A mess of my unorganized, tinhatty ramblings about Taron and Richard and sexuality, under the cut...

Ok so the two questions I’ve been asked to address are whether I think Taron and Richard really hooked up or got together in some way, and whether I think Taron is queer, and I think the answer to both is yes. Taron has a lot of very close male friends. He is very very affectionate with them and has mentioned this many many times. He loves male affection, he loves a bromance, etc. He loves this talking point. Another talking point he loved during the press tour for Rocketman was that mutual friends of his and Richard’s had been “trying to set them up for years.” Ok, two things to that point. Whichever friends these were, they almost certainly knew that Richard is not straight, and secondly, I have never heard of two grown men whose friends wanted to “set them up” unless they wanted to set them up. Which I think is what they actually meant.

Taron has also talked about how he had a sexuality crisis as an adolescent. He had really bad anxiety and some of it, he thought, came from thinking he was gay. He says he went to therapy, and this therapist convinced him he wasn’t gay, he was just anxious. He tells this story so cavalierly that it’s almost a little shocking, in retrospect. Did he get inadvertently put through some sort of low-impact gay conversion therapy? Maybe. Whatever this therapist told him, he made it work in his head well enough, for a while. He found theatre. He found dressing up and getting attention for something he loved. He still has these very intense best friendships with the boys from Aberystwyth, one of whom I remain convinced he was in love with, and was in love with him. He eventually got movie roles, and on one of his movies, he met his girlfriend. He calls her his partner, which I know is a British thing, but somehow coming from him makes it sound as queer as I believe they are, so I love it.

So, this brings us to Rocketman. Taron has been effusive, glowing, adoring, enraptured, enamored and in every possible way ass over teakettle in love with Richard since they met. He like lost his mind a little bit...or found it. I think the process of making this movie took a lot out of both him and Richard, and changed them in various ways, permanently. 

I think they hooked up probably very early on. I think it became part of the process for him, and he convinced himself it was helping him build his character, really feel like Elton. I think they had a lot of drunken, messy nights. I think he either explained it to his girlfriend, or just told her about it, and she tolerated it during the filming, but I totally think she knew. Richard’s girlfriend at the time was, eh, whatever, (sorry, I don’t know anything about her honestly and she seems like a non-starter in his life, eek. Sorry sorry.) and I think they just...did stuff. I can’t speculate on specific acts because that’s what the fanfic is for. But they fooled around, and they enjoyed themselves. No one ever talks about what goes on on film sets, so they knew they were safe, no matter how much they maybe bled over. It worked, and the results for the film.....I mean fuck.

Absolutely this went on through the time Richard wrapped— Taron’s insta post from Richard’s last day is extremely telling, imo. He is being funny, but he’s also guarding his true feelings under the joke of how much he can’t stand him. Oh, because, that’s right, Taron caught fucking feelings. Surprise surprise. 

So, Richard wrapped, and I think he left for a minute and then came back to London. They went out the night before the Carpool Karaoke filming and got “blind drunk” (Taron’s own words) and something definitely went down that night because they were...how they were. 

You can just look at Richard’s reactions when Taron tells him he loves him, or how Taron calls him “old fruit.” They’re so fucking cute but they’re also way way over the top in that “heh heh we’ve kind of been fucking and now we have to remember how to act like best buds* again and I hope this isn’t going to get awkward later on” kind of way. They overdo* it, but it plays great for the show. The looks between them are genuine, but if you look carefully you can see Richard restrain, just a bit more than Taron.

Richard went right back to the US after this thing was done.

Taron wrapped the film. 

At some point within literally 2-3 days, two unbelievable things happened:

Taron broke up with Emily, and Richard met and somehow instantly became attached at the hip with Brandon.

Taron had a gay crisis when he was 13 and he had another one when he was about to turn 29. I am sure of it. He had fallen for Richard, and didn’t know any other way to handle it than to panic, dump his girlfriend and shoot his shot. 

Taron and Richard went to this weird Land Rover launch event thing in late November, literally looking like a couple. Taron had blown up his life and shaved his head. They had a weird energy between them— my theory is Taron tried to tell him at least some of this that night, and it backfired. Richard was either committed to this thing with Brandon, or just didn’t want to try or even think about dating Taron like that. They had fun, and Richard loves him, but “not in that way, mate.”

Sometime around Christmas, Elton and David invited them—Taron and Richard—over to dinner. I think this was some kind of Elton ambush. Richard had a boyfriend but it was the two of them who got invited — and they thought this was some kind of big holiday dinner party but it was just them, and two other gay couples in their 50’s, 60’s or 70’s. I think Elton wanted to make them see what was right there if they wanted it, or at the very least give them the Big Talk, if there was anything left unsaid, about life, and living it, and how to be happy and avoid cocaine. 

They didn’t get together any more, I don’t think. Richard didn’t come out but he didn’t go back in, either. He went on holiday with Brandon, and Taron had what I think of as his sad gay winter. He might have hooked up with other people, I have no idea. At some point he took out Elton’s earring, and then he got back with Emily.

By May, when he and Richard saw each other again in New York, enough time had passed that they had a beautiful, bittersweet comfort between them, imo.

there are a lot of feelings there. Richard doesn’t look like this with, like, anyone. also they’re drunk. 

now they’re just messy and wasted but something went down later because wow 

the Met Gala was my last big tinhatty night for them, I guess. I have seen somewhere that B might have been there at the afterparties? idk man but they were hanging out with some party kinda people and doing some party kinda stuff so anything could have happened to leave Taron looking like that. ***I was informed that he was not there and was in fact having a small fit and unfollowing Richard on instagram while this event and these photos were unfolding, so. yeah. 👀***

Then the film came out...the rest is history. Taron will still take a loving jab at Richard in an insta comment occasionally. I think it’s just his little way of dealing with that soft sting that hasn’t quite gone away. Richard probably never sees them. But if you ask Taron about Richard one day in many years he will still probably call him one of my very best friends.

*This kind of overkill of being best friends became Taron’s defense mechanism for the entire rest of the press tour. He proclaimed his love for Richard at every possible turn. He asked him to marry him. He told fans he’s at the front of the queue. He called him his best friend over and over. He was making sure, in every public place, that Richard knew that Taron still loved him regardless and there were no hard feelings for what happened between them and there never will be.

In the name of research, they fall into a YouTube-sized hole and end up watching an embarrassingly old episode of Hannah Montana featuring, frankly, three barely familiar children. Richard casts it from his phone up onto the big TV, and Taron squeezes in next to him on the sofa, despite its vastness, leaning forward, open-mouthed, like he’s completely gripped by this Disney disaster. He is absolutely charmed.

“Your little sister is marrying that?” he says, with such a smile.

“The Queen in the North can do as she likes,” Richard retorts, stressing an accent. Then: “I can’t imagine Soph marrying for anything less than love.” He swallows. “The kind that really matters, anyway.”

Taron is quiet for a moment, watching the screen. “She’s 23?”

“Mmm,” he says, thinking about how dumb he was at that age. Hungry, ready for anything. Fucking girls exclusively because that’s what he knew. What he thought he knew.

Unhappy.

“It’s Sophie’s world and we just live in it,” Richard says absently, thumbing through YouTube now to set up a better queue: gig clips, JONAS, awkward boyish interviews.

“You stayed close, huh?” Taron says, almost to himself.

“We all did,” Richard shrugs. “Practically grew up together. Came of age.”

He and Kit and Alfie, of course, were always thickest. Same age, same path. Alfie a little more prepared, having witnessed his sister’s up-and-downfall, but Richard and Kit trying to forge a shortcut through the brush, hacking at the unknown until it resembled something familiar.

Richard and Kit—

“Mm,” Taron says, stretching out and then shifting on the couch — shifting to lie on his back, his head against Richard’s thigh. A warm glow. “Lucky,” he says softly. “Me and Colin text sometimes, but— I don’t keep up with anyone, really.”

Something safe in that, Richard thinks. And something lonely. “You’ll keep up with me now,” he says, resolute.

Taron looks up at him, and his eyes are so blue, so open. Richard’s heart seizes just a little, just enough.

fandoms: well, this is a loaded question. How far back do we wanna go? I started with the House, M.D. fandom in 2006 (I’m old). I started out shipping House/Cameron and then quickly became a House/Wilson shipper and never looked back. After that, my next fandom was Harry Potter, and I was only ever a diehard Drarry shipper. Took a loooong break from writing after that, and that’s when I got into the Rocketman fandom. I started out writing strictly Rocketman fics but moved onto Madderton and stayed there, mostly. I haven’t written in a while, though!

I also have one isolated fic from Forrest Gump that I wrote in like 2010 lmao. It’s horrible and I have no explanation.

two-shot?: Does this mean, like, a series? I did several House series back in the day that were relatively popular and an HP one, but nothing in the Madderton fandom.

most popular multi-chapter fic: My first piece of writing for the Rocketman fandom was a one-shot called “I’m not a present for your friends to open” and I got a lot of great feedback on it, so I did another chapter, then another...anyways it’s got 18 chapters and is still unfinished lol but it’s probably my most popular fic to date. When I met one of my friends in the fandom, she actually said “omg you’re the one who writes that, I can’t believe that’s you” and I was thrilled about that lol. I do have a really popular Madderton multi-chap though, called Strong and Broken. Also unfinished!

actual worst part of writing: making the words jump from my brain to the page...or finding the time to actually write. I spend a lot of time planning and writing in my head, but making them actually sit on the page somewhere is hard for me. Finding time to write is also hard. After work, my brain is often so fried that I just want to stare at a screen for a few hours before going to sleep, and writing takes more effort than that.

how you choose your titles: either lyrics, or isolated lines from poems.

do you outline: Nope. It would probably make me a better writer, but so much of what I write is just me pouring things out when I finally get the inspiration. It either flows, or it doesn’t. I should really practice outlining, though.

ideas you probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice: I used to carry around a little notebook with ideas, ha. Nothing I’d want to discuss because hey, maybe I will develop it!

callouts @ me: Nothing I can think of, I think? The most I can think of is that people seem to have a real problem with RPF in general, which I can partially understand. It was something I never got until I was in it, but I do my best to be respectful of them. I would never send my work to them, or bash the real people in their lives. Everything I come up with is very, hey I’d love this to happen but it’s just me having fun. I did once see a few people on Taron stan twitter mocking Madderton fics, and they described the plotline of one of my stories while mocking it. My feelings were hurt but then I got a giggle.

best writing traits: hmm...I genuinely don’t know. I like to think I’m good at writing emotion and tapping into that, but I’m not sure.

spicy tangential opinion: I don’t like self-insert fic. It’s the proverbial line in terms of RPF for me. That’s just me, though, do what you like. :p

Just to add my two cents for all people who feel free to criticise (even bash) RPF shippers. 

We just watched and celebrated a movie that takes a lot of creative liberty in showing various people’s real lives, and the person at the centre of this partially fictional creation was absolutely in on it. 

There are people saying that the portrayal of his parents was a bit too unfavourable and untrue, and that other characters were painted in a worse light than was truthful, too. 

In other bio-pics - those that try to appear more realistic and do not have the “this is a musical fantasy” disclaimer - real people get outright vilified, facts are twisted in order to tell a story that the audience then take at face value and believe that this is what really happened. And filmmakers don’t really seem to worry if that perceived reality includes proper character assassination. 

Yet there are people who not only put these fics on the same level but actually above biographical films in terms of the harm they do. Just because they include some made-up romance and sex. Just think about that for a moment. Actually think about that. What is worse? Painting a real person as a villain in a seemingly realistic film for a huge audience, or writing them as gay/bi in a purely fictional story for a niche audience who understands that this is pure fabrication?

Yeah. 

Im sorry about the hate you're getting. makes me angry when people shit on other people for having different opinions. I personally dont ship real people because it's just a bit odd to me, but as long as you're not harassing taron or Richard and it's just for us, who cares if you ship madderton? You just do you

2 - Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

Right now I’m really not in the Rocketman RPF fandom to the extent that I’ve created fanworks for it, but I’ve been reading some of the Madderton stories.  While I do enjoy them, I personally see Taron and Richard as a BroTP, and am more inclined to ship Taron with Dexter Fletcher or Giles Martin, or going back to Kingsman, Taron and Colin (Taron and Mark are definitely BroTP).  I think it’s more my preference for a significant age gap in my ships and the three years between Taron and Richard doesn’t do it for me.

3 - Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?

Yes, but not in my current fandom.  Way back in my White Collar days, there was a very vocally negative crowd surrounding a female character introduced in the second season that had been clearly set up as a love interest.  There were a lot of people who hated her because of this, also because in real life, she was married and had a child with a male actor who had a very intense following.  She was also extremely thin and had lost her baby weight very easily.  She became a target of terrible vitriol in the fandom and the haters would come onto my journal (back in my LJ days) and demand I show them her value.  I told them to go spit and severed the connection.

19 - What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

Hate is too strong of a word.  It’s not a fandom that really believes in leaving comments.  I have seen so many fics with kudos counts in the hundreds and barely a dozen comments.  But that being said, the people who do regularly leave comments are lovely and wonderful and I cherish every one of them
