MAGIC Revue Pop Moderne:
Ici, j’ai acceptĂ© de me faire confiance.
Tumblr media

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

*  Roleplay history
The rules are simple! Post ten characters you’d like to roleplay as, have role-played as, and might bring back. Then tag ten people to do the same (if you can’t think of ten characters, just write down however many you can and tag the same amount of people). Aside from that, please repost instead of reblogging!
— CURRENTLY PLAYING.
@wcnderfulrush | Kotori Minami / Love Live! - School Idol Project | Active
@youngbxker | Lillian Elise Marchand | Multiverse OC | Low Activity
@shymaidxn | Diantha / Granblue Fantasy (GBF) | Active
— WANT TO PLAY.
GBF best friend OCs | Awhile ago a lot of people where making Captain OCs and a few of those types of blogs popped up. I plan on giving Kotori a GBF verse, but I also wanted a multitude of GBF OCs. Maybe as a small crew in of itself, or a small group that joins the Grandcypher; I haven’t decided which yet, nor exactly how many OCs I want to make in this group (there’s at least 3-4 ideas in my head sooo).
Revue Starlight - Relive multimuse | I started playing this game when it first came out (and accidentally put money into it while I was too tired to function, which means I’m keeping it forever now) and I got real interested in some of the characters. Most notably Tamao, Aruru, Hikari, Nana, and recently Junna and Maya have become a bit more interesting to me. I haven’t watched the anime, so I want to watch that first before I make a huge decision / take on so many characters.
Idolmaster multimuse | This is an idea I’ve grappled with for awhile. After I watched the CG anime I loved Uzuki and Kirari, after starting deresute I loved Yuka, Kanna, and Kumiko, after watching SideM and starting msute I loved Shiki, Hayato, Touma, and Saki! If I really got into All Stars / Million Live again, I’d probably be in huge trouble with having too many people;; This right now feels like a lot of muses, but I love them all a lot and would maybe want to try it out?
FGO multimuse | I’ve been lacking in my play towards this game, but I still love some of the characters here! Nero, Da Vinci, Beni-enma, Chiron, Nursery Rhyme, Xuanzang Sanzang, Frankenstein, Nitocris, and the recently added Ganesha are the favs so far, though the blog would probably only start off with Nero, Nursery Rhyme, Fran, and Da Vinci; I need a better understanding of some of them, but some of them won’t come to EN for a bit...
Yuki Yuna / Yuki Yuna is a Hero | A character that I love from my fav magical girl anime! Simple as that lol
Maybe some of the girls from Magia Record when the EN version comes out (though i need to check when that is)
Enstars and A3 are getting animes, so oh dear you never know, I might love them...
A plethora of OCs I might want to make in the future for any reason / any fandom.
— HAVE PLAYED.
Aisling Dempsey | Ghost OC | hiatus ( but maybe collab Lillian book..........one day )
Kathleen O’Conner | Modern OC | erased from existence because she felt real mary sue and her blog gave me anxiety for some reason because of that?
Aya Maryama and Misaki Okusawa | Bang Dream - Girls Band Party | indefinite hiatus ( gonna make their blog one of those multimuses I mentioned; gonna get started on it after Tuesday because that’s when my stats class ends~).
Hanamaru Kunikida | Love Live! Sunshine!! | hiatus because...Aqours rp kind of makes me uncomfy after long-going incidents with a person I used to call my best friend. The rp stuff was on twitter rp and wasn’t directly pointed at me, but I played a small part in it because at first I thought it was just angst threads, but then it turned into...Some real bad jazz, to put it mildly. I love Hanamaru to bits, but I deleted my twitter rp accounts because being reminded of that stuff still gives me anxiety, and even dabbled with deleting her on here but I can’t really bring myself to since nothing happened with this Hanamaru, you know? As such, her blog has just kind of...Rotted in a corner, whoops. I still have all of her icons, so maybe I’ll go back to that blog one day...
Shizuku Osaka | Love Live! - Perfect Dream Project | hiatus because...I keep forgetting she exists gdjcgfhgjv. Took over Kathleen’s whole blog; I did it up and everything, and then I did no threads. Whenever SIFAS or a PDP anime comes out, I may be convinced to go on her blog and actively seek out threads there.
Abel | Lion OC | never had a blog, but literally my first muse on this place ( I rped through anon with this Edward Elric blog I found and popped in with both Abel and Lillian-prototype; that mun and I are friends on twitter and tumbr personals and occasionally strike up conversations still~). A fond memory, but also a tad cringe, but also the mun encouraged my writing and said it was really good, and that helped make the mun I am today~ *fireworks*. I thought about making him kinda like a shapeshifter with a zookeeper job, but as of this post nothing has happened outside of a few ideas.
STOLEN FROM. technically @sappines but this has been sitting in my drafts for so long;; TAGGING. Hey you? You like memes? Then go take this one!

My mother likes Yuzuki Reon very much, so she's been very curious to see what she's been doing as an OG. Now that Reon Jack 2 got an actual DVD release, we were able to have a look into Reon's post-zuka career. After watching it together, I thought I'd write shortly about the show.
First let me get the negatives out of the way, so we can better concentrate on the good stuff.
It's not a musical, or even a revue, it's a concert. There are some dances, but most of it is singing. Now this depends on your music taste, but in my opinion, most of the songs are kinda mediocre and have forgettable melodies. Reon's voice is still amazing (and surprisingly close to her otokoyaku voice), so the songs are very pleasant to listen, even if they aren't musical masterpieces.
Some of the songs are...   sorry, I'm really bad at recognizing music styles...   kinda disco-ish pop songs. They have a fast beat and are very flashy, noisy, restless pieces of music. And the stage show and editing follows this style. There are a lot of bright, flashing disco lights, and my mother finds those irritating (it makes the stage messy to look and the dance moves hard to follow). I on the other hand was much more annoyed with the editing, which was like that of a music video; each shot lasts less than five seconds and the editing is messy and restless, making it, again, impossible to follow the dance choreography properly. The swiftly changing angles fit the fast-paced music, I get it, but I still prefer a bit calmer editing. Also, it's a bit weird to see the camera occasionally focus on the musicians. I know they are an important part of the show, but my mother bought this DVD to see Reon dance, not to look at some random guitarist (though she did like the violinist).
Last complaint: The male dancers. I feel bad for dissing them, because they are really good dancers, definitely true dance artists all of them. But they lack something that I got used to when watching Takarazuka – they don't act while dancing (or if they do, they do it poorly). For example, there's this one pair dance, that's very clearly supposed to be seductive in nature. For a dance like this to work, it's crucial that the dancers have great chemistry between them. For Reon, this is not a problem. She never performs dances purely mechanically, she always puts on a stage persona of some sort. During this dance, when she looks at her partner, the camera or the audience, her every movement and every look sells the idea of temptation and desire, just like the song itself is hinting at. But when her partner looks at her, I see no spark in his eyes, no emotions, not even a smallest hint of flirting. He's just doing the dance like a robot, move by move, and not putting on a stage persona (or if he is, he's not selling it good enough for me to notice.). I can't help but feel that if Reon had danced this number with any OG or current takarasienne, musumeyaku or otokoyaku, it would have been a much, much better performance. Because I could swear that TMS teaches whole lessons about how to look at your partner with adoring eyes, that's how good they are at acting while dancing.
Long story short, the dudes' stage presences aren't convincing me and I find them missing charisma.
Now, on to the good stuff.
Reon hasn't lost any of her charisma. When she enters the stage, she owns it. Her singing, dancing and acting are top quality as usual.
Some of the songs are rather catchy. I liked Witch's Mirror, and thought it had a pretty cool choreography, where the dancers mirror Reon's dance moves as her ”reflections.” I've seen this gimmick used in Takarazuka earlier, but even if it's an old trick, it still works. Pretty dance and a nice song (again, depending on your taste, I personally found this one to have a memorable tune.) Also, unlike the men in the pairdances, these background dancers actually had some acting going on, their performance had style and charisma. There was something wild about them, like they really wanted us to think about them as magical creatures/spirits that Reon conjured out of her Witch's Mirror. I liked them, though of course, they can't really compete with zuka actresses.
Tumblr media
The restless editing is thank goodness left just for the more disco-style songs. In the middle part of the show, the dancing gets intense. The editing staff understood that for dances with complex choreography, they need to calm the cuts down and show us shots from angles where we can see all of Reon's body moving (and not just get closeups of her face and random musicians). The dances are long and very ambitious, as Reon keeps pushing the limit of her skills higher and higher, and all the rest of the dancers have clearly been chosen for this show particularly for their dancing skills. Even if I critizise their acting skills, I can't help but be amazed at their dancing. All of them are great dancers, easily able to keep up with Reon's skills.
When I started watching Takarazuka, the primary pull for me above all else was the dancing. I love dancing, both dancing myself and watching others dance. It's a great passion of mine, and so, it's naturally what I love most in zuka. I eagerly wait for the minirevues so I can be hypnotized by the actresses; when they begin to dance, I can't look away. And Reon was an exceptionally talented dancer. I am so very happy that she has decided to keep doing it even after leaving Takarazuka, because if such talent was lost, it would be a tragedy.
Basicly what I'm saying is, the dance numbers in this DVD are the highlights of the show and made purchasing it worthwhile.
I've already talked about the male dancers, so let's talk about the female one. Reon dances a pairdance with this incredible woman, who I imagine must be a professional ballerina (her dance moves look very ballet-like). She is amazing (though again, a bit lacking in the acting skills, but hey, she's a dance artist, not an actress). As someone who only watches zuka and not other theater forms, it was weird to see a woman without the usual zuka makeup, looking really natural.
Tumblr media
After the pairdance, she gets to do a solo number, which was great, because we get to see more of her dancing and because we get an actual dance number while Reon is off-stage changing clothes (most of the time when Reon is off-stage the camera just zooms in on the musicians jamming. And I still think they are boring to look at. If I want to see people play their instruments, I'll go to a rock concert. I'm here for Reon and the dance numbers.).
One of the dance numbers involves Reon dancing with two guys, with a sort of jealousy theme, I think. As the men get more aggressive, even close to dance-fighting (I was a bit disappointed they didn't go that far, I love dance-duels), Reon gets worried (”Oh dear, I led them both on and now they are angry. Will they kill each other? Or me?”). The guys unfortunately don't act nearly as well, but Reon's face is full of emotion during this number. It ends with both men just...  pushing Reon around and lifting her. At one point one of them throws Reon to the ground so that she slides across floor to the arms of the other guy (”I don't want this anymore. You can have it! Here, catch!”).
youtube
At this point, I should talk about lifts. Most of my current dancing is reneissanse dances (they are mostly easy and don't require too much touching, good for an introvert that way). One of the easiest dances is called Branle Officiale, in which there is a part where the ladies will jump and the gentlemen are supposed to put their hands on the sides of the lady's ribcage and guide her to their left while she jumps. Most of the time I dance as a man, because there are more females among the dancers. But once or twice I was dancing as a lady and came across some tall guys who needed to show off how big and strong they are and instead of just guiding my jump, they would actually hold me and lift me off the ground and then place me gently on their left. That moment, when I felt that it wasn't my jump that made me airborne, but the guy's arms lifting me, it was magical. I don't know how to describe it, that feeling of weightlessness. Butterflies in the stomach I guess is what some use as a metaphor. I think it reminded me of that giddy feeling a child feels on a rollercoaster or some other theme park ride.
I am always excited when I see lifts in Takarazuka, because I feel that sensation again by just thinking about how it must feel like to be up there. But even so, I must admit that the lifts in zuka are, with few exceptions, all the same. Why not more variety? I know the common reasoning behind it would be, that it's very difficult to lift someone who weights about as much as you do, and so the lifts are left at the styles they feel are safe and managable. I'm no expert, but I do think with proper techniques they could safely perform more varied lifts. Maybe not the ”lift you up above my head like a trophy” thing, but they could certainly do the ”make you sit on my shoulder”-lift.
Last, I'd like to talk about the bonus number. At the end of the DVD there's an extra dance, with another female dancer, and whoa, this one is something completely different. She's a modern dancer, and I can't name her exact dance style, but it's amazing to watch. I usually don't like modern dancing, because a lot of it is lazily made, ugly and/or pretentous artsy junk. This is not artsy, not pretending to be deeper than it is and by no means lazy. The dancing is fierce and energetic, sometimes I have to wonder if they fastforwarded the film or if the movements really were that fast. I've never seen anything quite like this dance, so it's hard to describe. Reon joins the dancer and doesn't lose to her in style or swiftness. It's a really cool ending to the DVD.

POST-SCRIPTUM 790

Qu’écoutais-tu alors ?

Vincent : A notre grande surprise, oui !

Do You Hear That Playin'?
There are too many people doing comedy on stage who aren't funny. As they say in one of my favorite movies, Funny Bones, "Some people do funny, but some people have funny bones." Those who aren't funny only understand humor intellectually; it's not in their bones. They imitate funny. As I've written about before, those un-funny sorts don't understand that all good humor does two things: it surprises us and it tells us the truth. Great humor does more than tell the truth; it reveals the truth. And the Second Law of Comedy is: nothing is less funny than the effort to be funny. If we can see you working hard at making us laugh, if you're begging us to laugh, that kills the laugh. Over the first four performances of New Line's Anything Goes, people have come up to Dowdy and me both, saying almost exactly the same words: "I've always loved Anything Goes, but I don't remember it being so funny!" WTF? First of all, you've always loved a musical comedy that wasn't very funny...? Second, I know the songs are great, but Anything Goes would not be a very good show if it weren't funny. Third, what are these other productions doing to diminish -- ignore? -- the rowdy, wacky, subversive comedy the pervades 80% of the show? The only serious moments in the whole show are "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "All Through the Night." One guy who saw our show commented on Facebook that ours was "first time I've seen Anything Goes where the book and lyrics were really concentrated on!" I'll say it again. WTF? This show isn't a revue or a paper-thin jukebox musical. It's a smart, razor-sharp satire. This plot is a masterpiece of romantic farce, as I've mentioned before, using the S.S. American as Shakespeare's Woods, where our characters escape from the rules of The City, where they can de-couple from the wrong partners and re-couple with the right ones. The characters are well-drawn and full of surprises, and the social satire is pointed and insightful. Americans still turn religion into show business, and we still turn criminals into celebrities. Nothing much has changed. But why would anyone do a brilliant satirical comedy if they're going to ignore the brilliant satire? Why share the adult genius of Cole Porter's dense, hilarious lyrics -- or the rich, complex emotion of "I Get a Kick Out of You" -- if you're not going to take the time to understand them and communicate that understanding to the audience?
So many people expected us to impose something on Anything Goes, to change it, but that's not what we do. We take excellent, though often under-appreciated (and/or misunderstood) material and we treat it like it's Shakespeare, Albee, or August Wilson. We take the characters and story seriously, we research period, we research all the unfamiliar language, we get to know the artistic and pop cultural contexts of the story, we explore backstories, relationships, motivations, textual themes, all that stuff. In other words, we take the work seriously. If a comedy is really great, treating it this way will make it much funnier than trying to think of funny gags of your own to insert into the script, the way too many directors do. So many directors and actors think you don't have to take comedy seriously. But you do. Even the most outrageous musicals, like Little Shop, Bat Boy, Urinetown, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Yeast Nation, Jerry Springer the Opera, are funnier if you take them seriously. But you also have to get out of the way -- you can't make a great comedy funny, as too many directors and actors seem to believe; you have to let it be funny. I'm starting to believe that our production of Anything Goes may serve as an accidental master class in doing classic musical comedy. You don't condescend to it, you don't wink at us over its perceived flaws, you don't impose a phony meta-style on it, you don't "excuse" it and yourself by letting us know you know it's dumb. No, you respect it, you follow where it leads, and it you let it work its magic. One of my primary agendas as director was to follow George S. Kaufman's rule of comedy, to never allow silence, unless you use it; and even then, only sparingly. We have wrung nearly every pause out of this dialogue, and I think that at this breakneck pace, the satire is more pointed, the corny jokes more about character, the lyrics more playful, and the chaos so relentless, so deliciously overwhelming. But it shouldn't be a surprise to find out Anything Goes is funny. It shouldn't be radical to treat a classic musical comedy with respect. It shouldn't be shocking for a piece of musical theatre to focus on character and story. Look at the critical reaction so far... "Funnier, sharper and smarter than you may remember. . . a spectacular treat for lovers of modern musical theater. . . .not to be missed. . . non-stop entertainment." -- Judith Newmark, St. Louis Post-Dispatch "Sharper, tarter and more satisfying than you'd think possible." -- Paul Friswold, Riverfront Times "A triumph!" -- Steve Callahan, KDHX "The entire cast of Anything Goes is simply marvelous. . . Everything about the show is extraordinary. . . New Line has yet another hit on their hands." -- Kevin Brackett, ReviewSTL "Kicky and kooky. . . .a buoyant blast from the past that revitalizes one of the great, grand old musicals with charm, humor and style." - Lynn Venhaus, St. Louis Limelight "It's bound to leave you with a smile on your face." -- Andrea Torrence, St. Louis Theatre Snob "As usual, New Line gets it right. . . this is Anything Goes as it’s meant to be performed and witnessed." -- Jeff Ritter, Critical Blast "Silly comedy, stylish music and effervescent performances in a winning combination." -- Mark Bretz, Ladue News "Energetic, smart, and very very funny. . . a sharp, witty, tuneful, and well-cast production that’s a delight from start to finish." -- Michelle Kenyon, Snoop's Theatre Thoughts "It surely is a great deal of fun, especially if you have the least bit of romantic in you." -- Ann Pollock, St. Louis Eats and Drinks
As I have been before from time to time, I am surprised and amused that treating a great piece of theatre like a great piece of theatre is cause for celebration. Shouldn't that be a bare minimum job requirement for all of us...? Though I can't complain, can I? Apparently, all those mediocre productions of Anything Goes in the past are just making us look brilliant. And we're selling out! Before we opened, I wouldn't have said this, but if you haven't seen our show yet, you probably haven't seen Anything Goes as it was meant to be. So get your tickets now. We run through March 24. According to our audiences and the critics, this is an Anything Goes like you've never seen before... The adventure continues. Long Live the Musical!
