Sunrise on the Reaping theories + thoughts so far (pt 1)

here's a collection of the most likely and most interesting head-canons and stuff I've seen, both fandom-made and my own

NOT MINE BUT EXPANDED & CONNECTED BY ME:

• Tigress pov, as an audience member, maybe she's Haymitch's designer

• we got a tribute pov, a mentor pov, now we could get an audience pov because of the themes of propaganda she emphasizes... we could also get multi pov if she wants to do smth crazy and appease all fans

• Unreliable narrator, perhaps screwing with the reader's head on what actually happened in the games, capitol editing footage out

• Perhaps Tigress observes the games and originally starts off oblivious to the truth but the more she watches and helps Haymitch the more she begins to see the truth, and so the capitol punishes both her and Haymitch for it

• Lucy Gray is midnight, Haymitch/Maysilee is sunrise, Katniss/Peeta is sunset (symbolic of the progression of the games. Lucy Gray wiped out and forgotten, Haymitch the escaped glimmering sliver of change, Katniss the blazing fire and finale)

• Maysilee wore the mockingjay pin in the arena but the capitol edited it out of all the footage

• Themes of light vs dark, truth vs lies, the audience starts out unaware and conflicted but comes to see how things really are

• Katniss parents could appear??? Maybe we'll see Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen fall in love??

MY THEORIES + THOUGHTS:

• (canon) The arena is an illusion. Flowers, water, fruit, mountains, animals. It's beautiful, heavenly, too good to be true, it doesn't seem real... well, it's not real. Everything seems normal and like you know what it is, but the Entire Setting is actually poisonous and deadly. JUST like the theme of propaganda and lies, she says the book is about. The arena itself is a meta layer to things not being as they appear.

• the cover will have a mockingjay and a sunrise or sun-flare, gold against purple

• the "sunrise" in the title is symbolism, for a person and a theme, likely symbolic of Maysilee Donner because of her kindness and humanity and spirit casting light in the face of violence and war (the reaping). A light the capitol would've snuffed out, to hide the truth. (I have a whole essay on this + maysilee's importance pls check my feed)

• Maysilee is the real mockingjay, and very important, not just a random dead background character who passed down the pin to Katniss. We know how Collins' brain works. Look at TBOSAS. Look at how she foreshadowed Lucy Gray as early as the first book. 

• the mockingjay isn't just one person, but a symbol of resistance and goodness and freedom, that anyone can take on as a mantle, an idea rather than tied to one thing or person. Lucy Gray, Rue, Katniss, and likely Maysilee.

• a rebellion almost happened with the mockingjay pin and Maysilee and Haymitch and perhaps Tigress seeing the truth last minute, but the capitol snuffed it out and destroyed all the evidence of such a thing ever happening, including Haymitch's family and punishing Tigress, leading Panem and the readers themselves in the dark and at peace. Maysilee is the warm sun to bring the spark of a fire, her pin symbolically passes onto Katniss through her niece, thus passing on the resistance and legacy. ....symbolic of how the mockingjay had the will to survive, even when it was destroyed and wiped out.... It escaped and became stronger in the face of its enemies....

• ...for all we know, Katniss' dad didn't die in a coal mining accident, but perhaps was a rebel himself and the capitol planted explosions in the mines to get rid of him. we can't just blindly trust the narrative.

• If Haysilee is a parallel to Everlark, what if Haymitch's girlfriend is a Gale figure? This isn't just because I'm a haysilee shipper I'm built to be a multishipper I'm FIGHTING not to be biased I'm openminded, but i feel the haysilee content in my bones and it's definitely a possibility

• the capitol (and Snow) believes that humanity is vile, that humans will always give into instinct and fend for themselves, that you can't trust or love or anyone lest it lead to your downfall. So... If Ballad was about humanity's corruption, perhaps Reaping is about humanity's goodness (the bond between Haymitch and Maysilee, Tigress seeing the truth despite being a capitol/audience member, perhaps the Capitol cut the footage of that bond to prevent a rebellion like Everlark's relationship later induces) 

• Most people are saying this book will be super depressing and focused on the capitol's propaganda succeeding to stop a rebellion, and I do agree, but, that doesn't cancel out highlighting themes of goodness and friendship but rather enhances them. Perhaps that very thing is what we're missing from the footage, what the capitol succeeded in covering up, raw humanity being the thing that defies their propaganda the most, and punished anyone who acted otherwise (Haymitch, Tigress...)

thg headcanons:

(Trigger warning for phobia, trauma and psychological mentionings)

the Hawthornes have a family song/lullaby: the “I love you song” ( Frankie Valley LOVE song). It all started out with mr h and hazelle having a dance to the song, and then gales dad just starts sing to hazelle and his kids to ‘brighten up their lives’. Gale n hazelle continues on the song to sing the kids to sleep, cuz it is a sweet thing that makes them think of the good times before the chaos.

katniss uses unscented shampoo and conditioners. she hates the reminder of it’s artificial, unrealistic, inauthenticity— like the Capitol. By being unscented and not having any connection to the Capitol, katniss allows herself to be free and unbranded. peeta always uses fresh or sweeter scents: maybe like mint and chamomile. But he ends up smelling like backed good at the end of the day

haymitch is Madge’s godfather like figure. he is close to her mother, due to being connected to mayslee. cuz of this, the undersees trust him a lot and have so much faith with him. he even cares a lot for Madge too, wanting what’s good for her.

Johanna, from the hjacking, developed a phobia of any form of water. cuz of that, she couldn’t take a proper shower or bath for a good couple of years, and won’t visit district 4 (also the pain of losing a close friend). she would clean herself with watered rags and wipe her body clean. she also cuts her hair short, never too short, but short and asks Annie to wash her hair for her— which she always does and hold her hands telling her she’s okay.

To add on, I think Katniss develops on onset phobia of needles. After all the trauma and abuse she got from the capital and the revolution, she hates the idea of needles, cus it just trigger her fight-or-flight reaction to protecting herself. Especially all the episodes of being unconscious, drugged up or injuries beyond repair.

Annie, I think, would want to become a psychologist, or something incredibly similar in the future. She learns to become better and helps other with similar situations to improve themselves to become more at ease. She specifies in trauma/addiction and childhood psychotherapy.

The mellarks adopt another cat and name it dandelion. Similar to the flower/plant motive of the Everdeens name, but also cause it reminds katniss of peeta. Dandelion, the cat, would be blonde with white in it. And it would be always there at the corner of katniss’ eye

Finnick has a massive book collection and poetry collection at his place. Him, Mags and Annie all have a ‘Book Club’ group and talk to each other

Finnick can’t sing anything other than sea-ship songs. Like those old-times pirate/ sea songs. He also sways a little when he stands too still for too long— an old habit that died hard from his youth his his dad owning a boat. Annie smtimes joins him w his singing, and mags too

when katniss leaves for the hunger games and she's saying goodbye in the justice building, madge visits her which we know is how she got the mockingjay pin but ALSO

madge gives her a little kiss on the cheek and we know this isn't her normal behavior bc katniss is surprised and thinks to herself wow maybe we were friends all along. katniss calls it another unexpected gift.

I propose: madge has a schoolgirl crush on her just like Peeta did

So she just has a ton of them and wears them occasionally 😭😭

yes!!! i totally see katniss having so many scrunchies that she starts to share them too. she likes to brush prim's hair and give the final touch with a scrunchie that matches her outfit. she definitely has put haymitch's hair up in a ponytail with a hot pink scrunchie more than once.

she has her favorite ones that she doesn't share with anyone !! i would say that her favorites are the first one madge ever gave her, one with cute flowers, one madge gave her on her 15th birthday after a sleepover at her house, and a plain green one.

Fic Update: Favors (Hunger Games AU)

Favors. AU from the end of the 74th Hunger Games. After the two-winner rule is revoked, Peeta takes his own life before Katniss can stop him. Her grief-driven words over his body still defy the Capitol and endanger everyone left that she loves. Haymitch and the other victors struggle to help her navigate the dark, dangerous world of mentoring and forced prostitution…and in the end, she still becomes the Mockingjay.

Chapter 53: Speak Comfort To Me: Exhausted, heartbroken, and in shock, Katniss struggles to make sense of what has happened, commiserates with fellow victors, and Peeta is there in her dreams to help find her way. As her escape hovercraft arrives in District 13, news arrives of Madge and Rory and the other victors, some of whom did not survive the violent trip. Snow launches further retaliation against the victors throughout Panem as refugees flow into District 13.

To Stay or To Go is also now updated and COMPLETE with the last two chapters!

Bet this was not on your bingo for today, but I got a itch to talk about my very tiny Gadge headcanon. Not the most thought out detailed thing but a headcanon I have none the less.

I do genueinely like to believe Gadge, for a time, was a thing. Some time between Katniss choosing to train to go into the arena I think Gale did truely let go of Katniss, at least until in MJ he has the smallest hope at a change and feels the need to fight for it. And in that time something really beautful happened between him and Madge. They don't do in intentionally under Katniss's nose, more of like they agreed their friend was just going through WAY to much to put any worry about what was happening between them onto her. There genuinely hope is that if Katniss survives, and she can recover enough that they can find a time when they could tell her.

And I head canon this brief but serious relationship ends in Gale calling on her to help him evacuate people to the meadow. She is helping him get the word out, and telling people where to do. Unfortunately she gets killed in the bombing with several family's she was trying to convince to leave.

Gale of course does tell her Madge died, but leaves how out. For her sake, as well as his own. To keep some small peice of her with him.

Supreme wartime order #12

Trigger warning: Snow ordered Avoxes to assemble naked to be reaped for the feeding of mutts and Peeta watched at least one Avox die every day while In the capital.

"The disease of rebellion has infected the gem of Panem, it was spread by a vile schemer named Plutarch heavensbee who started the current war. Avoxes have been giving away secrets to the rebels they are to blame for the defeats in District 11. To remind the rebels that the capital has no place for traitors I have ordered that all Avoxes assemble in the avenue of the tributes Tuesday morning where I will be present. These avoxes betrayed their own blood and retribution must be paid! Wear your best clothes and give the avoxes no clothing for I shall reap 20,000 Avoxes to train our mutts for war and to purify Panem with the blood of Avox traitors. For the duration of the war alongside military parades to raise morale their shall be a zoo where the proud citizens of the capital shall witness the Capital once again bringing justice to Panem! All hail my genius all hail your supreme leader Snow! "

As Peeta sees Pollux he holds back tears as he says "your an avox" everyone is afraid of Peeta having an episode. Peeta has casually mentioned avoxes being fed to mutts and Snow personally torturing avoxes. Peeta apologizes for being unable to save Lavnia and Darius and asks if it's real. I recall Peeta's drawings of everything he is describing, the pieces of Darius's flesh on the ground, the electric shocks that ended Lavnia all my fualt! Finnick has clearly seen this before with Annie and goes to comfort Peeta before he loses it and begins being attacked by illusionary avoxes. But I react angerly how would he like it if I comforted Annie? I glare at him as my arms go around Peeta. I give Peeta a hug squezzing him tightly so noone can take him away from me and he sobs into my chest. I pick his head up and put my cheek into his ear and whisper into his ear

"shhhh, it's all right we will make snow pay, I won't let him hurt you or anyone else ever again."

I put his head over my shoulder and he puts his arms around me. His heart is steady. I wonder how many bottles of morphling Peeta would need to not crumble at the sight of an avox but he does not need morphling he has me. Peeta feels butterflies in his stomach and is blushing his face white, and feels calm, he feels protected. The very side of him that choked her feels something it cherishes, safety. He pushes away guilt that he ever thought all the nasty stuff about her, said that her death would bring him closure, but most of all he fears hurting her during an episode. He tries to concentrate on the feeling of safety and puts his arms around Katniss. The part of Peeta once known as the mutt has never felt conforting arms or felt loved in his life though some vague Blue filled memories of the train appear. He wants to reach for those memories so he tenses up and squeezes her so she can provide comfort from the attacks of the hallucinations. Katniss melts from Peeta's arms but also sees his muscles tense, and asks "what?" Peeta says "trying to find what out really happened on the train." Boggs interrupts them "ok Lovebirds we have a propo to film" both Peeta and Katniss give Boggs a dirty look for interrupting them. Peeta looks like an angry mutt and Katniss looks like she wants to put an arrow into Boggs. Their bodies are still connected and but are standing side by side with their arms around eachother. Boggs is unfazed and simply says "let's go that's an order."

Hunger Games headcanons:

VOICES-

Katniss = I think she has a very feminine voice, but, it’s quiet and very low. Like she is always speaking with a sort of flu. I would imagine it like a decent sounding voice- sounding very caring. She stresses certain words and certain letter ( like the A in Peeta or the R n M in Prim). An early Rory Gilmore maybe???

Peeta = a worldly accepted nice voice. I like to think he had a bit of a speech- impediment as a little kid or toddler, and his mum mad him read-out-aloud to be both a confidence speaker and has proper articulation. Very charming voice, like he can be real persuasive. All words are pronounced perfectly and nice. Like an audiobook reader.

Gale = I think his would sound so similar to Kevin Eleven. I can’t explain it. Like it’s moderately low, but it’s youthful enough to remind you he is still a teenager. It might even sound like his nose is a bit blocked? Idk. I think he also sounds like he is always sarcastic, but kids really grasp onto him, thinking he ‘sounds cool’

Annie = she sounds like Cher from clueless. Like so so nice and sweet. A loveable Valley girl

Effie = exactly like Elizabeth Banks. Maybe more of a transatlantic accent- with a bit more British flair!!

Haymitch = a very distinctive mix b/ween Woody and current Billy Ray Cyrus. Has a smokers laugh. Voice carries a lot of weight and somber. A voice that can put you into a good nights sleep

Finnick = surfer. Malibu. A Cali guy accent that idk of. I’m imagining a younger, more calmer version of that Turtle from Finding Nemo. Idk. Idk how. But that’s Finnick.

Johanna- a mix of an American- Canadian accent. She sound like she’s from Washington/Oregan (canon in d7 location)

Madge= a very pretty voice. Similar to peeta, I think she had lots of public speaking practices, due to being the daughter of the mayor. However, she is really quite so no one hears her talking too much h. But everyone stops and listens to what she says- a real leader type of voice. Like everyone can hear it perfect, it’s right everything. A fairing charm and attractiveness I think. I also think she is really good at mimicking accent. Has a bit of a habit calling ppl w nicknames, like sweetie or darling or smth. Some sarcastic and others to be nice.

Prim = it’s a real gentle voice. Like all her words are whispers and really soft. Like a perpetually lullaby or speaking to a young child voice. But it always carry’s a sombering sadness that can’t be masked, even if she isn’t sad.

Beetee = exactly in the movie. I wouldn’t change a thing. A piece of perfection!! Maybe w a British- erudite ness to his voice. Otherwise, nothing

Snow = transatlantic. Exactly like an old Hollywood movie. He doesn’t sound like anyone around him- talks like he is from another world. But I think he makes himself seem different; he will make a trend to be English-sounding and once all Capitol citizens mimic him, he swaps and then comes American. He does this all the time

do u have any random mundane haycanons (haymitch headcanons) bc he deserves to be domestic

hi bel.. i totally do..

1 . he's a pescatarian. i've said this sooo many times offhandedly but this came about during a really bad hallucination where he had cooked something for dinner and thought he was eating human meat instead of regular game. put him off entirely. that man lives off croutons, salad, several condiments, long-frozen fish, and several not meats. he CAN cook but it'll never be meat related. pre-war anyway.

2 . he's got a serious phobia of birds (yes it contradicts the geese but i don't care.) seeing maysilee being skewered like a straight kebab rewired his brain.

3 . circling back to his eating habits, having his intestines come out of his body for that small period of time during his games made his digestive system a lot more fragile. so he eats light stuff when he can and like. the good ol finger food when given the chance. like canon, he totally has a sweet tooth but being nice to himself is rare, so it's not often he'll have cake or the like. reminds him of the donner family.

4 . after his games, he managed to keep up a good relationship with mrs. undersee and works as a surrogate uncle to madge. the times she comes over he's completely sober & the house is niced up for her sake. it's his only excuse to take care of everything (and himself.)

5 . shaves with one of those old fashioned razors. anything electric would honestly scare him shitless. just very old fashioned as is and would have archives of preserved media in my head.

6 . post-war not only does he refurbish his house (which takes some time because he has to try and recuperate and get to a good level of sobriety while balancing his mentally ill mentees,) but he also plans to leave 12. where is he going? likely to 7 to keep tabs on johanna/try and start full retirement or would travel about with her to give her some distractions.

7 . very much a cat person but wouldn't tell you that until a cat is in his face. the ONLY thing that could sway him. haymitch absolutely adores buttercup (who he sees as a little ratbag despite that) and is overcaring the seam strays because he can.

Some Hunger Games Headcanon.

Prim is a gentle soul and doesn't like anyone getting hurt and in pain but canonically she doesn't get scared when seeing injured bodies(since she helps her mother in treating patients) and loves medicine. So in a modern and non-capitol au, I feel she is one of those people who doesn’t get scared by brutal death scenes in horror movies and would point out anatomical/medical inaccuracies in the movie during a brutal killing scene though in other scenarios(like jumpscares) she would get scared.

Peeta, since he loves art and in the modern au, I see him becoming a professional artist, would definitely also point out how unrealistic the blood/bruises/injuries look though he gets scared during other scenarios(like jumpscares which is semi-canon due to him getting scared by katniss and finnick's prank)in horror movies.

Katniss and gale definitely don't like horror movies and get shit scared. Whenever prim and peeta point out inaccuracies in the movies, they(katniss and gale)definitely stare at them as if they(peeta and prim) are crazy. Though, they are also those kind of people who would curse at the protagonists for stupid decisions like splitting up, going in a clearly haunted house etc.

Madge undersee, is the one who doesn’t get scared at all and would watch the entire horror movie like she is watching the weather forecast. And that makes everyone cling to her during a scary scene.

Fic Update: Favors (Hunger Games AU)

Favors. AU from the end of the 74th Hunger Games. After the two-winner rule is revoked, Peeta takes his own life before Katniss can stop him. Her grief-driven words over his body still defy the Capitol and endanger everyone left that she loves. Haymitch and the other victors struggle to help her navigate the dark, dangerous world of mentoring and forced prostitution…and in the end, she still becomes the Mockingjay.

Epilogue: From the Ashes: Katniss waits with other refugees as the displaced and wounded flood into District 13 from around Panem, waiting for the all-important hovercraft containing the survivors of District 12.

Tributes of the 74th Hunger Games

DISCLAIMER: This is not my attempt at asserting anything about the canon version of events and characters. Instead, this is a reference list for my Hunger Games fic Holding Bright, which is an AU! Meaning that there are two major changes you will see in this list: (1) the District 12 tributes are Madge and Gale, and (2) Madge is 18 instead of 16. Also, it is my headcanon that Madge is short for Marigold :)

The list is divided by district, with the male tribute first, followed by the female tribute. The numbers next to each tribute's name is their age at the time of the reaping. Under the Read More are some of my thoughts on how I decided on certain names

Alanna's given name is a reference to famous mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. Milo's surname is an even more low key reference to him as well (aka I got a little lazy lol)

My thought process to come up with a name related to D3's industry: kilowatt -> kilo -> Milo

In the books, but even more so the movies, D4 is sort of Irish-coded (which doesn't really make sense because the East Coast is much more well known for having Irish-Americans than the West Coast but oh well), so for Hurley's first name I chose an Irish name

However, based on the map of Panem, I headcanon that D4 has a good amount of Latino influence (though I think D10 even more so): because of this, Hurley's surname + Adriana's full name are all Spanish-language names

I also chose the name Adriana because it sounds like Adriatic Sea, tying her into D4's industry

I went along with popular fanon that Foxface's first name is Finch

Because he's from D5 (power), Nate's first name comes from alternating current -> alternate -> Nate

D5 takes up almost all of current-day Arizona + a good amount of Utah + parts of Nevada and New Mexico. Because of this, I think D5 has a lot of descendants of the current-day Navajo people, so I gave him a sort of common Navajo surname

Ivan's name contains the word "van", and Dola's name is a bastardization of the word "gondola" because I wanted things sort of related to transportation lol 😅

D6 partially encompasses Minnesota, which has a ton of Scandinavian-Americans, so I gave Dola a Scandinavian surname

Sawyer's first name means "woodcutter". His surname is of Blackfeet origin

D8's tributes have names that sound like words related to their industry: Dennis sounds like "denim", and Callie is from "calico"

I made up the name Bartley because it sounds like "barley"

Colton's first name has the word "colt" in it, tying him into D10's industry of livestock. His surname, as well as Blanca's full name, are Spanish-language names due to D10 being in present-day Texas and Mexico
