Carcass Island, West Falkland Islands. Dec. 20, 2024; Part 2.

Nancy gets the last seat in the zodiac and leaves me on the ship.

The island was named after the British ship, HMS Carcass, that did the first survey here in 1766. The island has been owned by R.P. Magill for over a century. Three historic building are still on site. No rats or cats on the island allow many species of birds a great place to nest.

I catch the next zodiac, driven by guide Florincia “Flor” from Buenos Aires. This will be our first “wet landing.” There is no dock or pier to get on. So we scoot to the front of the zodiac after the driver noses it on the rock pebble beach. Swing your legs over the side and step in the water. Luckily it was never deeper than our shin high boots.

Short walk along the shore. Several penguins have hollows in the peat they duck into.

Thick brambles.

Several species of plants came from New Zealand. The Night Herons love them for nest.

We did see our first seal off in the distance along the shore.

Some sort of hawk.

The family of care takers make pastries and tea for the passengers. They had one school age boy on the island for the Holidays. Nancy could not get much information out of him considering school and travel.

This is an old building that has collapsed. Might have been a house or a barn. Note the cast steel “Try pot” used for boiling down seal blubber. Sealers were working in the Falklands well before the whalers. I assume the islanders boiled their clothes in this in later years.

This was about the least interesting shore excursion we did.

Puis avec John et Donovan, nous nous sommes mis à improviser le texte, et tout est venu très vite. C’est finalement devenu Rocky Raccoon, car cela faisait plus cow-boy. »

Margo Bird a entendu dire que le docteur avait été inspiré par un véritable médecin qui avait soigné Paul en 1966 après une chute de mobylette.
