Hi, I’m Nate, I’m a tech guy doing a digital nomad global round trip. I come from Israel, and some of my posts will speak of my home, family, friends and culture; I have learned over an extended period of travel that Here and Now are generally more interesting than There and Then, and if not more interesting, than certainly require some attention and effort to make them so.

I love StarTrek since my teens, and I’m looking forward to Picard season 3. I think it’s the best StarTrek series but to enjoy it a lot of preparation is required.

My time is usually spent between traveling, coding, journaling and photographing, I speak to my parents and sister quite often, and I am grateful for the internet and having enough sense to learn software and make money from working with it. I’ve been doing software development for over twenty years, from numerous perspectives, and I absolutely love it.

Covid changed everything. After the initial shock and the prolonged lock downs enforced in Israel, I chose to destress and I have been de stressing ever since.

The ingredients written to my recipe for a good destressing include sleep, a great shower, great food, social and friendly faces, easy access to weed and streamlined access to everything (laundry, acquiring toiletries, ATM) and of course, last but not least, wifi.

It took me a while to concoct this recipe and once I have and it’s clear I act like a good human and share it.

I’m sitting at a lovely restaurant called Bao Bao, in Maenam, on Koh Samui, Thailand. It is the ideal venue for digital nomads because it is spacious, can accommodate teams of ten around the same table (perfect for hackathon), has a really nice garden, and English (among other languages) speaking team.

My interest is fine dining allows me to enjoy the food. I get the chance to speak to Adrian, the owner, about logistics and coffee while his coffee machine is getting fixed. The menu is centered around Bao, a magical steamed bun with delicious, colorful and creative toppings. I have sampled all the menu, except the runny-egg breakfast Bao and the crab Bao.

The space is modern and airy, the garden is actually a plant nursery. There’s plenty of shade but then again, noon is humid. The design is very much to my liking, and the music is felt but not overbearing. You can have a good zoom meeting sitting at the back if you’re ear buds filter noises well. Mine are AirPods Pro which is the best thing that happened to me since I discovered Sannheiser Momentum (over-ear) seven years ago. I seldom walk around without my earbuds plugged in, and here I’m actually listening to someone else’s music and enjoying it. I wonder if it’s purely algorithmic or if someone took time to curate the playlists; they’re a mix of upbeat songs from across the ages, and across the generes.

Watermelon juice is a lot of work. I’m glad someone else is squeezing the melon for me.

I have to add a bit more text so I can squeeze in a photo of the garden. It’s not really feasible to hold a call or code there, but it’s lovely to take a break and smoke a joint. I think it looks better at night, but I’ll leave it for you to judge :-)
