Turning the Page
Memories - Chapter 1
Chapter Summary: While remembering bittersweet memories of her time in Cordonia, Riley comes to the realization that there are still unanswered questions to pursue from the night of the Coronation Ball.
Music Inspiration: Far Side of the World, Holden Miller, The Way We Were, Lucy Thomas
A/N: My submission for @choicesflashfics, Week #41, Prompt #1, “You make me feel like I’m worth it.”
A/N2: In this alternate universe, after King Constantine orchestrates two individual scandals to humiliate and entrap Riley Brooks and Olivia Nevrakis in shame, Madeleine Amaranth secures her position as the Queen of Cordonia. Riley, as the King’s mistress and Olivia, in self-imposed exile. Tariq is never found.
“...I can’t do this anymore.” Riley answered softly.
Daniel’s heart broke in two as he looked at his dear friend. Her tear-stained cheeks and red-rimmed eyes told him everything that he needed to know.
“It’s okay, Riley,” Daniel said. “It’s not your fault. You were put in a difficult position.”
Her bottom lip trembling; those words spoken, was all it took for her to break down.
…. Remembering the day she danced with her prince at the Coronation Ball, and he said,
‘I hope you never have cause to regret coming here.’
‘Why would you say that?’
‘Well, so much has happened, and...’
As the song winds down, Prince Liam’s hands linger on her waist, his eyes searching hers.
‘I need to talk to you.’
‘Is something wrong?’
***
Wrapping his arm around her shoulders Daniel pulled her close to his chest, breaking the memory.
“I should have known that I was in way over my head. The signs were all there.” Riley spoke between sobs.
“This situation is so fucked up. Falling in love with a man from across the ocean, whose duty to his country dictates his future. Whose life is not his own. His world is so foreign to you. A world unavailable to....”
Riley took a deep breath and met his gaze.
“Stop. Just stop. ...Please.”
“Mommy?” “Dan Dan?” A little voice called out.
Daniel looked over at Riley’s son, walking with his pail towards the sandcastle that they had all made together.
“Hey, buddy, what do you have in your pail?”
“Fo howse,” he pointed to the sandcastle.
“One sec, Ri. I will be right back.” Daniel kissed Riley’s forehead quickly and walked towards the little boy.
Riley closed her eyes, continuing to remember the words Liam spoke to her the night they visited the Statue of Liberty.
‘...but I’ve always known that my role would require me to give up much of what I desire.’
‘You’re the prince. Can't you do what you want, at least some of the time?’
‘If only. My whole life I’ve prepared myself to do what’s best for Cordonia.’
Looking at her son. Looking at Liam’s son.
Riley had an epiphany.
***
The royal council meeting lasted well into the evening. It was almost 9:30 pm when the last council member left the boardroom at the palace. Liam stood up from his chair and started to walk down the long hallway to his study. His plans for the rest of the evening included shooting hoops with Drake and a stop at the beer garden later to wind down. Pouring himself a finger of Scotch he sat down at his desk and reclined his chair. Pulling out his phone, he checked for any missed messages or calls, but nothing of interest was received. The one and only person he wanted to desperately hear from still eluded him.
Three years ago.
The love of his life.
Walked away from him.
Three years of being alone.
Even though he constantly had people around him; Regina, Leo, his guards, nobles, his friends. But never her.
He would never blame her for walking away. The situation was. Is. So very unfair to her. So undeserved.
And if he was being honest with himself. Very unfair to him. His entire life, he was groomed to serve the Cordonian people and the monarchy. To fulfill ‘his duty’ to Cordonia, without question.
When Riley captured his heart that fateful night in New York, he felt the walls of duty surrounding him start to crumble.
When Riley followed him to the masquerade ball to join the social season, his world shifted in its axis. Thinking that he would never see Riley again, he was given the best surprise. Just to think that she travelled all the way from New York City to be with him.
‘I know we have something special. I want to see what it can be.’
And now, after all the years, his guilt still consumed him.
How he wished he could find out how she was. To make sure she's OK. Hopefully. She moved on with her life. Tears welled in his eyes. He missed Riley. Every day he thought about her and wondered where she was. He missed her voice. He missed her smile.
He remembered everything, and could forget, nothing.
Wanting to relax he stretched his legs and reclined his chair more. His eyes drifted shut and he was almost asleep when he heard a knock on the door.
“Come.” Liam called out in response.
Opening his eyes, he saw Madeleine scowling down at him.
Liam grinned at the thought. It had to be her. No one else would have been able to make such an impression on his guards, to let her in without his permission.
“You know, Madeleine, I think I have seen enough of you for this evening. Please go away and do whatever you do in the evening.”
Liam was well aware that Madeleine kept her own Cordonian arrangement with a dignitary from Morocco. He was in the capital this evening on business, planning to rendezvous with her tonight.
“You know Liam, I am not a child. I understand that you are in a position of authority, and I know that you cannot spend all your time with me.”
“I do need you to come to my chambers and spend the evening with me.” She stood waiting for his answer as Liam felt her gaze burning through him.
At least once a month, Madeleine tried to persuade Liam to sleep with her, but to no avail.
Tonight, was no exception.
“You have not answered my question. Are you coming to my chambers or not?”
“Madeleine, it is a generous offer, but there is no way in hell I want to spend my evening with you. I have plans. Not that it is any of your business. I am spending time with friends tonight.”
“Do you realize, Liam, we have been married for almost four years now and yet no heir. How long will this last? Our people are waiting for news!”
“Isn’t Eduardo waiting for you, Madeleine?” Liam scoffed.
“You will not even touch me. For as long as I see fit, at the very least he pays attention to me. How long will you wait for Riley to magically reappear? She left you Liam. She left you high and dry. She could not handle it. Stop embarrassing yourself, Liam. This country wants an heir. It is our duty to supply one.”
There was a short knock on the door and Drake popped his head through the doorway.
“Li, my apologies for interrupting.” Drake gave Liam a ‘knowing look’.
“Queen Madeleine.”
Liam stood up from his desk, glowering at Madeleine and turned towards his bar cart. Picking up a bottle of Macallen, “Drake, my man, come have a drink with me. This one is leaving.”
Madeleine ‘glared daggers’ at Liam as she watched him pour whiskey into two lowball glasses, Huffing, she turned around and walked out of his study, not acknowledging Drake. Drake raised an eyebrow, “was I interrupting something important?”
“Hell, no.” Liam shot back his drink and slammed the glass onto his desk.
“Let's play some ball.”
***
“I need to ask a favor of you, Daniel.” Riley called out.
“Anything, Ri, of course,” Daniel replied.
Standing up from the sand he reached down and scooped up Riley's son into his arms. Walking towards her, Riley smiled as she held out her arms.
“Li Li, come to mommy, sweetheart.”
That is all it took for the giggles to start. William squealed and successfully wrangled out of Daniel’s grasp to get to his mom.
Shaking his head, “this kid will kick my butt one day!”
“What's up, Riley?”
Taking a deep breath, “well, remember that certain table that you asked me to serve the night before I left for Cordonia?” Riley sheepishly looked at her friend.
“How could I forget?” Daniel raised his eyebrow in question.
“Yes, well....”
Riley looked down, not able to meet his eyes.
“Remember, there were four men. Liam, of course, was one. Tariq, as well, was there.”
“Oh yes and I remember there were two others with them.”
“Yes, that’s right, Drake and Maxwell. I need you to contact Maxwell.”
“OK, Riley. Sure, that sounds easy enough. I remember that I still owe you a favor for looking after that table that night for me.”
Riley smirked at the look of horror that suddenly fell on his face for saying that aloud.
“Anything Riley.... What is his address?”
“Actually, I need you to call him.”
“OK, call him. ...and what do you want me to say?”
“I need you to ask him to come here. to New York City.”
“Riley. Are you sure that's a good idea? Won't he tell Liam your whereabouts? Aren't you concerned?”
“Daniel, I am going to ask Maxwell, as my friend. To help me get some answers. But first I need to talk to Maxwell and explain everything to him in person. He needs to come here alone. And I need you to sell that reason to him to come alone, and not to bring anyone with him. Could you do that for me?"
Daniel paused. Looking at his dear friend. “Yes,” he said begrudgingly.
“I sure hope you know what you're doing.”
“So do I, Daniel. So, do I.”
“For you and this little one, I want nothing but happiness from now on. You deserve the world.”
“Thank you, Daniel...for everything.
“You make me feel like I’m worth it.”

Oi oi anon!

Generally, though, the focus tends to be on an adult individual who has been radicalized or the impact on their partners or parents. There’s been less attention paid to the unique position of teachers who find themselves faced with radicalizing students, even though they’re often the first witnesses of the early warning signs of red-pilling among a younger cohort. “I have totally noticed the radicalization of students with MRA stuff,” says Kira-Lynn Ferderber, a sexual violence prevention educator in Florida. “I teach kids of all ages but I notice it most in middle school and high school boys, and it’s getting worse and worse.”
Often, it’s hard for teachers to tell whether a student is being truly red-pilled in the sense that they’re being radicalized online, or whether they’re parroting views that they’ve grown up with in their conservative households. Tessa, a 29-year-old in the Midwest who teaches 14- to 18-year-olds at a private school for students with learning impairments, says that while many of her students “simply take on the talking points and politics of their conservative parents,” this can make them especially ripe targets for full-blown radicalization and infatuation with far-right figures. “A few started listening to Joe Rogan’s podcast, which led to them reading Jordan Peterson’s books,” she says. “I think that Joe Rogan’s ideology is the biggest threat to critical thinking in the last decade.”
…
When teachers notice the warning signs of radicalization, difficult questions arise: Where is the line between shutting down these arguments and allowing kids to explore new ideas? And when is the right moment to intervene?
…
Tessa says that students often take on this conspiratorial mindset, too. “A lot of the conspiracies these students believe, like superior white genetics or that being LGBTQ+ is a mental illness, take root for them specifically because they think it’s a hidden truth I’m keeping from them as a teacher,” she explains. “They think I’m brainwashed by liberal narratives and that I’m compelled to lie to them.”
Jacob and Tessa’s experiences seem to be especially typical for teachers based in areas where deep conservatism is the norm. Here, the problem of students radicalizing online is often compounded at a social and institutional level, with far-right views being encouraged by parents and even other teachers. Jennifer’s flat-earther student transferred to her class in the middle of the year, so she wasn’t sure how quickly the radicalization had taken place. But after he was so disruptive during lessons that she ended up scheduling a meeting with his father, it became apparent that both he and the internet had a role to play.
…
Another problem when students are red-pilled is that they then attempt to convert other classmates. Red-pilled students become highly argumentative and confrontational during lessons to sway the class toward their ideas, which puts teachers in a bind. On one hand, they want to encourage the exploration of ideas in the classroom, but on the other, they don’t want class time to be endlessly derailed with debates about long-settled science and ethical norms, like racism being bad and LGBTQ+ people deserving rights.
“It’s hard because if I disregard [the manosphere students’ questions], I sometimes feel like it makes other students think, ‘Huh, she doesn’t have a good answer for that, it must be true!’” Ferderber explains. “So it doesn’t work to say, ‘I won’t dignify that with a response,’ but if you go down the rabbit hole with them, is it serving the needs of the other students?”
Of course, teachers are human too, and the emotional impact of being constantly challenged in the classroom can take a toll. “It was so frustrating,” Jennifer says about her flat-earth student perpetually derailing the classroom with his conspiracies. “He literally made me feel like I was a fraud, and it didn’t help that I was a new teacher at the time. When he’d tell me I was wrong and that these are the ‘alternative facts,’ I could feel my class lose their trust in me. It was a crazy power struggle for sure.”
It can also be devastating for teachers to realize that, despite their best efforts, some of their students might end up holding hateful beliefs long term, and many of them take it personally. “My biggest worry is that they’ll be stuck in their thinking forever, and that they’ll join the Proud Boys or something,” Tessa says. “I feel like I should be able to do a better job at teaching critical-thinking skills and they should have enough trust in me to believe that I’m telling them the truth.”
“Honestly,” she adds, “it makes me feel like I’ve failed at my job.”

Closed Starter: @thosemalemuses Plot: Does there need to be one? I mean, let’s just introduce these two. (For Holden and Madeleine)
Madeleine had worked late, as there had been an emergency that needed to be taken care of with one of the animals, and she now found herself at the store much later than she had originally intended. As Maddie hadn’t moved out of her shitty apartment, the store closest to home wasn’t in the best area, and she normally took precautions not to go there when it was late since she was always alone. Despite that, her upbringing, had taught her how to be alert and vigilant. She wouldn’t have even bothered going to the store if she hadn’t absolutely needed some things this evening and this was the most convenient place to go in her route home.
Making the stop a very quick one, only for those essentials, Maddie purchased them, thanking the cashier with one of her token bright smiles before grabbing the bag and heading back out to her car. As she walked, she tripped, losing her grip on her keys and her bag, the contents spilling on the ground. She quickly picked up her keys, and then scrambled to get the toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner in the bag. Why did everything have to run out all at once? She had been so embarrassed, and flustered that she hadn’t even noticed someone else headed in her direction, and as she stood up and made to rush forward, she headed straight into a solid body and dropped her bag again. “Oh God... I’m so sorry!” Her eyes lifted to take in the male’s face, her expression apologetic. “I-I wasn’t paying attention...” Blast it, she always paid better attention.

WIP Folder Tag
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Send me an ask with the title that most intrigues you and I’ll post a little snippet of it or tell you something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Thanks for the tag @missameliep 😊❤️
My WIP folder is a complete mess because I factory reset my phone twice lately (don’t even get me started on that 😓) and I think I lost the outlines of my THM and PM series. I’m using this to reorganize everything, so please bear with me, my very long list and my obsession with organization and lists 😅

Hey, do you have any good book recs? I really value your opinion!! Have you read any of sally rooneys novels cause I’m thinking of given them a go but I’ve heard really mixed reviews
So I’ve been a mess the past year and a half and haven’t really been processing anything that wasn’t non fiction or poetry so this is a messy list but hopefully you can find something on it that sounds appealing. I haven’t read anything of sally rooneys but if you do please let me know if they’re worth a shot
Fiction
The Road to Gundagai by Jackie French - one of my favourite books of all time from one of my favourite authors. brilliant historical fiction you can taste. I’d also recommend:
The Matilda Series by Jackie French - a similar style but different tone. you can pick up anywhere in the series and love it
The Dressmaker by Rosaline Ham - if you’ve watched the movie don’t expect that here. a bit gritty but an interesting deconstruction of trope through character and a look at humanity.
Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel - fair warning its about a pandemic but every second line is way too raw to pass over. also a really interesting style
The Interogation of Ashala Wolf by Ambelin Kwaymullina - best YA, everyone else go home. by an indigenous author which adds a real depth to the world building and texture
The Handmaids Tale by Margret Atwood - I know its so hyped up which, in my snobbery, usually means I’d dodge it but it was so worth reading when I put that behind me, even tho I never got into the show. stylistically brilliant. you feel the compression in the writing.
Please Remember Me by Mari Brady - I haven’t read it in forever but it made me cry at the time which was a fate so.
Sue Barton by Helen Dore Boylston - okay so its sort of a children's series but its also one of the best series of books of all time. I still read them every now and again (idk how you’d find a copy but. worth searching)
The Dry by Jane Harper - wrote the book on suspense and unreliable narration. just delicious writing.
Non fiction
Disney War by James B. Stewart - fascinating account of the business battles at Disney in the 90s. made me hate them but worth reading
Untamed by Glennon Doyle - I have. so many. problems with this book and I could talk about that for hours but I did enjoy it and have recommended it to people
Tomboyland by Melissa Faliveno - a collection of essays on gender, sexuality and childhood, the tree that I had grown as a child marking the girth of years between then and now made me fucking sob. worth reading more than tumblr snippets of it lol
A Brief History of Thought by Luc Ferry - this ones for my nerds. its an intro guide to philosophy and compiles schools of thought in a really accessible and fun way
Mezzanines by Matthew Olzmann - my emotional support poet.
Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe - colonialism is evil and this was really interesting. a good hard look at racism, colonial view points and oppression
From my nightstand (ie. books I’m meaning to read / have started but haven’t finished / don’t yet have fully fledged thoughts on)
The Duke and I by Julia Quinn
The Governess by Wendy Holden
The Women in Black by Madeleine St John - aka The Ladies in Black, not a scifi book as the title might lead you to believe
Little Weirds by Jenny Slate (I’ve been halfway through for like a year i love jenny slate but fuck this one is challenging me)
The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith - I’m a lesbian, Harold
Also I haven’t read these so I can’t recommend them but if anyone wants to buy me Romancing the Beat (how to write kissing books) by Gwen Hayes or The Anthology of Australian Prose Poetry by Cassandra Atherton then please, my love, feel free
#i accidentally deleted this twice so#it took a while sorry lol#i hope something catches your eye! and i'd love your recs if you have any#asks

—Madeleine Holden, “The Trouble with Epigenetics, the Trendy Topic of ‘Inherited Trauma’”
The supernatural presence that haunts 124 Bluestone Road outside of Cincinnati, Ohio, should not be understood as a version of the supernatural presence that haunts Whitley Strieber's cabin in upstate New York. At the same time, however, it is a striking fact about Beloved that it presents itself as a ghost story, that its account of the past takes the form of an encounter with a ghost, a ghost who is, as Valerie Smith has said, “the story of the past embodied.” And if one way to regard this ghost is (along the lines I’ve just suggested) as a figure for the way in which race can make the past present, another way to regard the ghost is as the figure for a certain anxiety about the very idea of race that is being called upon to perform this function. For while races are, no doubt, more real than “visitors,” it isn't quite clear how much more or in what ways they are more real. To what extent, for example, are the races we believe in biological entities? Nothing is more common in American intellectual life today than the denial that racial identity is a biological phenomenon and the denunciation of such a biologism as racial essentialism. The race that antiessentialists believe in is a historical entity, not a biological one. In racial antiessentialism, the effort to imagine an identity that will connect people through history is replaced by the effort to imagine a history that will give people an identity.
If, then, we must not see the ghost in Beloved as a real (albeit biologically exotic) entity (like a visitor), we should not see her either as a figure for a real (and also biologically exotic) entity (like a race). She is a figure instead for a process, for history itself; Beloved is, in this respect, not only a historical but a historicist novel. It is historical in that it's about the historical past; it’s historicist in that—setting out to remember “the disremembered”—it redescribes something we have never known as something we have forgotten and thus makes the historical past a part of our own experience. It’s no accident that the year in which Communion and Beloved were published (1987) is also the year in which the University of California Press series The New Historicism was inaugurated or that the year in which Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize (1988) was the year in which Shakespearean Negotiations—written by the editor of The New Historicism and beginning with the author's announcement of his “desire to speak with the dead”—was also published. The ghost story, the story in which the dead speak, either like Beloved in a voice that's “low and rough” or like Shakespeare through “textual traces,” is the privileged form of the new historicism.
If, in other words, the minimal condition of the historian’s activity is an interest in the past as an object of study, Stephen Greenblatt’s account of the origins of his vocation (“I began with the desire to speak with the dead”) and of the nature of that vocation (“literature professors are salaried, middle-class shamans”) both insist on a relation to the past (he calls it a “link”) that goes beyond that minimal condition, and beyond also (it’s this going beyond that the model of the shaman is meant to indicate) various standard accounts of the continuity between past and present. Greenblatt is not, that is, interested in the kind of continuity offered by the claim that events in the past have caused conditions in the present or in the kind of continuity imagined in the idea that the past is enough like the present that we might learn from the past things that are useful in the present. Indeed, the interest proclaimed here has almost nothing to do with taking the past as an object of knowledge—what he wants is to speak with the dead, “to re-create a conversation with them,” not to find out or explain what they did. And although he himself proclaims this ambition a failed one, from the standpoint of the heightened continuity that the new historicism requires, the terms of failure are even more satisfying than success would be: “Even when I came to understand that in my most intense moments of straining to listen all I could hear was my own voice, even then I did not abandon my desire. It was true that I could hear only my own voice, but my own voice was the voice of the dead.” If what you want is a “link” with the dead that is better achieved by speaking with them than by studying them (which is achieved, that is to say, by understanding studying them as a way of speaking with them), then the discovery that what one hears when one hears the dead speak is actually the sound of one's “own voice” can't really count as a disappointment. “My own voice was the voice of the dead”; the link envisioned in conversation is only made stronger by the discovery that the conversation is with oneself. Continuity is turned into identity.

2. Meaning of name "Liam" and "Emma"
Liam:
Liam's name is the name of a boy of Irish origin meaning "resolute protection".
Liam originated as the nickname of Uilliam, the Irish variant of William. William is an English name from German origin brought to Ireland when the British fled England after the conquest of Norman.
The Irish began to use English names, including William, which led to the development of Uilliam and its short form, Liam.
Liam is the top US boy's name for 2018, joining the elite group of names to top the list. Liam started out as a short form of William but has long stood on his own and for several years has become one of the most popular baby names for boys.
Now it is the fastest-growing Irish name in the United States, first entering the Top 10 in 2012 and before climbing to No. 1, holding No. 2 for four consecutive years.
Emma:
Initially, a short form of the German name beginning with the ermen element meaning "whole" or "universal". It was introduced to England by Emma of Normandy, who was the wife of King Ethelred II (and by him the mother of Edward the Confession) and later King Canute.
After the Norman conquest, this name became popular in England. It was revived in the 18th century, perhaps in part because of a poem by Henry Prior Henry and Emma (1709). In the United States, it ranked third in 1880 (after Mary and Anna were omnipresent).
It declined steadily over the next century, beginning another rise in the 1980s and eventually becoming the most popular name for girls in 2008.
At this time it also experienced similar levels of popularity elsewhere, including the United Kingdom (where it began rising a decade earlier), Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands.
