Effective Magnolia Scale Treatment: Protecting Your Trees from Harmful Pests
Magnolia trees are known for their elegance, beauty, and the charm they add to any landscape. However, one of the most common threats to their health is the magnolia scale infestation. This pest not only damages the tree's overall appearance but can also compromise its health and vitality if not addressed promptly. Implementing effective magnolia scale treatment is crucial for preserving the health and beauty of your trees.
In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about magnolia scale, the damage it can cause, and the best methods to treat and prevent this infestation.
What Is Magnolia Scale?
Magnolia scale is one of the largest soft scale insects, primarily affecting magnolia trees. These pests are oval-shaped and grow up to half an inch in length. Their color ranges from pinkish-orange to dark brown, often covered with a waxy coating. They usually appear on the branches and stems of magnolia trees.
Lifecycle of Magnolia Scale
Understanding the lifecycle of magnolia scale is essential to developing an effective treatment plan. These pests typically follow this cycle:
Spring: Overwintering female scales begin to lay eggs.
Summer: The eggs hatch into crawlers (immature scales) that move to new locations on the tree.
Late Summer/Early Fall: Crawlers mature into adults, creating new infestations.
Winter: Adult females hibernate on tree branches, preparing to lay eggs in the spring.
Tumblr media
Signs of Magnolia Scale Infestation
Early detection is critical to controlling magnolia scale. Some of the most common signs of infestation include:
1. Sticky Substances
Magnolia scale excretes a sticky substance called honeydew, which often coats leaves, branches, and nearby objects.
2. Sooty Mold
The honeydew attracts fungi, which can develop into black, sooty mold on the tree's surface.
3. Wilting Leaves
An infestation can cause leaves to wilt, yellow, or fall prematurely due to the scale feeding on the tree's sap.
4. Decline in Tree Health
Severe infestations can lead to stunted growth, branch dieback, and a general decline in the tree’s health.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s essential to act immediately to prevent further damage.
Why Magnolia Scale Is Dangerous
Magnolia scale is more than just a nuisance; it poses a significant threat to your tree’s health. Here’s why:
1. Nutrient Depletion
Magnolia scale feeds on the sap of the tree, robbing it of essential nutrients. Over time, this weakens the tree, making it vulnerable to diseases and environmental stressors.
2. Spread of Diseases
The honeydew excreted by magnolia scale attracts other pests, such as ants and wasps, and can promote fungal infections.
3. Aesthetic Damage
Magnolia trees are often planted for their ornamental value. Infestation can severely impact their appearance, reducing the beauty of your landscape.
Addressing the issue early through proper treatment ensures your tree remains healthy and vibrant.
Best Methods for Magnolia Scale Treatment
Several effective methods can be used to treat magnolia scale. Let’s break them down into natural, chemical, and professional approaches.
1. Natural Magnolia Scale Treatment
For those looking to use environmentally friendly methods, natural solutions can be effective, especially in the early stages of infestation.
a. Pruning Infested Branches
Removing heavily infested branches can prevent the spread of scale to other parts of the tree. Be sure to dispose of the branches far from your property to eliminate the risk of reinfestation.
b. Applying Horticultural Oils
Horticultural oils can suffocate the scale insects without harming the tree. These oils are best applied during the dormant season or when crawlers are active.
c. Encouraging Beneficial Insects
Natural predators, such as ladybugs and parasitic wasps, feed on magnolia scale and can help reduce their population. Avoid using broad-spectrum insecticides that could harm these beneficial insects.
2. Chemical Treatments
For severe infestations, chemical treatments may be necessary to eradicate magnolia scale.
a. Systemic Insecticides
Systemic insecticides are absorbed by the tree and kill scale insects when they feed on the sap. These treatments are highly effective and can provide long-lasting protection.
b. Insecticidal Soaps
Insecticidal soaps are a safer alternative for treating scale crawlers. These soaps disrupt the pests' cell membranes, effectively killing them on contact.
c. Timing Is Key
The best time to apply chemical treatments is during the crawler stage, as this is when the insects are most vulnerable. Use treatments in late summer or early fall for optimal results.
3. Professional Magnolia Scale Treatment Services
While DIY methods can be effective, severe infestations often require professional intervention. Experts like Tree Doctor USA can assess the severity of the problem and implement customized solutions.
Benefits of Professional Services:
Accurate Diagnosis: Professionals can identify the extent of the infestation and recommend the best course of action.
Advanced Treatments: Access to commercial-grade insecticides and tools for effective treatment.
Long-Term Solutions: Preventive care to protect your tree from future infestations.

Preventing Magnolia Scale Infestations
Prevention is always better than cure. By adopting proactive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of magnolia scale infestation.
1. Regular Tree Inspections
Inspect your magnolia trees regularly for signs of scale, especially during the growing season.
2. Maintain Tree Health
A healthy tree is better equipped to resist pests. Provide adequate water, nutrients, and pruning to keep your tree in top condition.
3. Use Preventive Sprays
Dormant oils applied during the winter can prevent overwintering scales from laying eggs in the spring.
4. Partner with Professionals
Schedule regular tree maintenance with a certified arborist to ensure your trees remain healthy and pest-free.

Anyone else miss when Fairytail used to take it self seriously? Back in the early manga days, Mashima went absolutely hard on the world building. Establishing rules and keeping power scaling consistent somewhat; even having darker themes to the show. Characters had more emotional weight to them, with them actually taking each other seriously.
Tumblr media
This moment, there’s no tears involved but you can tell how much impact it has on the characters. Especially Gray. Natsu doesn’t kick Gray to the side and takeover the fight in a comedic way, in fact he even tells Gray to use the spell if he wants to. He’s not smiling, there’s no exaggerated goofy expressions. Instead his expression is the focal point of the panel, we see the conviction in his eyes. That he means what he says, he doesn’t want his rival at the time, Gray to die. Yet in this moment, he turns away entrusting Gray with the choice. But this time he’s reminded that there are people who will be affected by his decision to use the spell or not. Without the use of any tears, we can feel how hard this moment hits for Gray. Someone who has felt like he never deserved to live in this world. The arc take itself seriously and we see Gray remember Natsu’s words. They hold value to him and he chooses to fight for himself as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In these panels, we focus on his expression. There’s real stakes in these fights and this was back when there was no healer too. We get to see real wounds and what happens when wizards take on more than they should. They get hurt. We even see this in the first trip Natsu and Lucy go on together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see the guildmembers lives are taken seriously, that there is real consequences to them going on jobs. That being a wizard is dangerous, theres so much camaraderie and emotion shown in the early manga we really get a feel for just how much of a family Fairytail is to each other. They’ll even scale a snowy mountain littered with monsters just for the slim chance to drag them back to magnolia town. Betraying their pride to admit to their rivals they care. Aka Natsu and Gray. But you know what was great about it? It wasn’t all dark Fairytail knew when to be funny too, there was many light moments. Fairytail has always been fun goofy adventures but it knew when to take itself seriously.
Then we have 100yq…
Tumblr media
This is supposed to be a serious moment. Lucy was literally burnt. Natsu’s arm is torn to shreds, we see his eyes wide and sweat trailing down his skin. This is obviously not a comedic moment. So tell me why instead of getting to focus on the characters feelings and how this may affect them. We get this…
Tumblr media
There is no detail to the expressions, their very simplified and cartoony. And we also have, Lucy being treated as fanservice… again. But the worst part about it is this is so out of character for Natsu. The way he looks at Lucy here, its as if she’s a bother to him. He completely disrespects her and downright sexually assaults her. They dumbed his character down to… this. This is the same Natsu that shed tears at the idea of Gray dying for his sake, the same Natsu whos blood boiled to see Erza scared, the same Natsu who took on an entire guild because of the unfair treatment to Yukino.
Yet he can’t even treat Lucy fairly here. This is something the old Natsu would not do, it’s so out of character. And Lucy is out of character here too, the old Lucy would’ve punched him square in the jaw for trying this.
In fact in the past she even threatened to leave the team because she thought he was only having her on the team for her blonde hair.
Lucy isn’t afraid to hold him accountable and we see Natsu reassure her feelings and take them seriously.
Tumblr media
If this was 100yq her feelings wouldn’t have been taken seriously. They would’ve been played as a joke, they would’ve said something like. “What do you mean it could’ve been anybody? You’re the only girl in the guild with blonde hair, I doubt Laxus would wanna do the job.”
But Natsu didn’t say something like that, we see Lucy’s conflicted expression at knowing he chose her because of her personality. And we’re shown that her feelings here are serious. Whereas in 100yq we don’t even get to see her face/reaction to his careless disregard of her burns. All we see is the side of her face, all the focus is on her chest for the joke.
Bonus Last point. This here is an exact example of what I mean. The serious weight of this situation we get to see clearly. Their expressions are the focal point, were shown this is a moment with weight to its whereas in 100yq the panels focus is on Lucy’s chest. We were robbed.

Protect Your Trees from Japanese Maple Scale
Japanese Maple Scale (Lopholeucaspis japonica) is a formidable pest that poses a significant challenge to homeowners. Belonging to the family Diaspididae, the Japanese Maple Scale has spread throughout the United States, infesting many host trees and causing substantial damage if left untreated. This pest requires vigilance and proactive management. By understanding the life cycle and having plant health care professionals implement effective control measures, homeowners can mitigate the damage caused by this persistent insect pest.
Tumblr media
Appearance
The mature female covers of the Japanese Maple Scale are oyster shell-shaped, measuring less than ⅛” (3 mm) in length. Adult females are purple, but covered by a dark brown shed exoskeleton with a thin white coating. The male covers of this insect are similar in appearance but smaller in size and have a slightly more elongated shape.
One of the key features to look out for when identifying the Japanese Maple Scale is the color of the young scales, or crawlers. These tiny young scales are purple and can be found in the bark cracks of infested trees, as the scales can often be wedged into these crevices.
Life Cycle
The life cycle of the Japanese Maple Scale consists of three distinct stages: egg, immature, and adult. Understanding this life cycle is necessary for effectively managing scale populations and preventing damage to host trees.
The life cycle begins with the tiny eggs laid by adult female scales. These eggs are typically deposited beneath the protective waxy cover and are difficult to spot without close inspection. After incubation, the eggs hatch, releasing the immature nymphs known as crawlers.
These crawlers are the mobile stage of the scale and can quickly spread to other parts of infested trees or adjacent healthy plants. As the crawlers feed on plant sap, they go through several molting stages called instars, gradually growing larger and developing a protective shell-like covering, known as a “test.”
Once the final instar is reached, the immature nymphs transition into the adult stage, where the cycle repeats.
Japanese Maple Scale Tree Damage
Japanese Maple Scale can wreak havoc on trees, causing significant damage and leading to a gradual decline in their health. These troublesome insects feed on the sap of trees, robbing them of essential nutrients and energy. As a result, the affected trees often experience twig and branch dieback, making the foliage sparse and thin.
The damage caused by the Japanese Maple Scale manifests as a bumpy white texture on the branches of heavily infested trees. The scales create this white, waxy covering during feeding and reproduction. The presence of this distinctive texture is a clear indicator of a scale infestation.
Over time the affected tree may lose vigor and become more susceptible to other stresses and diseases. Thinning foliage, early leaf drop, and twig and branch dieback are often observed as the scale populations increase and spread throughout the tree.
Host Plants
Japanese Maple Scale is known to attack a wide range of host plants. Some of the most commonly affected ones include dogwoods, elms, maples, magnolias, and lilacs. These plants, belonging to various plant families, are highly susceptible to infestations by the Japanese Maple Scale.
Management
Effective integrated pest management of the Japanese maple scale is crucial for the health and vitality of infested trees. Controlling the Japanese Maple Scale can be challenging due to the quick development of their waxy coating.
Armored scales, like the Japanese Maple Scale, are named for the hard, waxy cover that protects the insect. This armor can prevent some traditional contact insecticides from penetrating and effectively controlling the scale populations. However, several treatment options can help manage this insect pest. For light infestations, pruning out infested branches can be effective.
In cases of heavy infestations, removal could be necessary to prevent spreading to healthy trees. However, some treatment methods can manage scale infestations.
Insecticides
Systemic insecticides absorbed by the plant’s vascular system can provide long-term control by targeting the scales at various life cycle stages. This treatment option can be applied as a foliar spray to coat the leaves or as a bark spray to protect the plant from the inside out.
Horticultural oil is a treatment practice that works by suffocating the scales and is most effective during the crawler stage when the waxy coating is still developing. The oil must be applied thoroughly, covering both the tops and undersides of the leaves and the branches of the infested trees. Horticultural oil applications can also work when applied in late fall because the oil dissolves the waxy coating and exposes the scale to cold weather conditions.
Biological control methods, such as parasitoid wasps and other natural enemies, can also be employed. These beneficial insects prey on scales, helping to keep their populations in check.
Preventive Methods of Controlling Japanese Maple Scale
Implementing proper cultural practices can help reduce the risk of scale infestation. Good irrigation and mulching techniques promote the overall health of the plants, making them more resistant to infestations. Consistent watering and mulching can also prevent stress and minimize the risk of scale outbreaks.
Inspecting new plant material before introducing plants to a garden is crucial in preventing the spread of the Japanese Maple Scale. By carefully examining new plants for signs of infestation, such as adult scales or crawler activity, you can avoid introducing scale-infested plants to your garden.

Gray and Wendy brotp
“Considering the amount of blood lost, Lockser’s fortunate Wendy got to her when she did. As it stands, though, I see no reason why she wouldn’t make a full recovery.”
“And Gray?”
“Hmph... He could do with a lecture on how foolish it is to ice over his wounds instead of receiving proper treatment, but he ought to be fine as well.”
Gray’s focus on Porlyusica and Evergreen’s whispered discussion didn’t hold much further past the words “full recovery”.
The nightmare world he’d been living in less than an hour ago, the crushing weight of his grief, dispelled by a girl who’s head barely reached his chest...
Gray doubted Wendy fully understood the gravity- the depth- of what she had done.
It was understandable, he supposed. She hadn’t been with them when the matter had first come to light, back on Galuna Island, and he’d never seen fit to bring it up with her once she’d joined. No sense filling her young head with tales of his losses. Not when she had enough of her own to deal with.
Still, the warm, living body lying beside him, light blue tresses fanned out delicately on the ground as Porlyusica tutted and hemmed over the state of their injuries was like a fantasy. She was still here. He’d thought that she had died, like Ur, offered up her blood like Ultear had her youth, for him. That he was alive only at the cost of yet another person’s sacrifice.
Wendy had spared him from that fate.
It occurred to him, as his consciousness faded, that while he hadn’t been once more saddled with a life-debt he could never pay back, he wasn’t sure if he’d ever be able to thank her properly.
Gray leaned more than a bit against Juvia, watching as their errant Dragon Slayers embraced close friends and teammates, the sun shimmering off the crystalline orb that was Acnologia’s final resting place. When but an hour ago their world looked as if it was ending, it now seemed to release a breath of relief. They had won.
The collective mages’ ecstatic murmuring and cheers of victory were shattered by a cry of pain.
Gray’s head whipped around just in time to see a shock of deep blue hair flutter to the ground.
“Wendy!”
He was hardly the only person to cry out at the sight. The pink haired girl, Chelia, he recalled, dropped to her knees beside Wendy, big blue eyes wide with worry as she surveyed the blood soaked state of the bandages wrapped around her thigh. Gray had noticed the injury back when they’d first reclaimed the Port, but Wendy had paid it little mind, dutifully healing Erza while they all waited anxiously. It was with a sickening jolt that he realized, now hours later, that her upper thigh had been pierced clean through.
Forget fighting- She had walked on that leg?!
Dimly, he remembered her doing just that, while supporting Juvia no less. The pair of them drawing closer to him, smiling. It had been the last thing he saw before losing consciousness.
No words needed to be exchanged for him and Juvia to rush over together.
“-this close to the femoral artery, no wonder it’s hemorrhaging.” Chelia was muttering under her breath, small, pale hands pressing sodden bandages against the entry and exit wounds. There was hardly any white left to be seen on the wrappings.
“It’s ok- I’m... I’m ok,” inconceivably, Wendy was weakly muttering reassurances, even while she seemed unable to sit up from where she laid on the pavement. Stifling what might’ve been a whimper, Juvia shuffled forward on her knees, and carefully guided Wendy’s upper body to lay on her lap. She breathed whispers Gray couldn’t catch into the crown of her head, gently brushing errant strands of midnight blue off Wendy’s face.
“Can I- is there a way I can help?” Gray felt a prick of shame at relying on a 15 year old for guidance, but this girl was a healer, and he’d long ago learned their word was law when it came to treating injuries. Though, she wasn’t using any healing magic now... Had she exhausted herself in all the fighting?
Before this train of thought could go any further, Chelia’s eyes snapped up to him. He saw them flicker with recognition, and she asked briskly, “You have Ice Magic, right?”
He nodded mutely.
“Put your hands where mine are and apply pressure.” hesitating for only an instant, Gray cupped both sides of the wound just as Chelia slipped her hands free. The warm, tacky feeling of blood coated his palms, and Wendy’s leg jumped under his much larger hands, but he held fast.
“Blood vessels constrict under colder temperatures.” Chelia’s gaze bored into him. Gray was aware of the growing commotion around them as more people noticed the state Wendy was in, but he didn’t dare look away from the pair of cobalt eyes that demanded his attention. They were almost the same color as Wendy’s hair. “In order to stop the bleeding, you need to emit enough cold to slow the blood flow and encourage clotting, without lowering the temperature too much and causing tissue damage. Can you do that?”
“Yes.” Gray was calling frost to his hands before the words even left his mouth. His own body barely felt the cold anymore, but he still remembered Ur’s dire warnings about what temperatures were dangerous for the average human, and how long one could withstand them before frostbite and necrosis set it. As long as things stayed above forty degrees, he could maintain this for close to an hour before it became hazardous for Wendy.
Wendy gave a hoarse noise of discomfort at the sudden cold, but she seemed to be fighting to stay conscious, eyelids fluttering as her head tilted to and fro. At this close proximity, Gray took note of another wound- a nasty gash- on her right side. It wasn’t bleeding terribly like the wound on her leg, but it looked particularly savage, like it’d been made by talons rather than a blade.
Just what had this war put Wendy through?
“Move! Get out of my way, you fools!”
Never before had Gray been so elated to hear the sharp, steely voice of Fairy Tail’s head Medical Advisor.
Like always, crowds hastened to disperse at Porlyusica’s command, and Gray soon found himself looking up at the gimlet-eyed medicine woman. With an efficiency that spoke of years of experience, Porlyusica knelt and began rummaging through the bag at her side. Without looking up, she gruffly intoned, “Fullbuster, keep that up. Lockser, prevent her from moving around too much. Blendy-” Gray thought he saw Chelia tense, like Porlyusica was about to say something dreadful. The crone herself actually paused, stilling for the briefest moment, before thrusting out a large roll of bandages to the pink-haired girl. “I’m occupied here, and with Wendy in this state, you’re the only other person with any idea how to treat the wounded. I need you to triage those gathered here, and guide whoever’s able in taking care of any injuries. I’ll address those you deem critical shortly. Got that?”
Chelia’s eyes glistened, and her gaze flickered to Wendy’s barely conscious face. Quick as a flash, she kissed her first two fingers, and then pressed them to the other girl’s cheek. Just as swiftly, she leapt to her feet, snatching the roll of bandages with a firm, “Yes, ma’am!” before bounding away to begin her task.
Porlyusica set to work just as quickly, packing some kind of salve onto a square of fabric, and instructing Gray to hold it against the exit wound while she prepared another pad for the entry wound, after which they would bind them in place. At one point, Wendy roused slightly, and she gazed blearily around. Her eyes fell on Porlyusica- specifically, her hair- and Gray’s heart clenched when they quickly filled with tears.
“Chelia... I’m sor-sorry... I’m so s-sorry...” Juvia attempted to shush her gently, but Wendy was inconsolable, weeping softly until exhaustion dragged her back under. When Porlyusica’s work was finally done, Gray retrieved his hands, before an instinct he couldn’t place urged him to fit one of Wendy’s small, limp hands in his own. His thumb traced comforting circles on the back of her hand as his gaze scanned the crowd of assembled mages, eventually falling on the small pink haired girl currently throwing caution to the wind and scolding Erza as she examined a wound on her shoulder.
While most everyone was alive and well- or at least on the way to well- and their enemies were bested, Gray got the distinct impression that their victory was not without sacrifice. It was simply a matter of what it was, and who had paid the price.
~~~~~~
Gray got his answer one week later, as he and Lyon shared a moment of respite from their work repairing the damage done to the Fairy Tail guildhall. The mages from Lamia Scale, Blue Pegasus, and Sabertooth had ruthlessly bowled over the Fairies’ protests, citing that the conflict with Alvarez had been a matter of countries rather than guilds, and took to clearing up Magnolia and the surrounding areas with zeal alongside their fellow Fioreans.
“Chelia can’t use magic anymore?” Gray had to make certain, on the off chance he’d heard Lyon wrong, even if he knew he likely hadn’t. His adoptive brother’s solemn head shake dashed those hopes quite efficiently.
“Ultear was very clear, from what I’ve heard. Unlocking her Third Origin permanently crippled the other two magic containers in her body. Biologically, it isn’t quite the same as if she was a non-mage, but there’s no known remedy for Origins that sustained such damage.” a shadow passed over Lyon’s face, and fist trembled faintly. “To think, the two youngest among us were fighting for their lives, for our lives, in the time it took us to blink.”
Gray ruminated on something he could say to that, with no success. Wendy and Chelia, for all their prodigious talent and combative skill, still evoked in their guildmates an innate urge to protect and shelter them. No matter how irrational it may be, it felt like a failure on their part when their younger companions were harmed. He remembered holding Wendy’s limp, listless body in the dungeons back in Edolas, feeling his stomach drop in that awful moment of panic when he failed to sense even an ounce of magic power within her, like she was... gone. Chelia wasn’t gone, but a piece of her...
“I’m honored to be her guildmate.”
Gray’s gaze snapped back to Lyon.
“It’s very likely that Chelia saved all of our lives, that day.” a fierce, blazing sort of pride overpowered any lingering guilt in his voice. “Against an enemy with such power over time, in the guise of a god, we wouldn’t have stood a chance. In her last act as a mage, Chelia achieved the greatest feat possible for a wielder of her magic; she struck down a god. We all lived to see tomorrow thanks to her devotion to protecting her comrades. To have someone capable of love like that, of strength like that, as a member of my guild... I’m grateful beyond words.”
Tactfully, Gray turned away in order to let Lyon compose himself, not at all because his own eyes grew misty.
Through the small crowd of mages shuffling about, he spotted Wendy, who was sitting beneath an awning alongside Gajeel. She had been expressly forbidden from taking part in any physical labor, owing to the state of her still-healing leg, much to her ire. It had taken almost two days worth of arguing before she was allowed to cast Enchantments on those working to help lighten the load. Natsu and Gajeel, for once, worked together seamlessly as they took it upon themselves to ensure she didn’t strain herself.
Currently, Gajeel seemed to be listening readily as she spoke quietly, his perpetually stern expression giving nothing away. Wendy’s face was obscured due to both the angle and her long, hanging hair, but Gray could see the tension in the way she wrung the fabric of her skirt.
“I don’t think Wendy sees it that way.”
Wendy’s harshest critic had always been herself. When they’d first met, during their duel for Nirvana against the Oracion Seis, her propensity for self-flagellation had been severe enough that she almost became a liability. While Gray liked to think that her time with Fairy Tail and their unconditional, constant support had softened the tone she took with herself, he knew how easy it was to lapse back into old habits.
Whatever else had transpired in the battle with Dimaria, Chelia’s sacrifice was bound to be weighing heavily on the young Enchantress.
“Chelia feels the same.” Lyon’s reverent tone became more somber. “Wendy won’t press the issue with her out of respect, but Chelia’s certain she blames herself for what happened.” faintly, Gray could feel the uncanny coldness- a trait he no doubt shared- when Lyon’s hand came to rest on his shoulder. The icy pressure was welcome; bracing and invigorating. “For Chelia’s sake, and my own- for Wendy’s- keep an eye on her. We’re both familiar with what regret and self-reproach can do to a person.”
Gray thought back to a warped moon, streaming out baleful indigo light... the gentle, heart wrenching strum of a harp... the slick dapple of blood on his brow...
It had been one of the hardest things he’d ever done, accepting Ur’s sacrifice as a gift born out of her love for him. No matter how unworthy he felt, how desperately he wished he could change what had happened, it would have been the height of disrespect to disregard his teacher’s final act. She wanted him to live, without his darkness- his hatred and despair- as weights upon his soul. He didn’t dare fail to abide by that request.
“I don’t want that for her.” Gray didn’t want that for anyone. But the idea of his young teammate- the endlessly kind, selfless, fiercely caring girl he’d come to know- quietly suffocating under that guilt and loathing... it was unthinkable. “I won’t let that happen.”
He might not be able to chase wounds and pain away with a touch like Wendy, but his hands had crafted works of ice unlike any Maker mage before.
He’d be damned if they couldn’t hold his friend together as she threatened to fall apart.
With his hand low on his belly and creeping lower (alone in the dark of his flat consisting of square rooms and artificial light), Jamie could taste her (the sea-salt spray of sweat and clean linen tang of a single dusky nipple as it hardened under his lips and a humid bath of his breath).  He could envision her (the almost invisible tenting of the bed sheet that just barely covered the other nipple as it beseeched him for a fair and equal treatment).
Inhaling and then holding his breath, Jamie found that he could recreate for himself the improbable way Claire resituated herself onto her side when she was spent, her cheek pressed against her forearm.  He could feel the wisp of her breath as delicate as dangling wisteria as she grumbled quietly, somnolently, insinuating a single ankle between his legs.
“Ye look beautiful in the mornin’ sun,” he whispered in his mind’s eye as he traced a finger up her arm. Pulsing beneath his hand and led by imagination alone, he found that his fingertips followed an aimless road (a hearty green vein at the sweat-tacky inner crease of her elbow). His curiosity led him off a marked path and over the culvert between her arm and body to test the curving munros of her buttocks.
“What is that you think you are doing, Fraser?” she asked into the pillow, those well-trained lips heavy in a pout (sated and sleepy, but somehow still aroused).
“Nothing,” he said truthfully.
He had never felt so content to have not a thing to guide him, to limit him.
They had no curfew.
They had no prying eyes to find them.
They had no fear that loose lips would sink ships.
He found himself mesmerized by the silly bits of her – the pulsating, soft heat of her armpit, the mole at the base of her spine (one he suspected she barely knew was there) that grew a single jet-black hair, the almost invisible sliver of toenail on her strangely fat small toe.
He scaled the soft curve of her breast and rappelled its opposing slope like a reckless mountaineer, and carefully walked his fingers across the stable bridge of her well-formed sternum.
“Are ye awake, my Sassenach?” he inquired vaguely, hand slipping beneath the sheet. He hated that she slept in this dizzy waking dream of his.  And so he ghosted across the gentle curve of her belly to the thatch of trimmed hair between her thighs and the heat that resided there like a siren song.  To wake her, to rouse her further.
“I am not even here, Fraser,” she said sleepily, “but you can touch me properly.”
Outside of the dream where his fantasy resided, he wrapped a careful hand around himself. He licked his lips as he tried to transform his calloused fingers and broad palm into her small, delicate touch.  Fingers sinking into bed sheets, he could not recreate the sensation of touching her “properly,” the bits as slick as waterweed and thrumming and begging to roar beneath his attentions.
But some things he could recreate with near one hundred percent fidelity.
Her breath.
Her smell.
Her intonation as her pupils went fathomless.
Her femoral pulse hammering away beneath his lips as he kissed her carefully with his chin clumsily (on purpose) brushing the heat of her.
Those were things that he had memorized.
Those were things that he could call to mind with the easiness of breathing or blinking, reaching to scratch an itch or drifting off to sleep.
He did not pause to entertain the threat that someday all he would have was the imitation of her.  (A memory as fine as could be, but ultimately only the forgery of a masterpiece.)  Instead, he gripped, tugged, let his mouth fall open as he set a rhythm, knowing that his wanting would always be just this way.
His alarm, though (the bloody thing), had a mind of its own.  The twin brass bells chattered and shook. The clock danced across his nightstand and clipped the edge of his water glass with a disconcerting ping, begging to be slapped into silence by his palm.  At the jangling announcement of another day, he groaned, fisted the bed sheets, and tilted his head back.  His fingers (the poor substitute for any lover, let alone one as perfect as Claire) released his cock, and he willed himself to think of something (anything) to make the bobbing, throbbing ache of arousal subside.
Friday.  It was Friday.
Inhaling, he ground the heels of his hands into his eyes.  He wondered what kind of pressure it would take to make his eyeballs burst as he expelled the granules of his dream from the pinched pink corners of his eyes.
In ten hours they would be together.  In ten hours they could drift away together.
He rose from bed with a back that ached in the sweet way that brought a river’s torrent of recollection of the previous evening (Claire glowing on the hay in the stables, her cheeks pinked and glistening, her fingers trembling as she pressed them over what he knew was a hammering heart).  Colonel James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser smiled as he parted his curtains and looked out into the gray of early morning.
Another day.
Those ten hours passed like a century, and when they were reunited and riding north for his cabin from the city, she squeezed his side (quick, pulsing, seeking).  She may have screeched her request (stop!) into his ear, but it was unheard over the mechanical grumble of the motorcycle’s engine and the fierce whipping of the wind past their helmets.  He didn’t need her to say it, though.  From her touch, he knew to stop, and so they pulled into a dusty lay-by dotted with oily puddles and the orange butts of cigarettes.
“Ye okay then, Sassenach?” he asked once they were at a full stop.
“Never better, just seems a shame to let it all pass by at fifty-five miles per hour.”  She inhaled, wetting her lips (it was an unguarded instinct so easily obliged by her that he felt a tightening in his wame like a fist holding on for dear life). “It is truly a beautiful part of our country.”
She stepped over one of the puddles and hoisted herself up onto a great moss-covered rock, brought herself over a gap to another, and then another until she towered over him.
“I am sure you agree.”
“About?”
“That it is beautiful,” she sighed, a hint of faux exasperation shining through as she unfastened her helmet, tossed it to him without warning, and spread her arms out.  He fastened the helmet carefully to the handlebars, watching her tip her head backwards and inhale.  “It is exhilarating to think of land that no man, no woman has touched.  Where no feet have tread.  Where it is just open except for nature. Our kingdom is untouched.”
His voice was light as he teased, “It’s most certainly yer kingdom, ma’am.”
Humming, Claire tented her eyes with the palm of her hand and looked out at the landscape.  “It is yours, too, Fraser.  Maybe we could live here.”
This time (knowing that it was an impossibility - the idea of living here - and knowing that she knew it all the same), his lips released some combination of vowels, and he rose off of the motorbike.  He raked a hand through his hair as he approached her.  “My mam was a fierce nationalist. Didna want a thing to do with the commonwealth.  England was her main problem, no’ so much Wales.  Northern Ireland, weel, that was enough of a mess when she died that I dinna ken what she thought about that. But ye’ll see a white rose bush at the cabin.”
A poem rattled about in her swimming head –
The rose of all the world is not for me.
I want for my part
Only the little white rose of Scotland.
That smells sharp and sweet - and
Breaks the heart.
– and she inhaled, unsteady.
“That’s her doin’, her way of putting a middle finger up to… weel… yer family I’d suppose.”
Claire turned on the rock, the toes of her camel-colored oxfords collecting moss and smudging with grit in the process.  He was smiling at her, his eyes glowing under impossibly long lashes.  She fisted her small hands on her hips and gave him a smile that threatened to steal his breath. ‘Christ ye’re beautiful,’ he thought to say, his lips poised to set the compliment free. But she laughed, interrupting the sentiment, and said, “I am flattered she thought of us with such frequency.”
“Ye’re no’ concerned that she’d likely no’ approve of ye then?” he asked, voice full of mock reproach.  With a mind of their own, his hands fastened to her hips with his thumbs searching out the soft skin of her belly and fingers gripping her waistband.
“I have made a decision where it comes to all things involving you, Fraser,” she said plainly as she cupped one hand along his jaw and laid the other to rest loosely on his shoulder. “And it is that no one will stand in judgment of us.”
“No one?”
“No one,” her echo confirmed as she drew him close. His face was level with her sternum, and she sensed his reaction to the broadness of her statement in the marrow of her bones when his grip tightened.  And with a stunning amount of naieveté for someone so savvy (she was no fool, after all), she concluded, “We have some things to figure out, of course, but time is ours right now, Fraser.”
He kissed the center of her chest (a wayward kiss that was not symbolic as it did not land over her heart and one not meant to arouse; it was undesigned and merely the outlet of his affection for her). He sighed when she brought her fingertips to his hairline.
“We’ve an entire kingdom, Claire.”
“Aye,” she whispered, the affirmation coming from her like slanted cursive.  “That we do.”
After a not insubstantial bit of time there soaking in the pure silence of the place (of each other), they returned to the motorcycle and rode another twenty miles, slowing only for a wayward pair lambs unaccustomed to moving at the pleasure of a human (even for a queen).  At the front of the cabin, Claire took the key from Jamie as he juggled her small bag along and a larger one of his own (she had teased him mercilessly about the size of it before they departed, resulting in a pinch to her arse that made her squeak).
The interior smelled like their previous weekend.
Her perfume.  His aftershave.  Burnt sausage and tattie scones.
She stepped inside and turned to Fraser. She looked at him through the open door and quickly shed her clothes.  He dropped their bags on the front stoop and stuttered a step as he made it up the stairs with his trousers slipping to his knees. Freed of clothes, he lifted her, made a perch on the table behind the sofa where a week earlier their bodies had been joined again and again.
“Take your kingdom, Fraser,” she whispered.
And then her mouth absorbed his growls, his body joined her fully, and his lips procured unendangered moans that rolled from her belly and through her lips.
Sixteen miles away Jenny Murray (wife of Ian Alistair Murray, mother of three - James Fraser Murray and Margaret Ellen Murray and Katherine Mary Murray – and sister of her son’s namesake – in that order, thank ye verra kindly) was sitting down for the first uninterrupted portion of her Friday afternoon.  Her lower body ached from carrying an angry, teething Kitty around on her hip all afternoon, and her eyes burned from the ceaseless exhaustion of merely having three children.  Her finger carefully holding the lid on her teapot as she poured, she let herself indulge in the almost-foreign quiet of her home and the lavender that rose in the steam.
And then the phone.
It rang once.
She cursed and considered not answering.
It rang again.
“Fuck,” she hissed, remembering her reluctantly slumbering and teething bairn only separated by twenty-two stairs and a half-closed door from the jangling phone.
It rang a third time.
She leapt up then, hissing a curse as her knee knocked into the side table and sloshed her tea onto its saucer.
“Murray residence,” she said, her voice still slicing with its curtness despite her low tone.  Her brow furrowed, her fingers curling into the spiral of the cord. She swallowed, knowing the news conveyed to her by the primary school’s headmaster was true even as she asked for clarification. “Maggie brought what to school?”
The answer did not change.
But the world would.
The top 5 most common bugs on magnolia trees and how to get rid of them
Tumblr media
If you're a homeowner, then you know that keeping your lawn and garden in good shape can be a lot of work. Between watering, mowing, and trimming, it can feel like there's never enough time in the day. But don't forget about your trees! Magnolia trees are beautiful but they can also be susceptible to certain bugs and diseases. Here are the top 5 most common bugs on magnolia trees and how to get rid of them.
1. What is canker disease and what are the symptoms?
Canker disease is a plant disease that is caused by various fungi or bacteria. The most common symptom of canker disease is the presence of small, sunken lesions on the leaves, stems, or branches of a plant. These lesions are often surrounded by yellowish or brownish discoloration. Other symptoms include premature leaf drop, dieback of shoots and branches, and cankers on the trunk. Canker diseases can weaken and kill plants over time if left untreated.
There are several ways to prevent canker diseases from occurring in the first place. One way is to choose disease-resistant varieties of plants when possible.
2. How is canker disease treated, and what are the side effects of treatment?
Tumblr media
Canker disease is a plant disease that affects many different types of trees, including magnolia trees. The disease is caused by a number of different fungi, bacteria, and viruses, and can cause significant damage to the tree if left untreated. Treatment for canker disease generally involves using a fungicide or bactericide to kill the offending organism.
However, treatment can also be difficult and sometimes unsuccessful. Additionally, some treatments can have negative side effects, such as damaging the tree's leaves or causing the tree to produce fewer flowers. As such, it is important to consult with a qualified arborist or tree care specialist before attempting to treat canker disease.
3. What causes canker disease, and how can you prevent it from spreading in your garden or orchard?
Canker disease is caused by a variety of fungi, bacteria, and insects. The most common cause of canker disease is the fungus Botryosphaeria dothidea. This fungus infects magnolia trees through wounds in the bark. Once the fungus has entered the tree, it begins to produce spores that spread the infection to other parts of the tree.
Bacteria can also cause canker disease. The most common bacterium that causes canker disease is Pseudomonas syringe PV. syringe. This bacterium infects magnolia trees through wounds in the bark. Once the bacterium has entered the tree, it begins to produce toxins that kill cells and cause cankers to form.
Insects can also cause canker disease. The most common insect that causes canker disease is the magnolia scale (Neolecanium magnoliae). This insect feeds on the sap of magnolia trees. As it feeds, the insect secretes a sticky substance that helps the fungus Botryosphaeria dothidea to infect the tree.
There are several things that you can do to prevent canker disease from spreading in your garden or orchard. First, make sure to prune dead or dying branches from your magnolia trees.
4. Canker disease is a serious infection - if you think you may have it, please consult a medical professional immediately.
If you think you may have canker disease, it is important to consult a medical professional immediately. This serious infection can cause bugs to form on magnolia trees, and can ultimately lead to the death of the tree. Early detection and treatment is crucial in preventing the spread of this disease.
Conclusion paragraph:
If you think you may have canker disease, please consult a medical professional immediately. Canker disease is a serious infection and can cause extensive damage to your trees or plants if left untreated. The good news is that canker disease is treatable, and with early diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis for recovery is excellent. Contact us today for more information about how we can help you diagnose and treat this potentially devastating infection.
When he was 16 he was caught in an extreme sports accident that left him practically paralysed from the neck down and he was undergoing treatment for this up until near to October 2077, when reports of nuclear war emerged. On the 18th of October, he was sent to Vault 198 in preparation before the bombs fell on the 23rd.
While in Vault 198 he underwent an FEV treatment regime and cryostasis which transformed him into a half-Deathclaw, half-human being, which had the added side-effect of repairing the damage that had caused his paralysis to a degree.
He escaped Vault 198 nearly 200 years later and emerged in a devastated world. He travelled to Nevada and worked as a courier for the Mojave Express for some time, until one fateful delivery in 2281 left him shot in the head and left for dead.
He was rescued and taken to Goodsprings and was intending to track down the man who shot him, but still did occasional courier work.
One delivery took him up to the Commonwealth and that’s where he met Matsu. The delivery was done but he didn’t leave yet due to Matsu’s kindness and the fact that the people of the Commonwealth were far less abrasive.
When he did eventually return, it was one final return to pick up what stuff he’d left and to settle the score with Benny. He had intended to return the bullet but a change in Benny’s demeanour meant that he spared the man and left him to fight for an independent New Vegas with Yes Man while he returned to the Commonwealth, taking the people of Goodsprings with him after fending off yet another Powder Ganger attack.
He is now happily living as the life partner of Matsu in Sanctuary with his cats and the new friends he’s made along the way.
Eight Hair Glosses Celebrating The Dog Days of Summer
vimeo
++ THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
A paean to the Hounds of Black Phoenix!
The truth I do not stretch or shove
When I state that the dog is full of love.
I've also found, by actual test,
A wet dog is the lovingest.
Proceeds from the sale of these hair glosses will benefit the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA.
The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is a donor-supported, nonprofit organization that provides animal care and services for homeless and owned animals in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The organization is dedicated to promoting humane treatment and compassionate care for all animals. The animals in its care come from 11 animal control contract cities, as well as partner shelters across the Los Angeles area and beyond. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA also offers lifesaving programs and services to the community that support the human-animal bond and keep pets in homes.
A note from Black Phoenix Trading Post: “We have combined Tahitian monoi, camelina oil, argan oil, and karanja oil to give your mane a gleaming finishing shine without leaving it gloopy, weighted-down, or greasy. Camelina oil provides a protective coating for the hair follicles, argan oil nourishes stressed hair, enhances elasticity, and repairs cellular damage to the hair strand itself, and a touch of Monoi oil adds moisture and enhances softness.Your hair will be silkier, shinier, glossier, more vibrant, and frizz-free.”
Please note: these are hair glosses for human hair. Not dog fur. Or cat fur. Or hamster fur. Not lizard scales, not tarantula carapaces, not turtle shells; neither is it for feathers, whiskers, or paw pads. This is a human hair gloss for human heads that is inspired by doggos but is NOT to be used ON doggos.
Tumblr media
ELLA
Not a dog, not a hound, but a 100% genuine cur: Brian’s crazy swamp girl, the Blueberry Catahoula Hog Dog! Louisiana’s olive blossom and magnolia swirled with blueberries.
Tumblr media
GRANITE
Brian’s sweet Granite passed at Halloween in 2014, and our hearts broke. This scent is a captured memory: the day that a bottle of body lotion accidentally fell on him. It’s a rich patchouli carnation mingled with warm fur and a hint of corn chip-paws.
Tumblr media
LOLA
Jacquelynn’s beautiful baby!
She has a unique independence that I attribute to her being an Aquarius.
She hates closed doors and crates. She likes the option to join the party or not.
She is intelligent, loyal and protective.
Super affectionate with people she knows, but aloof with strangers.
A wintry-white flurry of snow, as pale as her eyes, with lacquered black pepper and oudh.
Tumblr media
PA-POW
Pa-Pow the Wonderdog: the great love of Teddy’s life, his little soulmate. We lost her in 2008, but her spirit will be with Teddy forever.
Three golden ambers with a hint of jellybean.
Tumblr media
PICKLE
Lilith’s bright, bouncy, goofy Leo! A gleaming vanilla cream poof of coconut with a hint of tiare.
Tumblr media
PUGSLEY
We lost our darling Pugsley many years ago, but Lilith swears that she can hear his ghost barking at the mailman to this day. Dedicated defender of the household, bane to all small birds. We miss you, Pugsley. Black tea, tonka bean, and licorice root with sweet black musk.
Tumblr media
WEDNESDAY
My cantankerous old lady, a dog of many names: Lumpy, No-Fun Dog, Grandma, Day-Day, and Cranks. She always looked like a s’more to me, so her scent is scorched marshmallows and melted chocolate with cinnamon sugar-dusted graham cracker bits.
Tumblr media
ZOË
Ella’s best friend and Pickle’s nemesis! A voracious lover of food and all things foodlike: warm milk chocolate and Canadian maple syrup with amber and caramel.
a demon’s plight - part three
A multichapter series regarding Minerva’s healing/redemption Post-Tartaros.
A/N: Sorry for the wait! Hopefully we can kick more of this off
Word Count: ~2.8k
[Ao3 Link/FFNet Link]
Part One, Part Two
Enjoy!
"In the not so distant future… a battle of epic proportions will begin." The figure said, "I simply received an order from my Master to gather troops, so here I am."
Minerva found herself sneering in an attempt to seem unfazed, though she found her voice betraying her as she spoke. Her expression also could not fully stay level, showing an ounce of fear behind that hard glare. "Because killing troops is oh so helpful in recruiting them to fight on your side… You must be the most idiotic of your kind."
"Those who cannot withstand my magic are of no use to us. We only desire the strongest…" The figure walked closer, and a devious look crossed their features, "Show me… Are you worthy?"
"Don't come any closer!" Minerva forced out at the top of her lungs. She tried to move, but her body was frozen and she could not take a single step to protect herself, "Stop this! NO!"
Porlyusica thought nothing of it at first. She had experienced quite a few patients that suffered from nightmares while in her care. She had even seen a few sleep-talkers. While she had seen it numerous times before, Porlyusica still felt an ounce of sympathy for those who suffered those nightmares, and in Minerva's case, it seemed to be a very severe case. Porlyusica, for once, didn't react cruelly to seeing Minerva's discomfort; she actually frowned and let out a soft sigh. However, upon closer inspection, Porlyusica noticed something far more extreme than a mere bad nightmare in Minerva's case.
Minerva had begun to growl in her sleep, expression contorted into one of pain. She had started to toss and turn, moving as if she was trying to avoid something. The strangest part of Minerva's nightmares was how she had wrapped her arms around herself, and how she was starting to dig her scaly fingertips into her skin. Porlyusica could see how tightly and how harshly Minerva was holding herself, so much that the skin on her arms were becoming raw and reddened. The sharpened claws of her fingertips under her demon form even began to draw blood out of Minerva's skin. Porlyusica thought to wake Minerva, to save her from whatever nightmare she was surely trapped in, but something caused Porlyusica to freeze up on the spot out of utter confusion.
Prior to the beginning of Minerva's treatment, her darkened, scaly skin had run from her fingertips past her elbow, falling just barely short of her shoulder. However, under Porlyusica's treatment, the scales had receded to below Minerva's elbow and had started to lighten. Both of Minerva's eyes were also unobstructed under Porlyusica's treatment. Yet… During Minerva's nightmare, those scales started to reform, slowly but surely darkening Minerva's skin and crawling up her arms. The marks darted across Minerva's face to seal off her right eye again as well, and Porlyusica could only watch in awe.
Before Porlyusica could stand paralyzed for long, Minerva jerked awake, sitting up with a desperate gasp for air. Her breathing was jagged and deep, and her forehead was slick with sweat. Minerva seemed to realize how she was safe however, and she tried to steady her breathing as she ran her hand through her hair. It was then that she noticed how she could only see out of one eye, and she placed her hand over the sealed eye and bared her teeth.
"You said this treatment would work!" Minerva growled, directing her anger at Porlyusica.
Porlyusica narrowed her eyes, "It did work. For some reason, the effects were reversed."
"What is the meaning of this?!" Throwing the blanket gathered by her waist off to the side, Minerva shot up to her feet, staring Porlyusica down.
"I don't know." Porlyusica said in a strong voice, accenting every syllable. She wasn't going to back down, even if Minerva was up against her.
Curling her fingers inwards, Minerva caused a swarm of Territory Magic to gather at her hands, growing up to her forearms. Slowly she stalked forward, that Territory Magic gushing around her, her face contorting into a snarl, gaining on Porlyusica and causing her to shrink away with every step.
Porlyusica, while she was stepping back with Minerva's every advance forward, still did not waver in the face of Minerva, "Don't come any closer!"
Suddenly Minerva froze because of that, eyes shooting wide and the magic around her arms dissipating instantly. The words triggered something in her mind and brought her back to her senses, and she gradually began to step away from Porlyusica as she clutched her head in her hands, "No… I'm sorry… I'm sorry…" Minerva muttered, shaking her head and gritting her teeth; suddenly her head was pounding.
"This is worse than I thought…" Porlyusica said beneath her breath, concern in her voice.
Even though that pain was in her head and she was volatile mere seconds before, the markings on Minerva's body started to fade slightly, and she was at least able to see out both of her eyes with that in mind. She let out a heavy sigh, trying to pull herself together, "I'm… going for a walk." She said tersely, spinning around on her heel, "I'll be back… and then we can try the treatment again."
Minerva didn't even wait for Porlyusica's response; she merely left before Porlyusica could utter a word.
The walk was mildly therapeutic, though the pounding sensation that was still present in her head made it difficult for her to calm down. She kept a hand pressed against her forehead, eyes closed and tightly shut to try and alleviate the pain even slightly. Sighing, Minerva did her best to push on despite the excruciating headache, and she tried to keep her mind level since that made it hurt less.
Some time later, during Minerva's walk down the path, she could sense a powerful presence coming closer to her, and in focusing her mind on the magic it alleviated the pain in her head quite some bit. Minerva slowed her pace, continuing forward slowly with one hand behind her back that was coated in Territory Magic should she need to protect herself. She had never been near Fairy Tail and Magnolia in person before, and she certainly had never been in the strange woods near the build that housed Porlyusica before, so she had no idea what she would encounter in these woods. It was better being safe than sorry.
The closer the presence got, Minerva started to look to the direction of the source to try and spot it first, and she was met with the strangest sight when she did so: bright red hair. Minerva narrowed her eyes in confusion, willing away the magic around her hands as she relaxed, "Erza…?"
Now that made no sense. Erza never exuded such a powerful magic presence outside of a fight, so why was the signal coming off of her so strong? Shaking her head, Minerva pushed that aside and instead followed the path to Erza, being sure to make her footsteps loud enough that Erza would hear her coming.
Erza looked towards the source of the crushing leaves, and she blinked a few times upon seeing Minerva, "Minerva…! I didn't expect to see you out here in the middle of the woods…"
Minerva only shrugged, placing a hand on her hip, "I needed some fresh air. It was just pure coincidence that I happened upon you out here." That was a bit of a lie seeing as Minerva tracked her down, but Erza didn't have to know that.
"Ah… Have you been getting any better at all since I've last been here?" Erza asked, trying to smile though having it falter and fall early on, which caught Minerva's eye.
"Hmm. You could say that." Minerva again lied through her teeth, keeping a watchful eye on Erza instead. She was far more interested in trying to figure out what had Erza acting so strangely…
Nodding and glancing away almost immediately, Erza instead tried to start walking away, "Well… I was just on my way to go and visit you down at Porlyusica's… Shall we return?"
Before Erza could finish that thought, Minerva loosely grabbed Erza's wrist to keep her from moving any further. It was a show of restraint for someone like her with how gentle the grab itself was, but it still contained its bite from the commanding nature of the action itself. "I don't think so."
Erza furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, glancing down at her wrist in Minerva's hand before looking back up at Minerva herself, "W...Why?"
"Something's bothering you, I can just tell." Minerva explained, "It is of my understanding that it's typical of good people to talk through their issues, so… Let's talk."
Erza seemed to become even more confused by that, but she shook her head to rid herself of that shocked expression and she instead schooled her features, "...Fine. Though let me advise you on one additional thing: it is not very typical of good people to grab people by the wrist to force them to stay and talk to you." Erza raised her wrist and twisted it a few times, drawing attention to it.
Minerva let go of Erza the second she requested it, clearing her throat and drawing in a sharp breath, "Right, sorry. My mistake. I suppose we do not have to hold this chat if you truly do not want to. I won't force you."
"Better." Erza smiled faintly, "I… should be fine. I'm just… shocked, is all."
Raising an eyebrow, Minerva then lifted a hand briefly to put a momentary halt to the conversation, "Perhaps we should sit down, then." There was a tree large stump only a few steps away, so Minerva walked over and sat down on it, crossing her legs and waiting for Erza to do the same.
Erza nodded and joined Minerva then, letting out a deep sigh to prepare herself. Her gaze remained plastered on the ground, and she adjoined her hands as she talked, "I got some… surprising news from the Master today. Something I never thought I'd ever hear from him, especially now of all times…"
Minerva leaned in, filled with anticipation. Erza was certainly masterfully dodging addressing it outright, "Which was…?"
"He disbanded Fairy Tail." Erza choked out tersely, mouth dry, "Fairy Tail is gone."
"What?" Minerva furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head, "That makes absolutely no sense even in the slightest! With everything that happened with Tartaros, isn't this the time where it is the most dire for Fairy Tail to stay together?"
"I thought the same…" Erza sighed, "I suppose not."
Minerva rolled her eyes, "How ridiculous, not to mention utterly unforgivable-"
"Minerva." Erza turned her head to look at her, voice stern, "You're trying too hard."
Inhaling a deep breath, Minerva eventually nodded. Her words were starting to feel hollow and empty the more she spoke, anyways. "Right… Well, I suppose that being kicked out of your home you've known for so long is nothing easy to swallow, and as such… I do feel sympathy for you in regards to your situation."
"That's something, I suppose… Thank you." Erza lowered her head, obstructing Minerva's view of her yet again.
"Mm." Minerva simply hummed in response, eyes flitting off to the side as a heavy silence fell over them both. She didn't quite know what to say, but she supposed that she would try and change the subject, "...You know, perhaps I wasn't as honest with you as I should've been-" Minerva was cut off from her train of thought by a poignant sniffle coming from Erza, and Minerva froze instantly. Slowly she looked over at Erza, and her worst fear came true; Erza really was tearing up. Minerva could only grimace as a response.
Eventually, however, Minerva loosened up and placed her hand on Erza's back, trying to be comforting but not knowing at all what to do. She ended up not saying anything, not wanting to misspeak yet again especially in a time like this.
Erza rubbed at her eyes with a hand, shaking her head and trying to compose herself but to no avail, "How could this be over so soon…? We were supposed to band together even during the hardest of times because we were family, but how could I believe any of that anymore if we disbanded as soon as things went south…?"
Minerva let out a long breath. She had to have been the most clueless person on these sorts of situations, yet she was the one that Erza had in this moment. She had to figure out something to say, no matter how hard it was for her to try and think this sentimentally before. "Well… Perhaps it's not as black and white as you would like. Not everything's perfect, no matter how much you may want it to be."
With a heavy sigh, Erza eventually sat up straight and sniffled again, pulling herself together even if it was a slow process, "Yeah… It seems so."
"Look, Erza…" Minerva shook her head and glanced away, "I'm sorry. I wish I could be of more help to you like this… You know how unable I am to form emotional connections."
"I know. You're trying though, and that's progress." Erza smiled faintly, "But I think you're getting close to one."
Minerva raised an eyebrow, "Am I?"
Erza nodded, "Yeah. With me."
Rolling her eyes, Minerva glanced away and shook her head, though she couldn't stop herself from smiling no matter how hard she tried. It was as if it was a power outside of her control taking over her to show such emotion. "Keep telling yourself that, Titania."
"Fight it all you want, but I still think it's true." Erza leaned forward in that moment, wrapping her arms around Minerva in a hug, "I feel slightly better after that, after we talked. I know you don't believe you were of much help, but just having you try is momentous enough. I can't ignore that, and I appreciate it greatly, so… Thank you, Minerva."
Minerva inhaled sharply at the sudden contact, and she looked down at Erza with a confused look. Being hugged was a new experience for her, and she never expected anything from Erza, no less. It was safe to say she was fairly surprised, and she only got to placing her hand on Erza's back haphazardly before Erza pulled away. "...Right. You're welcome, I guess…" Minerva figured that was the right thing to say in the situation, and she flashed a momentary smile.
Erza wiped her eyes one last time and let out a breath, standing up and brushing herself off, "Heh, well… Now that our talk's done, should we head back to Porlyusica?"
Nodding, Minerva stood up as well and ran a hand through her hair to pull herself together, "That works for me."
Suddenly Erza narrowed her eyes at Minerva and took a step closer, "Hey, the markings…" Erza's hand ghosted near Minerva's arm, almost as if she were hesitant to touch it. When Minerva moved her arm closer, Erza took it as permission to take ahold of Minerva's wrist and lift her arm up so Erza could study it better, and Erza trailed the fingertips of her free hand down Minerva's forearm which had lightened considerably and lost some of its scales, "They receded."
Minerva and Erza's eyes met, both filled with surprise and confusion, and suddenly Minerva realized something; her headache from before was completely gone too, "You're right… But I'm not undergoing the treatment at all.."
Erza flashed a determined expression before letting go of Minerva's arm, "We need to talk with Porlyusica. Maybe something else is going on."
Minerva nodded, arm falling back to her side, "Right. Let's go."
As Minerva made her way back to Porlyusica's alongside Erza, she replayed everything that had happened in her mind, looking everything over. At first, her day started off with her markings returning to how severe they were when Minerva was part of Tartaros, and now… They were almost gone. It was so strange how fickle the markings were when it came to appearing and fading, and Minerva didn't understand how or why they worked how they did. Perhaps Porlyusica could shed some light on this situation, but something else was bothering Minerva regarding the whole situation, specifically what might have brought about some change.
How did Erza play into all of this?
Carpenter ants are not larger than a quarter of an inch in overall length, they are small and black, and might have wings. Carpenter ants can definitely damage wood supports on structures, such as two by fours and four by fours.
