A particularly rough stretch of road had the carriage bouncing this way and that, effectively awakening the princess who had dozed off in an effort to get some rest before arriving in the unfamiliar city. While normally the prince would accompany her on a visit such as this, there had been pressing issues that had kept him at home and so she found herself rather lonely on the ride out. Still, she found herself cultivating an excited ball of nerves in her stomach -- she hadn’t experienced many towns without the company of other royals, what if she wasn’t enough? What if the villagers found her too common for their liking and never accepted her as their princess? 

However, before her thoughts could get too out of control, the carriage came to a rather abrupt stop as they entered the town borders. After a brief discussion with the few guards who’d joined her, she decided to walk the rest of the way and see the town as the villagers did, much to the chagrin of her men. She would not be swayed by their objections and quickly removed herself from the carriage and started off down the dirt road, leaving them to scramble after her. 

Thankful that she had worn clothes suited for traveling, she marveled at the small houses and fields she passed by. Nostalgia soon enough overcame her and as she entered the busier part of town, she began to mistake the villagers for people she’d grown up with. Stifling a giggle, she murmured her observations to the guard at her side as she told him anecdotes from her time before the castle. Passing by a woman, Cinderella found herself looking behind her as she was struck with a feeling of such familiarness that couldn’t be solely attributed to the sepia toned glasses she was currently sporting. Unable to stop herself and without thinking of the consequences of her actions, she called out to the woman as her voice took on an incredulous tone. 

“Step-mother?”

TO HEAR MY MUSE RIDICULOUSLY DRUNK TO YOURS.

SHE OUGHT to have known better. Granted the wine, which she couldn’t say she drank of very often, it took only two glasses for her eyes to begin to look bright-eyed; more so than usual. How her face grew flushed across her nose and cheeks; and for a brief moment the woman is granted the look of a Queen who is both wistful and child-like. 

“…….Why?” It was one last attempt at trying to see if there was any goodness to be found in Madam Tremaine towards her that might cause her and the others to lighten her sentence. A drink with an elevated step-daughter whom she had abused, all but welcoming her into her palace with finery that outmatched her own. Yet Ella remained Ella. 

“..Why could we not have been family, Stepmother. “ Her chuckle is oddly bitter, painted lips curving against the dip of her glass. “You so hated that term for me to call you, insisted I call you Madam but you are still my stepmother. I do not use it to mock you, you see. But I prefer honesty , something of which you have never given me – there are many things you have never given me, only one, and that is nothing. “ Her smile is hazy at best, eyes bright, but there is no betraying of moisture, no tears, no sniveling or pleading for affection. 

“Was it my Father? I imagine some of his words you might have heard, somehow. Surely – you all but implied it. And – and how my mother’s things were slowly being placed away, if not for my taking of them. If we had been happier would we be different, now, you think? Or would you still look at me with such hatred in your eyes? Scorn for one you sought to break as you yourself are broken?”

“You underestimated me, my family – everything. You did cruel, terrible things to me, and I cannot help but wonder would you have left me in that attic to rot? But – oh, you see, Stepmother, I forgive you. I forgive you for everything. You failed, you see. Failed utterly. For in forgiveness, we break free of our bitterness, if you would believe it. “ A laugh, forced, and her hand reaches for her wrist, capturing it in a gently firm grip.

Those hazy, golden-brown eyes of hers and her mother’s stare at her, smiling somewhat sleepily, somewhat lost. 

“I wanted so very much for this to work, you see. For you to shed that skin and reveal something beyond how much you love your daughters to me; so that I might lighten your sentence, for in mercy as well, there is not weakness. And I suppose, that is what saddens me most, among so many other things, no – “ A laugh again. “That is a lie, it is only one thing that saddens me, among many. So, so many Stepmother…that I could not show you a life of kindness and happiness that we could have had.” 

She does not cry. Will not cry.

“Do you think, in some time, we might have all been happy? That you might have loved me and Father – if circumstances were kinder? That we may have been as neighbors, somehow? Still happy with the one whom you so utterly loved? I shall never see you again, Lady Eleanor, and all I can think to tell you is…if it is true, and you have the slightest thought of it – …before you go. Before you leave and never cross paths with me again . . “

Her smile is brave, yet that brief flash of pain is not unnoticed, even as her voice, hazy yet strong, says a single phrase, as if saying goodbye.

“I would have loved you, you know. I would have loved.”
