Madelyn Pugh Davis

Madelyn Pugh Davis was born in 1921 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Davis is best remembered as one of the principal writers for I Love Lucy. She was involved in writing all 179 episodes of the iconic series. Davis won a Golden Globe and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. In 1992, she and her partner, Bob Carroll, won the Laurel award from the Writers Guild of America.

Madelyn Pugh Davis died in 2011 at the age of 90.

Remembering Debbie Reynolds (1932-2016) on what would have been her 91st birthday. In late 1969 through early 1970 Debbie Reynolds starred in 'The Debbie Reynolds Show'. The show lasted only one season. During the shows' run, a tabloid manufactured "feud" between Lucy and Debbie also made it's run. Fueled mostly by reviews calling Debbie's new show "a pale imitation of I Love Lucy" or more personal criticisms like, "a second rate Lucille Ball", Debbie was hurt by the insinuation that she had ripped Lucy off. What reviewers and tabloids failed to report was that the primary reason for the similarities between 'I Love Lucy' and 'The Debbie Reynolds Show' was that the show was created and produced by Jess Oppenheimer with writing contributions from Madelyn Pugh Davis and Bob Carroll, Jr.. But yet, Debbie bore the brunt of the blame. One entertainment news article from that period seemed to come to Debbie's defense, but still omitted the obvious: 'The last thing Debbie Reynolds expected from the critics when she started her new Fall TV show was that they would say it was a pale imitation of early Lucille Ball! The truth is...if there is a similarity between the two actresses it is because they both have a lot of the same sense of fun, the ridiculous, the zaniness. The plots in Debbie's show were about a married couple with two adult friends and that in itself would make for familiar situations in many of the old Lucy and Desi shows. MOVING Lucille Ball’s remains from Los Angeles to the upstate New York town where she was born is an idea she wouldn’t have loved.

That’s what some former co-workers on “I Love Lucy” said yesterday.

“I think she’d be a little alarmed,” says Madelyn Pugh Davis, a writer on “I Love Lucy” who worked closely with Ball for years.

“She didn’t like a big fuss made over her,” she says. “If you complimented Lucy she’d say ‘Oh come on.’ She was a very down-to-earth person and she might wonder what all the fuss is about.”

“I don’t think she’d approve of the idea of being moved,” says William Asher who was a director on “I Love Lucy.”

Lucy’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz this week suggested the cross-counter move to Lake View cemetery, located about two miles from the Lucy-Desi Museum in Jamestown.

The remains of Lucy’s mother, “Dee Dee” Evelyn Hunt, who is interred next to Ball, would also be moved.

“It would be a nice finishing touch,” Arnaz told reporters this week.

Lucy and her mother are interred in a mausoleum at the famed Los Angeles cemetery, Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Hollywood Hills. Other family members, including Ball’s grandparents, are buried in Jamestown.

“The most important thing to Lucille Ball, was to be buried with her mother, and so I guess that would still be achieved,” said Kathleen Brady, author of “Lucille: The Life of Lucille Ball.”

The Forest Hills mausoleum was originally selected by Dee Dee as her final resting place. Ball left instructions that when she died, she wanted to be place near her mother, Brady said.

“Where she is now in Forest Lawn cemetery is rather grim and cold,” Brady said “It is entirely probable – especially since the family is involved – that a place in Jamestown would be more appropriate in terms of our sense of Lucy.”

Arnaz has not yet contacted the cemetery about a possible move, says Forest Lawn’s spokeswoman Paula Woodley.

Arnaz and her brother, Desi Jr., are bidding on their mother’s childhood home in the nearby Chautauqua County village of Celoron, about 60 miles south of Buffalo.

It was Lucy’s home from the time she was eight years old until she was midway through high school. The two-story house, which has become a tourist stop, is being offered on eBay for $98,500.

The Luci-Desi Museum had been under the control of the Chautauqua County Arts Council under a 10-year contract with the Arnaz family that expired last week.

Arnaz has reportedly been scouting locations around Jamestown to expand the museum, a move applauded by local merchants

MADELYN PUGH

March 15, 1921

Madelyn Laverne Pugh was born in Indianapolis in 1921. She became interested in writing at  Shortridge High School with classmate Kurt Vonnegut. She graduated from Indiana University School of Journalism in 1942. Her first professional writing job was writing short radio spots for an Indianapolis radio station.

When her family moved to California, she got work as a radio writer, first for NBC and then CBS where she forged a partnership with Bob Carroll Jr. which lasted more than 50 years. Together they wrote some 400 television programs and roughly 500 radio shows. While writing for “The Steve Allen Show”, they became interested in writing for Lucille Ball's new radio show, “My Favorite Husband”. Under the supervision of head writer Jess Oppenheimer, the pair wrote Ball's radio program for its 2½ years. 

Pugh and Carroll helped create a vaudeville act for Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz, which became the basis for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy.”  Pugh was credited with co-writing all 180 episodes of the series from 1951 to 1957. Starting with season six her on-screen credit read Madelyn Martin after her marriage to TV producer Quinn Martin. 

As the final scene of “Lucy’s Last Birthday” (ILL S2;E25) opens at the Tropicana, Ricky thanks

“Pugh and Carroll – the two greatest contortionists in America today.”  

This inside joke refers to the fact that the writers tried out all of Lucy’s stunts before they wrote them into the script.

In “Pregnant Women are Unpredictable” (ILL S2;E11), Lucy can’t decide on what to name her unborn baby.  After an episode full of male / female name possibilities (including Unique and Euphonious) the episode ends with Lucy saying,

"You don’t love little Robert or Madelyn!”

Although never a performer, Pugh (along with Carroll) appeared as extras in the café scene in “Paris at Last” (ILL S5;E18) on February 27, 1956.

With Carroll, she also wrote episodes of: 

“The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” ~ 5 of 13 episodes from 1957 to 1958. She served as script consultant for the remaining 7 episodes. 

“The Lucy Show” ~  58 of 156 episodes from 1962 to 1964. She was also the show’s co-creator.

“Here's Lucy” ~ 24 of 144 episodes from 1970 to 1974. Her onscreen credit now read Madelyn Davis after her marriage to Richard Davis. 

“Life with Lucy” ~ 4 of 13 episodes in 1986. She was also the show’s co-creator and producer.  

Madelyn also co-created Desilu’s “Those Whiting Girls” (1955), an “I Love Lucy” summer replacement series. 

She co-wrote “K.O. Kitty”, an episode of “The Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” starring Lucille Ball in her first non-Lucy Ricardo role in 1958. 

Davis and Carroll created and wrote the successful Desi Arnaz-produced series “The Mothers-in-Law” (1967-69) which starred Lucille Ball’s longtime MGM pals Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard.  Producer Desi did two cameos on the show.

Just prior to that, working with Desi and not Lucy, they created “The Carol Channing Show” (1966), but the pilot was not picked up for production.

They also wrote the story for the film (a rare non-TV endeavor) Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) based on the book “Who Gets the Drumstick” by Helen Beardsley.

Carroll and Pugh served as executive producers and did some writing for the hit television series “Alice”, starring Linda Lavin, for which the duo won a Golden Globe Award. Desi Arnaz appeared on the sitcom in 1978.

In 1979 Lucille Ball recruited Carroll and Davis to pen one last adventure: “Lucy Calls The President” - an hour-long special featuring many of Ball’s former co-stars.

Madelyn Pugh Davis’ memoir, Laughing with Lucy, was released September 2005.

Pugh and Carroll were nominated for three Emmy Awards for their work on “I Love Lucy.”

She died on April 20, 2011 at age 90.
