38. isn’t it wild how kaelie can be naked and they have full on sex scenes when it’s a heterosexual couple but we didn’t get a proper scene with Malec until almost the end of season two. and I’m not saying we needed to see Magnus and Alec have a full on sex scene but even their kisses are super short. yes we get a lot of Malec but some of their scenes are super short. like that kiss scene was less than 30 seconds but the CLACE stuff in season one ran over a minute if I had to assume

I’m surprised Izzy lasted this long. and part of it is going to be the withdrawal from the yin fein but why shouldn’t Isabelle go off? why does everyone have to be obsessed with Jace and clary and fucking bow on the ground they walk on? why must they be worshipped? why can’t Alec be rightfully upset at jace and why can’t Izzy have enough after clary lies to her? literally all Alec and Izzy plus Simon have done for these two (and mags) and it never seems to be enough for CLACE. she’s been nothing but the greatest friend clary could have and clary takes advantage of her

maia. let's see... well, maia react the same way as kira, except in this case it's like having a younger sister. she's probably heard about aka before from shula though!! (since maia is out of town most of the time they probably video call or smth...) so she's already had a very good impression of her before or if they ever met 👍

I... can’t think of five people to tag, but if anyone wants the creative exercise or just to show off their OC, you can claim I tagged you!

1. What is your name?

Maia Shan. Most of the galaxy still knows me as Maia Sunder, though. At this point it's simpler to stick with the name people know.

2. Do you know why are you named that?

I don't. If there's any particular meaning to my name, I've never heard it.

3. Are you single or taken?

I'm married. [smiling] So, very much taken.

4. Have any abilities or powers?

I've always been strong in the Force. It enables me to do many things people would say are impossible.

Aside from that, I've been trained extensively in combat and leadership. As a Jedi, I was often expected to lead troops in battle. [pensive] The more things change...

5. Stop being a Mary Sue.

I have no idea what that is...?

If you have a grievance, we can talk about it.

6. What’s your eye color?

Blue.

7. How about your hair color?

Brown.

8. Have any family members?

...I don't actually know. I came to the Jedi Temple as a young child, so I don't remember much about where I came from before then. A Jedi is... better off without those kinds of attachments, or so they tell us.

I may have family out there, somewhere. Perhaps one day I'll try to find out. Even if there's anything to find, though, we'd be strangers to one another after all this time.

My family is my crew, the Alliance. The people who've stood by me through the worst the galaxy can throw at us.

9. Oh? How about pets?

[brightens] I have two akk puppies - Tala and Tor'ika. They were a wedding gift.

10. That’s cool, I guess. Now, tell me something you don’t like?

[watch that face fall, man] Something I don't like--

Dark Lords I have personally killed coming back to life and causing more problems for everyone. That's a big one.

Also, unnecessarily powerful superweapons designed to do more damage than anyone could possibly justify, and all the pain and loss caused by people fighting over control of them.

11. Do you have any activities/hobbies that you like to do?

Hobbies, hmm... It's hard to cultivate many pastimes when you stay as busy as I do. I used to enjoy gardening, back at the Temple when I was still in training. Cultivating something and seeing it grow bit by bit, adding a little more life to the universe... there's satisfaction in that.

Now that I'm actually based planetside for the forseeable future, I could try my hand at it again. I'm still in space for long periods of time, though, so I really wouldn't be able to give it the time it needs.

Does meditation qualify as a pastime?

12. Have you ever hurt anyone in any way before?

[softly] Too many, I'm afraid.

I'd... rather not go into specifics. All I can say is that I regret the hurts I've caused, and I hope they can be healed in time.

13. Ever... killed anyone before?

Yes.

I'm not proud of it, but there are times when there's no other option.

14. What kind of animal are you?

I've never thought about it before. An akk dog, maybe? 

--ha, or probably a tauntaun, now that I think about it. Hardy, stubborn, frequently relied on as a beast of labor in impossibly extreme circumstances... [amused] that sounds about right.

15. Name your worst habits?

People don't usually see themselves clearly enough to know their own worst habits. I doubt I'm an exception, but I'll give it a try.

I have a hard time refusing when someone says they need my help. I'm not good at deception, and people have told me that I trust too easily. I'm not sure those really count as bad habits, but they have caused trouble in the past.

[pause; she tilts her head, listening for a moment]

--ahem. I've been instructed to tell you that my worst habit is "rushing ahead into trouble on my own and making everybody else panic." That's probably right.

[pointedly] Even if the source is the last person I want to hear that from.

I also have a terrible sense of direction. You'd think I'd be able to find my way using the Force, but it doesn't work that way. If I don't have someone navigating for me, I get lost far too easily. [soft, embarrassed laugh] Not exactly a "bad habit," but it's definitely a weakness.

16. Do you look up to anyone at all?

Yes, of course. There are a lot of people I admire.

If I had to name one - I'll always look up to Master Orgus Din, the Jedi who mentored me. He's gone now, but I still strive to live up to everything he taught me.

17. Are you gay, straight or bisexual?

Mmm, straight, I suppose?

18. Do you go to school?

There's always more to learn. I try to keep an open mind when it comes to picking up new things. But as far as formal education, no, I haven't attended lessons in a long time.

19. Ever want to marry and have kids one day?

I'm already married, so there's that.

It's hard to imagine having children with things as they are... but then again, if you'd asked me a few years ago I'd have said I never expected to marry. Life's full of surprises.

As long as we're on the front lines of this war, though, it doesn't seem wise. I wouldn't want to bring children into all of this.

20. Do you have any fangirls/fanboys?

Apparently. It's odd to think about, but whether I like it or not I've become a very public figure.

I can only hope I make a good example.

21. What are you most afraid of?

Even though serving as a leader in battle was one of my duties as a Jedi, being the Commander of the whole Alliance is more than I ever saw myself taking on. There are so many lives riding on the decisions I make, these days. It’s a lot of pressure. I don’t think there are many decisions I make any more that don’t come with the fear of making the wrong call, and of what could happen if my judgment’s off.

And still, even more than that...

...Jedi are taught to avoid emotional attachments, that the fear of losing those we care about will unbalance our judgment and lead us to the Dark Side. I’ve never entirely agreed with the Order on that... but I can’t say that they’re entirely wrong, either.

I have people that I love, that I never want to lose. I’ve been faced with the possibility, and it terrified me.

I know I can’t let that fear control me. If it came down to it, though...

[quiet]

22. What do you usually wear?

[tugs awkwardly at jacket, looking embarrassed] 

Practical clothes, mostly. Things that I’m comfortable in, that won’t restrict my movement and will hold up to a lot of punishment.

Jedi robes are good for that, but it feels off to wear them these days. I’m not sure I’m qualified any more. I still wear them around my room sometimes, though.

23. What’s one food that tempts you?

When you’ve been living on ration packs for a while, anything else starts to look appealing. Fresh fruits are my favorite - Alderaanian starblossom is delicious, but it’s hard to get out here in Wild Space.

24. Am I annoying to you?

Not at all. Asking questions is a way to learn.

25. Well, it’s still not over!

26. What class are you (low/middle/high)?

That’s hard to answer... or at least, I don’t think I’ve ever thought of myself in those terms? And as I said, when it comes to my origins I don’t really remember what kind of family I came from.

A Jedi isn’t supposed to care about that kind of thing. It doesn’t always quite work out that way, but - well.

27. How many friends do you have?

Many. I’ve been very fortunate in my friends - I’d never have gotten this far without them. If I started listing names, we’d be here all day and I’d still probably leave someone out by accident and feel terrible about it. 

...there is one I should mention, though. Kira Carsen. She was with me almost from the beginning, longer than anyone but Teeseven. We went through a lot together, and she always had my back.

I wish I had a way to know how she’s doing now. Just to know that she’s all right.

28. What are your thoughts on pie?

Pie is always a good idea. 

29. Favorite drink?

I prefer tea. I was introduced to a Gatalentan blend recently that I’ve been enjoying quite a bit.

30. What’s your favorite place?

Just one? It’s hard to say. One of the great things about traveling the galaxy the way I have is all the different places I’ve been able to see. Even on the harshest worlds, like Tatooine or Hoth, there are places of beauty.

I’ve formed more of a connection to Odessen than I expected. I suppose in a way, it’s become “home” for me, more than many of the places I’ve lived. There’s a spot I came across not too long ago, a little spring-fed pond tucked away in the woods across the canyon...

...well, anyway.

31. Are you interested in anyone?

Still married!

32. That was a stupid question...

There are no stupid questions. [laughs] All right, maybe a little.

33. Would you rather swim in a lake or the ocean?

Either, really. I don’t know that I can claim a preference, especially since it’s not very often I get the chance to go swimming just for fun. That spring I mentioned, in the Odessen woods - that was nice. Very cold, but refreshing. 

On the other hand, there’s something to be said for the power of the ocean. It reminds me of the Force, a little: it’s so vast, you can’t fight against it. If you try it’ll just swallow you up. But if you learn to understand and work with it, to gain a feel for its flow, it can take you places you’d never have reached on your own.

34. What’s your type?

My type...?

Shadowhunters | 3.01 Review

Shadowhunters - On Infernal Ground

written by Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer, directed by Matt Hasting

After a great finale in season 2, season 3 starts of on the same high level: the characters are now dealing with the aftermath of Valentine’s and Sebastian’s attack and the result of their own actions. We’re also introduced to the new antagonist: Lilith. A lot of this first episode is a setup, but for that it is well done. Almost every character gets their little moment, and the bigger stories are set in motion. There are a lot of little plots and to take care of, so I’ll try to devide this into character groups in a futile attempt to get this review in order.

Clary & Jace

“No one can know, Clary.”

The episode starts on a positive note and an important step in Clary’s development: she is finally officially recognized as a Shadowhunter and gets her Shadowhunter rune as well as signature weapons – dual kindjals, two weapons that Clary chose by instinct. Luke later reveals to her that these weapons were her parents’ weapons before. In the following fight against a demon Clary uses them quite well but also shows that her real strength lies in creating and drawing runes. I like that we get to see Clary as a competent fighter but they still let her real powers be her ability to draw runes. With this skill she’s equally (if not more) useful as other Shadowhunters, despite her lack of experience.

Clary’s Shadowhunter initiation is overshadowed by the fact that Clary and Jace both haven’t told anyone about the wish that Clary used to revive Jace after Valentine had killed him. Jace seems to be naturally disturbed by this, but he’s also plagued by nightmares. His parabatai Alec suspects there is more to the story than Jace and Clary are willing to admit, but they both refuse to tell him the truth.

Alec & Magnus

“You never have to pretend how you feel.”

Alec was offered a position on the Council, while Magnus was dismissed because of his support for the Seelie Queen. He claims to be okay with it, but after talking to Catarina at the hospital Alec realizes that is not the case. Magnus also pretends to be okay with Alec possibly moving to Idris for his new job, but in the end Alec can get him to open up about how he really feels like and assures him that he can be honest with him – and that he won’t move to Idris.

Luke & Ollie

“That wolf… that was you, wasn't it?”

Since Ollie has found out about Luke’s identity as a werewolf, Luke tries to convince her that this idea is ridiculous. And most people would probably believe him, but apparently Ollie has had an encounter with werewolves before, so she spends most of the episode being quite annoyed with Luke. At times I find it hard to believe that Ollie would be that carefree about talking to a werewolf, especially since she has been attacked by one before. However, when Ollie gets attacked by a demon Luke tries to protect her in his werewolf form and is unable to deny it later on.  

Lilith & Sebastian

“I'm here now, son.” 

Sebastian turns out to be not-quite-dead, thanks to the new season’s antagonist Lilith. How exactly their relationship fits together remains to be seen. As Lilith states in the hospital she can’t have children, but maybe that is only true for a very specific way. When Lilith was in the hospital, I first feared she might start to eat the children, but that was not the case - and it interesting to see that almost vulnerable longing for these babies. It is almost touching if it weren’t for the fact that she is a powerful demon who thanks nice-guy!Tim for his kind words by letting a demon possess him. It was really a shame because he really seemed like a good guy, and even though he was a random guy I felt sorry for him and his wife. And the demon in him was really creepy, especially during the fight against Clary. So far it’s not clear what Lilith actually wants to accomplish, but there seem to be 33 more demons waiting to join the party. Am I the only one who thought the demon Lilith was talking to in the end looks a bit like an evil chicken?

Simon, Maia, Izzy and Raphael

“You're the new weapons master? Izzy, that is perfect for you.“

There is not much time spend on Simon, Maia, Izzy or Raphael, but they’re not forgotten and their parts are not less important.

Simon is more or less forced to entertain the Seelie Queen and her court, or otherwise she wouldn’t have let Maia go at the end of last season. Alberto Rosende gives us another beautiful part of a song, and the Seelie Queen is pleased as well. However, her true reason for having Simon at her court is to brand him with a mark. Simon has no idea what it is, and it quickly fades. When he is allowed to leave the court, Maia - who was worried about his absence - soon forgives him for leaving without saying anything.

While Clary has been made an official Shadowhunter and Alec has been offered a promotion to Idris, izzy has been made weapons master at the New York institue, and she helps Clary to find her new wepaons and later joins JAce and Alec in the investigation of the demon attack. Having Izzy be the new weapons master fits perfectly, and after her long journey of recovering after the Yin Feng it’s great to see her in this position.

Rapahel has probably the least amount of screen time, but to make up for that he has a nice little moment with Magnus that reminds us of their connection. He gets a vampire tranquilizer from Magnus claiming it is for himself. A few scenes later we see him using it on another vampire for what looks like some form of experiment. Raphael is using light, so this is probably bad news for Simon.

A good opening for the new season

“I sang you a song about nature!”

There is a lot to like about the new episode and as it is often the case I enjoy episode especially when they make the smaller scenes work within the episodes.

For starters, Clary’s and Jace’s fight scene: I cannot help it, I love all the fight scenes in Shadowhunters. They are so well done, they always managed to give us nice character moments along with it, and they are just all around badass. And it just makes sense? These people are fighting all the time, their job is to hunt demons - so yes, of course they need to train. A lot of shows (that are not anime) don’t really take the time to show that on a regular basis, but it is great that they include it here.

I was also very happy when the Shadowhunters met Catarina in the hospital. It was nice to see her again! And another encounter that was well done was Charlie - the guy that Izzy met at the hospital when she tried to get some candy there was so nice and friendly, it was refreshing. Their conversation was nothing special or super interestng, but it was a nice moment anyway. He was cleary interested in her and she was sort of reluctant, but he stayed polite and respectful, so it worked. I hope this guy won’t fall victim to a demon attack or something similar.

Having read the books I can only say that I’m looking forward to what kind of story the writers can come up with for Alec and Magnus. They won’t be stuck on vacation for a season and just send in some pictures every now and then, and it’s exciting to know that even after having read the books there is no way of knowing what will happen next. There are a few ideas what could happen, but seeing how Simon got his mark there could be all kinds of twists on the book’s story. In this rare case I can’t say that I’m disappointed because the writing of the show has been really good so far.

All in all I’m mostly impressed how the episode managed to have all these little plots in it but still make it feel like one whole episode, one story, where many people have a part in it but it is still all connected. Maybe that is because despite everyone having their own little story they still relate to other stories as well. Luke might be busy with dealing with Ollie, but he still has an open ear for Clary. Maia worries about Simon, but she’s also concerned with Luke’s “Ollie-problem”. Luke is not a Shadowhunter anymore, but he’ll send his Shadowhunter friends after the demon, and when the Jace, Alec and Izzy go to the hospital to investigate, they meet Magnus’ friend Catarina who’s worried about Magnus. Clary’s and Jace’s little secret is connected to Sebastian and therefore to Lilith, who is behind the demon’s attack in the first place, and it all comes together so wonderfully that I can’t help but be amazed by the amount of plot the writers managed to put into this episode without making it feel like it’s going to explore from the mass of things that happen.

Kudos to you, Shadowhunters creators!

Next: The Powers That Be (spoilers)

The Warlocks’ magic is becoming corrupted by a demonic presence while Izzy and Luke try to track down more information on the recent series of possessions.

In the next episode, the Institue is under attack - again - and some Shadowhunters are quick to respond with racism - again. We’re also introduced to the new High Warlock of Brooklyn, Lorenzo Rey. Going by promo, sneak peek and press release, this episode will focus more on Magnus and Alec, as well as Izzy and Luke.
