Ever since the 2000s, there has been a glut of books aimed at young girls involving magic. The Magic Kitten/Puppy/Ponies/Bunny/What-Have-You series has to be one of the more bizarre. Now, I wasn't in these books' target demographic, so I didn't read them initially. Each series focuses on a magical animal either on the run from or looking for someone. They end up getting involved in a (usually white) young girl's problems, each time taking a different form, almost like an ersatz Quantum Leap. It's strange, because it almost feels like a character from a fantasy story is inserting themself into a slice-of-life setting. There are larger stories at play here, but we only get glimpses of them, and they're never resolved. When I read these, I kept on wondering if I would ever see more of what was happening below the surface. It's all very weird.
