you know on a lot of my posts that discuss the ending of the magnus archives i get a lot of tags from people asking why the spoilers aren't tagged or that they're upset that they got spoiled for it or people reblogging with comments like "I'm only on episode X !!! What the hell happens?!?!"

part of me is ??? so confused ???? bc this show ended almost 4 years ago ??? i've only recently rejoined tumblr since listening to tma/tmagp so perhaps the rules of engagement have changed, but im only used to adding spoiler tags to things that are recent, like within 1-2 weeks of an episode dropping you're supposed to tag it with spoilers so people have time to catch up, but after that it's up to you to avoid the dash if you aren't caught up yet and don't want spoilers.

i didn't look on here or on any website outside of my twitter thread when i was initially listening as to not be spoiled (did the same thing with malevolent, only looked at my own dash or my tags page when i was listening)

BUT ALSO part of me feels really bad bc i think going into tma blind as fuck is the best way to do it. i just happened to decide to finally listen after seeing someone on tiktok talk about protocol coming back from a hiatus, i had 0 knowledge of tma other than the knowledge that it was an anthology horror series. it was probably one of the best decisions ive made this year. I would have HATED it if i got spoiled for something major.

have the terms of how tagging spoilers changed since i left this site in 2017 and only just recently joined full time again?

This one goes into how all the 2012 boys are strong in their own right (which they are), but for the case of this post, I am just going to be focusing on Leo's part, which is literally him single-handly holding back a giant alin in a giant mech. What do you think about how their overall concept/design/styling has ended up with the shooting star comeback now that we’ve had two weeks of stages? Obviously you liked a lot of the concept photos with the reblogs (they were so good!) so I’m curious if you think the execution of the mv/remaining content stayed at the same level or not.

big fucking mood i think left right is gonna be my top played this year simon made that song for ME! anyways got two asks about shooting star so i'm gonna put a screenshot of the other one here bc they bring up a point i wanna touch on also:

firstly: obvs they have an extremely talented creative director working for them and i suspect that their stylist/designer is probably either japanese or korean japanese, bc there's a SUPER strong early 00s harajuku/lisa frank thread in the visuals that not really any other kpop group has managed to catch in quite the same way and that is VERY authentic to the time. and i think it does really help that their executive producer (of the company and of their music) was a kid in the 00s AND was an active idol in the early 10s, so he probably has a good eye for what they're looking for visually and/or the understanding to be able to hire and communicate with a person who does. and they allocated their reasources really smartly with the mv, they put most of their emphasis on the styling and on the editing, bc a lot of what makes mvs and just video content from the 00s is the experimentation with vfx/cgi/'futuristic' visuals bc it was all new tech at the time. the nice thing about the 20yr nostalgia cycle is now all the effects that editors and directors thought they were doing in 2001 can actually be achieved much easier and in better fidelity than anyone could have dreamed. they utilize a lot of different camera angles and effects to give each of the sets more punch, including a lot of practical effects, like the mirrored buildings and all the lighting.

i do think the mv is the best part of the cb, bc it really is SO well done; i wish they had used more of the more 'out there' outfits for the music show stages, but i think it was probably a fair assessment to tone it back a little for kr promotions bc the gp tends not to react as well to stuff that's on the ''weirder'' end of fashion, esp for women. that being said i don't actually think any of the outfits from the stages were a disappointment either, they have all been extremely good, just not as ostentatious as we saw in the mv. i am VERY glad that we got a stage with the blue wigs though, bc that was one of my fave looks.

Teen Wolf is still in progress alongside Naruto, but I'm getting closer to the end - we've got four episodes left in Season 5 (part 2), and then we're moving on to Season 6!

Everyone who told you to stop watching after Season 3 was probably right, or at least that's the impression I'm getting so far - I obviously haven't seen S6 yet, and I'm happy to be going into it not knowing anything about it, but I haven't enjoyed S4 and S5 the way I wish I could have, and that makes me doubtful about whether S6 can course-correct in a way that satisfies me. But hope springs eternal - I always go into new seasons optimistically; I was really enjoying the first couple episodes of S5 before it started to lose me, so I'll start S6 with the same open-mindedness.

My Teen Wolf watch actually started a looong time ago - I started watching back in 2015 (never as it was airing, though; I always just watched it on DVD) and got hooked partway through S1. I watched the first three seasons all in a row and was totally in love with it, but the very end of 3B (*cough*allison*cough*) made me so angry that I stopped watching for like two and a half years. Then I came back and watched S4...and it was so terrible that I stopped watching again for another three years. And now...I am finally finishing. XD

There is a LOT of Teen Wolf on my blog; it was my main fannish interest for years even when I wasn't actively watching new episodes, and it's still what I consider one of my "big" fandoms, despite the fact that I've been running around in Merlin and Naruto-land lately. My general Teen Wolf tag is (predictably) "teen wolf", and then I also use "pan watches teen wolf" for thoughts about episodes I'm in the process of watching (currently working on one of those posts right now).

There will likely be many more Teen Wolf posts here as I work my way through the end of S5 and all of S6, and I'd be totally happy to talk about it anytime! I do find it a lot easier to reply to asks or reblog conversation threads back and forth than use the tumblr messaging function - I don't have a problem with dms or anything like that, it's just that the messaging window is SO tiny and I have a much easier time with longer-form/asynchronous communication (things like Discord servers give me hives, and I have similar trouble with texting, so. I guess I am just Old. XD )

Okay one thing I really really like about heartstopper are the hugs. Like every single hug looks genuine and close and real, not stiff and awkward, and EVERYONE hugs. Guys hug. Girls hug. Boys and girls hug. Partners hug. Parents and kids hug. Siblings hug. And they always give hugs when they’re needed and they all cling to each other like they’re afraid to let go or like they need the other person and…. It makes me really happy

I don't want to respond to this directly in a reblog bc it doesn't really have to do with the content of the rest of the post (which is great, by the way! I'm really happy that things are going well on an artistic side and your work is lovely!) but this aside has me feeling some kind of way.

I don't think it's a fair characterisation to say the mechanisms 'misinterpreted' the universe of Doctor Carmilla, because it isn't really the same universe. The continuity between Doctor Carmilla & The Mechanisms and The Mechanisms as a standalone band seems to me to really be legacy only, and to the degree that Carmilla is mentioned in-universe it's an acknowledgement of the band's origins, not an attempt to write a Carmilla story. Seems to me like it wouldn't be appropriate for the Mechanisms to write stories about Doctor Carmilla and the universe Maki developed in her absence, nor would it be fair to pretend Maki never existed or that Carmilla wasn't deeply involved in the foundations of the Mechanisms universe.

like if you approach the Mechanisms and Doctor Carmilla as one unified story led by Maki then sure, it comes across like the Mechanisms misinterpreted ideas and dropped threads. But that's...not what it is? They're two separate stories with a common root. Maki hasn't been involved in writing with the Mechanisms since 2011 and the band finished in 2020 - in almost a decade with different people writing, a good number of whom weren't even involved with the Doctor Carmilla era of the Mechanisms, yeah, it isn't the same entity and I don't think that the Mechs have ever acted like it's meant to be? Doctor Carmilla is Doctor Carmilla and the Mechanisms are the Mechanisms and they exist in separate universes with some crossover points - that seems to me to be the best approach?

Like, it would be valid to say that the Mechanisms misinterpreted Carmilla's universe and character if they had ever written stories about Carmilla or about the ideas Maki had for her story. but they.... haven't? ever really done that? They've written stories featuring Carmilla, which is really kind of an acknowledgement that the band started with Maki, but only really in apocrypha or performing songs developed with Maki as far as I can tell? and beyond that when they've introduced new characters or story elements they've avoided going back over ground that would mean reinvolving Carmilla without Maki's input. bc from what I've seen they're pretty careful about not writing stories About Other People's Characters without getting substantial input and signoff from those people.

I don't really know the precise circumstances in which Doctor Carmilla and the Mechanisms became two separate entities - that's a wee bit before my time - but my impression was that nobody pushed anybody out or was cut out, that it was all pretty amicable, and that the Mechanisms wanted to perform more and Maki was going in more of a solo direction so they went on performing separately. I have no idea if that's a correct impression (and I'm happy to be corrected if not) but either way it's not abandoning a character to carry on without them when the person who played them is no longer involved, and it's not misinterpreting or abandoning an idea to build your own thing on the foundation it's set. I like both the universe Maki's made for Doctor Carmilla and the universe the Mechanisms made for their stories, they don't need to be in competition and there doesn't need to be One True Correct Canon, especially since Maki has continued making really great work on Doctor Carmilla's story without the Mechanisms. They can and should just be separate entities, that's allowed.

(and this isn't a go at you, btw, this is just like I've heard this take a few times and it seems like a pretty uncharitable interpretation of how creativity works. The Mechanisms are allowed creative ownership over their own universe - they were working with Doctor Carmilla for under a year and they've been developing stories together for the better part of a decade and it seems like a pretty unfair approach to all involved to cast that as a shadow of Doctor Carmilla's universe as if the only way you're allowed to keep using the same band name is if you follow exactly the preordained narrative of someone who hasn't been part of the band for years. Doctor Carmilla as a story and a character has certainly changed and developed over time, musically and narratively, and that's good! That's as it should be! so I don't know why the Mechanisms' narrative universe not being the same as it was when they were ...And The Mechanisms is sometimes framed as a bastardisation of Maki's work rather than like. an evolution and development of their own creative voice and stories)

Like. Assuming that we agree that it's good that the Mechanisms existed post separating from Carmilla and went on to make new music and write new stories, how would that do this in a way that wasn't a 'misinterpretation' and/or 'abandonment' of Carmilla's story? Either you have to try and tell Carmilla's story, which would be inevitably a 'misinterpretation' because. They're different people. And it would be pretty inappropriate to try and tell the same story as Maki wanted to tell without her and potentially have two versions of the same story competing. Or you do what the Mechs did in practise, and largely leave Carmilla's story and the surrounding universe for its creator to play with and go ahead and make your own thing with its own universe and rules that won't impact on the story they obviously want to build for their own character and world. You can characterise that as 'abandonment' but I'm not sure what the better option is then, other than just Nobody Who Has Ever Made Anything Involving Doctor Carmilla Can Ever Do Anything With The Characters They Made For That. like. It seems like the only alternative to keep creating with those characters (which, again, people developed as onstage personas for themselves) that couldn't be called a misinterpretation or an abandonment of Maki's original vision is like, to only ever do anything with Maki in charge, which is a pretty big limitation to put on a band, especially if I'm right in my understanding that they parted ways because Maki wanted to take a different approach to her work that didn't heavily involve the Mechanisms, so would she even have had the time, capacity or interest to lead on a whole other project alongside her own work back in 2011? When people have this take that the Mechanisms were somehow disrespectful of Maki's story by not just telling Maki's story and instead making their own thing, I just have to ask like what exactly is the alternative version where the Mechanisms make their own creative work with their own creative voice in a way that isn't either reinterpreting or moving away from the Doctor Carmilla story?????

I doubt this will actually reach anybody, but I figure it's worth a try.

My sweet partner has recently come out as trans and is dealing with a lot of gender dysphoria bc of her clothes (amongst other things). I've been busting my butt to buy her a new wardrobe filled with beautiful things that make her get some of that sweet, sweet gender euphoria.

We're about $325 away from getting everything (Including shoes and pajamas!) and every little thing helps. Including reblogs. I don't really like asking anyone for anything, but seeing her feel good in clothes that make her feel like she's expressing herself in the best way is really important to me. Ok so I thought I'd put together some horror stories from my time as a babymetal fan bc of how drastic the shift in the fandom has been the past year or so. For context I got into babymetal in like june of 2014 (all 3 girls were still underage at the time, I was 22; when I first got into them I thought I would be considered an older fan lmao the naivete, the innocence of new fan me wow I know now I'm not at all in the older half of the fandom esp considering I was born the same decade as su and moa), and I made this blog in I think may of 2015.

I've had people say I should compile men being gross into a post and I just couldn't do that out of fear for my own mental health but this will be pretty close. These are all my experiences with this fandom over the years; I'm definitely missing some but what I do remember should do well to cover most of how this fandom used to be vs now. It's gonna be a lot and tw for men being gross about minors.

Back in my first year or so of this blog I on multiple occasions got dms from men asking to be friends. At the time my bio only said my name and my pronouns. I've always been cautious of dms so I'd ask their age and every single one was considerably older than me. I wouldn't usually answer after that bc no thanks but they would generally try to continue convos til I blocked. The only one I still had was this one

After I put my age in my bio, which was 23 at the time, I never got a dm like that again; take from that what you will. But if you're young please be wary of this hell fandom even now. And if you're an older fan and esp an older male fan reading this, don't dm people trying to be friends. I was over 18 and it still creeped me out to no end.

One of my real first men in this fandom are disgusting moments was a blog back in like 2015 or 2016 who I had some contact with due to common interests; he was a huge yui stan and made bm content. He was like 28 or 29 at the time and I eventually noticed he would tag idols, mostly kpop girls, by their body parts (legs, butt, etc) which is disgusting enough as it is but then I saw him do the same for literal minors, like tzuyu from twice. I messaged him asking what the hell he was doing objectifying women but also actual children and he blocked me lmao. He later unblocked me to let me know that's just how he tagged things and it was my fault he had anxiety and then he blocked me again.

Back before the tumblr purge this fandom was repulsive to a degree I cannot even begin to describe. Someone would reblog something from me, I'd go to their blog and it would be underage jpop idols and japanese p*rn all the way down. I even stumbled upon a man editing underage su into p*rn gifs. Obviously no proof of that but I did go find my initial reaction to it

The number of times I'd get a follow from someone then go to their blog and it would be as mentioned above or their bio would be the most misogynistic trash I'd ever read was staggering. I genuinely considered giving up and deleting this blog so many times bc i felt oberwhelmed and outnumbered by these gross old dudes; and so the fact that this fandom has evolved into a bunch of chaotic wlw?? Amazing, I could cry.

Fun phenomenon of women running bm blogs was men sending messages asking if we liked babymetal. No joke. I think this happened to me two or three times but I spoke w other female creators at the time and it had happened to them as well. My entire blog is babymetal, and yet???

He said the weird guy idk bc he sent some random ass messages vaguely insulting me and when I responded coldly, he acted confused so I said you're some guy idk, hence the above message starting as such. Also that pic and the one up above that has my current pfp bc I just took those screenshots. Like I said I typically blocked weird dms but I guess these passed me by so I still had the messages.

Most people know the sub reddit is the worst and don't need me to tell you but it's a hellscape and I highly recommend avoiding it. A short list of things I've had to see as a result of going there: men discussing at length kano and momoko's appearances and how they look in costume vs in normal clothes. Men discussing at length the hope that the girls would marry men who aren't Japanese, a thread that was from when all 3 girls were underage. They aren't gonna marry you dude they're really not.

The insulting of billie Eilish, a 17 year old at the time, was horrible too. Su and moa got to meet her, something they were extremely excited for, and they posted a pic; the comments were disgusting as you can imagine. The yui rumors were terrible too, fatshaming, slutshaming etc all based on nothing. Some man saying the rumors about yui leaving bc, no joke this was a real rumor, she "got too fat" couldn't be true bc "look at saya." Saya being a barely 18 yo back up dancer who covered the third spot after yui left but before the avengers. Not to mention the upskirt shots from when they were minors, the constant editing of their faces onto explicit photoshoots etc. I remember being a new fan looking for a su pic on google and being horrified at the fact that one of the top suggested results after her name was “bikini;” she was 16 at the time. Also, the uptick in massively creepy posts and messages sent to bm blogs as each girl, but esp moa and yui, approached 18 was disgusting.

Now for some personal nonsense. A big reason why I haven't touched my youtube channel in months is bc I got tired of dealing with the men of this fandom. I poke fun at metal and get told I deserve to die. I say ped*philes and creepy men are gross and get a swarm of middle aged men cursing at me. Had a guy cry about how men are shamed for liking bm and then he turned around and said some gross shit about wlw. Had a guy call me racist for liking a band he also likes (and despite him having no way of knowing my own race) and tell me the babymetal fandom doesn't need my kpop feminist bullshit, which is honestly a great description and I thought about putting it in my yt about lmao. Had a middle aged man unironically say he'd never seen a man be creepy towards bm but fans su and moa's ages calling them hot was creepy. The disillusionment....the level of unawareness is astounding. If you want to see screenshots of some of these comments they are fairly recent in my don't mind me tag; I don't want to see them anymore tho bc they're infuriating so I'm not going to look at them to post here.

Essentially I haven't looked at my channel since may bc men are exhausting and rude and refuse to examine the fandoms they're a part of no matter what. They're told by a woman of the fandom that she's had bad experiences personally and they all start crying about how it's either a lie bc they haven't seen it or unimportant. I did stop reading comments in may and I will never read another one again probably as a result of this shit. Trash men being trash are not worth my time and I refuse to give them anymore of it. I do plan on making more videos tho and let my ~feminist kpop bullshit~ live in their minds rent free.

I will also continue to make fun of metal and the creepy men in this fandom bc it's important and I'm a spiteful asshole who likes disrupting these dudes perfect bubble of a fandom. It genuinely brings me so much joy seeing all the new fans recently (which sidenote if you got into them recently I am kinda curious as to how you found them; I've gotten tons of new followers and considering how inactive they are rn I'm curious). People sending messages about how they finally feel like they belong or that they have a safe space....like I don't even know what to say and I never feel like my responses fully convey how genuinely wonderful that is and how thrilled I am that this is where we're at now and I have had at least some part in it. As this post shows, my experiences have been negative for the most part so the shift recently is such a relief I cannot even begin to explain my gratitude.

So to anyone who read all of this and hasn't disintegrated from the male bullshit, thank you. Keep being yourself and fighting for your place in this fandom, esp if you're a young woman; keep making fun of the creeps and keep making wlw memes!! Babymetal's music is in such a huge way meant for girls and to see more and more finding their way to this previously hellish beyond belief fandom is incredible.

Okay so here's a twitter thread with a ton of the compiled court case info on the "bad art friend" situation and i think its really important bc people clearly have only read the NYT article, which has literally multiple proven lies in it, given by the person (Larson) who also lied in court.

Warning for ableist use of the word narcissist. But if you're interested in looking to begin with you've probably seen the first part of the story, which also made liberal use of ableist language like that.

Actually I think that is a key thing here, a reason why so many people were easily tricked into hating a woman who donated a kidney for daring to call out someone for plagiarizing her work. The pop science, armchair style "definition" of narcissist is flexible, and once applied to someone makes a bunch of people decide they are The True Enemy.

So this woman wants support during an invasive surgery, reaches out to friends, and she is an Evil No Good Embarrassing person. Bc someone described her as a narcissist. Bc someone described her as needy, talked about her rough childhood, talked about how she had trauma.

The other woman (who lies throughout this whole situation, seemingly to everyone) is described as popular, well-liked and coming from a well off family. So she's trusted for those reasons, and because she didn't have the label narcissist applied to her

Even in this link, with all the evidence applied against Larson, the biggest label thrown here time and time again is narcissistic. Some people only seem to believe that Larson has done something wrong AFTER the pop science "definition" of narcissism has been applied to her.

I'm still so tired of discussions of transphobia and trans experiences being shuffled into "transfemme" and "transmasc" because neither neatly describe my transition goals or my experiences, and I know they don't describe everybody else's either.

I know these words are useful to some people, and good for them! I'm just frustrated bc its being framed like its good for ALL of us.

And it feels like every so often the trans community like reinvents new words that some people will use to ask "what's in your pants" without asking it, and ask everybody to shuffle along and use it in discourse where we will either 1. Present this to cis people as The Options That Exist or 2. Decide who Truly Hurts (it is always the person who is speaking at the time, never anyone else w a slightly different experience)

I'm trans, I'm nb, I'm tired and I wish everyone would stop trying to sort me into 2 boxes (even if you've made the boxes bigger this time or put a new coat of paint)
