Mages who use regular magic are cool, but mages who use sky magic? Now that’s the good shit

Been spending a lot of my time playing Mages of Mystralia the past couple of days and I really like it! If you have like 20 bucks to spend and you like the classic 3D Zelda games I definitively recommend it.

The Best of MMXIX
Welcome to the my personal list of games I enjoyed this year. That’s right it’s my list, feel free to disagree with me but it won’t change anything. Anyway here are the rules;
1. These are games that I’ve played and reviewed this year. 2. There isn’t an order to this list, its not a top 10, these all feature because of how good they are. 3. The games don’t have to have been released this year.
Now lets get on with it!
Steamworld Heist
Tumblr media
Turn based tactical combat with steam powered bots... IN SPACE! This game had me coming back for seconds and thirds. My only gripe is that there isn’t more of it.
DOOM (2016)
Tumblr media
CLICK, CLICK BOOM! BOOM! Ah, this game was a real breath of fresh air for the Doom franchise and it was rather nice to be afforded the simple joy of mushing a demons face into the ground.
Spaceplan
Tumblr media
A clicker game that actually has a story and an actual end game? What madness is this? Well this is Spaceplan a clicker game about Space, Time and Potatoes.
Mages of Mystralia
Tumblr media
A hack and slash action RPG but with no hacking or slashing. But what makes this game truly interesting is the spell editing though. I never thought I’d be able to create a fireball that froze my enemy in place and then electrocuted them.
Prey (2017)
Tumblr media
This game that made me nostalgic for System Shock 2. Except I think this game might actually be a bit better. I actually just bought the Mooncrash DLC and I can’t wait to give that a go!
The Stanley Parable
Tumblr media
Calling this a walking simulator feels disingenuous, true you walk around in is but there is so much more to this than that. This is also one of the funniest games I’ve played, not just this year but ever.
Hand of Fate 2
Tumblr media
A game so good that I ended up backing the Kickstarter for the board game (which is also great). I keep going back and playing this trying to tidy up my runs and slowly playing through the various DLC.
Axiom Verge
Tumblr media
This game made me catch the metroidvania bug, I’ve bought so many because of my time playing through this. It’s actually great in its own right and extremely challenging (or I’m terrible one of the two).
Nier: Automata
Tumblr media
God damn... this game. No game should be this good, smooth combat, amazing soundtrack, overly convoluted storyline that even now I’m not 100% sure I understand fully. Play this game, then do it again and again and again. You’ll get something new every time.
The Hex
Tumblr media
From the creator of Pony Island, that alone should tell you something. This game spans multiple genres and yet keeps the same control scheme. All the while telling a pointed story about games design and development (among other things).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This year... has been strange, and not just in the world of video games, although that too has had its fair share of oddities. Loot boxes have FINALLY caught the attention of the mainstream and calling for the industry to get its shit together (especially after EA’s pitiful performance to the UK parliament).  Anyway lets not focus on that, the important this to see here is that lots of new and interesting games have appeared and the indie scene is more active than ever!

Selections from the Nintendo indie showcase ⊟
There were too many games shown today in Nintendo’s latest video release, because there are too many games on Switch and too many games on the way. So I picked a few that I’m interested in, for various reasons. Above, Double Kick Heroes, a kickdrum/metal rhythm action game I played at PAX South maybe two years ago? I love the combination of rhythm gameplay with a weird grungy road adventure.
youtube
AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected is out February 7. It’s a “feel-good FPS” designed by Aurelien Regard, creator of the very cool The Next Penelope and personal hero for his work as part of Arkedo Studio.
youtube
And here’s Mages of Mystralia, by Borealis Games. This has been out on other platforms for a while, a fact I know because I have it on PS4 and kind of didn’t have time to get into it as much as I wanted to. Oops.
Not because I didn’t want to play it, though -- this game has a cool feature in which you build your own magic spells by combining elements and effects. I really want to explore this system more! And I can on January 29. On Switch, I mean. Technically I could just play more right now.

Weekly Update 12/31/2022
Holy shit it’s literally been a month since I remembered to do this goddamn why am I the worst at this

Sometimes things happen in cutscenes that are really dumb. Like a lot of times, actually. Let me intervene please
youtube
Only under rare circumstances should you touch bats in the wild. It’s safer to just assume it’s best not to touch a bat, generally speaking

Wizard intelligence is rated on a different scale than normal intelligence, and also is real, unlike most concepts of normal intelligence. These are important things to remember

Game Reviews: The Shapeshifting Detective, Late Shift, Mages of Mystralia, Evoland 1&2
Tumblr media
The shapeshifting detective is a game thats more like a film or interactive tv show, as all the content was actually filmed not animated and basically you have to find a path through the game making decisions, these decisions shape your investigation, what will you uncover?
Tumblr media
Late Shift is pretty much the same style as the first however this is an old gem that sort of paved the way for the likes of The Shapeshifting Detective, do your decisions take you down the rabbit hole? where will you end up on your shift?
Tumblr media
Mages of Mystralia is a game about mages (duh) but there aren't many left, you a redheaded lass gains the abilities and go forth on a crusade to save the world, adjusting your spells and efects along the way to help you destroy enemies and solve puzzles.
Tumblr media
The Legendary edition of Evoland contains both Evoland 1 and 2, both games are similar in style, the first is much simpler in terms of story basically you start as pixels and each chest you get to upgrades your gameplay as though the game has ages years and uses new technology. The second game follows a timetravel storyline where going back and forth changes the graphics and playstyle, play along the likes of the original pokemon, building up to the likes of modern day 3rd person fighters.

Mages of Mystralia
Developer: Borealys Games Publisher: Borealys Games Rrp: £14.99 (Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam) Released: 18th May 2017 Available on:  Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam Played Using: Xbox 360 Control Pad Approximate game length: 14 Hours Magic is outlawed and those that practice it or have it develop within them are cast out to live in exile. Thus it has been for over century but lately dark forces have been rising in the lands of Mystralia and the only ones who can stop it are a band of renegade mages. You aren't one of them, not yet, at least. Mages of Mystralia is a hack and slash style RPG in the vein of Torchlight but with quite a few puzzle elements akin to Hob. However in this game you're a mage you don't hack or slash you use magic! You play as Zia a young girl born with magical powers in a land where they aren't allowed, what's worse you can't control them and at the start of the game you accidentally burn down your home and are exiled from your village.
Tumblr media
For the sake of transparency I shall mention that I backed the kickstarter for this game. So anyone who has played a game such as Diablo, Torchlight or Titan Quest will know the core part of this game is all about killing enemies, leveling up and attaining loot to enhance your already formidable powers. However that isn't the case in this game, yes you do kill enemies, lots of them in fact. But you don't gain experience from killing enemies or completing quests, there's also almost no loot to be gained. Occasionally you'll earn a wand that'll effect how your spells work but that's about it, at least as far as traditional loot is concerned. In this game the only loot you'll really care about are the runes you'll find (which we'll go into later). Runes and wands aren't the only things to be found in this game as you explore and break open pots and barrels etc you'll also find health replenishers, mana replenishers and soulbeads. Soulbeads are the currency of this world and are depicted as green orbs (There are purple ones around but they are far rarer and involve a lot more work than simply breaking open a pot). Now given what I said before you'd be forgiven for thinking that soulbeads are kinda’... pointless. But that isn't the case, soulbeads allow you to purchase a few items that will aid you in your quest, such as jewelled scarabs that revive at full health you should you die, which I can tell you is very useful in some of the boss battles you'll face.
Tumblr media
Of course what kind of hack and slash (because I can't think of better term that involves magic) would it be without side quests? That's right some of the other denizens of the realm will have requests to make of you each with its own reward, usually a purple soul gem or a wand. These additional quests encourage you to explore the world fully, and there is a lot to be found including some specially marked doors that involve solving a mini game puzzle to open. What makes this game more than a hack and slash adventure game that’s replaced the hacking and slashing with magic is your ability to edit your spells. Using the runes that were previously mentioned you can edit your four basic spells into something more powerful. For example the 'Ego' spell creates a shield that will defend Zia from attacks, however if you add the 'move' rune to it sudden the shield is gone but Zia can now dash. Add into that dash the 'impact' rune and suddenly Zia's dash triggers a second spell as she zips past her opponents. These edited spells can be incredibly powerful, having multiple triggers and effects. However this means that the spell expends more of your mana, sure your mana regenerates reasonably quickly but when you have a room full of enemies do you want to only be able to let off a single extremely powerful spell or many less powerful ones? Thankfully there is a quick menu you can access without pausing the game, allowing you to quickly swap out spells.
Tumblr media
There are three types of rune; behaviour, augment and trigger. Behaviour runes dictate how the rune acts, whether it moves, explodes etc. Augment applies effects such as firing left and right or how big the spell actually is. Lastly the trigger runes will cause the spell to do something at a specific point, for example the 'impact' trigger rune allows the spell to trigger a second spell (of your choosing) upon impact. The thing to remember is that  the order in which the runes are sequenced matters. It can make huge changes to the way a spell behaves. For example if the 'Left' augment rune is connected directly to a spell core then the spell will fire in a horizontal line to Zia's left, but if the 'Left' rune is connected to the 'Move' rune (which in turn is connected to the spells core) then the spell will ark to the left.
Tumblr media
I have to say I'm really glad I backed this one. I know these days people go on about how bad crowdfunding can be (especially in light of the Shenmue and Phoenix Point controversies) but I hold that crowdfunding is still very important and the only real way that many smaller developers can get funding for their projects.
Anyway I'll get off my soapbox. Give this game a look, if you enjoy hack and slash or just want something a bit different give it a go! If this appeals to you perhaps try; Hob Torchlight 1 & 2 The Diablo series
