Hand dying silk scarves...
Hand dying silk scarves…
As promised on IG (follow me #valartist) and FB (#thecustombrush) I am going to write a little about the process I used to make some silk scarves.
First let me say that a lot of artist don’t “get” needing a break from painting. But I do need one, I always have. Especially after having cranked out 4 larger paintings. This doesn’t mean I’m not feeling creative, but rather I need some time to…

Hiatt Speaker Series brings Bol Riiny to Beaver
Tumblr media
By Isabella Brooke ‘20
On December 12, 2018, Bol Riiny, one of the Lost Boys from Sudan, visited Beaver Country Day School. He worked with the 6th grade through their Humanities class, spoke to all Upper School students and faculty, and met with students in Upper School English classes. We learned that Bol came to Boston with many other displaced children from Sudan. In order to get here, he spent months walking from Sudan, to Ethiopia, and to Kenya under extremely trying conditions. He talked about his experience coming to the United States as a refugee and emphasized the importance of making change in one's community. We also learned about his nonprofit, Village Help for South Sudan, that supports and builds the education system in the village he was forced to flee.
I originally learned about Bol Riiny when I researched the conflict in Sudan through my independent study on 21st-century conflicts with Mr. Adjout. It felt important to connect this research with an action step that would involve the Beaver community. I worked with Ms. Latour in the Hiatt Center to make this happen. With support from faculty, I designed his schedule, created programing, and took care of the logistics to make his visit happen.
Bol started his day at Beaver with the sixth grade students, and kicked things off by sharing his personal story. Afterwards, the students were split into groups to participate in community action activities designed to help them further explore and understand Bol’s experience and their connection to it. For example, students wrote postcards to elected officials explaining the importance of aiding refugees, asked Bol more specific questions, wrote a reflection on what Bol’s story meant to them, watched a video to learn more about the conflict in Sudan, and brainstormed how to take what they learned back to their own communities.
After this, Bol spoke to all Upper School students and faculty at our weekly Upper School meeting. He spoke with passion and energy as he walked around the auditorium showing images of where he is from and what he went through to get to the United States. He explained how important it is to educate people about international conflicts. This is why education is so important to him as he knows the effect it had on him when he came to the United States, and he knows the effect it has on students at Beaver.
Bol ended his day by talking to students in Upper School English classes. He continued to share his story as students asked questions about Bol’s nonprofit work, his experience moving from Sudan to the United States, and whether he stayed connected to or reconnected with family and friends from Sudan.
Bol showed the Beaver community the importance of education, learning about multiple perspectives, and identifying opportunities to help others. The Beaver community cannot thank Bol enough for giving his time to our community. The message he shared and the change he made will continue to be recognized and greatly appreciated.
Bol Riiny visited Beaver as part of the Hiatt Speaker Series which aims to elevate conversations about social justice. Past speakers include: Bren Bataclan, Dave Hoffman ‘00, Audrey Jiajia Li, Ivan Espinoza Madrigral, Alex Myers, Azure Antoinette and Arn Chorn Pond.

Artist Bren Bataclan Spreads Kindness at Beaver
Tumblr media
Beaver welcomes artist Bren Bataclan during the week of October 1-5.
Bren is a Boston-based artist who’s work is influenced in part by anime. He gives his paintings away around the world with a note saying “This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often.” He also paints murals and gives presentations at schools, hospitals, and businesses.
Bren’s project has been featured in the CBS Evening New with Katie Couric, The Smithsonian Magazine, The Boston Globe, and more.
Prior to painting full time, Bren taught computer graphics and design at the University of Amherst and at the Boston Museum School. He also worked in a design thinking tank lab in Boston and was involved in the computer animation industry in California.
He will present at upper and middle school meetings as well as working in humanities and visual arts classrooms as well as with 9th grade students during flex time. In addition, he is offering three drop in sessions for students during middle school R-Time, middle school lunch and recess, and upper school programming time. On the evening of October 3rd, he will work with parents, guardians, and friends who attend the Beaver Community Event.
