculation- But I cant help but feel like the talk about “the energy hopfully lasting long enough” is leading up to something….not fun.

Maybe what they do down here is a weird time mumbo jumbo that is important to make what happens in the past- happen. Maybe thats why Gaster is watching them…

thanks!! i still recall that this ship came mostly by accident to me, and honestly it was a damn fortunate accident at that because they work AMAZINGLY together. i really do like picking ships by virtue of personality and how well those personalities would mesh together, and don't like ships where that isn't directly considered, which, to be fair, i did at first think the two would probably dislike or hate each other! but i ended up thinking about it more and how the two might actually interact, and, honestly? the way they come off to me has always been that, if they can just get over that initial hump, they're WONDERFUL for each other.

i just like the way they parallel each other. both clinging to what they were told they are for their entire lives, something given to them by family and whom they had little choice in, but which they threw themselves into with a passion simply because they had nothing else they thought they could be. both with nasty, tangled histories, upholding systems which exist to eat the world and themselves simply serving as the last victims of it, neither able to fully question their role in it due to how much has been invested, how much would be lost if they had to put it aside. both with ringing alarm bells of psychological distress of all of this, that they cannot hear because they were never taught they were alarm bells, seeking out something that's close enough to what they were told they're supposed to be but without the teeth, without the fear, without the alarm bells. both rejected by their own systems by virtue of some flaw that isn't really a flaw, a fault that has marked them as unable to live up to their own myths. both only really able to come to any terms about all of this when they have other people, people who aren't a part of that system, people who they can depend on and trust, to start pointing it out and offering alternatives.

it's good! i like when two characters' journeys are really one journey, one path together, when they're in the same boat and just haven't realized it yet. i like it when they realize it, when they can finally start talking about it, finding solidarity in, yeah, actually, this IS bullshit, and why would someone do that to them. i like it when they're a conversation with each other, a mirror through which the other can be dismantled and picked apart and seen for what it is, when both act to lay the other out plain, when only the both of them can see the other for who they truly are.

and i like when it gives characters that are all high octane and presence and tension, just some downtime together. i like it when they can finally take off all that they drape themselves in, and just sit there together, vulnerable and exposed. i like how much they talk and have to say to each other, but i like how much they don't talk to each other as well, how much they can just exist in the silence together because the words aren't necessary. i like it when two characters being vulnerable with each other first feels like strangulation, and then, release.

as someone who isnt super excited for sotm for certain reasons I am really glad that like. it's clear that since ruin theyve been setting up for carnival and sotm IS carnival. so now that carnival is finally coming out, afterwards theyll be moving on to other plotlines since the main villain stuff is sorted out

I'm just rlly happy to finally see a clear direction for how the story is gonna be playing out with like "okay these games were leading up to this so after this will be open possibilites" instead of like. absolutely no info about each upcoming game and being left guessing before it releases and just having to wait and see what's in it and if anything you're looking forward to will be in it

it feels like they have a plan and a solid direction for what they're trying to do and after carnival releases thatll be all that buildup coming to fruition. & we already know from the Scott interview that theres another release 'beyond sotm' that's 'super exciting' so maybe thatll be focusing on another big currently untouched (which is basically all of them) plotline, or even the big campaign game that dawko has been calling security breach 2

I need to reread the comics again to have specific arguments/evidence for this, but like

I feel a bit like I could've been sympathetic to the way other Cybertronian colonies view Cybertron, if it weren't for the fact that at least several of them (as in, ones that get notable dialogue/screen time) are so low-key self-righteous?

Like, idk... there's a lot of criticism of Cybertronians because they're so "warlike" and how their obsession with violence and vengeance is just dragging the whole galaxy down with them, but uh. The Autobot-Decepticon war was basically a product of societal ills bubbling over for like 6 million years beforehand and then finally boiling over into a 4 million year war that lasted as long as it did because the people involved had immense social/psychological trauma from being "raised" in an oppressive society.

So when the colonists come in being all 'omg you people are so violent and uncivilized why don't you just like, stop fighting' it kind of pissed me off a little bit as a reader/person like. Idk the colonists really came into this society of people full of massive amounts of trauma where even before the war society was super oppressive and no one has any experience of living "normal" lives unaffected by violence and bigotry. And the colonists were like "ummm wow why don't you guys just??? stop fighting???." Like idk it wasn't EVERY SINGLE MOMENT, in fact I think that when it was played for laughs it's quite a funny "fridge horror" type element. It was just annoying because like.... IDK???? It's just really annoying to watch a bunch of people who lived relatively sheltered lives on their own planets come to a different planet full of traumatized people and be like "omg why are you people so fucked up" IDK BRO MAYBE BECAUSE THEIR SOCIETY WAS OPPRESSIVE AND THEY LIVED THROUGH A LIFELONG WAR???

It also doesn't help that the colonies were literally founded based on imperialism and conquest so like, it's fucking rich to hear colonists scolding Cybertronians for their violence ruining the whole galaxy while literally sitting on planets that their Primes colonized from others. The hypocrisy of this is briefly mentioned in Unicron (literally the FINAL STORY OF THE SERIES) but like, that's basically the only time Cybertronian characters are given a reprieve of sympathy from other characters in universe and it's so tiresome.

I've talked to other people who didn't like the colonists and thought they basically (narratively speaking) existed just to shit on the existing characters, and it's actually really easy for me to sympathize with/outright agree with that assessment of the story considering how much of exRID/OP seems to be preoccupied with "Cybertron/the Primes/Optimus sucks" with very few reprieves for anything positive happening and even fewer chances for characters to get to explain themselves and experience a little bit of justice? Like, as the audience, it's just very frustrating to see the characters you spent hundreds of issues keeping up with get shit on by a bunch of "literally-who"s and then not really get a chance to ever defend themselves, either by literally defending themselves in conversation or having some sort of narrative thing happening that vindicates them at least symbolically
