in return, my own mafutoya hcs/fic ideas/just general spouting:

composer buddies. i will die on this hill. theyre an online duo like 25ji and they make music together and their groups have NO idea (bonus points if someone(s) from their group also follow them). i will die on this hill. its hilarious.

on that note, mafuyu taught toya a bit of how to compose— i would imagine she helped him refine how to put emotions into song (since she did that quite well as we know)

^ also, they’re study buddies. def both practice their english on one another, but since madus an honors kids and toyas just Smart they work well together. mafu also helps come up with ways to help toya tutor akian bc she already does that with rando classmates

more canon divergencey, but their parents know each other (not in the same fashion as the aoyagi-tenma friendship…. asahinas more just keeping up terms to look good bc. aoyagis.) so the kids knew each other. they weren’t super close but they’d recognize one another

mafuyu running away at the end of mafu4 definitely gave toya food for thought on his own running away (that he would come back to tackle in toya4 sorry bud)

toyas the extroverted of the two technically. sure, mafu’s mask is even more extroverted, but generally toyas the upbeat one between them.

they like to just take the train around tokyo for the sights. they did it less as toya prepared for rad blast, but mafuyu def took him on a celebratory train ride at some point in congrats

mafuyu does not like most of vbs’ music (since akian wrote the music until roughly toya3, and even then i think they still did the brunt). mafuyu does like toya’s songs, tho

^ followup, toya follows 25ji. hes 50/50 most of the time (partially tastes partially instruments sometimes) but he supports them by leaving ridiculously long comments breaking everything down. hes become a well-known member of the 25ji fandom, accidentally.

more serious hc: toya does not, in any shape or form, “save” mafu. if they knew each other earlier, however, he definitely kept her from going over the edge. i can talk a LOT about this but thats a whole other rabbit trail.

mafuyu gets plushies from toya from the arcade. its usually rabbits, although the occasional cat or bird makes its way into the pile. there is an ever-growing pile of fluff in the corner of mafu’s room at kana’s. honami does Not Know what to do with it.

if they had a sekai together, it would be mafuyu’s fragment sekai but with like. the equivalent of a starbucks stuck in it. like the starbucks at a target or barnes&noble or whatever. mikuluka are their only vs, although they might get a len or kaito later on.

toya goes to miya to pick up kohane when an cant, but honestly goes to talk to mafu mostly. i mean hes there for kohane but sometimes koha has committee and so toya will just,,, talk with mafuyu. the rest of the school is VERY confused as to why this random kamikou guy is talking with asahina mafuyu, and then saki barrels him over one day screaming “OTOUTO!!!” at the top of her lungs and theyre like “oh hes a tenma okay”

this goes without saying but mafu doesnt mask around toya. she did for a bit, but toya saw through it bc it was annoyingly similar to akito’s own. toya Does Not like the mask. in any situation. he willingly chooses to extrovert most of the time than let mafu mask. its partially for his own sanity.

mafu teaches him to cook, and toya reteaches her tastes (partially stolen from that one akitoyamafu fic on ao3 love you)

mizuki constantly tells stories about them to the other, and they always listen with rapt attention. mizu thinks its cute in a way, and is also happy to have their full attention for once (not like toya wouldnt but)

toyamafu have no fashion sense. they just kinda throw something together thats vaguely coherent. akito was forced to band with mizuki to get them to actually match their clothes right.

mafuyu is more athletic than toya (not a high bar tbh) but toyas much more limber and flexible

Demons!! Whoa

As always, lore utc ~

So. Ancient Greece. Dark Ages. There is this homeless orphan. Gets kidnapped and put into slave trade. None other than Sika Madu buys this kid up as they're 'special' in some way (hint: it's the blue eyes :) ). This kid hasn't known anything besides violence and cruelty, so they act out and disregard any act of kidness Sika Madu shows them. They frequently disobey him which leads to them finding out about the whole reviving angel Mikaela thing. Dies thanks to humonculus Yuu going beserk and gets turned into a vampire as a 3rd progenitor. Learns a bit more about the whole thing from Urd and Rigr and decides that this whole thing ain't fot them and they make a run for it, vowing revenge against Sika Madu somehow.

Fast forward to the middle ages. The noble Bathory family has their third child and first daughter, about two years after their second son, Ferid. Ferid does his thing and kills his parents, without the knowledge of his siblings. When Ferid is 16 and his sister around 13 or 14 he kills their older brother thanks to his new goal of stopping reincarnation (how that's supposed to help is beyond anyone atp). As he returns to his home, bloodied with his brother nowhere to be seen and said brothers sword in hand, his sister obviously freaks out and makes a run for it, piecing the incidents of her parents untimely deaths and this situation together. Throughout the chase through their home, Ferid, at first ,only gets to cut off a piece of his sister's hair. After a bit, he corners her and stabs her to near death. He drags her bleeding body all the way to a nearby forest, so she can die and become one with the plants she loved oh so much. He leaves to set off his convoluted plan(s) for the future while his sister's body rots away.

Little did he know, a certain rogue vampire that was nearby that exact day, stumbled across the girls dying body. The girl had miraculously clung onto life.

The vampire made an offer:

"Wanna keep living?"

"...y...yeah..."

"Well, I can make that happen but you gotta be my friend forever!"

The girl barely had any strength left to live, let alone speak another word. She could only weakly gaze up at her savior's small frame with pure desperation in her green eyes.

"I'll take that as a yes. And if no, I can just kill you right away!"

A few minutes later, the girl had woken up once again, an all consuming thrist for blood already plaguing her. The vampire handed her a bottle of red liquid which she downed in a few seconds.

"Well, Filum's the name! Nice to properly meet you my new friend!"

"...thank you for saving my life, Filum. I'm...", the girl trailed off. Was her name really worth keeping? The one her monster of a brother would gleefully call out while dragging her dying body around? No. "... I'm Liz."

"That's not your real name, is it?"

"It is now."

"Alright then Liz, lemme introduce you to your new life as a vampire and my forever friend!"

Liz would spend the next few years catching up with knowledge she was not permitted to access earlier and enganging in general shenanigans with Filum.

She had a dying desire, which stuck with her even as a vampire: to figure out the reason for her brothers actions and to stop him. But simply going to kill him on sight wasn't the style of a cunning Bathory. She knew he had something planned and by the time she got around to realising her goal, Ferid was a vampire himself. So she hatched her own big plan: Take Ferid down at his highest, when his plans are just about to scceed, just like how he destroyed everything just when things started to look up for their family.

Buncha stuff happens but uhhhh muh brain broken lmao

A long, long time later Liz decides that in order for her plans to work (and being aware of the nature of Ferids plan), she has to become a demon. Filum, bored out of their mind, decides that they should also become a demon and find a fitting vessel to one day take down Sika Madu (now Shikama Doji). They both use a technique to retain their memories as demons (like the one Mahiru used iirc) and possess their current weapons as vessels. Filum makes their own weird little contraption for strings while Liz picks a gun (she claims they're an efficient weapon but also she just thinks they're neat).

Honestly, the thing I’m saltiest about in Tales of Arcadia is how they handled the redeemed villains. Angor Rot? Dead. Strickler? Dead. Nomura? Dead. Tronos Madu? Dead. Literally every redeemed villain doesn’t get a happy ending. It’s especially egregious when it comes to Angor Rot and Tronos, who were redeemed for all of five seconds before getting killed. Like, why even bother going through the trouble of giving that development if they’re going to die anyway? Redemption Equals Death is an incredibly stupid trope, and I really hate how liberally Tales of Arcadia uses it.

The trope does have purpose to serve, but it does depend on the characters. Cause sometimes that finality is the only way, and there is peace in moving on. One of the best examples can technically be Darth Vader, though that can be up for debate on his redemption. I wouldn't say he's fully redeemed, but has a redeeming death, saving his child over his dark service, felt like a good end for him.

So, the trope of Redemption Equals Death, it does have it's purpose and use, it just comes down to the character it will be applying to and their situations and set up. But the big issue with ToA is that they overused it. I would've top that trope at 2 characters max cause not every character will apply to that trope.

Like, I don't see the point of killing Strickler, narrative wise it didn't feel fitting. To me, it always felt that he was set up for a redemption and a happy ending.

Before he revealed himself a villain, you got to see that he loved teaching, and he worked off Jim well and on some level did still care for him. Like, you can also see the alarm/horror in his expression when he saw that Jim was the new Trollhunter and that Jim his student was now his enemy.

And even afterwards, able to accept that Jim IS his enemy, for a trained assassin who can easily kill this kid who just started out and would get stronger as he performed more, he didn't go out of his way to kill Jim, he first wanted to try and just steal the Amulet without causing Jim's death. I could be wrong, but, as antagonistic as he got, I felt he did always care for Jim on some level and was reluctant to see him dead, especially the first half of s1.

Also he did come to really care for Barbara (though it didn't stop his villainy, I feel those smacks in s3 should've happened in s2 but I guess they didn't want to explore Barbara in the know which is a weak choice to me). But, with her, his love of teaching, and his soft spot for Jim, Strickler was always set up for a redemption and a future ally and mentor. And with this, I always felt that Strickler's end was going to be him and Barbara marrying and he'd be Jim's stepfather, which would've led to more of their fun dynamic, where they do care but also can't help but be a little antagonistic and that it would improve as the years went on. Death didn't feel like a fitting end for him.

Angor Rot though I did see as a potential redeemed character and still fated for death and finding peace through it. This is a troll that had his soul taken from him, got forced into servitude to a human mage commanding him to hunt down his own people who were fighting his enemies, and through the years became hollow, bitter, and ruthless. Also, mindful the show is kinda up in the air about troll life expectancy, but there could be in the realm of possibility that Angor is also much longer lived than he should be given that he is tie to that ring. He's a villain that got put into a situation outside of his control, and he's forced into a service he didn't want to be in. By set up, that leaves him open for a redemption, and the possibility that death could finally bring him some peace, give him true freedom. Which I'm sure was the idea for s3 but I also had different ideas of what s3 was going to go, and it was so weird seeing Angor think highly of Morgana like, didn't you hate her?

Did, did you get some amnesia with your revival? Or was there some brainwashing with your revival? What's going on there, buddy?

Anyway, when s2 ended, I predicted that we were going to see a Claire and Angor dynamic explored, cause for Trollhunters, the first 2 seasons was really good about giving us different dynamics that actually came out to be a lot of fun to watch. Like Jim and Strickler and their antagonistic rivalry + Strickler falling for Jim's mom. And we got Claire and NotEnrique that was a lot of fun. And then we got Steve and Eli and gosh those two were hilarious.

So at the end of s2, I was anticipating that Claire was going to be trapped in Morgana's service with the revived Angor Rot and that they were going to be forced to work together and do as Morgana wills, and it was going to be intense and fascinating as Claire, next to Jim, had the biggest clash with Angor; she even thought that Jim should have kept that ring and wore it and forced Angor to work for him. And then lo and behold, she's now in a forced servitude and is working with a hostile and bitter Angor and what starts out as hostility becomes them becoming reluctant frienemies cause they're enemies stuck together serving something more dangerous than them and holds all the strings and the enemy of my enemy is my friend and those scenarios are always so fun to watch. And once free of Morgana, because he hates her far more than he hates Jim and co, he helps in that fight, and would pass on more at peace in contrast to his first end.

So, that's what I would've expected and that's what would've been my ideals on the paths for redeemed characters. Not every redeemed character needs to live on happily cause sometimes, there is that peace in death and moving on. But not every redeemed character should die either. And this series just took it waaaay to far, to a point it feels more for angst and shock value than something fitting to the character and story. But I also felt that s3 of Trollhunters was the start of this series starting to go downhill and made weird choices that clashed with what was initially set up so I'm not too surprised.

Lithuania: Lightning of all colours scorched his ivory skin and long black hair, and the undercurrents dragged his limbs down the water. Jūratė was an asocial introvert, and she really didn’t like the smugglers who took all her amber and killed her fish. At first, she wanted to punish the stranger, but seeing his exhausted bloodless face, her heart was filled with pity, so she brought him to her Amber castle for interrogation.

India: I never liked that wicked daayan.

Lithuania: Well, mom wasn't that evil. After having a hearty lunch in a house made of sun, both made by a beautiful woman with golden hair and sapphire eyes, dad said he immediately fell in love with her. This made her laugh a lot, so she decided not to tell him that she almost killed him and the storm was her doing, and she put all the blame on the Thunder God.

Lithuania: However, when mom asked what his name was, he said something so difficult to pronounce that she asked: "Kas ir ta tauta?" - which means "What is your nation?" Dad didn't know any Baltic language back then, so he thought "kastaut" was some sort of friendly greeting. This word, eventually, became his new nickname. Nowadays, however, its form is Kastytis.

Latvia: Estonia called him Aesti, btw.

Lithuania: The moral of the story is that serious misunderstandings can not only destroy human relationships but also create them! :D

Aah sorry I’m so late this month! I really appreciate the way this chapter explained things to us super clearly. And I was pretty spot on about how Mika and Yuu are basically the same soul. They both come from the original Yuu orb but one is Mikaela incarnated in new bodies known as our Yuichiro, and the other entered og Mikaela’s vessel. I guess it makes sense that the Yuu orb is an independent soul since it created Mikaela who is also an independent soul. Would that make our Yuu and Mika the only ppl on Earth whose souls weren’t directly made by God? And where is the Yu orb currently? Is The First still using it in his plans? Could our Mika connect back to it? Is the power of the orb why only Mika or humanity can be resurrected? Why hasn’t God gotten rid of the damn orb of darkness?!?

Side note: It’s so funny that Yuu is having an existential crisis and Mika is just like “Obviously the two of us are gonna runaway and be together 🙄 duh.” But it’s also kinda heart wrenching bc Yuu realizes that Mika is changing and I have no idea how they’re gonna deal with that.

Are they the same soul though? I didn't see it that way. They're two separate beings who have basically just swapped identities. Their souls are tied together, yes, and there's definitely some element of the Yuu orb being the one allowing at lest Mika to reincarnate. Not sure that makes them the same soul. But really, I think it leads into your later questions. Where is the Yuu orb now? Because if it's still living as a separate entity somewhere out there, I guess this wouldn't make our Mika that Yuu exactly.... but that Yuu wasn't an angel or anything like that, so how did it become human? Same way the angels did in that it just put its soul in a human body? How would Sika Madu react to that happening? Also, you point out something really interesting because yeah. I think you're right in that these two are the only ones who weren't created by God. They're both Sika Madu's creations. Huh. Lastly, you're so right. Why did God not obliterate the Yuu orb? Did God and the enforcers just not know about it? Wild.

I'm also curious about Guren and Ferid's memory search. Do they know the truth about the past? And yeah, it's sad to think about. Yuu really has just been a pawn this entire time. Then again, a ton of people in the story have. But yeah. It's a bit different here.

However, there's something I wanna point out timeline-wise about all this. Unless I'm remembering wrong, Yuu and Mika were snatched up pretty much immediately after the catastrophe happened. At the time of the catastrophe, Guren knew nothing. He was just a pawn. Krul is the one who snatched up all the kids, and the one who talked to Krul and brought her in on all the plans going on was Mahiru. Unless the timeline is being sorta retconned (entirely possible), there's no way Guren could have planned for Yuu and Mika to be in the vampire city. It'd have to be Krul and Mahiru's doing. This can still work sense since all four of them (I'm including Ferid) are working together. It would just mean that Guren wasn't involved all that much in these early plans. HOWEVER! At this point, we have no idea when those two sides joined up (Guren and Ferid vs Mahiru and Krul) and Resurrection at 19 would sorta indicate that that alliance seemingly hadn't yet fully formed since Guren's really only talked to Ferid about things.... so. Yeah, really this scene confused me a bit. I'm thinking there are minor retcons afoot, but I guess we'll see ANYWAYS this is all to say that I'm not trying to be a big "Guren did nothing wrong" voice. He's done a lot wrong, but with what we currently know of the timeline, Yuu and Mika being in the underground is probably one of the few things he isn't responsible for and is just taking advantage of instead.

It's an interesting little dilemma isn't it. It kinda feels like Yuu learning the truth about everything made him more serious on the surface, at least for a little bit. Prior to them jumping into their memories, Yuu was so "idk what we're gonna do but we'll figure it out no problem!!" and he's still like that, but his whole "if we die we're dead even if we're reincarnated" thing just felt so much more serious. The thing with his feelings about Mika changing goes along with this too. I wonder if it's something that'll persist. I kinda doubt it since Yuu's whole thing is being carefree on the surface, but I guess we'll see. Side note: They don't know how they're going to fix things any more than we do LOL

OnS Chapter 122

Hmm... I’m still feeling weird but I’m starting to watch anime again. I was thinking of reading this the same time as the chapter that’s coming after this but eh... separately is better.

Mika enters Yuu’s memories and finds himself in Ancient Greece. He and Yuu meet up and realized they’re both in their younger forms. Mika thinks it’s cause being child-sized uses less energy as well as Yuu himself has an innate desire to be back in his childhood when everyone else was still alive.

Yuu says he remembers nothing of Ancient Greece and asked Mika if his age is making him senile and Mika’s reply is basically “Yeah, you’re usually this dumb.” lol

The two hide when the First Progenitor and the others walked by. They wonder if they’ve been spotted and in the middle of that, Yuu says he thinks that since Mika is now his demon, their memories are mixed together and this isn’t solely his.

(The other progenitors look like their demon selves which doesn’t make sense timeline wise but There’s probably gonna be an explanation. I sadly can’t take their pictures together properly)

Mika is worried they’ve been found out as the last time he travelled back to Yuu’s memories, he’d been caught. He noticed though that Shika Madu seem pretty weak at the moment and wonders why. What they didn’t know is that elsewhere, the First Progenitor is being drugged to weaken him.

While he’s in that state, Rigr decides to finally go inside the First’s memories.

The two are trying to figure out their current situation and finds out that while the people in the memory world can’t see them, they’re all solid and not just holograms (and I mean that both ways). This meant they could both still get injured and so it’s better if they steer clear of Shika Madu for their own safety.

Mika and Yuu decide to just head the opposite direction from where the First is going. Yuu remembers Shika madu’s mansion and the real Mika in the casket and the two head there to see.

Yuu describes the Mika in the casket as a "prettier version of Mika”. While he doesn’t remember the details, he does remember that he used to come there all the time to talk to the Mika in the casket. This frustrated Yuu as he could feel the memories inside of him but can’t tell what exactly they are.

Yuu asks Mika if he doesn’t remember anything - if Mika and the kid in the casket are the same, it means Mika would esentially have the dead kid’s memories, too, right? Mika thinks about it but could only remember hearing a stupid voice saying his name and Yuu says that voice was him lol (but says he’s not stupid).

Realizing they’re not gonna get any valuable information at this time, they decided that it’s time to go futher back.

But first, snack break! For Yuu-chan only though. Yuu goes back to the real world to eat and replenish his energy while Mika gets everything ready. After he eats enough he gets called back in. Mika says they’re going way further back.

Yuu returns to find out a door is in the way. Mika can’t open it although he’s able to take a peek. Yuu asks what Mika saw and Mika just tells him to see for himself and that whatever it was, it’s making Mika question what Yuu truly is.

Yuu steps forward and opens the door to his past.

Well, I gotta say I’m so glad I read this late cause it means I won’t have to wait a month to read the next chapter lol. This is pretty exciting! I agree with Yuu, this feels like watching them go on an adventure.

I actually like this chapter and I’m enjoying it. I love their dialogue, their interactions, and their expressions - they can be funny and cute but it didn’t take away from how exciting this chapter was cause of what they’re currently doing. I ended up smiling when they were snarking at each other, too. It feels like something I missed out on since their actual childhood was cut short by the apocalypse and they got separated. Now in this little memory world adventure, they can be dorks to each other.

It’s weird seeing Mika see his past and probably real self in the casket and just... not react like it’s a big deal. He doesn’t feel like he’s this other person until Yuu points out that technically, they’re probably the same person.

Again, I like the subtle jabs toward each other: Yuu saying the angel Mika is prettier than the Mika with him and Mika calling Yuu stupid when he finds a chance (and Yuu sort of accepting that the 2nd time). I missed just them talking to each other without much angst involved.

I’m excited to see what Mika saw on the other side of the door! I’m also excited to know what would happen once Rigr gets in the memory world, too. Is it the same memory world since Shika Madu was able to do that several chapters ago? And if it is, what would happen if Mika and Yuu meet up with Rigr? A fight or an alliance?

Also, why did the progenitors appear here in their current looks? Some of them are even in their demon forms. Could it be because that’s all Yuu know them as at the moment? Or is it because Yuu is connected to Asuramaru (his first demon)? Or maybe it’s cause of Shika Madu being powerful enough to connect to that memory world too so it’s a mix of the past and the present... ugh, so many possibilities.

Haha anyways, all the answers I’d find out soon. Hopefully. ^_^
