Title: Beginner friendly
Fandom: Top Gun: Maverick
Characters: Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Beau "Cyclone" Simpson, Maggie "Letdown" Miller(OC)
Relationships: Rooster x OC
Rating: General
Summary: One night at the club La Cubanita, Rooster spots an unexpected guest.
Notes: Okay, this is really random, because I wrote half of this on my way home from last week's dance party and finished it later. This is a small additional chapter to a Top Gun-fic of mine, For a little bit of sunshine.
Beginner friendly
"I've got you a drink. You looked like you'd need one," Rooster said when Maggie joined him at the bar. Her cheeks were rosy, her lips curled up and sweat was glowing on her collarbone. She was wearing a flowy blue top with a pair of skinny jeans and her dancing shoes.
"Thank you," she said, beaming at him.
"They're keeping you busy tonight," he stated.
"As expected," she said, "since I told my groups there would be more beginner friendly songs in this party. And beforehand I convinced Jackie to play more beginner friendly songs," she added, throwing a glance at the DJ. "At least they dare to ask me for a dance. Cheers," she raised her glass.
Rooster raised his own and they both drank while watching the couples on the dance floor until something made the aviator choke on his beer.
"Holy shit," he mumbled.
"What is it? A dreadful outfit?" Maggie wondered.
"Worse," he said, leaning forward to take a closer look. Perhaps his mind was playing tricks on him, and it was just a lookalike as he wasn't the only tall and well-built, dark-haired fifty-something in San Diego. But it was dedinitely him, dancing with a woman in a dress with printed roses on it. "Cyclone."
Surprisingly, Maggie's face lit up.
"Where?" she wondered, her eyes now searching for the vice admiral.
"Two o'clock, with the woman in a dress with roses," he told her.
"That's Mrs Cyclone," she said when she spotted them in the crowd.
Rooster nodded his head and they both started watching the older aviator. It felt so odd to see him like this: wearing his civilian clothes, in a club in San Diego, dancing salsa.
"He's a bit stiff, isn't he?" Rooster said as Cyclone led his wife back to the open position, concentrating to keep the beat. He could see his mouth moving as he was probably counting out loud: one, two, three, five, six seven.
"He's still a beginner" Maggie pointed out. "We've all been there."
"I know, but it's kind of nice to know that there is something I'm at a more advanced level than him," he admitted. "It's like finding out that your Math teacher roots for the same team as you and it makes you see him more like an actual human being."
"Or start doubting your sports choices," Maggie said.
"Or that."
About two songs later, Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson led his wife off the floor and when they spotted Maggie at the bar, they decided to join her. They didn't even seem to notice Rooster next to her. A grin broke out on the dance instructor's face, being genuinely happy to see them, but at the same time she felt a little awkward as in the class they were on a first name basis with everyone by default, while he was Rooster's superior.
"I'm so glad you could come!" she said, deciding not to say any names.
"Good evening, Sir," Rooster greeted him with a nod, and Maggie noticed that he had straightened his back a little more.
"Lieutenant," Cyclone turned to the aviator with a smile. "I didn't know you danced as well."
"For quite a few years now," Rooster said. "Although I havent' been doing it very often until recently," he added, throwing a glance at Maggie who smiled at him.
"Well, let me introduce you to my wife, Barbara," the vice admiral said. "Honey, this is Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, one of the aviators who succeeded in our latest mission."
"I've heard a lot about you," Mrs Cyclone smiled at the young man. "It's nice to finally meet you."
"Actually, I came to ask Maggie for a dance," Cyclone said. "I hope I wasn't interrupting anything."
"Not at all," Maggie said.
"In that case, may I have this dance?" the aviator asked, and when she said yes, he led her to the dance floor.
As much as he wanted to see Cyclone with Maggie, Rooster found it awkward to stay alone at the bar with the vice admiral's wife, so instead, he turned to her:
"May I, Mrs Simpson?" he asked, holding out his hand to her.
"Yes," the woman said, " and please, call me Barbara," she added as they walked to the dance floor.
Beau "Cyclone" Simpson was visibly nervous as they started to dance which surprised Maggie a little, knowing how confident the aviator was at his job, on the other hand, she knew how nerve-wracking it was for a beginner to ask the teacher for a dance. When they would have to lead steps to someone way more experienced than him and there would not be anyone to tell them what the next step would be. She tried to be at ease with him, pretending she hadn’t noticed his mistakes and just enjoying the dance, hoping that it would make him feel more relaxed. However, after he led her a perfect coca cola turn (something they learned in their last class), a wide grin broke out on Maggie’s face - she couldn’t help it. Seeing her changed expression, the aviator startled a little.
“Sorry if I messed it up,” he said.
“No, you didn’t,” Maggie assured him. “It was actually great. That’s why I was smiling.”
Poor man, she thought to herself, this must have been extremely hard for him. Not only dancing with his teacher as a beginner but having his subordinate witnessing all of it. It must have been excruciating for him. Still, he asked for a detailed review of his performance once the song ended. He came here to practice after all.
“Lieutenant Bradshaw is an amazing dancer,” Barbara Simpson told her husband when he and Maggie joined them at the bar. She was glowing, with an ear-to-ear smile on her face, just like any woman after a good dance.
“It seems you’re a man of many talents,” the vice admiral stated.
“And even more practice, Sir,” Rooster said. “Would you like to see it?”
Cyclone raised a brow at the question, but then he smiled and nodded his head.
“Sure.”
Then the mustached aviator turned to Maggie and asked her for a dance. He couldn’t hide his smug smile as he led her back to the floor, ready to show his superior how to dance salsa.
“For a moment I thought you’d ask him to dance,” Maggie admitted as they returned to the floor.
“I think he did, too,” Rooster said with a chuckle.
“Just don’t intimidate him too much,” she told him when they stood into position.
“Maybe a little bit,” Rooster said and began to lead.

warnings: slight language, naval inaccuracies!! (even tho I just did my own fleet week tour I still don't know shit, I'm just a girl)
Tumblr media
The ocean breeze filtered through your hair as you stood off to the side, eyes fixated on the impressive carriers in front of you. The sun felt hot on your skin and excitement was buzzing through your veins as you listened to your best friend in your ear… well, half-listened.
“We’re brunching! Come on, meet us at Malibu Farm,” Maggie said and you sighed.
“I told you it’s Fleet Week, Im already down here,” you replied and you could feel her eyes roll on the other side of the phone.
“I would be supportive if you were trying to bag one of those Navy hotties but come on… bottomless mimosas and all the dirt on Stephanie’s breakup are better than some boats,” she said.
“I will see you for drinks tonight,” was all you replied before hanging up. You’d tried (very unsuccessfully) to convince some of your friends to come with you, telling them about how cool these carriers were and how you only got the chance to see them up close and personal once a year but they had zero interest… you were the only one in your circle who found this sort of thing interesting, and you would have been bummed except for the fact that you were more than okay doing things by yourself.
It wasn’t uncommon for you to go to a concert or a museum solo, you actually enjoyed it… you loved hanging out with your friends but it was nice to not be tied to what the majority of the group wanted to do (or didn’t want to do), and as you waited in line you were actually a little glad none of them had taken you up on your offer. If Maggie were here she’d be ogling the cute officer who appeared to be getting ready to take your group on board, and she’d spend the whole tour trying to flirt with him instead of listening to what he had to say.
You were content to wait in line as long as it took, taking in the beautiful ships to your left before switching to people watching, you knew this week drew all kinds of visitors and you found it entertaining to see such an eclectic mix of people all in one space… there were the obvious ex-Navy types, returning to their roots and reliving the glory days, there were couples who looked a little out of their element but excited for something new to do as a date, and families with kids… you even spotted an entire elementary class on a field trip. Spare your friend group, most people were more than interested in the opportunity to spend a day aboard multi-million dollar vessels and you were one of them.
Across the way Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw was chatting with his teammates about how much they wanted today to be over… it wasn’t that he hated Fleet Week, because he did enjoy it for about the first hour, but after that it became tiresome to give the same spiel over and over and over. They’d all tried to get out of it, Natasha had even gone so far as trying to manifest a deployment, but according to the higher ups there was no excuse for the Navy’s best and brightest to not make an appearance at an event happening so close to their home base.
But then he saw you and he couldn’t help but smile as he watched you seem so enamored by everything around you… you didn’t hold an ounce of annoyance over the fact you’d been standing in that same spot going on half an hour now, something he’d seen from other visitors a dozen times already, and when a gust of wind kicked up your hair and sent it fluttering around your face you gave a half hearted attempt to tame it, but really you were just enjoying the breeze and the sun on your skin and he knew he had to know your name. He watched Jake getting ready to take your group aboard and he had to know if you’d abandon the formal tour in favor of letting him take you up instead.
You were eavesdropping on a conversation between a sailor and a kid just ahead of you, a soft smile on your lips as you listened to just how excited both parties were to be talking about the ship in front of you and you were so focused on them that you didn’t notice a person approaching you, not until his shadow cast across your face and when you turned you saw a man who nearly knocked the wind out of you… he was tall and solid, arms straining against the short sleeves of his khaki uniform and you thought that no one should look good in that color yet here he was proving you wrong. His golden brown waves glistened in the direct sunlight and he had a slight smirk beneath a mustache that you really wanted to hate, but you really didn’t… he was handsome, potentially one of the most handsome men you’d ever seen, and here he was standing directly in front of you and you looked up at him expectantly, waiting for him to say something.
“Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw, ma’am,” he introduced, extending his hand for you to shake which you did as you gave him your name and a smile. “What brings you out today?”
“A bizarre fascination with ships the size of planets,” you replied and he laughed. It was warm and a little rough around the edges, much like you’d appraised him to be in your short interaction, and you wanted to hear it again.
“Well, my day wrapped up not too long ago and I couldn’t help but notice you waiting for a tour…” he started, leaning in slightly with a mischievous look on his face as if he was about to tell you a secret, “and between you and me, your tour guide is a dud.” he finished and you looked towards the man, tall, blonde and oozing charisma and you had a feeling Bradley was lying to you as you watched him charm the entirety of your group with one sentence… but you weren’t feeling too keen on calling him out on his fib.
“Oh no, is that so?” you replied, disappointment lacing your tone.
“Mmhm,” he hummed. “I think you oughta let me take you up, make sure you get the tour you deserve,” he propositioned and you nodded, a smirk tugging at your lips.
“I think that might be for the best… for the sake of a thorough Navy education and all,” you said and he nodded, gesturing towards the ramp and he held out his hand for you to take as you pulled yourself onto the steep landing. His hand was warm in yours and all-encompassing as he held it and made sure you made it safely before letting it fall back to your side and you were almost a little disappointed when he did.
He led you into the cargo hold, a massive room filled with so many things your eyes had a hard time adjusting at first. You trailed alongside him as he explained everything to you, sparing no detail as he went and you were particularly fascinated by the boat that was rigged to be deployed at a moments notice, positioned right in front of a hatch door, and he told you it was primarily there for search and rescue missions as he rattled off information about how long it takes to get it down into the water and pointed out the crane used to move it around as needed.
You listened with rapt attention as you continued through, you added a quip or a question here and there but mostly you were hanging onto his every word as he pointed out things like their freezer and the gym, and you realized you might have been content to listen to this man read you his grocery list and you had to make a conscious effort to focus on the words themselves and not just the voice that was speaking them. As you made your way up a steep and narrow stairwell, so much so you might have described it closer to a ladder than stairs, he stayed right behind you where he could catch you if you fell and you tried to ignore the fact that his diligence almost made you want to fall.
“There’s a lot up here,” he said as he led you down a hallway lined with doors, “but it’s mostly just bunks and offices. We’re not technically supposed to show you this, but… I won’t tell if you won’t,” he added as he pushed one of the doors open and you pretended to lock your lips and throw away the key as you peeked inside, taking in the modest living quarters with multiple twin beds.
“So, this is where you sleep when you’re deployed?” you asked and he nodded, brow furrowing when you looked at him, clearly skeptical about something as your eyes trailed him top to bottom before returning to the beds in front of you, “how do you even fit?” you followed up and immediately you flushed, not meaning to ask that at all but it was the first thing that popped into your head and it flew out of your mouth before you could stop it.
“Not comfortably, sweetheart,” he replied with a laugh and you smiled softly at the term of endearment as he shut the door and nodded for you to follow. He talked about the photos lining the walls, telling you who was who or what was what in the ones he recognized before you went up another stairwell and before you could walk through the door frame in front of you he placed his hands on your shoulders, stopping you in your tracks.
You turned your head to look at him, an unasked question on your face, and he gave you that addictive smirk of his, “now this is the really fun part that very few people get to see,” he prefaced and you felt anticipation brimming as he kept his hands on you and guided you forward.
“Just breaking all the rules today aren’t you, Lieutenant Bradshaw?” you replied and he wanted to tell you that you could just call him Bradley but one look at the mischief in your eyes told him you knew that… you just liked calling him Lieutenant and he liked hearing it too much to stop you. When you turned your attention forward you were faced with two beautiful jets right in front of you and you faltered for a moment, stunned by the sheer impressiveness of the aircrafts.
“Holy shit,” you muttered, careful of your step as you approached one of them and Bradley tried to commit that look of awe on your features to memory, his heart stuttering at the sight. You instinctively reached a hand out before snapping it back, realizing you probably shouldn’t be touching things with price tags you couldn’t comprehend.
He chuckled, “go ahead, it’s mine so do your worst.”
He thought you might get whiplash with how quickly you turned to face him, “yours? How have we made it through this whole tour without you mentioning you’re a pilot?”
“Thought I’d keep you on your toes,” he replied as you returned your focus to his jet, hand trailing along the smooth metal as you walked around it.
“I never thought I’d get to see an F/A-18 in person… at least not one that’s active,” you sighed, and now he was certain his heart had stopped in his chest. “Tops out at what, twelve hundred?” you asked and he blinked in surprise, only able to nod in response because he didn’t quite trust his words right now. He knew he liked you as soon as he saw you, so much so he was taking you on his tenth tour of the day when all he’d wanted to do previously was go to the bar, but now he was worried he was in a little over his head as you appreciated his jet, having identified it immediately without any help from him. “God, this is incredible, Bradley,” you said, maybe a little breathless from how excited you were and before you knew it he was disappearing, leaving you standing at the nose with a confused expression.
You laughed when he returned, rolling a ladder to the side of his jet and beckoning you over. He hadn’t anticipated you to know anything about planes, or really have any interest beyond the first minute of being in front of it, but now that he knew otherwise he wanted to show you everything. He held onto your hand as you took each step, trailing right behind you just as he had in the stairwells and when you got to the landing he started pulling the canopy back and you let out another soft gasp.
“Can you get in trouble for this?” you asked, turning to look at him. You knew private tours with high ranking pilots were not standard for Fleet Week, and you also knew this wasn’t an area most people would be allowed in, and you worried for a brief moment what would happen to him if anyone caught you.
He shook his head, “you’re accompanied by a Lieutenant, we’re fine,” he answered, smiling as you leaned over slightly to look inside his cockpit and his heart was thudding in his chest at the sheer wonder in your eyes. He started pointing out all of the controls, telling you what they did and why, and he answered your every question just as he had with the rest of the ship. “Sweetheart, I’ve gotta be honest… I’ve never met anyone who gave a damn about these jets that didn't work in or around them already.”
You pulled your attention back to him with an incredulous look, “how could they not?” you asked, and you wanted to keep your gaze on those pretty brown eyes that were locked on you, but the novelty hadn’t quite worn off yet and you looked back inside the jet. “I mean… this is next level engineering wrapped up in a pretty package, what’s better than that?” He thought you were beautiful when he saw you standing on your own with your hair blowing in the breeze and the sun kissing your skin, he thought you were beautiful when you laughed at his dumb jokes in the cargo hold, but right now he was certain he’d never seen anything more beautiful than you slightly bent over and leaning into his cockpit as you truly appreciated the one thing he loved most in this world.
“Please let me take you on a date,” he blurted out, unable to stop himself and you looked at him a little surprised. You’d been hoping since he approached you that he’d ask, but you couldn’t help but laugh a little at the unexpected timing.
“Ask me again after the tour,” you replied with a smirk and though it vaguely sounded like rejection he couldn’t help but smile. If you wanted to make him work for it then he absolutely would. You asked him a question about the gauges and he told you exactly what they measured, and when you finally made your way back down the ladder he even let you sit on the second to last step as he wheeled it back to its place.
“Bradley!” you squealed when he whipped it around, hands bracing on the poles on either side of you and you were a little breathless when you were suddenly facing him, looking up at him as his strong hands gripped just above your head as he continued pushing you through the open area.
“Just wanted a better view,” he replied and you flushed at the compliment. Even though it was only two steps he still offered you his hand as you got off and of course you still accepted it, lingering for a moment before dropping it. He took you back through the carrier a different way than you’d came so he could show you absolutely everything, still narrating as he went. Truthfully, there wasn’t much difference on this route than the other but it was longer and he wanted to drag this out. He knew as soon as you stepped off the ship he wouldn’t have any reason to keep you longer than he already had, and he wanted to postpone that moment as long as he could.
When you entered the now familiar cargo hold you couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed, you didn’t want your time with Bradley to come to an end but it seemed it was inevitable as he led you down the ramp and back onto solid ground. Your eyes were bright when you turned to face him and you still had that smile on that hadn’t seemed to leave your face all day and it was another sight he wanted to commit to memory. You had surprised the hell out of him, turned his boring day around the second he saw you and he knew with certainty he couldn’t get enough of you… and you were in the exact same boat. You knew when you got here today you’d have a good time, that the other man Bradley insisted was a dud still would have given a good tour and you’d have gotten exactly what you came for but the man in front of you exceeded every one of your expectations and then some, and you weren’t looking forward to the moment you had to go back to your car and not have his eyes on you anymore.
“Bradley, that was…” you sighed, “that was incredible, I don’t really know how to thank you for that.”
“Let me take you out,” he replied easily and you flushed, the tour was over and he was wasting no time in asking you out again, and this time you let him.
You nodded, “I’m free tonight.” His grin was wide as he fished his phone out of his pocket for you to input your number, and you couldn’t help but mirror him when he told you to put your address as well so he could pick you up… if this was anyone else, if you hadn’t just spent the afternoon with him catering to your every query and whim, you would have told him no. You would have said you could meet him somewhere, but you trusted him. The few hours spent together showed you that you could, and that wasn’t lost on Bradley. If you’d said no he wouldn’t have even blinked, he would have suggested something else that made you more comfortable, but you didn’t say no… and that caused his chest to tighten as he looked down at your beautiful smile.
“I’ll pick you up at seven,” he said, leaning in to press a chaste kiss to your cheek and you felt your skin tingling as he pulled away. “Wear something comfortable.”
You nodded, a little curious as to what he could have planned but you could just tell if you asked he wouldn’t say, and you were more than happy to let this man surprise you. “I’ll see you tonight, Bradley.”
“And I’ll be counting down every second.”

A Rainy Day | Boxer!Bradley x Bambi
Tumblr media
spookweek masterlist | fic masterlist
synopsis: after plans are soiled, Bradley thinks of something the two of you can share on a rainy day.
warnings: mentions of terminally ill parents, upsetting childhoods.
Tumblr media
The disappointment on your face is palpable, a deep frown etched into your features as you stare out of the window. Today was one of Bradley’s only days off with the pick-up in clients recently. It had been marked on your calendar as Pumpkin Patch Day for four weeks now.
Lightning flashes, followed by a threatening rumble of thunder somewhere beyond the window.
Bradley scrubs a hand over his jaw and sighs softly.
“Maybe we could do something inside instead?” He offers up weakly, knowing how much effort you had put into planning today, and how excited you had been for it.
You turn your head and look at him over your shoulder. He can tell that you try to look optimistic for him, but there’s no hiding the clear sadness.
“Like what?”
He looks around the apartment. Wracking his brain for ideas, he quickly realises that his upbringing didn’t exactly prime him for this sort of planning.
“Is there anything else you liked to do as a kid? — What do kids do for fun, anyways?” He’s almost talking to himself for the latter part of his question, staring at the carpet. He’s trying. You can appreciate that much.
That had been your whole reasoning for this. There was so much that Bradley hadn’t gotten to do as a kid — his mother had been sick, and the closest thing he had to a father ran a boxing gym that simply wasn’t a suitable environment.
“Oh!” He thinks suddenly. You lift your chin and give him your attention. “You know one thing I really liked to do as a kid?”
This perks a real reaction, enough for the big dog on your lap to lift his head and look quizzically toward your boyfriend, like he’s listening too.
“You know the scene in the movie Hook where Maggie Smith is reading to the little girl and they’re in that fort? — My mom and I used to build stuff like that when she was too sick to go out.”
Your face twists, you frown morphing from disappointment to pity at once — but he doesn’t mind the pity, not from you. He knows you just want more for him. It’s just that all of his stories are so… sad.
“You would build pillow forts together?” You ask quietly, trying to imagine him all small and buried under blankets and pillows, tucked under his mother’s arm.
“All the time.” She was too sick to go out a lot. But, this isn’t one of his sad memories. He finds a smile and pushes himself out of the armchair. “Come on, I’ll show you how.”
His first instruction is to find all the blankets that you can — he knows that you’ve got plenty. By the time you return with arms full, you find that he has somewhat deconstructed your living room.
The couch is pushed way back and the coffee table is now by kitchen island, the couch cushions are on the ground and there’s a lamp right in the middle — with its lampshade discarded.
As you open your mouth to question his changes, he steps over to you and kisses the top of your head, scooping up your mass of blankets. “Perfect, and then we just want to drape them over the lamp — and over the back of the couch, and prop this up over here.”
There’s a method to his madness, clearly, as you watch his little plan start to come together.
Another idea sparks in his head as he’s busy positioning the blankets. “You want to light some candles? — We can play monopoly or something.”
“I don’t play monopoly with cheaters.” Comes out of your mouth more quickly than you had intended, making his head whip towards you. His lips twist upwards, brown eyes narrowing playfully.
“Fine. How about a movie?”
With the candles lit, your small apartment seems abundantly less gray. It’s more shades of orange and amber now with the flickering light and the soft glow of the television.
Bradley’s awkwardly curled within the ‘fort’ with you on his chest and his arms around you. His chin rests atop your head and you can tell that this is one of those times that he really lets himself relax.
It’s not quite as easy for him to fit into the pillow fort as it had been when he was a kid, but it brings back a strange and sweeping sense of nostalgia.
He’s quick to pull you against him, curled up and watching a movie meant for kids, his thumb trailing patterns just under the breach of your t-shirt.
He’ll let you take him to the pumpkin patch someday, and he’ll appreciate your planning and make sure it’s a good day — but there’s nothing that beats this.

Thinking back, you don’t think you’ve ever been happier. You were currently sitting on the couch, reading a book. Your legs were stretched out under a soft throw across Matt’s lap, while he was going over some case files.
He brought some tea to his lips and his other hand continued to run across the page. The afternoon sun washed him in a beautiful amber hue. You wish to cradle his face the same way the sunbeams did.
“What?” You blinked a few times before you realised Matt had said something. “You’re staring.”
You chuckled, knowing he wasn’t upset, merely teasing you. “It’s nothing.”
Matt only hummed and you went back to your reading. Well, you tried, but as you stared at the words, your mind drifted.
Saint Agnes was the only home you knew. You never knew your parents, only the sisters who raised you. The story of the child hero who lost his eyesight saving someone’s life was one all the children knew. Hell’s Kitchen didn’t get much good attention, so this kid was kind of like a symbol to you all.
You remember when Matt first arrived. He was quiet and kept to himself. Many of the other kids would whisper about him when he would pass and you knew he could hear it. Some of the boys complained about his nightmares, said he was possessed. You refused to believe that.
One day on the playground, Matthew got corned by two boys. One took his cane and when Matt pushed at them the other slapped him, his glasses flying off. You ran up to one of them and turned them around.
“What is your problem? Are you brain-dead? Is that it? What? Did you find out that even blind he’s at a higher reading level than you?” One of the benefits of growing up here: you knew everyone’s buttons and how to press them effectively. Bradley was practically a neanderthal. He was insecure about his intelligence and used brute force to get his way.
He turned on you but before he could even raise his fist Matt swung, knocking him off kilter. By then, enough shouting had happened to alert one of the sisters to the commotion and you were all escorted to Sister Mary’s office.
After that, you and Matt were thick as thieves. You were always getting into trouble. Kids could be brutal and you watched each other’s backs. You were more quick-witted while Matt was a better fighter. Together you made an unstoppable team.
But you both grew up. Matt left for college and you lost touch. You always wondered what had happened to him. You stayed close to home, you continued to do volunteer work at Saint Agnes. That’s where you met him again. You were delivering some donations from a clothing drive when you noticed Maggie slinking around.
Old habits die hard. You felt like a kid again as you followed her through the halls, speculating about where she was going. She was looking over her shoulder a lot, so it must have been something big. You wondered what the sacred sister was up to.
You heard her scold some children before they ran into the hallway. You caught them in the hall and asked them what was in the room.
“Some guy. We thought he was dead but then he woke up.”
“Yeah, he looks terrible.”
They took off when they heard other footsteps in the corridor. You hid behind a corner as another sister moved down the stairs.
Your feet carried you to the door, listening from just outside.
“I need to change your gauze,” You heard Sister Maggie say, “Preferably without you flailing around like an idiot.”
You heard clinking and a zipper. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by any of this. You were always pissed off. Of course, back then, you were just a boy who lost your eyesight.”
Your mind started spinning. A blind guy, hidden away in the orphanage? You knew it could be anyone but you couldn’t stop thinking it was him. It was obviously someone Sister Maggie knew. The description fit your old friend too well for it to be a coincidence.
You had seen in the paper that Matthew was a lawyer now, responsible for taking down Wilson Fisk. It seems over the years his wit had become more scathing. You were proud of his sharp tongue.
You enter the doorway, your curiosity getting the best of you. Your steps were quiet and both of them seemed too wrapped in their conversation to notice you. You looked over the body, though you couldn’t see the face.
“Congratulations. You finally caught me.” You knew that voice, you had heard it on the news. You stepped closer and his battered face was more than enough proof.
“Matthew?!”
You helped him recover in the church basement. You caught up on life and all that he had been up to. You listened to his self-pity monologues and his declarations against god. You were much more sympathetic to his righteous anger than Maggie was. You helped him set up his punching bag and kept him company. You even got to meet Karen, though the circumstances they were under were quite frightening and deadly.
Since Matt’s recovery and the revival of the Daredevil, you and Matt became a lot closer. You fell back into your old ways. You felt comfortable with him, like falling into a distant memory. You didn’t realise just how much you had missed him.
He introduced you to Foggy (and reintroduced you to Karen in a much safer and calm environment) and you were glad they were in his life. He seemed happy around them, less rageful than you remembered him.
Matt leaned on you a lot as he slowly brought himself back to life. You helped him clean his apartment, find a good Devil-to-Matt ratio, and process the betrayal he felt from Margaret’s actions.
Now you were dating Matt. You don’t really remember how it happened. One day you were friends and then the next you were sharing sweet kisses and holding each other as you slept. It was the most natural progression you had ever experienced.
You’ve never been happier. Matt was kind and sweet. He doted on you and made you feel special every day. Even in mundane moments like these, where he had to bring work home, he was still spending time with you.
As he was reading he was rubbing your leg over the blanket. He looked almost holy in the evening sun. Matt seemed so relaxed lately, it was a look you enjoyed on him. For most of your time knowing Matt, he was full of rage. But now, he seemed so warm. He was just so amazing.
In this moment you realised something. “I love you.”
Matt’s hand stopped on the page for just a moment, “I love you too.”
He said it so nonchalantly. As if he had told you this a million times, not like he was saying this to you for the first time. You sat up, shocked by his response. When you pulled your legs away from him he sat up straighter, a look of confusion on his face.
“What?” He asked you for a second time today.
You blinked at him dumbly as your mouth gaped like a fish. “Wh- eh- You…you love me?”
Matt's confusion melted into a blinding smile. “Yes. And you love me; have for a while now.”
He had to bite back laughter as you continued to gape at him. “But I’ve never said that before. How did you know?”
Matt grabbed your hand, “I’ve known since I met you.”
“You’ve loved me since we were kids?” Matt did laugh at that.
“No, but you did.” You smacked his arm as he continued to laugh.
You think back to the first day you met. It was after the fight. You sat outside the office on a bench with Matt waiting for your turn for questioning. He was a mystery to you. He was normally quiet, keeping to himself. You were the same in that regard.
You preferred to stay in the background and learn from your environment. It had done you well. You wondered why Matthew had chosen to live in the background. You felt yourself worrying for him, closely eyeing his cheek where you saw a welt slowly growing.
You had to admit he was pretty. His features were soft despite the permanent scowl on his face. His hair was kinda shaggy and you thought his sunglasses were cool. You mentally traced the silhouette of his face.
Mathew was older than you by two years. He was a “big kid” and you wondered if he found you annoying. Many of the children here did. You played around with the idea of him becoming your friend. You weren’t sure what that would look like but you wanted that.
You felt your stomach twist when you thought about how he had fought for you. It wasn’t a particularly unpleasant feeling, but a new one. Something about this boy was magical. You wanted to learn everything about him: his favourite colour, his favourite book, his favourite toy. Maybe he didn’t play with toys at all. He was nine after all. You wondered what he did for fun, if not playing with toys.
Matt tilted his head and you wondered what he was thinking. You knew that was his confused/thinking face. A small smirk spread across his face before he turned to you. You held your breath, hoping he couldn’t feel you staring at him. You stayed that way for a while before he turned his head back to the wall, chuckling.
It hit you then. He was right.
“You smiled…” Matt’s laughter was calming down.
“What are you talking about?” You couldn’t believe this man.
“On that stupid bench…when I saw you I fell in love,” You laughed in disbelief. “And you smiled because you knew."
On his face was a similar smirk. Little Matty wasn’t as far in the past as Matt pretended he was. You couldn’t bring yourself to be mad at the man in front of you. Not when your heart was threatening to beat out of your chest. Trying to escape the confines of your ribs and land in the hands of the man you loved. The man you loved. The man you have loved since you were seven years old.
You brought your hands to his face and crumpled as you felt him melt into them. “You smug bastard.”
Matt chuckled, his unfocused gaze on you. “A smug bastard that you love.”
You chuckled as you brought your lips to his. It was soft, sweet. It was everything you needed. Matt’s hands rested on the side of your ribcage, his smile ever-present. You leaned back, breaking off the kiss but not going far.
“I love you, Matty.” You felt his hands fall to your hips.
“I love you, (Y/N).” He closed the space between you and this kiss was a bit deeper. You felt like you were on cloud nine. It all felt so surreal. Suddenly a thought crossed your mind and you pulled away. You laughed when Matt whined, chasing after you.
“Wait, I’ve loved you since we were kids. How long have you loved me?” A faint blush decorated Matt’s cheeks. He pretended to think about it and you smiled at his antics.
“Let’s see…I knew I loved you when you were sending me off for college. I remember you were trying your best not to cry. And you wouldn’t let me hug you until I was getting in the taxi because you said you wouldn’t let me go otherwise.” He chuckled at the memory and you felt tears pooling in your eyes.
“When we did hug goodbye, I found it much harder to let you go than I anticipated. It took all of my resolve to do so, and I released it was because I did love you.” Matt pulled you into his lap and you moved your hands from his face to wrap them around his neck.
“I don’t remember when I fell for you. Probably when we were teenagers. I don’t know for sure, though. I do know,” He said as he moved your hair out of your face before resting his hand in its place.
“That I have loved you for a long time. I don’t think I ever stopped. I know that I never will.” He swiped his thumb under your cheek, collecting a tear that had escaped.
“Alight, alright,” You said through a sniffle. “You win.”
He laughed, his smile creating wrinkle lines across his face. “Of course I do. I get to kiss you, hold you, and love you. Every day that I wake up in your arms, I am winning.”
You roll your eyes at him and call him a sap. “It may be sappy, but it’s true nonetheless, my love.”
You are absolutely positive he could sense how your body responded to the nickname. Nothing got past him. Not the way your breath caught in your throat. Not the way your heart beats harder. And certainly not the way your body temperature rises.
You felt his other hands trace circles on the skin of your hip. You weren’t sure when he had weaselled his hand under your shirt but you couldn’t be bothered with that. “You’re too cute…my love.”
“Matty…” It was a plea. You burned for him. You thirsted for him and knew he was the only thing that could satiate you.
“Yes, my love?” He teased.
He knew what he was doing. He was making you putty in his hands. You leaned forward and kissed him with hunger, with passion. It was words you didn’t know to say. It was feelings you couldn’t express. It was an encrypted message that you hoped he could decode.
He received the message loud and clear. “I say we take this into the bedroom and I can show you just how much I love you. How does that sound my love?”
Before you could even respond he was picking you up and carrying you across the room, your giggles floating through the air.

✤: Fluff
❂: Angst
❀: Smut
Full-length series:

Eight years ago, Bradley Bradshaw was just a college boyfriend who broke your heart. Now, he’s back in your life after a coincidental reunion, and he’s adamant about starting up a friendship. Will it be possible to be just friends with Bradley, or is he inevitably going to end up ruining everything you’ve spent the better part of a decade rebuilding?
❀❂✤ That Summer — Bradley x Reader – Complete
One night during the summer you turned eighteen, you woke up to a surprise. Your father, a retired Navy Admiral, had posted bail for the son of a former colleague who was now orphaned and had gotten himself mixed up with the law. Instead of letting him get lost in the judicial system, your father signed himself up as Bradley Bradshaw’s guardian to prevent him from going to juvie. You were explicitly told to stay away from the boy in the attic room. But as the summer went on, you and Bradley struck up an unlikely friendship that turned into a forbidden relationship. Bradley tipped your world upside down, challenging everything you had once thought you knew. How could the two of you think it would end any differently than it did when your father called the cops the night he found the two of you in bed together?
❀❂✤ Golden Hour — Bradley x Bob x OC [Dr. Olive James]
Willow, Georgia. Barely even a town, just a speck on a map that you tried to wipe off, mistaking it for a crumb. You’re the outsider: a fancy New York doctor, fresh out of a failed engagement, with zero primary care experience. You’re also the new town doctor, taking over for a recent retiree who was beloved. His son, Bob Floyd, is the other physician at the practice, and takes an immediate dislike to you. But you were looking for a fresh start, and Willow doesn’t seem all that bad if you can get past the fact that there's only one restaurant in town. It helps that you've caught the eye of Bradley Bradshaw, the town attorney, despite the fact that you vowed to take a break from dating. How long until you start to make friends in a town where social circles have been set in stone since elementary school? And what will it take to make Bob Floyd see you’re not as bad as he wants to believe you are?
Miniseries:
❀❂✤ His Best Friend's Wedding — Bradley x Reader – Complete
Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw has been your best friend for a decade. He’s also your fiancé’s best man. So when he shows up at your hotel room the night before your wedding, it’s just because he’s your friend, right?
The Stranger — Bradley x Bob x OC
Bradley Bradshaw left an impression — after finding him naked and passed out after a night of drinking in your front yard, he’s anxious to never see you again in his life and relive the embarrassment. But there’s something about him you just can’t let go. He’s a project, and you hate to admit you love a fixer upper. Bradley is hesitant to let you in, but you’re persistent. Is he making a massive mistake?
One shots:

Your life changed forever the moment you fell for Bradley Bradshaw. But his life wasn’t an easy one to fit into. He had more baggage than lost and found at JFK airport. You were always one for a fixer upper. Bradley could be your ultimate passion project. But was he too far gone for you to save him?
❂ Darkness — Bradley x Reader – Complete
Darkness surrounds your life with Bradley. But every time he pulls away, you pull him back in. It's your job to save him from the darkness.

Fic Mondays #1 - Sep/24 week 1
ok, so this is a thing I'm trying to make where every week I do a compilation of fics I've read. Since this is the first one I'm doing like a favorite fics kind of thing
How Two Become Three - Chapter 1 - nikonic - Criminal Minds (US TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Criminal Minds Ship: Jemily/Reader (poly) Why I rec it: This is the first work in a LONG series (like, really long. Don't know how the author does it). The series varies a lot from angst, to smut, to fluff. I think this author does a really good job portraying and talking about triggering topics. And I absolutely love the consent and kink conversations throughout the stories. I recommend subscribing to the series or the author to get updates, since it's still being updated regularly.
Love Comes Quietly - Chapter 1 - Kattwyllie - Criminal Minds (US TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Criminal Minds Ship: Alex Blake/Reader Why I rec it: This is a very sweet roommates turned lovers. I like the writing, and I love the pacing of this fic.
Safety - Chapter 1 - DemonOfPuns - Biohazard | Resident Evil (Gameverse) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Resident Evil Village Ship: Alcina Dimitrescu/Reader (at some point reader becomes an original character) Why I rec it: The smut is 10/10, but the development of the relationship both between Sasha and Alcina; but also Sasha and the daughters is one of the cutest things I've read. I think this is one of my favorite fanfics of all time. It's long, it's got a good amount of angst; a good amount of fluff and the smut is sensational.
show me where it hurts - Chapter 1 - andromedusia - The Morning Show (TV 2019) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: The Morning Show Ship: Alex Levy/Maggie Brener Why I rec it: This is a masterpiece. It changed the chemistry of my brain and it changed me forever. Not only that, but I feel like there's a scene in this one that if it was canon it would've been an award winning scene.
far from broken - gleamin - The Morning Show (TV 2019) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: The Morning Show Ship: LAMB Why I rec it: This is so soft, and so cute. And a beautiful portrait of LAMB as a poly ship. This one changed my brain too, because you know what it made me see Bradley and Maggie differently.
com letras douradas, num papel bonito - jenhardings - The Morning Show (TV 2019) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: The Morning Show Ship: Alex Levy/Maggie Brener Why I rec it: The song this fic is based gives the perfect prompt. It's angsty and also kind of sweet at the same time.
Golden Cuffs - Chapter 1 - Kelyon - Once Upon a Time (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Once Upon a Time Ship: Rumpelstiltskin/Belle Why I rec it: This is a heavy-BDSM story. It's been a while since I've read it, to be honest with you. But I remember liking it a lot. And yes, this is probably the only fic with a f/m ship. I'm really not a fan of straight ships, I don't read fanfiction of them cause we usually have a lot of canon stuff. But rumbelle had some of the most amazing writers in a fandom, and to be honest, I'm sure there will be more fics of this ship in later editions of fic mondays.
the wine, the women, the bedroom hymns - asexualizing (Specialcookies) - Abbott Elementary (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Abbott Elementary Ship: Ava/Melissa/Barbara Why I rec it: This is the best use of a soulmate au scenario in a fic. By far; it's absolutely genius. Just go read it, do yourself that favor. (It's a bit angsty though, be warned.)
what will the signal be for your eyes to see me - TechnicolorRevel - Doctor Who (2005) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Doctor Who Ship: Thirteen Doctor/Yasmin Khan Why I rec it: This is another BDSM story, although not heavy. This one is beautiful, the characters are so well written in this.
a taste of infinity - Linnea_Ancalime - Doctor Who (2005) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Doctor Who Ship: Thirteen Doctor/Reader Why I rec it: One of the few x reader with non binary reader. It's smut, very soft. Delicious stuff.

if you sent me a request, I will be getting to those tonight :) thank you everyone who sent one!
on a different note entirely: I have two things I’m really wanting to write and I want to know everyone’s opinion!
I thought of a really soft scene between Faye and Bradley where they bring Olive home from the hospital. not to spoil anything but it would include the pups meeting Olive, picking the first record they’re gonna play for Olive, and Bradley taking care of Faye and Olive so we’ll. it makes me a pile of goo to think about tbh!
the other thing is the rewrite of the prologue for Silver Springs. I honestly debated for a long time and have decided that the story is going to be written in Sookie’s perspective now; I just don’t think I have what it takes to write from a male’s perspective!! I already started the rewrite and already feel so much better about the work I’ve produced.
now….which would you all like to see first?? that is the question…

Chapter 1 I Chapter 2 I Chapter 3 I Chapter 4 I Chapter 5 I Chapter 6 I Chapter 7 I Chapter 8 I Chapter 9
Tumblr media
Chapter summary: Maggie "Letdown" Miller planned it all: finish the workshop, lead a rueda and then go to The Hard Deck to meet Rooster and have her midnight kiss. However, due to a delay in the schedule, she cannot leave the salsa club on time. Does this mean she and Rooster can forget that kiss?
Not if it's up to Maverick.
Word count: 1678
Notes: This is a New Year's Eve special for one of my Top Gun fanfics, For a little bit of sunshine. Some fluff with a little Mavdad moment as well.
Alaskan midnight
Maggie “Letdown” Miller didn’t plan to step into the new year like this: standing in the crowded club, on her own, while the DJ was counting down the seconds until midnight. She agreed to do a workshop and lead a few ruedas in La Cubanita’s New Year’s Eve party way before she had even met Rooster. He and the rest of the Dagger Squad were in The Hard Deck, and Maggie wanted to join them before twelve o’clock, so she could have a midnight kiss - something she was dreaming about for a long time. She knew it was a huge cliché, sharing a kiss when the clock struck twelve, yet she still wanted it. As a romance writer, she had written several scenes like that, but it had never happened to her before.
However, to achieve that, she would have to arrive at The Hard Deck before midnight. She planned it all: to leave before the traffic got too heavy and get to the Coronado bar on time, but there was a delay in the schedule. She had to start the workshop later than they had planned, and even if she skipped one of the ruedas, it would still have been too late. The only thing she could do was to text Rooster that she couldn’t make it and be very sorry for herself.
She watched the excited crowd counting down the seconds, forcing herself to smile, trying to ignore her sinking heart. When the clock finally struck midnight she saw the people hugging, kissing and clinking glasses.
“Happy New Year,” she turned to DJ Inlaw - a man in his mid-thirties, who was a regular DJ in La Cubanita, but surprisingly, a terrible dancer.
“Happy New Year,” he replied, smiling back at her. “I won’t kiss you,” he added.
“Of course,” Maggie nodded with a small laugh.
“But I can give you a hug,” the DJ continued, opening his arms.

Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw didn’t plan to welcome the new year like this: sitting on a motorbike, next to a police car, waiting for the red light to turn green. He regretted listening to Maggie. For him it was clear that he wanted to spend New Year’s Eve with her, and when it turned out that she would be working that night, he offered to go to La Cubanita, but she talked him out of it, not wanting to separate him from his friends. Instead, she convinced him that she would be the one joining them in The Hard Deck as she also had friends partying there (most of them were his friends, too). However, seeing her message that she couldn’t make it, Rooster realized that it was a bad idea. Now he could forget the midnight kiss he wanted to share with her. It would have been so romantic taking her into his arms when the clock struck twelve. But it wouldn’t happen, at least not this year.
“What’s wrong?” Pete “Maverick” Mitchell asked when he heard him sigh.
“Maggie cannot come,” Rooster said. “There was a delay with the workshop and now she won’t be able to get here due to the traffic.”
Maverick nodded, while his thoughts were already racing in his mind. Glancing out of the window, he saw his motorbike parking next to the cars, and he had an idea.
“She can’t make it until midnight, but you might get there,” he said with a smile forming in the corner of his mouth.
“How?” The younger aviator burst out. “I can’t fly there!”
“You don’t have to. You can go by motorbike,” Maverick said.
“But I don’t know how to drive it.”
“I’ll take you, so you won’t miss your New Year’s kiss.”
“And what about your New Year's kiss?” the kid wondered, throwing a glance at Penny Benjamin behind the bar.
Maverick looked at her, too. He wanted to kiss her, but he found the kid getting his kiss more important than his own. Taking him to his girl was a fatherly thing to do, even if the kid in question was a thirty-something adult.
“I’ve had my fair share of those,” the aviator said. “Let’s go.”
However, despite the motorbike being faster and easier to navigate on the crowded roads, it still wasn’t enough. Maverick crossed a few red lights, but there were way too many cars and people out there to go full speed. He was still dangerous, but he didn’t want to risk the lives of the people partying on the streets. Hitting someone on New Year’s Eve would definitely give Admiral Cain a reason to fire him for good, and now Iceman wasn’t around to save his ass.
They weren’t too far from La Cubanita when the lights turned red again, and Maverick was about to speed up, just a little bit, when Rooster spotted the police car stopping at the same red light, but at the line next to them. Maverick had no other choice but to stop and wait. His gaze was jumping between the police car and the traffic lights, waiting for the green light when the clock struck twelve. He heard people cheering, car horns honking and fireworks crackling. They were too late.
“I’m sorry, Rooster,” he said, lowering his head.
The kid, however, strengthened his grip around the older aviator’s waist. At least he was there with him.
“Happy New Year, Mav,” he said.
Warmth spread out in Maverick’s chest hearing the kid’s words. He knew it wasn’t ideal: sitting on a motorbike with Rooster, at a red light, next to a police car. Yet he couldn’t help smiling.
“Happy New Year, son,” he said.

“May I have this dance?”
Maggie was finishing a text to her father when she heard the question, and once she looked up, she almost dropped her phone.
“Bradley!” she exclaimed and a grin broke out on her face. “What are you doing here?” she asked.
“I came for the New Year’s kiss,” he said, enjoying that he managed to surprise her. “But I missed it due to a red light and a police car.”
“You drove here?” she wondered. If that was the case, he might have left The Hard Deck before she messaged him, she stated in mind.
“It wasn’t me. It was Maverick. We came by his motorbike,” Rooster told her, throwing a glance at the older aviator who was ordering himself a drink at the bar. “When I got your message, he offered me a ride.”
“I owe him one, then,” Maggie said.
“We couldn’t make it,” Rooster reminded her.
Maggie looked at her watch and smiled.
“In Alaska it’s still before midnight,” she told him. “If we celebrate the New Year according to the Alaskan Time, we can still have that kiss.”
A laugh escaped Rooster’s mouth and he felt warmth spreading out in his chest. This was why she liked her so much: for her ideas like this.
“Why haven’t I thought of that earlier?” he wondered.
“It only came to my mind just now as well,” Maggie admitted.
“It’s brilliant.”
“Thanks,” she said with a giggle. She even blushed, being happy that he liked this silly idea.
“Let’s hit the floor before the clock strikes again,” Rooster suggested, taking her hand.
“Wait,” Maggie said, then cupping his face with one hand, she gave him a long, passionate kiss.
“Hey, isn’t it too early for that?” Rooster asked, glancing at his watch. Not that he minded it - not at all! - but the Alaskan midnight was still pretty far away.
“Oh, no, this was just an ‘I’m so glad you’re here’ kiss,” she told him.
“In that case…” he said, pulling her closer to himself then he kissed her back fiercely, making her weak in the knees.
“Let me guess… you’re happy to see me, too,” she breathed when they broke apart. Her cheeks were red and her eyes were sparkling as he was still holding her in his arms.
“I am, but that’s actually some serpentine throws,” he told her, pulling the plastic-wrapped paper roll out of his jeans’ pocket. He had to admit, those kisses did make his stomach flutter, and he did want more, but they weren’t quite there yet.
Glancing at the serpentine, Maggie started laughing and she blushed even more.
“I meant the kiss!” she said, playfully smacking him on the chest. “I haven’t thought of that! At least not yet,” she added and they both laughed.
“Now let’s go,” he said, leaving the serpentine on a table then led her to the dance floor.

“We have less than a minute left!” Maggie announced, picking up the champagne glasses from the bar. She thanked Ramón, the bartender, for his service, then handed out the glasses to Rooster and Maverick.
“Alaskan time zone?” the older aviator raised a brow. “That’s smart.”
“Ten seconds!” Rooster said, looking at his watch, and they counted down together until one.
At midnight they clinked their glasses, then putting down his, Rooster slipped an arm around Maggie’s waist. She glanced up at him and smiled before his lips touched hers. He kissed her with so much passion that she had to hold onto him in order to stay on her feet. She couldn’t tell for how long they were in a liplock - it could be one minute or ten, but when they stopped, Maggie found themselves surrounded by the Dagger Squad, all smiling at them.
“Alaskan time?” Phoenix asked. “Clever.”
“What are you doing here?” Rooster wondered.
“Maverick said this party needed a little help,” Hangman replied.
“Plus the baby guns took over the jukebox,” Payback told them.
“Because you lost against them,” Coyote pointed out.
“They have a horrible taste,” Fanboy said.
“Even worse than your fashion sense,” Hangman added, throwing a glance at Rooster’s Hawaiian shirt.
“We didn’t want to get into a fistfight, so we decided to join you instead,” Bob said.
A smile touched Maggie’s lips. In the end, she did get to celebrate New Year’s Eve with her friends.
“Hey, Ramón,” she turned to the bartender. “Is there any more champagne left?”
