Daily Wrap Up February 25-26, 2023
Under the cut:
Ukrainian troops are standing their ground around Bakhmut despite a significant concentration of Russian forces near the eastern town, a Ukrainian commander said Saturday.
For the first time since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago, a Saudi foreign minister has visited Ukraine. "Ukraine will receive real help from Saudi Arabia," the Ukrainian official said. "The Presidential Office signed two documents formalizing a $400 million aid package to Ukraine: $100 million in humanitarian aid and $300 million in oil products."
The delivery of 12 Mi-8 MTV-1 and two Mi-8 T helicopters from Croatia to Ukraine is underway, Croatian newspaper Jutarnji said it had learned, without citing its sources.
Poland’s largest oil company, PKN Orlen, has stopped receiving oil via the Druzhba pipeline from Russia, its chief executive officer, Daniel Obajtek, has said.
Explosions have reportedly been heard in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine, according to Petro Andriushchenko, an adviser to the exiled city’s mayor. The explosions were reported in the location of a large Russian military personnel cluster, he said.
“Ukrainian troops are standing their ground around Bakhmut despite a significant concentration of Russian forces near the eastern town, a Ukrainian commander said Saturday.
Cmdr. Yuriy Fedorovych Madyar, a colonel in Ukraine's military, published a video message on his Telegram channel about the state of the fighting around Bakhmut, which remains one of the most fiercely contested territories in the war.
"Ukrainian troops have retained their positions on all three suburbs of Bakhmut — the northern, eastern and southern-southwestern. The enemy had no territorial successes," Madyar said. "Enemy assault operations were unsuccessful." The colonel said Ukrainian forces "don't see any additional accumulation" of Russian troops in these areas. Still, the concentration of Russian forces in Bakhmut is "already considerable," allowing the Russians "to launch assault operations several times a day."
Madyar said the situation in the southern suburbs of Bakhut is stable, and that it's the northern suburbs that are proving "the most difficult part of the front lines to hold on to."
"There is a large number of enemy troops and high intensity of enemy assault operations," Madyar said, describing the situation in the northern suburbs. "Appropriate forces were sent there to prevent the enemy from implementing its plan to surround the city and its outskirts."   Madyar said that over the past week, the number of remaining civilians seen in the streets of Bakhmut "has fallen to zero."
What Russia is saying: Russia state news agency RIA Novosti carried a report this week showing a Russian soldier walking through the outskirts of Bakhmut, saying that Ukrainian forces have been holding on to their lines but retreating "occasionally."
And the Russian private military company Wagner has claimed that it now controls the village of Yahidne. The village is in the northern suburbs of Bakhmut — the same area that Madyar, the Ukrainian colonel, said was proving the most difficult to hold.
CNN has not been able to independently verify either side's claims on recent troop movements around Bakhmut.”-via CNN

“For the first time since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago, a Saudi foreign minister has visited Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky's office released a video of him meeting Saudi Arabia's Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Sunday.
Zelensky said he expected the meeting would "provide a new impetus to further intensification of our mutually beneficial dialogue."
"Thank you for supporting peace in Ukraine, our sovereignty, and territorial integrity," he continued. "This is very important for us and our society."
Saudi Arabia has steered a neutral course in the conflict. The Kingdom mediated a prisoner exchange last year, in which two American and five British citizens were released from Russian detention.
Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, called the meeting successful in a message on Telegram.
"Ukraine will receive real help from Saudi Arabia," the Ukrainian official said. "The Presidential Office signed two documents formalizing a $400 million aid package to Ukraine: $100 million in humanitarian aid and $300 million in oil products."
"Ukraine and Saudi Arabia have common challenges and experiences in dealing with them. We are talking about Iranian UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones) that were supplied to certain 'rebels' and attacked Saudi oil facilities," Yermak said, in a reference to the use of Iranian drones by Houthi forces in Yemen.
"Since last year, the same Iranian UAVs have been in possession of Russian terrorists and have been attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure."”-via CNN

“The delivery of 12 Mi-8 MTV-1 and two Mi-8 T helicopters from Croatia to Ukraine is underway, Croatian newspaper Jutarnji said it had learned, without citing its sources.
As the Croatian government keeps all information on military aid confidential, the news outlet said obtaining official confirmation of the delivery was impossible.
Reports that Croatia's Defense Ministry would donate some of its Soviet-made Mi-8 helicopters to Ukraine emerged last year in November.
According to the outlet's sources, however, the helicopters are currently being disassembled and prepared for delivery and will be ready for transport in about ten days.
While Croatia's Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic has publicly voiced support for Ukraine, the country's president, Zoran Milanovic has repeatedly spoken out against providing military support to Ukraine as it defends against full-scale Russian invasion.
Jutarnji reported that Milanovic was angered by the announcement that Croatia would deliver helicopters to Ukraine last November, saying at the time that Croatia's Defense Ministry did not inform him how these helicopters would be replaced.
On Jan. 30, Milanovic criticized the West's decision to send tanks to Ukraine and said that the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula would "never again be part of Ukraine," prompting a response from Ukrainian officials.”-via Kyiv Independent

“Poland’s largest oil company, PKN Orlen, has stopped receiving oil via the Druzhba pipeline from Russia, its chief executive officer, Daniel Obajtek, has said.
Posting to Twitter, Obajtek said:
We’re effectively securing supplies. Russia has halted supplies to Poland, for which we are prepared.
Orlen said it could fully supply its refineries via sea and that consumers would not be affected by the halt.
The Druzhba pipeline, which supplies oil to Poland and Germany, as well as to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, was exempted from EU sanctions to help countries with limited options for alternative deliveries.
Russian oil accounts for about 10% of Polish supply after Warsaw cut imports after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.”-via The Guardian

“Explosions have reportedly been heard in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine, according to Petro Andriushchenko, an adviser to the exiled city’s mayor.
The explosions were reported in the location of a large Russian military personnel cluster, he said.
Andriushchenko, posting on Telegram, wrote:
The sounds of explosions along the line of Yalta village / Yuryivka village (location of a large concentration of occupiers) in Mariupol district are reported. We verify the reports. Air raid alert was announced in Ukraine, but occupiers are struck.
“It’s a good trend,” he added.
Ukraine’s armed forces have in recent days claimed strikes on Mariupol, previously thought to be outside the effective range of Ukrainian missiles, Kyiv Post has reported.
Nataliya Humeniuk, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s armed forces, on Thursay said:
At this stage, we can only state that inaccessibility is a very relative concept. What is considered so remote that it is unreachable, is not always so. The direction of Mariupol is no longer completely unreachable for us.”-via The Guardian

Forty-year-old actress and director Polina Menshikh was killed in a Ukrainian missile strike during a live performance for Russian troops in Ukraine’s occupied Donetsk region. The soldiers had gathered to celebrate Missile Forces and Artillery Day, drawing comparisons to Russia’s recent deadly attack on Ukrainian soldiers during an Artillery Day award ceremony. Members of the Ukrainian army have unofficially dubbed the attack a “retaliatory strike.”
Russian actress Polina Menshikh’s death was first reported on November 20 by the St. Petersburg Portal theater, where she’d previously directed a musical. The next day, Russian state news agency TASS said that Menshikh had been killed by shelling in the village of Kumachovo in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (“DNR”), about 70 kilometers (around 50 miles) southeast of the city of Donetsk.
“DNR” authorities reported that the village had come under fire on November 19, adding that a woman born in 1972 had died. Andrey Rudenko, a war correspondent for the Russian state-owned broadcaster VGTRK, said the attack was a Ukrainian HIMARS strike.
Polina Menshikh was an actress and director. For 15 years, she led the Lege Artis theater in Moscow, which she founded. Menshikh said she taught classical ballet, character dance, Irish dance, acting, Russian folk dance, contemporary dance, Baroque dance, and ballet conditioning. She directed plays at the Central House of Journalists, the Presnya arts theater, and the Moscow International House of Music. In recent years, she headed the Nezhen folk-dance theater.
On November 21, pro-war Telegram channels began publishing details of Menshikh’s death, saying she’d been performing at a concert for Russian soldiers in a cultural center just 60 kilometers (around 37 miles) from the front line during the artillery strike. A video circulating on social media allegedly shows the moment during Menshikh’s performance when the building was hit.
Russian pro-war blogger Alexander Kots speculated that the strike on the cultural center was coordinated. “The enemy has hundreds of people on the Internet engaging in OSINT and dozens of pairs of eyes, ready to give a tip-off for 200–500 hryvnias (about $5-14). This is a fact. And it can’t be ignored,” he wrote.
Rybar, a pro-Kremlin military analysis channel on Telegram, called the concert for the soldiers “the stupidest decision to gather a huge crowd in a conspicuous place.” “Apparently, very smart people had a think and decided that since the concert venue is located 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) from the front line near the Russian border, it would definitely be out of reach,” Rybar wrote.
Pro-war Telegram channel Military Informant compared the incident to a strike on Ukrainian soldiers in the Zaporizhzhia region who were in formation for an award ceremony. “Remember how funny it was when the AFU’s 128th Brigade was ordered to line up in honor of Artillery Day […] for an award ceremony, and then our missiles came? Well, exactly the same alternatively gifted people were found in the Russian army,” wrote Military Informant.
The day after the strike, RIA Novosti published a video from the cultural center where Menshikh was performing. According to RIA’s correspondent, the auditorium was “practically undamaged,” but the roof above the stage was destroyed and the walls were covered in shrapnel.
Ukrainian Armed Forces are unofficially referring to the strike on Kumachovo as “retribution” for the shelling of Ukraine’s 128th Mountain Assault Brigade, wrote Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Madyar’s Birds aerial reconnaissance unit. According to him, soldiers from Russia’s 810th Marine Brigade were in the cultural center. Brovdi claimed 25 people died in the strike and over 100 were injured.
Later, the Ukrainian military's Strategic Communications Center issued a statement saying that Ukrainian forces “successfully inflicted fire damage” on 810th Marine Brigade members who had gathered to celebrate Russia’s Missile Forces and Artillery Day. “The Ukrainian defense forces promptly identified the location of the Russians’ celebratory event and warmly welcomed them. Russian propagandists claim that the precision strike killed several dozen occupiers simultaneously, with about 100 suffering severe injuries,” read the announcement.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not officially commented on the strike, and there is no precise information on the number of deaths. A Russian military expert, who spoke with Novaya Gazeta Europe on condition of anonymity, claims that 23 people died and up to 80 were injured in the strike. According to him, four “visiting artists” were among the dead. There is no confirmation of these data.

Affordable Villas in Lebanon, Overlooking Damour Seaside
Tumblr media
Some of the tips before buying the Villas in Lebanon are,
Collect the Information
The first step in buying Villas is to collect all possible information about the project that has to be bought. Making a list of all the projects by your needs is very important. The requirements like lifestyle, and most importantly, the affordability should be checked. There are many builders and much information available, which makes it overwhelming for the customer.
Location
One of the most critical decisions that have to be taken while purchasing Villas in Lebanon is its location. Primarily, you should look for a place that is well-connected with everything and has the potential for future growth too. Mostly the villa projects are outside the city, but it is alright if it’s not inside the city because once the area develops and the project comes up, the vicinity also develops.
Amenities
The amenities of the villa should be checked to ensure if the villa has all the basic amenities which are in the bucket list of the buyer to make his stay a happy one with his family. It is always better to look out for all the amenities that are desired in a villa. If you have kids, then the lookout should be for a proper place of playing area with amenities like a swimming pool and other sports facilities should be available.
Budget
The fact of money can never be denied. Because money is the most important factor while choosing Villas for buying. When the actual cost of the total property is calculated, don’t forget to include all the extra costs that will add up. This includes the cost of interiors and the furniture and other important amenities of the villa. So, while investing, we should think wisely and make sure to look for loan options before opting for the project.

“TREASURED GIFT FOR SOVIET LEADER
Everyone who is interested in Arabian horses surely has heard about the grey Arabian stallion Aswan that was presented to the Soviet Union by Egyptian authorities as a thanksgiving for help in construction of the famous Aswan Dam. Huge number of descendants of the expensive gift became a base for breeding work in the Soviet Union, and the result was a stock of Russian Arabian horses that are appreciated all over the world.
But this story began two years before the start of a grandiose project on the Nile. In 1958 at the State Stud of Egypt "El Zagra" an Arabian foal was born from Nazir out of Yusriya: he was named Rafaat. He was a result of inbreeding the famous sire Mansur; Nazir was one of his best sons and had a great success in races, and Yusriya was Mansur's granddaughter.
In 1960 the construction of the huge dam started, and the dam was aimed to protect Egypt from floods and droughts, to provide the country with electricity and create a large irrigative system for agricultural industry. The project was developed in the USSR and was realized under administration and with help of thousands of Soviet specialists. That was a huge and difficult construction, and there was a necessity to move some archeological landmarks of Ancient Egypt to save them from sinking.
In 1964 the Soviet leader of that time Nikita Sergheevich Khrushchev attended the building site of the hydrostation, and President of Egypt Naser gave his Soviet colleague a traditional Oriental gift, the Arabian stallion Raafat of 6 years old. The horse went to the USSR and changed the name; afterwards he was named after Aswan, the city near the great hydrotechnical facility. In 1965 the stallion was brought to the Stud of Tersk and officially entered the state stud book under his new name. The new sire became a sensation for the stud farm, he was a true representative of Saqlawi type with a beautiful head and vivid, lively temperament. These features made him very remarkable among all the sires used of that time. He also was rather tall, his measurements were 155 - 178 - 19, he had a harmonic conformation, he was bright and gracious and possessed incredibly perfect forms.
Riding on Aswan was perfectly described in V.Kh. Khotov's memoirs: "Aswan's walk was mild, beautiful and flat. It was easy to ride him, he was brave, good-natured and unusually trustful to human as a good family horse. Aswan walked under saddle without jumping aside in a faultless, springy, long, smooth and loose walk underlining his nobleness and gracefulness. In fact you should saddle an Arabian horse to be able to appreciate him. Aswan was a classic example of it. Looking after movement change with changing a gait, I can note that Aswan had rather lively trot, more accurate, smooth, natural gait. While changing trot to canter, especially starting to gallop, he subtly, undetectably and smoothly moved his strong and thin legs notwithstanding the fact that trot is not a gait that saddle racing horses prefer. Cantering, Aswan also showed a good speed, stamina and no signs of fatigue and sweating, revealing a good indefatigability. The best pleasure on horseback I felt when Aswan started a short gallop".
Breed type and wide combinability in breeding to mares that were discovered in first years of stallion's stud use stimulated extensive use him as a sire. As a result more than 250 foals were born.
Aswan was commonly bred to Priboy's, Araks's and Pomeranets's daughters. Due to careful mare selection the staff of the Tersk stud managed to produce foals with orient nobleness, breed style, harmonic conformation and high performance at the same time.
More than a half of Aswan's descendants were used at the stud. Between his first foals Aswan sired two outstanding colts from Priboy's daughters, they were Start (out of Sopka) and Patron (out of Podruga). Start raced almost without any defeat, he also won Derby. Patron gave him a little way in joint races but always won when Start was absent. When Start's racing career was over, he sired in the Stud named after Budyonny mated with warmblood mares but soon died. Patron was sold abroad, became a three time champion of Denmark and sired Padron the champion (out of Odessa of British origin), an outstanding stallion of a perfect breed type and excellent movements.
Aswan's descendants won Derby for 4 times, the Great Summer Prize (2000 Guineas) and the Prize named after S.M. Budyonny (St. Ledger) for 6 times both. Aswan sired not only speedy, but also beautiful foals more than in one generation.
Aswan's hereditary features, such as breed type, magnificent head and neck, elegancy and beauty, revealed in the third generation also. The example of that are such world-famous horses as:
- Balaton, ch. (1982, from Menes out of Panagiya, Aswan's daughter), one of the benchmark stallions in the world (diseased in 2005). - Pesnyar, b. (1982, from Nabeg out of Pesnya, Aswan's daughter), sold to the USA at the auction for 1 million dollars, an unheard sum for an Arabian horse for that time. - Mukomol, ch. (1979, from Kumir out of Malinka, Aswan's daughter), one of the leading sires of the breed. - Pesenka, gr. (1972, from Salon out of Panorama, Aswan's daughter), USA champion, foaled an elite offspring. - Vympel, br. (1983, from Menes out of Molva, Aswan's daughter), a sire. - Aspirant, gr. (1981, from Naslednik out Panagiya, Aswan's daughter), a sire. - Mastak, gr. (1977, from Topol' out of Malinka, Aswan's daughter), a sire. - Madyar, gr. (1994, from Droog out of Martinika, Aswan's daughter), showed and outstanding performance ability in Russia and abroad, the successor of Korey's line. - Abdullah, gr. (from Patron, Aswan's son, out of Psikhea), Aswan's grandson sold for 3 millions 200 thousands dollars. - and others.
Aswan lived till he was 26 years old and diseased in 1984 in the Tersk Stud.” -  Native Russian Breeds & Horses
