Hi! Im new to pokemon and you seem like the right person to ask, or can direct me to a better person to ask? I want to play every pokemon game but some are just the same game with small differences, right? Is there a list of which are the “ideal” games to play so I can experience it all correctly? I have been looking at the wiki pages but I dont know which pokemon are “better” so Im not sure which games to pick on my own! Thank you! :)
oh hey no problem!!
yeah so pokemon tends to release new games in sets of two, the two games are usually identical aside from certain pokemon that are exclusive to one version or the other, which encourages trading between players. for your purposes, if you're going to try and play every pokemon game, you don't need to play both X and Y for example, just one of the two. additionally sometimes pokemon releases a third version of... once again the same game, with perhaps a few story changes but mainly improvements to mechanics and bug fixes etc - this is more of a remnant of the older titles before DLC/patches were a thing and they don't do this much anymore but i digress. no pokemon between versions are "better", really just comes down to personal preference. most people pick by which box art pokemon they like better (like when diamond and pearl came out i picked diamond because i liked dialga more than palkia lol)
BASICALLY, tldr, if you want to play one of each pokemon game, you want to play the following... if i list two games, that means they don't have a superior third version, just pick the one with the pokemon you like more that's on the box art. i've also marked the games that are remakes in italics, so if you aren't counting remakes you can skip them (though i recommend them, they're usually good on their own merits and feel very different from the originals!)
gen 1: yellow (also has a virtual console release on 3DS)
gen 2: crystal (also has a virtual console release on 3DS)
gen 3: emerald + firered OR leafgreen
gen 4: platinum + heartgold OR soulsilver
gen 5: black OR white + black 2 OR white 2
gen 6: x OR y + omega ruby OR alpha sapphire
gen 7: ultra sun OR ultra moon + let's go pikachu OR let's go eevee
gen 8: sword OR shield + brilliant diamond OR shining pearl + legends arceus
gen 9: scarlet OR violet
the above list should take you through the key games of every generation without repeats. i hope this helps i'm flattered to be of service for this problem lol i hope you have fun!! if you're still confused or have more questions feel free to ask

WELL THIS IS A THING I GUESS. thanks for the blog arceus at least i can talk to not old timey people.
hiii!! my names dusk im 15 i'm she/her pronouns, and i am stuck in . ancient pokemon world. for some reason arceus fucked up my phone ? and now i'm filling out the pokedex!!!!
i like pokemon and baseball and video games and biology and horses
[ OOC under readmore ]
Hi!!! It's been ages since I've RP'd on tumblr~ Firstly,
RULES!
No NSFW- Dusk is 15
I prefer planning out antagonistic interactions!
I LOVE CROSSOVER STUFF!!!!!
Non-fandom characters are welcome, as are OC's of all sorts!
Personal blogs are welcome to reblog and observe, but I will likely not interact outside of asks- Mainly out of habit, from an older custom of tumblr rp
If you wanna chat ooc, just ask!
This blog follows back from @greyedworlds !
PREMISE!
Obviously, Dusk is an Original Character of the player from Pokemon Legends: Arceus. She's operating under a key rule because she's seen time travel fiction: Do NOT tell of the future of the pokemon world- Being ominous is fine because it's funny. She's from 2011, so pokemon Black and White had just recently come out- she chose pokemon White.
She was one of those kids who got put into a ton of extracurriculars (girl scouts, sports, pre-AP and AP, etc.) by her overambitious, well off parents. Her relationship with them is strained- she's frankly relieved to be in Hisui. I'll be slowly having the plot of the game happen, which she'll blog about.
Dusk is not her actual name, but it's her internet pseudonym. She likes it better anyway, so is going by it in Hisui. I think she's probably a white USAmerican that only speaks English- She can understand everyone's languages, verbal and written, and they can understand her English. It's weird for everyone, since both parties can definitely hear and read the Different languages. Thank you Arceus for translation beam.
She chose Rowlett as her starter, because she's never seen that pokemon before, and is curious as to what it evolves into.
THE MUN!
I'm Abyss- 22 years old, and a DID system- and I've made a new rule for ourself: Do NOT roleplay as characters that are the source of someone in the system. Fortunately I think Dusk will retain funny little guy status. We use plural they/them pronouns- we're a white USAmerican as well, so we WILL be doing a lot of research for daily life in the area and time period that inspired the game- specifically seems to be based upon 1850-1900 Ezo, which is currently named Hokkaido.

new & improved about me
hi. you can call me a (it stands for whatever you want it to, send me your guesses if you want). i like fighting type pokemon, music, and traveling, so you'll see some posts about that. i'm an adult and any pronouns are fine.
{{ooc: my other blogs are @snowpointmailguy and @greatesteagle , but they all follow from here!}}
{{ OOC UNDER READMORE -- I RECOMMEND CHECKING IT }}
warning: i'm wordy. you don't have to read this whole thing, but i'd appreciate it if you at least skimmed the bold parts!
i've been meaning to update this blog with a fancified account for a hot minute since i got a (frankly surprising) amount of followers from this post--originally, when i started pokeblogging, i was mainly just intending to interact with my friends and they more or less know what i'm about. i think that, since i'm planning on kicking this blog back to life with an event, it's fair that everyone have some basic information about me, what i will and won't interact with, and my character.
for me: hi, i'm eve. i'm also an adult (21) who uses any pronouns, like my character, but that's where a lot of our similarities end, lol. as i'll elaborate on a bit later, this blog is sfw and i don't care if minors follow/interact, but i want this info out there so people can set boundaries as they feel they need to. i'm not excessively familiar with pokeblogging but i've been roleplaying on and off in various places for a long time! i'm wordy and i can be a bit blunt but i promise i'm friendly and would love to rp or talk :3
general boundary-setting:
like aforementioned, anything to be posted on this blog is sfw. for clarifying purposes, this refers to sexual content exclusively, and not necessarily violent content. any interactions of explicit natures will be ignored, and i would rather not extensively interact with any predominantly nsfw blogs; i'm happy to write with sfw sideblogs though! i want this blog to be safe for all ages; generally, i aim to maintain a pg-13 rating, so (for other adult muses only, please) mildly suggestive flirting that fits within that rating is fine!
i'm not familiar with all of the pokeblogging terms, but as a general rule of thumb, i'll interact with any kind of rp blog. canon protagonists, oc protagonists, fallers, sapient pokemon, it's all cool with me. however, i'd rather not interact extensively with any non-rp blogs, because...
i do my best to keep ic and ooc interactions purely separate. i am not generally comfortable interacting ic to ooc, ooc to ic, which means i politely ask you not to reblog my posts (with additions) on non-rp blogs because i will ignore them. asks from non-rp blogs are fine on or off anon as long as they aren't intended to be long-form interactions. i just need it abundantly clear that i am not my character and my character is not me.
about the character:
all of this information below is ooc and most muses have no way to know it. there will be hints for attentive muses but please don't pull anything revealing on him without letting me, the mun know beforehand.
a is an oc protagonist for legends arceus. he is alive in a day close to the present, primarily hanging around in paldea. he looks like a particularly haggard thirty-something, and that's the age range he claims, but he has lived for over a century. he has protagonist-level knowledge of the base game canon and will interact with legends arceus characters with that knowledge in mind. also, warning for a canon-typical complicated relationship with arceus/god figures in general.
a is not his real name. i would say she wouldn't give out her real name, except an attentive muse might notice this blog's connection to @snowpointmailguy at some point. the connection is that they're the same person, from two different points on the timeline. snowpointmailguy is drew pre-hisui timejump, lopunnears is drew many years post-hisui timejump.
various heavy content warnings may apply; i will tag to the best of my ability but feel free to ask if something is showing up frequently that i'm not tagging. if i start any major arc that will have frequent sensitive material, i'll make an announcement post warning for it!
if you got to the bottom, wow, i can't believe i actually wrote that much. i'm no good at being succinct, lol. thank you for reading and i look forward to writing with you!

Was reading your Raichu post, which prompted this giant message.
There actually is some evidence that regular animals still exist in the Pokemon world, just not as prominently. There's actually promo material of Pikachu and Ash walking past a lady walking her dog, for example. This suggest that, originally, regular animals and Pokemon were supposed to coexist.
Tumblr media
One possible explanation for why we don't see them is that they're less popular than owning Pokemon, and since wild animals generally avoid humans, trainers wouldn't encounter them, much.
Takashi Shudo, on the other hand, claims all real-world animals went extinct and were replaced by Pokemon (presumably by evolving into them...hopefully) but this seems to contradict all the stories of "Ancient" Pokemon, unless the series is thousands of years in the future, making us the Ancient Ones.
I actually dislike this explanation, because he also claims all the real-world animals that appeared were simply "animation mistakes" which makes zero sense in the case of the Ghastly turning into a mongoose, which was very obviously deliberately done, not a "mistake" like he claims.
Tumblr media
There also was a Pokemon book called "Bulbasaur's Trouble" where Bulbasaur had to find a frog to settle a dispute between two children...the frog was a main part of the plot, and thus can't be written off as a "mistake."
Furthermore, the inclusion of Pokemon like Arceus, who supposedly created the world, would imply that Pokemon have been around since the beginning...unless he either wasn't originally a Pokemon, or recreated the world after it was destroyed.
Takashi Shudo's word should also be taken with a grain of salt since he didn't create the series, he was mainly the chief writer for the anime adaptation, so while he was very influential and created Lugia, his word isn't exactly final, it's just one opinion that many of the other writers for the series may disagree with for all we know. As a matter of fact, as far as I can find, he's the ONLY one who spoke on the matter, so we don't know the other writer's opinion on the matter. Raichu's entries continuing to reference Indian Elephants could be a sign that others working on the games disagree with his interpretation. We still don't have Satoshi Tajiri's word on the matter, either.
Furthermore, while it is more common in Gen 1, you can still see real-world aquatic animals in the Sun and Moon anime such as starfish and various shellfish, all the anime features coral, barnacles are sometimes seen, and in the Black and White manga they ask if someone was scared by a spider...a regular spider.
Tumblr media
If you want to look more into it, Bulbapedia has an entire article listing all the times normal animals appeared in the franchise.
You sent this a year ago, and I’m just now publishing it because I’m only now deciding to finally return to this blog! In the year since you sent this in, though, a fascinating thing happened: Raichu’s dex entry in Legends Arceus seemingly retconned the old Indian elephant into Copperajah. Or, alternatively, an Indian elephant is just as easily knocked out by Raichu as Copperajah is, and Copperajah is simply a more useful barometer for Professor Laventon to use :U I think my stance at this point is that it’s undeniable that, early in the franchise, real animals were 100% intended to exist in the pokemon world, even in modern times. This tracks with early promotional material you showed above, and also the supplementary Gen 1 Pokedex book translated by Dr. Lava just a couple years ago, which not only includes references to real-life animals, but also theorizes that stuff like Vulpix are related to real-life foxes. Most outlandishly, Kabuto is claimed to be a common ancestor of hermit crabs and *turtles*. It’s a fascinating read and I highly recommend it! Link here: https://lavacutcontent.com/1996-creatures-pokedex-translation-1/ As for nowadays, though, I think it’s kept purposefully vague. Stuff like starfish are still shown, as are coral and some small insects, but most things that people will readily identify as a traditional “animal” are very strongly avoided. I suspect there’s not really an internal statement whether real-life animals do or don’t exist -- there’s just general orders not to show them, regardless of if they do or not. And invertebrates are just the best at slipping through the cracks. For myself, though, I agree with you -- if non-pokemon plants and fungi and rocks can exist, why not non-pokemon animals too? Anyways, with SV having recently unveiled its official artwork for its new pokemon, now’s as good as time as any to resume the reviews c:

s/o who is descended from famous pokemon trainer and try their best to live up to their ancestor legacy headcanons
I feel like this is based on the Legends Arceus game because of the “ancestor” part-
Sordward
I mean, he’s one of the descendants of the first kings, alongside his younger brother. And he did try to live up to their legacy, but that sort of failed-
Based on the stunt they pulled, it sort of ruined their royal family stuff. Yeah, they might still be royalty (despite giving that title to someone else), but by blood and history wise.
So he’s very much intrigued by this, more so if your ancestor's legacy is similar to his. Like being royalty or a leader of some kind. But it’s just a famous Pokemon trainer as far as he knows-
He might’ve heard stories regarding that specific trainer. But maybe not. Since he’s not really an expert when it comes to “becoming famous because you have strong Pokemons”.
Even if you were to feel down; believing that you don’t live up to your ancestor. He can guarantee that you’re doing a great job so far since you didn’t do what he did.
Shielbert
Well, he and his older brother are descendants of the first kings. He, along with his older brother, wishes to continue their legacy, but we all know how that turned out.
Those two are now pretty much seen as clowns by everyone, but still, it doesn’t change the fact that they have their own ancestors that used to have high respect.
But hey, at least you’re kinda like him; having an ancestor that was extremely famous and/or popular for reasons. Only difference is that you didn’t attempt to destroy your home region.
And you’re doing a great job so far; living up to your ancestor’s legacy. He’s even willing to tell you that he’s impressed by how far you got in general. You don’t even need to live up to their legacy. He’s already proud of you.
He’s even willing to help you, if you need his help of course. Although he’s probably not the best when it comes to “becoming a strong trainer”. But he knows a good way to go is by battling his and other people’s Pokemon team.
Emmet
Man, that’s so cool. He doesn’t even know his ancestors at all. I mean, yet again, he doesn’t really 100% care. If Ingo didn’t say anything to him, then why bother caring?
He’s not really the kind of dude that worries about the past. Well… at least THAT far in the past. But he knows why we should care about that.
It’s mainly to prevent past mistakes from being made again. Or something like that. But still, this is pretty pog my guy-
He kinda wants to battle you, just to see if you do actually live up to your ancestor stuff. And of course, you do. You managed to beat him within five seconds.
You can tell him stories or the origins regarding your ancestor. Since it’s likely that he doesn’t even know who they are, but it’s still kinda cool-
Ingo
That’s pretty fascinating chief. He never expected you to have a very famous Pokemon trainer as an ancestor. Although, maybe he has heard stories about them.
I mean, as far as he’s aware, his ancestors didn’t have much going for them. Besides those weird hair things on the side of his head, he has nothing to show.
He might ask you stories regarding your ancestor if he has never heard of them before, or if he doesn’t know much regarding their backstory.
I mean, if you feel insecure about it, like if you believe that you’re not doing a great job living up to your ancestor, he’ll tell you otherwise. That you’re doing fantastic!
A lot of people claim that he’s probably one of the strongest Pokemon trainers, maybe not the strongest in the world, but he’s pretty good. You can battle him if you wish to become stronger, and don’t be discouraged if you lose. You can try again and again.

random iatsu (iason) notes...
his names are not his real name and the world he currently resides in is not the one he’s originally from (casually has dimension traveling powers and has had them since he was very young)
Tumblr media
hair is long, just because. the funny stick up ribbons he wears are from his sister, who honestly thought he would just throw them away (he didn’t).
sarcastic and often tired. loves sweets. good at keeping secrets. can be polite, though this is mainly for business/formal occasions (what).
was randomly chosen as to be my pokemon white protag (via random number generator.) has been hanging out at gear station for no discernible reason (well... the reason is it’s actually his second time through and i don’t feel like doing the end game stuff right now oooooooops)
there might be Legends Arceus related nonsense in progress because of a small pile of coincidences. but anyway (?)

📚 🍄 and 💡!!!
favorite fandom for write for?
You know I’ve never really thought about this before! Probably Third Life/Last Life as it’s really nice getting all the comments and feedback from my friends in that fandom!!
how do you get yourself in the mood to write?
MINTS!!! I pavloved myself by eating a mint every time I write and now when I get really bad writers block I eat a mint and it fades away for a bit
what inspires your fic ideas?
Generally it’s just “what-if’s” and daydreams. Like for Extinction Event it was “what if cyrus won?” but for Third/Last Life it’s more like “what if these characters Talked” like in Hearts of Gold and some more of my desert duo fics!! Because they’re popular and fairly recent I’ll also give what inspired my submas fics:
The Emmet as the protag au came from me daydreaming about Ingo walking through a blizzard while I was walking in the snow. then it evolved to Ingo leading Emmet somewhere in the snow and I was like “huh. I wonder how Emmet could naturally get there?” and then protag!emmet appeared in my mind
When All The Flowers Are Rotten came from me reading a fic about Ingo and the protag going through portals and meeting different people (I think cyrus was the first person. which was probably why I was reading it lol) and it gave me the idea of the portals being two-way. I have a headcanon that the Coronet Highlands’ portals ONLY lead to Unova so it all really clicked into place!!
Do You Recognize Me? was born from me training a Zoroark in Legends Arceus and thinking “hm. there’s a lot of angst of a zoroark mimicking ingo and looking like Emmet. wouldn’t it be SAD if the opposite happened” and then I made it a few days after the disappearance for maximum pain
a memoir to the forgotten was inspired by history repeating and gave me the bravery to write something outside my usual format. It was mainly supposed to be emails and social media originally lol
Ghost Trains Carry No Passengers was born from an ask game!!
Lucifer, Your Horns Are Showing came from me wanting desperately to read some Ingo & Volo fics and finding NONE. It was originally crack with Volo just talking about legends but his creepiness really bled through and made it really angsty lmao
Your Man-Made Darkness was FULLY inspired by @krikidilly’s False Impressions AU. I got fuckin possessed and wrote it in one sitting because I LOVE possession tropes
fic writer ask game!!

My Top 5 favorite Pokémon Boss Battle Themes
So, I fell into a pit of my Pokémon nostalgia. Don't look at me, I loved these games as a kid, and I don't enjoy what they have become. That being said, I really hope the Sinnoh remakes - both BDSP and Legends - are good, since Sinnoh was my first region and I'd hate to see it butchered. Plus, they look promising. But I'm not getting my hopes up yet, I'll wait for reviews.
Anyways, one of the things I enjoyed so much about these games is the music. I could probably hum you some of the Sinnoh tunes, or even sing the lyrics I imagined for them (it's obvious that Sinnoh is still my favorite region, isn't it?). Or I could list some of my favorite music tracks from all across the series. So... I did just that to get my hype energy somewhere 😂
So yeah, I hope you enjoy this little list 😊 I tried to explain the stories and memories associated with those musical themes as well as I can for those of you who aren't into Pokémon. That being said - spoilers for Pokémon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and especially the Sinnoh games ahead.
Oh, and if you do know Pokémon - please leave a comment or reblog and tell me what your favorite boss battle theme is, I'd love to know!
Since Pokémon doesn't have an explicified boss definition, here is what I define as boss battles in Pokémon:
Rival Battles
Gym Battles
Elite Four Battles
Champion Battles
Commander Battles
Admin Battles
Legendary / Unique Pokémon Battles
Frontier Brain or similar Battles
With that being said, let's go!
#5: Pokémon UltraSun/UltraMoon: VS Ultra Necrozma
youtube
I will admit, I haven't played the game. I heard this battle is actually pretty difficult, but I can't speak for myself on this. Pokémon games have stopped to be enjoyable to me with Sun and Moon, which had an amazing storyline and some great gameplay concepts, but just... Not enjoyable to me. And USUM seemed like cashgrab to me. I will say though, this musical theme has something and might as well be the best legendary battle theme of modern Pokémon for me.
#4: Pokémon OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire: VS Brendan/May
youtube
In Gen3, Game Freak tried out a new approach with the rival character. See, you always have a rival in Pokémon, and up until this point, all rivals were pretty much jerks. What this new approach was? Well... Let's just say they made the rival character the crush of the player character.
Depending on whether you play as Brendan (whom everyone thought to have white hair before ORAS, except Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamamoto, who make the Pokémon Adventures manga) or as May, the other will be the rival, and let me tell you, the game pushes this ship really hard in my opinion. It's no wonder why the manga chose to write Ruby and Sapphire, Brendan's and May's counterparts respectively, as a romantic couple, who even confess their love for each other - twice.
Their battle theme conveys this perfectly: this isn't two people who hate each other battling, these are two friends, who might like each other more than you like a casual friend, battling to spend time together. Despite that, both of them are determined to not lose.
One of my favorite moments in the entire game is the ending of it. After the credits (during which Brendan and May are riding their bikes home together) have rolled, you arrive at the pond where you and your rival first met, and they will challenge you to a battle once more. It's when you hear this theme, the one you've listened to every time you battled Brendan or May during the game, and it's just an amazing moment in my opinion, one that is accompanied by this soundtrack, following absolute silence.
And yes, I prefer the remake version of this track.
#3: Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum: VS Cyrus
youtube
Since Kingdom Hearts is currently my main fandom and therefore most people following me probably know more about that series than about Pokémon, let me explain who Cyrus is: Cyrus is the Xehanort of Pokémon. And that up there is his battle theme. And safe for the one time they butchered it by turning it into a disco song for USUM, it's absolutely perfect.
I especially like the beginning. It conveys intensity and the dangerous situation you're in. I mean, Cyrus literally wants to destroy the universe to replace it with a new one he will rule as a god. He also regards all emotions as weakness and will openly admit that his grunts are useless and merely tools to him. Honestly, he is the most terrifying antagonist of the entire series to me, mainly because his plan is that of a madman, but he is actually serious about it (and unlike Xehanort doesn't let go of it even after his defeat).
At the same time, the musical theme sounds hopeful - like all will be good. And I mean, all is eventually good. You have your Pokémon with you, and Cynthis (who also has a badass battle theme by the way) helps you out too. Here is a great thing about the Sinnoh plot: Cynthia has been built up as a character you can trust, and her philosophy is the direct contrast to Cyrus'. So when she helps you battle Cyrus and Team Galactic - you know she won't let anything happen to you. Despite how terrifying Cyrus is as a villain, you know you're safe, because you have not only your Pokémon, but her on your side. Oh, and she is the final boss of the game. So in the end, you and your Pokémon overcome not only the villain, but also the person who held your hand the entire time.
Sorry this turned into me gushing about the plot of the Sinnoh games, but I can't help it 😅 On with the show!
#2: Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver: VS Champion/Red
youtube
If Cyrus is the Xehanort of Pokémon, then Red is it's Yozora. And while his musical theme is technically not his alone, I definitely associate it with him more than I associate it with Lance.
One of the best things about Red in my opinion is how he is foreshadowed during the entire game. Like, in the first city you visit, an elderly man will tell you about a boy named Red who three years ago saved the neighbouring region Kanto from the evil Team Rocket. Then, you hear nothing about him for a very long time - until Blue Oak mentions him again on Cinnebar Island and you meet his worried mother at Pallet Town.
While Red is technically an optional secret boss, the game makes you want to beat him through the little details it reveals about him. That he is a legend, that he is the true Champion of the Indigo League... To me, his mother worrying about him was always what got me the most.
I have to say, I also got a soft spot for the 8-Bit-version of the theme, it's just not what I grew up with. I admittedly never played GSC. I also like the Gen7 take on the theme, which mixes the original melody with the Alolan vibes.
#1: Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum: VS Dialga / Palkia
youtube
I don't know how, but they managed to make the piano in this theme as epic as a theme for those two Dr Who-deities deserve. It sounds mysterious and it makes you respect what is in front of you, without sounding bombastic like Arceus' theme (which is also freaking amazing, ngl). Not that that is a bad thing, but I feel like the mysterious vibe fits Dialga and Palkia, who are the embodiments of two very abstract concepts. Arceus is simply god, and that's that. But Dialga and Palkia are the embodiments of time and space, two concepts that are far more difficult to grasp than "god".
Dialga also has an amazing battle theme in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky, which definitely deserves an honorable mention here (Palkia's theme in said game is okay, but they definitely got the short end of the stick IMO).
I really hope they're not going to butcher this theme (or Cynthia's. Or Cyrus'. Or any of the Gen4 themes really) in the remakes. But the one thing Pokémon didn't mess up completely for me so far is the soundtrack (except that one time they turned Cyrus' theme into a disco song, which really doesn't fit him at all). So I have faith in that at least.
What's your favorite boss battle theme in Pokémon? Leave me a comment if you like, I'd love to hear about it!
