The Magnus Archives Doodles, MAG 161 - 164
SEASON 5 BABY!!! I’ve finally made it!!
I loved hearing all the old tapes in MAG 161 and 162, God it was also good to hear Sasha’s (and Tim’s) voices again, I missed her so much. There were also so many funny and cute conversations happening in all these episodes that I can’t seem to decide which one is my favourite. Also Helen’s here!! Since MAG 157 I’ve just been itching to draw her again, I’m so happy with her design and she’s so fun to draw <3

Martin is such a good foil to Jon in different ways throughout the whole show, but I'm particularly enjoying the way they contrast in these early episodes of s5
Specifically, the way Martin continues to be so... normal? In spite of everything.
For example, the way he insisted on bringing the maps and tea, and mocked what he anticipated Jon's flowery ominous response would be
Tumblr media
The way he just falls into saying things a normal person would say if the world was normal, even if it isn't exactly true, like in the intro to 163
Tumblr media
Also, the way he slipped so easily into a casual friendly banter with Helen in 164, which would not have sounded at all out of place at an office Christmas party pre-apocalypse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I know in the latter example he's probably being strategic -better to have allies than enemies and all that. And there's probably an element of his time with the lonely in the way he's interacted with everyone/thing this season so far... (which I'll probably have some thoughts on once I get a little further into the series)
But- I still think there’s an aspect here of Martin "Not big on change" Blackwood being this sort of living relic of the way the world once was. Subconsciously or consciously upholding the customs and patterns it once followed.
Meanwhile Jon serves an opposite purpose as the “post apocalyptic google” exposition machine.
He knows exactly how different this new world is, and doesn’t see a point in acting like it’s not.
and it just works so well especially in these first few episodes where Jon and Martin are our only real examples of how people not trapped in nightmares are coping with the world post change.
It's not only grounding for Jon as a character, but also for our journey though this world as a whole.

Okay that bit where Martin and John are just cursing like crazy as guns fire and bagpipes play in the background was kind of funny.

Based off of mag 163, my idea was is that the soldiers are from different periods with great loss and not all the same fighting one coherent enemy. I only then realised that a civil war soldier doesn’t necessarily belong in the uk’s Armageddon but forgive me it’s nightmare geography.

MAG 163, In the Trenches
When Jon starts to make his statement, and Martin (rightly) enforces a personal boundary that he cannot be a receptacle for Jon’s overflowing horror…
…at that moment, does Martin retreat into the Lonely? There’s nowhere to go except out into the battle, where Martin refuses to be; but it’s clear that Jon suddenly can’t (easily, conventionally) see him, and he tests that Martin is out of earshot by teasing him about tea and coffee. No response.
So it’s got to be the Lonely, right?
Regarding the statement itself: the cruelty and culpability of the rich man at the end prompts a hypothesis. Now that the supernatural aspects of the fear realms are the norm, maybe the point of the statements going forward will be to emphasize how they are metaphors for all-too-human folly and evil.
On my first listen I struggled a bit with the statements in season 5, often feeling impatient to return to the drama of the journey. I wonder if I’ll feel the same this time.

mag 163 - in the trenches
the season does so well with stakes and terror considering they're safe. the statements are so immersive
and here's the final one out of the trio of my favourite episodes. god do i love mag 163. not only have i listened to it so many times but it also just really sticks with me. i've thought about the heart and the wallet at least twice a month since i first heard this episode. i think it might've honestly impacted my own writing style. if anybody's read anything of mine, a pattern of pretty violent metaphors sprinkled through is pretty apparent, and the quite violent but apathetic language of so many slaughter statements really captivates me
beyond that, though, i feel like what really marks this episode out from all the other slaughter ones is that it straddles the line between strong emotion and fear, and the mundance perspective of violence we've seen so many times. for once, we get the so highly emotional and tragic point of view of the people actually falling victim to the violence (when we've usually gotten an outside perspective), but there are so many of them, their perspective changes sporadic and their names and stories so interchangable and common that they could be anyone in the end. it all ends up becoming a blur, almost anonymous, especially since the two sides remain unknown and, in the end, pretty much identical
and it's all really taken from jon, who's safe and doesn't have to worry about this. honestly, season five does such a good job at keeping up stakes and terror despite the fact that our two protagonists are pretty much untouchable throughout. it's pretty impressive
i think season five also does a pretty good job with jon and martin's communication skills. the level they're at is just right to make it interesting but not frustrating. and considering they're pretty much on completely different levels of power in this world, hearing them (especially martin, who's historically been somewhat of a pushover) setting boundaries. it's a work in progress throughout the season that never really gets resolved, but it's an interesting journey to follow along. and between it all we get banter and some fascinating world building about dream logic weaved in
just a great episode tbh
