Christians have a glory and a beauty and a heavenly wealth which is beyond words, and it is won with pains, and sweat, and trials, and many conflicts, and all by the grace of God.

Thinking about his dark materials and the part where they find that one child who's lost his daemon and all he's got is a piece of dried fish he's clinging to and nobody really cares for him or remember him, and when they find him nobody even wants to touch him because he has no daemon but that's a child!! A child missing a part of his soul!!! A part of his soul was cut off and all he has is a piece of fish and nobody wants to touch him and then he dies!! And then they try to take the piece of fish away from him, the piece of fish he's holding onto as some resemblances of his soul!!!
10 year old me read that and something fundamentally changed within me I think about him all the time

You've somehow found yourself in the Fox-Like Marauder's flat above a bookshop. She's god knows where right now, maybe with that zee-captain. You could steal something, and maybe even get away with it.

Tragically misguided penitents...
Saint Assepsumas thought he could rid himself of sin through self-inflicted pain, and he wore so many chains that he had to crawl around on his hands and knees. Makarios the Younger sat naked in a swamp for six months, until mosquito bites made him look like a victim of leprosy. Saint Marin spent eleven years in a hollowed-out tree. Great contributions to society.
Agnes de Roucher was the only daughter of one of the wealthiest merchants in Paris, and all the neighborhood admired her beauty and virtue. Her father died, leaving her his entire estate. She determined to become a recluse and spend the remainder of her days in a narrow cell built within the wall of a church. The bishop of Paris, attended by his chaplains and the canons of Notre Dame, entered the cell and celebrated a pontifical mass. Then, after the poor thing had bidden adieu to her friends and relations, Agnes ordered the masons to fill up the opening except for a small hole so she could watch and hear the offices of the church. She was eighteen when she went in and died at age eighty, never having come out. In all that time, no one ever told her Jesus was the key to redemption. God help such mistaken piety.

The Golden Compass, Chapter 13 - Fencing
(THIS PROJECT IS SPOILER FREE! No spoilers past the chapter you click on. Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index for His Dark Materials, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
In which we get some curious details.
Lyra's first impulse is to run, or be sick. You can't just be a person with no daemon here, even if your daemon curls up in your hood or pocket they're still there with you. This is something Wrong on a fundamental level.(1)
The boy, Tony Makarios, asks if Lyra has his daemon, Ratter. She can hardly even begin to tell him no, and she has to step outside to breathe. When she's had a silent moment with Pan, she calls Tony out. He's dressed warmly, and still clutching the dried fish. The villager says they'll have to pay for the fish, but Lyra argues they're taking the child away, that's payment enough.
Lyra and Tony get up on Iorek's back, and Lyra's compassion wins out over her revulsion, so she hugs Tony to keep him up safely. When they get back to the gyptians, she tells them what happened to him, what the Gobblers are doing to kids. The men are all as terrified as the villagers were, but Iorek chides them: how dare they show less courage than Lyra has this night. John Faa agrees, and everyone comes together to help the children, warm them, and let them sleep.
In the morning, Lyra tells Farder Coram how her interpretation of the alethiometer's message was wrong, when it kept saying bird and not bird, it meant no daemon. Farder Coram breaks the news to her that Tony Makarios died about an hour ago, but Lyra still did a very brave thing,(2) and they know what the Gobblers are doing which is more than they knew before. John Faa is building up a fire to cremate him, since they can't get a hole in the frozen ground.
He tells Lyra she should eat, but Lyra wants to see Tony's body. She realizes the bit of fish he'd been clinging to is gone, and she gets furious, demanding to know who took it. One of the gyptians admits, he took it, and gave it to his sledge dogs, thinking it was just what Tony had been eating. Lyra retrieves a gold coin, and borrows the man's knife to cut the name "Ratter" into it, hoping that's good enough for Tony's spirit as it was for Jordan's scholars.
Back at Farder Coram's fire, they discuss the witch migration, and the soup starts to melt the chill in Lyra's heart. She watches the cremation, and then they move out. On the way, she asks Farder Coram about the spy fly. He says it's soldered shut at the bottom of the kit bag he points to, but Lyra needn't worry. While he's distracted, though, she gets out the tin, and asks Iorek to do something, since he's so good with metal. He makes a biscuit tin lid into a second and third tin, one the same size as the smokeleaf tin and one slightly bigger to fit some padding to dull the noise. The latter also happens to be the same size as the alethiometer.(3)
Lyra asks Iorek if he gets lonely not having a daemon, but he doesn't have context to know if that's being lonely, as he's never had one. She asks him more about the Svalbard bears, but he was outcast for killing another bear, so he doesn't like to talk about them. Lyra asks more about his act, and he says he killed in anger, and was stripped of his title and wealth and original armour for it. Lyra compares that to her father's situation after she was born.
They keep talking, and eventually Iorek opens up more detail about the bears. He tells her the current king of Svalbard is Iofur Raknison, which Lyra recalls hearing somewhere before. Shortly, she follows the memory back to Jordan's Retiring Room, listening to Lord Asriel.
Lyra asks if the bears could be defeated, and Iorek says she's seen his armour, so here are his weapons: his claws as long and sharp as knives, and his paw pads thick and horned with callus. He can crush a seal's skull in one blow.
As for trickery, he has Lyra try to fence with him with a stick, but he's too fast and dodges or swipes away the stick before it touches him every time. Finally she says she bets he could catch bullets, and Iorek says simply that bears can still see in a way humans have forgotten, in the same way Lyra does with the alethiometer. She's dismissive, but he says adults can't read it intuitively like she can, so it is much the same. She wonders if she'll forget how to do it when she's an adult.
Lyra returns to Farder Coram's tent and puts the empty tin back in his pack, keeping the spy fly for herself in the same bag as the alethiometer.
At the next stopping point, the plan is for Lee to inflate his balloon and spy from the air. Lyra is forbidden from going with him, but pesters him with questions to make up for it. How does he fill the balloon (various ways), how many can it hold (six), could he take Iorek with his armour (yes, and he has).
She also asks him about the holes Tartars put in people's heads, and is shocked to learn that they do it to themselves, on purpose.(4) She asks if he knows about Stanislaus Grumman, and he does, actually, and he knows he'd had it done as part of his initiation into the Tartars. Lyra asks if they would still have killed him if they'd made him one of them, since she saw the head Asriel brought to Jordan. Lee suggests it might not have been Grumman's head, Asriel might have been misleading them. Lyra admits he was asking for funding, and Lee adds that the shock factor might have helped him get it. Besides, Tartars scalp their enemies, and he was one of their own.
Lyra turned that over in her mind as they drove on. There were wide currents full of meaning flowing fast around her; the Gobblers and their cruelty, their fear of Dust, the city in the Aurora, her father in Svalbard, her mother.… And where was she? The alethiometer, the witches flying northward. And poor little Tony Makarios; and the clockwork spy-fly; and Iorek Byrnison’s uncanny fencing … She fell asleep. And every hour they drew closer to Bolvangar.
=====
(1) Is there anything you'd consider to be that kind of wrong to see? I don't have a lot of the social taboos (probably should've been a sign much sooner that I wasn't neurotypical tbh) so I don't think I've felt that kind of horrific innate revulsion at anything. (2) And not only that, she made his last hours as comfortable as they could be. She showed him as much kindness as she could, and she and Iorek made sure the boy was treated with care from the adults, too. (3) Here's where we put the Mickey meme, "That's a surprise tool that will help us later". (4) Good old trepanation.

Queen..... do you.... have more....... percy babies........ 🤤👹👹👹👹
I'M STILL WORKING ON IT!!!! i DO have plans to release a separate book about percy babies with the yans (like waaaaay into the future), but rn all i got are some names and pics 😂😂
so first off, the names are from the old ask i got, i'm just reusing them cuz i'm lazy LMAO (here) and obviously, i'm gonna use this beelcy baby cuz he's PERFECT for a beelcy child (here)
the issues of making future babies is that it's so hard for me to let go of the fact that human genetics DON'T exist for gods. i keep looking around for pics that are a perfect "blend" of percy + yan when it shouldn't even matter. they're GODS they don't need to have the same features as their parents, but i keep FORGETTING THAT 👹👹👹👹
like, poseidon's blonde and blue eyed, hades has purple eyes and silver hair, zeus is blonde, and then adamas has GREEN FUCKING SKIN and FIRETRUCK RED HAIR. they're brothers and they look NOTHING alike cuz again, genetics don't exist for them 😭😭😭😭
but anyway, the percy babies!
first up is the beelcy baby i showed you guys before. i'm naming him luke LMAO:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(from the manga "shinigami no hanayome". i still don't know this guy's name cuz the chapter he was introduced in has yet to be translated)
now here's the percades baby. i'm reusing the name "thalassus" from that one old post up above^:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(hades from orochi 4. i picked him solely cuz of the vine designs on his skin, just like his daddy!)
for perpollo, i managed to find 3 lol. makarios for the pink dude and no name yet for the girl and blonde guy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the pink dude's chong ming and the blonde guy's ah-tai, both from legend of exorcism and the girl is qian renxue from soul land. the third guy's so flamboyant just like his daddy AND he plays an instrument LMAO 😭😭 he was perfect)
for posy...... idk i'm honestly thinking of MAYBE using aiden adams from rekkyo sensen. like... i literally started that manga solely because he reminded me so much of poseidon LMAO.
if i do choose him, i'd most likely make him the baby of the family since he looks pretty young. so his name won't be solon, i'm saving that name for the first born
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for anuby, i found a bunch 😂💖💖 no names yet tho, sorry!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(from left to right: centurion from reverse 1999, and then asentah, nicole, and ahmed from dislyte)
for loki, i got nothing but a name, "kyrr" (pronounced "shira") from the old post^ and for cú chulainn, pretty much nothing so far 😭😭😭
i'll reblog and add more to this whenever more comes up, so for now just bear with me! 🥺💖

Art of past Makarios with his beautiful fiance and queen, Pelagia!!
(TW/CW: mentions of sa, enslavement and Maka eating (literally) someone)
She was his first and last love, his everything, the Apple of his eye, the first person (or being in general) to not treat him like a monster, so he is very attached to her.
Sadly, she died in a mutiny against her ("hold them down if Odysseus didn't exist" kind of mutiny) because the wealthy disliked the idea that a woman had so much ruling over them, and that she had a partner (Maka) outside of her husband (husband only in name, they were friendly with each other but her marrying him was wholly and uniquely for her benefit as a queen, they both agreed that they didn't mind the other having affairs and/or partners outside of their marriage)
So they got Alkmini (a descendant or direct daughter of Phthonos, god of jealousy, I'm still deciding which) to help them overthrow her since she was the old guard of their Royal guards, she agreed because she was jealous of how Pelagia always got Makarios' attention and love all to herself
So she was the one who killed Pelagia, the one who killed the king, who killed all servants and guards that were against her, and the one who made Makarios immortal by forcing him to consume ichor (that she got from overpowering and injuring a minor god) because she thought that would definitely make him love her (and the second part of hold them down where Antinous says he'll rape Penelope and let the other suitors have turns with her while holding her down? Happened with Makarios, hence him disliking women in general)
Turns out keeping him as a slave wouldn't turn out so good for her since he was the one who killed her a few years later, and ate her body too before fleeing far away from the palace (not cannibalism since he isn't human)
So yeah, that's Makarios' life story... I'm making a mini (at the moment at least) one shot about what exactly happened so there's more details to the whole mutiny itself
Fun fact to lighten the mood: Makarios was the one who made Pelagia's crown, he's very good at any arts and crafts related thing like sewing, making jewelry, embroidery, drawing, etc etc
Tho not so much nowadays since he's gotten a lot of hand injuries, so he experiences a lot of chronic pain on them which makes them slightly unstable at best and constantly shaking and "locking up" at worse, but he still makes a few artsy and crafty things! They're just not as good and rapidly done as they once were

a thing that is currently making me a lil insane about miss huang going to svalbard is that svalbard is the place in the his dark materials books where the experimental station is set up thanks to mrs coulter’s manipulation of iofur raknison. in hdm, the station is the place where children get their daemons, their souls, cut away before they reach puberty, so they are forever inert as people. more importantly to the church (the greater scope villain/antagonist of book 1 and much of the series as a whole), children who’ve had their demons cut away are also freed from sin.
and, most importantly, in the reveal scene where lyra our protagonist and we the audience finally learn that this process is the “intercision” other characters have been talking about, the narrator specifically refers to tony makarios, the boy who has been cut from his daemon, as “a severed child.” and iirc those are the last words of the chapter where we learn this.
and uhhhh lemme tell you. miss huang going to a place that shares this name, coming in the same ep as “she’s one of jame’s” coupled with what we know about harmony and hampton’s child labor in the ether mill and how kier met imogen when he was a stewMAN and she was a swabGIRL. well i don’t feel great about all these implications i’m finding i tell ya the fuck what

Read the books of the Fathers and study their teachings. It will be helpful in recognizing your infirmity and in obtaining humility, patience, and love, and it enlightens us as to how to oppose the passions and cleanse our heart of thorny plants, and sow the virtues.
