Making my first 2017 cleansing bath. Yipee! I like to make my own version of cascarilla which is basically grounded up egg shells. It is often seen as a white powder compacted into a type of chalk. Yet I just make my own version by saving organic egg shells used while cooking. Let them dry out. Then break the shells by hand into small pieces and save in a jar. When I am ready to use, I then (as shown in the video) grind up the egg shells into a powder. Normally I just throw the powder into my bath. The egg shells absorb negativity, purify and clarify. Magic Every Day

Ritual has been a part of my life from a very early age. I grew up Catholic, went to parochial school and Mass every week. I loved church, the smells, the ritual, the connection to something bigger than myself.

As an adult, I'm not a part of any organized religion, but I'm very spiritual. The closest word to describe what I practice is "witch" but when I've attended actual Wiccan events, I couldn't connect with the community and hierarchy.

But Magic is something I practice everyday. Beginning with my morning meditation (I'm a "bad" meditator so really my morning check in and a gratitude list), the altars in my home,  my walks in Prospect Park after work, my tarot practice, following of the phases of the moon and the positions of the planets, the BlessingBombs Spell candles I make for myself and clients, the full and new moon circles I attend and the retreats I've participated in over the past few years in the Catskills.

Practicing magic has helped me connect with myself, my desires, my dreams and with other people. It has helped me release myself from resentments, fears and self doubt. It has brought me joy and shown me beauty, even when I'm struggling.

As a child I called it God, Church and prayer. Today I call it god/goddess/higher power, circle and ritual. But the love comfort and feelings are the same.

Magic Everyday

Do I believe in magic? Absolutely.  I may not have answered so enthusiastically as a younger person.  My perception was less evolved, my intuitions not yet trusted.  I may have silently judged people who believed in the power of crystals, lit candles to send intentions to the universe, or asked questions of their guides.  At that time, I was mired in my own struggle and in my investment to stay struggling. My judgment and intuition were clouded by what I considered reality.  I was a staunch atheist and took care of myself.  I didn’t need other people or outside mystical forces to live my life. I also didn’t see all the beautiful magic around me everyday.  

That young woman part of me is smirking her black lipsticked lips and squinting her Siouxsie Sioux eyelinered eyes a little as I am writing that I have been on a spiritual journey over the past few years.  It started with recognizing the magic that lives within our bodies.  We can dance, move, exercise, breathe.  Humans are fucking fascinating beings.  Once I connected to my brain and body, I was able to let in some of the magic.  I let in an energy healer, a breathworker, and daily meditation.  My work is about moving physical, emotional, and spiritual energy through breathing.  

On this spiritual journey (she’s still smirking but kind of listening now), I have learned to see the magic in rituals, in taking time to slow down, check in with myself, ask for what I want, and to receive.  The slowing down alone has benefitted me so much.  My intuition is heightened and I am more able to trust that intuition.  I look at the world from different perspectives and see the little bits of magic that happen everyday: flowers blooming, sun setting, animals running and flying.  That younger me, she didn’t see that.  

As I have gone, as I like to call it Full Woo, I am able to let go of that judging young woman part of myself.  I wish her well.  I embrace my new connection to spirituality and make sure to see the magic around me everyday and to create magic in the world.

Gotta get going, the new moon is tonight and my intention setting ritual awaits me.  I’ll light a special candle for my younger self.  She was magical in her own way.
