June 4,2009 - Can’t believe it’s been 10 YEARS since I got here in USA 🇺🇸 and my accent is still there. 😂 But I mean I’m proud and loud of where I came from. In the past 10 years, I have adopted the American ways here, made my own American dream, but never forgotten who I was when I was still in the Philippines🇵🇭. I have learned to share this part of me to people I met as well as I appreciate and respect their culture too. Indeed, I love diversity! Being here is such an eye-opening experience to a lot of things and I am thankful that I can witness these. l am thankful for people who reminds me how much I’ve grown for those past 10years whenever I feel like I’m not making a progress, and ofcourse I never forget to look back to my family and friends in motherland. I feel like every immigrant definitely feels the same way as I am. It sucks leaving a country you grew up with. But thank God that I landed in the rightful place: I met new people who became my new friends and family, they have also helped to shape me for who I am now today. It was difficult in the beginning, but through God’s guidance I’ve made it through it all (and will keep going with God’s grace). Everyday is a blessing and I am being blessed by God to be a blessing to others which is the reason why I always do my best to help other people as well. I am not perfect and everyday is a learning experience. Growing up in the Philippines have taught me to keep my culture, values, and faith, and being in USA have helped me to grow stronger, become more independent, and work hard to reach my dreams. Anyways, if you made it here. Wow thanks for reading a part of me. I just feel like reflecting cause zamn.. It’s been 10YEARS and I still say I’M FOB! Hahaha! Normally I'm way more fluid when speaking professionally. 🏥 I had undergone 3 very invasive medical procedures 24-hours before this podcast was recorded. I did the show right after I came out of the hospital. My airway was held open for an hour during the procedure. I had a sore throat and lots of nasal pain from tubes, cameras and stuff. I was drinking lots of water to get the last of the anesthesia and surgery meds out of my system. It was a bit hard to focus and speak clearly due to all this. So I ended up saying all the little "filler" words you're taught not to say. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I had thought about rescheduling but I really wanted to get this episode out. 𝔽𝕚𝕝-𝔸𝕞 ℍ𝕚𝕤𝕥𝕠𝕣𝕪 𝕄𝕠𝕟𝕥𝕙 (PART II) ✧1521-1898 Spain colonized Philippines. ✧End of 1898 U.S. bought Philippines after Spanish-American war. ✧ Philippine-American war followed because of colonial resistance. ✧U.S. helped enforce common language throughout Philippines: Tagalog and English. ✧Philippines gained independence from U.S. after WWII. ✧Quarter of a million Filipinos served in WWII. To entice enlistment, soldiers were promised full Veterans benefits and full citizenship. Post-war, those promises did not come into full fruition for everyone. ------ Although I am Filipino in heritage and by ethnicity, my nationality and citizenship is American. I am a Filipino-American. I affirm this because that is not recognized everywhere. When I go to the Philippines, my relatives do not see me or label me as "American." The idea is that I do not "look American." While I did not take offense to that, seeing that there was a lack of understanding, it shed light to these questions: So what does an American look like? What does it look like to be American? What is the idea that they have in their minds, and why is that? Anyway, Philippine-American history month is celebrated, along with other POC such as Black History month (February) or Hispanic Heritage month (September) in order to affirm and bring light to the narratives and achievements of POC that go invisible in American history books.
