Reprisal

Arthur Morgan grew up hearing stories about the Van Der Linde Gang from his father, Lyle, Valentine’s Sheriff. When his father is killed in a violent shootout between Cornwall’s hired hand and the Van Der Linde’s, Arthur, now an adult and previously a deputy beneath his father’s command, makes it his personal mission to take them in. One by one. Even if it kills him.

I’m just gonna say it, I don’t think Sean, Kieran, Hosea, or Lenny would’ve undoubtably taken Arthur’s side in the end. I know everyone says it, but I think there’s an argument to be made against that claim. It’s idealistic. It’s fun to think about, in every au I write they’re team Arthur—but I doubt it would’ve been that simple if any of them survived.

I see Lenny and Sean sticking it out with Dutch, and I see Hosea enabling bad behaviour until it’s too late to correct it. If Kieran somehow survived maybe Arthur would’ve lovingly throw him out as a mercy ( a la Strauss but positive), but even that I don’t know.

I don’t think Hosea’s death was the final nail in the coffin for Dutch, if he survived I think Dutch still would’ve pushed the gang the way he had, and I don’t see Hosea swooping in to save everyone last second, like the levelheaded good guy we seem to headcanon him as. He might’ve been more vocal in his distaste about the direction they were headed in, but I don’t know that it would do anything without direct actions against Dutch. Which I don’t think he would take tbh

Same with Javier. I hear a lot of “he only sided with Dutch bc of rdr1” “it’s only to keep his story consistent to the first game” I don’t think that’s true either. Never mind who he seemed to LIKE more, it’s about loyalty. That’s what his entire characterization comes down to. Similarly with Sean and Lenny, never mind how fond of Arthur they might’ve been, they’re loyal to Dutch.

Arthur is loyal too of course, but he’s more or less been given a sentence. Arthur’s tb hit him fast. He’s faced with the inevitability of his fate so abruptly that it kicks him into action. He could die any day, so he has to make every decision count. It drove him to question his core beliefs. Hosea was sick too, but it was slow and lingering, not enough to be a conduit for change the way Arthur’s was.

Without an inciting incident of that impact, I don’t see any of the other men mentioned above reaching a point where they actively choose disloyalty to the man that ‘saved them’.

One thing I haven't seen Dutch tumblrs talk about yet is how the new cabinet wants to change the way the voting system works, and fast. To be precise:

"Een wetsvoorstel tot invoering van een nieuw kiesstelsel voor de Tweede Kamer ter versterking van de regionale band tussen kiezers en gekozenen wordt dit jaar ingediend, gericht op tijdige inwerkingtreding voor de volgende verkiezingen"

Or in English:

"A bill introducing a new electoral system for the House of Representatives to strengthen the regional link between voters and elected officials will be introduced this year, aimed at coming into force in time for the next election."

Is it just me or does that sound like they want to institute a "winner take it all" system? Like saying, one candidate per district gets chosen, like in the UK (if I recall correctly)?

It sounds like they want to preserve their own power at the cost of democracy itself. Which party is behind this part and what are their intentions? A legal coup?

Like, this gets me scared. If last elections were bad for democracy, then a law change like that would basically put an end to it all together. Is it really a democracy if only two or three parties can get seats?

You do not understand how much I need young vandermatthews from Dutch's POV where he's just so hopelessly in love with this fantastic and sad man. Just need him watching Hosea with a stupid lovesick look on his face as the other man laughs; not a fake laugh he shows to the people they con but the true bubbly laugh he saves only for Dutch.
