when chise breaks down at the sight of the frightened dragon for sale, elias tells her that those are not her emotions, that she shouldnt let them overtake her - but they are her emotions, that dragon is her, and there was never a possibility that she wouldnt follow it on its flight over london.
shaking cryig throwing up. HOW have i never realised this before. did i watch and read this scene with my eyes closed every time? each rewatching... each rereading... it stood in front of me staring into my soul... but i was blind...... oh my god
Tumblr media
i think there is a convo to be had about how chises dragon curse - for all of its confusing mechanics - functions less as a plot point and more of a physical manifestation of the character growth chise has yet to undertake, and an unwillingness to reckon with the person she is past the roles she serves in the lives of others
chise takes this curse on when she returns to the auction house, and location is everything here. at its core, this curse is anger, hatred, fear, pain, and a deep desire to return to comfort - destructive emotions that rip apart all it touches. when chise breaks down at the sight of the frightened dragon for sale, elias tells her that those are not her emotions, that she shouldnt let them overtake her - but they are her emotions, that dragon is her, and there was never a possibility that she wouldnt follow it on its flight over london. seeing as things have "worked out" for her til now, chise hasnt yet reckoned with the gravity of what it meant to sell her life away. she hasnt reckoned with the hatred and anger and pain that she still harbors - unfortunately, moving to a quaint little english cottage does not undo a lifetime of neglect. her attempts to fix those around her, philomela being a prime example, will only get her so far. eventually she will have to look within, and i dont think shes done more than dip her toes in. "this is my past, these sad things happened to me, now things are better" is not the end of her self-reflection. now that we know the past she carries with her, what does all of that mean for her? what kind of person is she? who will she become?
im thinking too about this recurring theme of "atavism." its a key feature in tambs dragons, who are able to evolve at will to suit their needs, and yori also mentions it when noting chises appearance. atavism is the reoccurrence of dormant or ancestral traits, and you could make the argument that its also functioning metaphorically here. evolving to suit the world around you, past burdens and trauma reemerging when its unexpected or inconvenient... my thoughts on this are loose right now
theres this concept that we've been getting, too, that chises dragon curse is something temporary. arc 1 left us with the idea that her two curses must remain in balance, in perpetuity, for her to survive. but theres this new interpretation of it being something that serves her for now, but she might shed it once it fulfills its purpose
Tumblr media Tumblr media
continuing with the idea of the dragon curse as a sort of... idk, ptsd metaphor, what are these two examples from ch 98 implying? that her negative emotions will serve her when it comes time? that this sort of baggage cant be exorcised away? framing the dragon curse as temporary broaches the possibility of chise one day being cured of it, but what does that mean? and should she be?
(of course, the 'future chise' we see in ch 1 doesnt have a visible left hand, but is that meant to be a literal glimpse into the future, anyway? theres also a dragon made of vines behind her in that panel, didya notice it?)
i mentioned the auction house at the beginning because i feel that if chise sheds the dragon curse, it will be in much the same way she attained it. chise has been told that she is free, she is loved, she has told her "mother" that shes moving on with her life. but all of this is just the beginning - and lets be real, i dont think elias is putting her into therapy. joseph is the only character i can think of who is truly, earnestly pushing chise toward the difficult self-reflection she needs. im excited to see what he says when she taps into her "cursed fury"
this is why im so excited that we are being told explicitly, time and again, that things are about to go really bad for chise. tamb is such a masterwork of character writing, it is so incredibly emotionally intelligent and gives so much grace and patience to its characters. i have no doubt that chises character arc is going to go in such a spectacular direction

WHY ? THEY BEGIN TO OVERFLOW . . .
[ˈʊnfɛrˌgɛŋlɪç; ˌʊnfɛrˈgɛŋlɪç] adj . everlasting, unfadying, undying.
Tumblr media
independent frieren from sousou no frieren / frieren: beyond journey's end. penned by lily 25+ / selective, small, and attempting to be spoiler free.
RULES .
Tumblr media
mun is over 25 / minors and non rp-blogs do not interact.
any spoilers will be tagged 'frieren spoilers' . mun has finished the manga as it updates as of now , so she'll default her verse to early main storyline and once more active, divide it into the story arcs thus far !
manga psd made by me, please do not steal, coloring psd made by animangacaps  , while any other graphics on this blog were made by me as the manga ones were .  border header by petra-rals , divider by @cafekitsune !
standard procedure, no info-modding or god-modding, frieren is a legendary mage of immense power and knowledge presently over one thousand years old. she is incredibly dangerous, incredibly lazy, but at the end of the day she is unbelievably powerful. proceed with caution if you're set on fighting her, as i tend to avoid fight threads, the odds are unlikely anyway given her lazy nature but still. she is incredibly wise and silly at the same time , callous and surprisingly thoughtful ( sometimes) and as her ‘time’ moves so much slower than other people, my writing aims to reflect that.
this rule of my boundaries set also applies to drama , callouts , and vague-posting. alongside homophobia / transphobia / racism and any form of unkind , inhumane conduct or bigotry will not be tolerated here. kindness will, but immaturity and cruel behavior will not.
while not unkillable, all fight scenes or conflict i'd like to plot out with you via primarily dms / my inbox as for now my ims are broken ! frieren can lose in a fight, as mentioned by frieren herself that in her lifespan she's lost at least eleven times , that said, with her hunger for more spells and grimoires, she will only increase in knowledge .
as i continue exploring frieren, which is a very low key blog, expect slow replies please, and be patient as i will be with you, this is a very easygoing paced space! :) ! that said i will never pressure you into replies, so please go at your own pace too ! in terms of writing length, i tend to match my partner but have no real expectation of length or quantity as long as my passion is matched and i have something to work with. i am perfectly fine winging it and plotting just as much.
at some point, i will be adding verses ex: wha, clamp, mahoyome, ex, series not part of her canon . as of now i am only writing within her own universe , so please be patient with me as i explore her unique character .
as far as ‘ shipping ‘ goes, the likelihood is nonexistent due to how frieren processes time, her own near immortal lifespan, and frieren herself. i feel sousou no frieren also is more heavy on the emphasis of the bonds of platonic and familial carry many of her new and old relationships. if it happens romantically (?), it's gonna be v rare, v plotted, and another 50 years long, and the only 'ship' i really see would ship is frieren / himmel . tl;dr: it's not the focus.
i do not reflect nor represent frieren , we are two different people, one fictional with her own set of actions and mindsets i don't echo as a person mun and muse are separate packages , my only goal is to write my own insight and thoughts from my vantage point to the best of my ability to do frieren justice in my own way.
i can't really think of anything else right now, but thanks a ton for reading ! can't wait to interact with you .
HEY , CAN I REMEMBER JUST FOR TODAY ?

hall of fame mahoyome posts
Tumblr media
It's curious to me, how the general consensus among others when it comes to Chise's curses are "bad; we need to get rid of it (we just don't know how.)" Which, considering they are both curses made of pain and suffering, makes sense why someone wouldn't want to keep those around.
We (the audience) know vaguely how the curses interact with each other. The dragon's curse: made from strong emotions of anger and despair, provides Chise with her strength and durability against both magical and physical elements, at the cost of her own strength one day tearing herself apart. Cartaphilus' curse prevents her from dying, but offers no protection against injury or decay. Together they "keep each other in check"-- Cartaphilus will keep her alive, the dragon will keep her strong.
Tumblr media
A lot of things have happened in the past arc that make it easy to forget the fundamentals of the first season. When the series started, Chise was a few steps away from walking off a roof. Even after she arrived in England, it took a long time before she decided that maybe life wasn't so bad. Her entire life up until that point had been nothing but misery; abandoned and alone, she had no one to protect her from the constant targeting and harassment by both fae and humans alike. She believed that the only way to escape her torment was through death... I think its a facet of her character that goes unfairly unrecognized a lot (especially after the first arc).
When she's in England and is going through her mental/psychological character development, she is still facing the imminent threat of her weak sleigh beggey body constantly failing her. Using magic exacerbates her condition, causing her to be sick and/or incapacitated for significant stretches of time. It's painful, it's uncomfortable, it's frustrating. By the time she realizes she wants to live, her clock is already running quite short.
Her solution is handed to her on a rusted platter. To be "just like everyone else", for once. Finally.
Tumblr media
Going to school, hanging out with friends, using magic without it killing her-- all things shes never been able to do before. All thanks to the curses trapped in her. These things that should be considered a horribly tragic fate have now become her salvation. Both physically and mentally, she's the strongest and most resilient she's ever been. Yet, when faced with the idea of liberating her from her curses...
The curses only work the way they do because they're in sync with each other. Taking away either curse would leave her vulnerable to the other-- the dragon's curse would slowly overwhelm her into a brutally agonizing death, while Cartaphilus' curse would leave her to live and suffer through the constant breaking down of her sleigh beggey body.
Tumblr media
When told about the reality of her curses and just how severe they are (not just to her, but to the people around her), she doesn't seem to completely understand what that may mean for herself and her future. Or perhaps, she just doesn't care. After a life where pain and suffering was her "normal", she finally has the means to create something meaningful and positive out of herself. How could that possibly be a bad thing?
She understands on some level that these curses were only ever meant to be temporary. Elias' original goal, to keep Chise alive in spite of her sleigh beggey curse, has not changed. Tacking on two more curses was not a part of the plan, and though they've offered a temporary solution and some time, curses are called curses for a reason. They cannot be relied upon. They've got to go.
Tumblr media
But getting rid of those curses (both, or either) essentially puts her back at square one. Back to the pain, discomfort, and illness. She probably won't be able to use magic without hurting herself, too. She's gained freedom in both mind and body for the first time in her life. Sure, she encounters a few hiccups, but considering what she's used to, this is a big step up.
Something has finally given her the power and freedom to spread her wings and fly. Would she be able to clip her own feathers just because that power is "supposed" to be "bad"?
Could she? Could you?
Through it all, everyone she's come across has appointed her curses as a problem. Everyone, except...

Elias will die
The more I think about the themes and story for The Ancient Magus Bride the more convinced I am that Elias will eventually die in the end game. I might be wrong (and I hope I am), but hear me out.
Tumblr media
*also forgive my english*
We've constantly seen Chise sacrificing herself and nearly dying every time she does (almost always willingly) while Elias is always seen doing the almost polar opposite. He's always trying to figure out how to keep Chise alive and with him and doesn't want her out of his life, to the point that he would willingly sacrifice someone else (someone whom he was jealous of and Chise cared for) to do it.
Elias' selfishness and Chise's selflessness are their beginning arcs. And in the beginning Chise had always been (well, mostly) open to Elias (at least to the best that she could) about what she wanted and her feelings on certain things, and especially about how much more she wanted to know of him. Meanwhile Elias was the recluse, who kept a lot hidden as well as his feelings and intentions. Basically out of the two, it was obviously Chise who was the most human.
Tumblr media
However, in recent chapters it seems as if something's changed. I might be jumping the gun when I say this, as there still hasn't been that many chapters yet, but it feels as though Chise is becoming more distant and closed up than before. She's making more friends, yes, but that's a given when you go to a school. But as I read the recent chapters, I felt Chise becoming more vague and with the addition of Rahab telling her that it was okay to keep secrets and lie, I can only imagine how much more that will affect Chise's current character. But for now it remains something to be further seen.
Which then brings us back to Elias. I wouldn't be exaggerating when I say how proud I am right now of Elias' progress. As someone mentioned before, he's come so far from the dark and vague recluse to the person he is now. In the recent chapters, he is actually seen reaching out to others for advice and expressing his thoughts to them rather than try and process everything himself.
Tumblr media
He never had willing interaction with other characters like this, but now we can see him establishing a relationship (of some sort) with everyone he would have cared less for before. He even went to Simon one chapter to seek advice and help him and another from an attack. ("not friends", yeah right. You mean 'not friends YET')
Tumblr media
He is more aware of others around him and is even showing (dare I say it) care for others. Maybe he hasn't reached that level where he would outright sit down with someone and ask about how they're doing and willingly have tea together, but he is starting to take into account what others want or why they would do something. He is more thoughtful and open than he ever was in the beginning. (And that's beautiful)
Which brings me to the point of all this.
Elias is becoming more human. And not just that, I think he's becoming more human than Chise is, and I'm beginning to believe that is the direction their character arcs are going.
As Chise becomes a greater mage, Elias becomes the more human.
That gives me the worry that something terrible is going to happen in future chapters. Something about Chise and Elias.
I know Elias fears doing anything that Chise would dislike now, and would believe anything Chise would tell him. Combine that with the idea that Chise might start lying to him or keep secrets, I have great fear for how the manga might end.
The fear that someone might die, and that someone being Elias.
(Especially as the author is known to enjoy torturing her characters, apparently)
Tumblr media
As Elias continues to develop as a human, I believe that we will see him go through all the stages of life any human would. Joy, friendship, pain, loss, etc. But that is why I also expect that he will die.
Dying is a part of what a human is. Someone who would continue to live forever would be considered something not human. A mage could live forever but Elias in all his life have always been fascinated by humanity. He had even sought Rahab after parting with Lindel because he wanted to learn human mannerisms.
Tumblr media
It would have so easy for him to despise humans after the villagers attacked him and Lindel. Yet he had wanted still to live among them, to be accepted by them, to be them. To be human.
And that's why I believe Elias' final act as human would be his death. Maybe he will sacrifice himself, maybe it will be an effort to save someone. Maybe it won't happen at all. But Chise dying instead would have been predictable from the start, as that is what we are told over and over again. But Elias dying is something that is so unimaginable that it would make sense. And if he does, he would have done it. He would have finally been human.
But all in all, this all speculation, and there is still a lot more chapters to go. And maybe I'm wrong. But I want to thank the TAMB / Mahayome group chat for bouncing my ideas and making all this analysis possible! Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

to be honest, the absolute peak of the college arc for me was elias' and simon's relationship developement. i just know that simon had butterflies in his stomach when elias confessed to him called him his friend, that he still has them because only a week had passed since then, and that he was veeery excited to visit him today. i've been recalling this conversation almost every day for the past 1,5 years, even in times when my interest in mahoyome cooled down. and now i'm learning that simon is (apparently) going to accompany elias and chise everywhere. hahaha. haha. i am gonna be ill
