Who's Who In The DC Universe #1: Arkham Asylum, Atari Force, Atlantis
Arkham Asylum by Steve Bissette & John Totleben
Located on a wooded acre of land just north of Gotham City
Founded in 1921 by Dr. Amadeus Arkham, a vigorous social reformer, on land left to him by his mother
Amadeus’s mother suffered from mental illness
The asylum was the first facility of its kind in Gotham
Amadeus transformed his ancestral home into an asylum and staffed it with some of the most prominent psychologists and physicians of the time.
One of Arkham’s first inmates was “Mad Dog” Martin Hawkins, who had been found not guilty by reason of insanity in the murders of Arkham’s wife and infant daughters.
Dr. Arkham treated Hawkins with “great concern and compassion”, right up to Hawkin’s accidental electrocution two months after his incarceration.
In 1929, 6 days after the legendary stock crash, Dr. Arkham went berserk and was arrested when he attempted to electrocute his stockbroker. Amadeus wasn’t happy over losing his entire fortune in the crash.
Amadeus was committed to Arkham Asylum. He spent the remainder of his days carving indecipherable inscriptions on the floor of his cell while singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”.
Amadeus passed away in his sleep on April 7, 1963.
The Asylum wen through a series of state-appointed administrators after Amadeus’s incarceration.
The most recent was Dr. Byron Blaine, who has held the position since his predecessor was taken captive and replaced by Professor Achilles Milo, one of the Asylum’s inmates.
Other notable inmates include Two-Face, the Floronic Man, the Mad Hatter, Clayface III, Maxie Zeus, and the Joker.
Arkham Asylum debuted in the Batman comics in 1974 but has quickly become a foundational aspect of the Batman mythos. Hugo Strange, Harley Quinn, and Scarecrow all worked at Arkham Asylum in the various continuities. Numerous important storylines have taken place at Arkham, including the kickoff of Knightfall when Bane released the inmates to exhaust Batman.
I haven’t read Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum since it came out in 1989 but I think I remember the writer referencing Amadeus’s backstory. I seem to remember Mad Dog’s electrocution wasn’t so accidental after all. The Who’s Who entry (which pre-dates Morrison’s story by 4/5 years hints about the true nature of Mad Dog’s death when Amadeus attempts to electrocute his stockbroker). I don’t blame Amadeus, no one should be tasked to care for his wife and infant daughter’s murderer.
Amadeus played a background role in the Batman Arkham games when Quincy Sharpe, the Asylum’s current administrator, becomes convinced he is the reincarnation of Amadeus Arkham.
Arkham Asylum appears in all the various Bat Family titles and crossover media (cartoons, movies, video games). Notable storylines include the Arkham Asylum GN by Grant Morrison and Arkham Asylum: Living Hell. “Living Hell” isn’t as famous as Morrison’s graphic novel, but I enjoyed it. It follows a businessman who pleads insanity to avoid prison. The judge is fed up and sentences the man to Arkham. It doesn’t end well for him.
The Asylum has appeared in various non-Bat titles, including the Justice League, Justice Society, and Sandman. Arkham made appearances in the Justice League cartoon and a Suicide Squad animated movie.
Atari Force by Eduardo Barreto
Earth has been ravaged by war and ecological imbalance. The Atari Technology and Research Institute sent a specially trained crew throughout the multiverse to find a new world for humanity.
The crew found a new world after months of trials and tribulations. It was dubbed New Earth.
Twenty-five years later, the Dark Destroyer returned to menace New Earth.
Martin Chapman, one of the original founders of New Earth, founded the Atari Force to battle the Dark Destroyer.
The team is composed of Martin, his son, and members of various alien recipes.
DC issued digests in the 1980s (the size of the Archie digests you find in the grocery stores). One series of digests was devoted to the Legion of Super-Heroes (it’s how I read most of the Silver Age appearances of the Legion). Another had random reprints of various DC comics. This digest contained the only Atari Force story I have read. If you’re curious, the other stories in the digest were a Blue Devil story, the “Who Is Donna Troy” New Titans story, and the “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” Legion story (the one where Gim introduces Yera to his parents). I don’t recall much of the Atari Force story.
Atari Force was licensed from the actual Atari company which explains why the group isn’t seen/reference anymore.
Atlantis by Marshall Rogers
Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the continent of Atlantis was one of the first places on Earth where civilization flourished. It was the most sophisticated civilization in the world, establishing twelve scattered settlement cities on other continents.
Magic was the dominant source of power in early Atlantis but science and technology gradually rose to prominence, later Atlantis combined magic with technology
Atlantis launched an exploratory spacecraft in 45,500 BC
King Thorval sent six expeditions in the 9600 BC to find alternate places for Atlanteans to live in the face of an impending natural catastrophe
One of the expeditions founded a colony in a secluded area between the earth’s surface and the hidden land known as Skartaris
Atlantis sank beneath the sea with only two of its cities surviving (Tritonis and Poseidonis)
The Atlanteans constructed protective domes around the cities and developed serums to allow underwater breathing
The citizens of Tritonis had an unexpected reaction to the serum and transformed into merfolk.
The Atlanteans developed telepathic abilities to communicate underwater. (But only Aquaman can command the creatures of the sea).
Tritonis remains secluded but Poseidonis has had more public exposure, including a major exposition held for the air-breathing people.
Remnants of the original Atlantean colony lost beneath the earth have been active again recently, attempting a takeover of Skartaris, which was thwarted by Travis Morgan (the Warlord).
Aquaman, Aquagirl, Aqualad, Arion, and Atlantis itself. Aquaman’s corner of the DC universe was features heavily in the first issue of “Who’s Who In The DC Universe”.
Atlantis has a role in all Aquaman series and other media projects. Power Girl was connected to Atlantis in a unnecessary post-Crisis retcon. Don’t worry, the retcon was also retconned and Power Girl is once again a Kryptonian. Atlantis and its citizens were featured in Infinite Crisis when an unstable Spectre unleashed his wrath on the area (he was on a rampage against magic users). DC’s Atlantis has made appearances in the Justice League cartoon, Young Justice cartoon and comic, and an animated Justice League movie.

Disney Review Request :Treasure Planet
Requested by @ariel-seagull-wings ,this is the film that inspired the request idea .We were talking about Treasure Island in general and they asked my opinion on this film and I just shrugged and asked if they would like me to just review it and they said yes
A sci fi take on the classic novel Treasure Island, and the basic plot is the same :Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon Levitt ) is the son of an inkeeper and get in his posession a map to treasure from a dying Billy Bones ( PAtrick Mcgoohan ) and with the help of a family friend goes on a voyage , and strikes a friendship with the one legged John Silver (Brian Murray ) but finds out he is a treacherous pirate who is leading a mutiny for he wants the treasure .
However there are changes ,the main one is the story is in space with aliens and robots and such, with sci fi changes like Silver is an alien Cyborg ,really most of the characters are aliens with the exception of Jim (Which I love, perfect for an animated sci fi film ) , the cleverst change is the parrot is now a shapeshifter and the marroned half mad Ben Gunn is now a robot voiced by Martin Short .There are other very big changes which makes this a very unique take on the Treasure Island story .Many characters are changed or combined ,Doctor Livesey and Squire Trelawney are combined into the dog like alien Doctor Doppler voiced by David Hyde Pierce ,The stern Captain Smollet becomes the female and feline alien Captain Amelia voiced by Emma Thompson ,the drunkard Captain Arrow basically become the same character he was in the Muppet version where he is the stern very serious character and is voiced by Roscoe Lee Brown ,the trecherous pirate George Merry and the murderous pirate Isreal Hands are combined into the spider like Mr Scroop voiced by Michael Wincott (There is a character in the film named Hands but he is a minor player ,and his role is given to Scroop as the pirate Jim fights when back on the ship ) ,and the biggest changes are the biggest being Jim and Silver.....But I will save that for later
OK I have talked about the changes, what d9o I think of it as a movie ....I think it is damn good . I think it does what an reinvention of a story should do ,it uses the story as a template but expands or changes stuff when necesary .As a fan of the source material and other adaptations It does bum me that some parts are left out ,especially Blind Pew ,but I do appreciate it keeps some great moments from the book
The film looks amazing with a good mix of CG and 2D.John Silver is especially breath taking being a mix of 2D but with CG components, specifically his mechanical limbs and eyes .Also little character stuff I really enjoyed in the animation like Amelias eyes dilate like a cats .Also the character design here ,the aliens all look so unique ,and I love how weird Silvers crew looks
The voice cast is all spot on ,Emma Thompson makes for a rather badass captain , PAtrick Mcgoohan (In his final role ) nails that salty seadog flare ,LAurie Metcalf is perfect as the concerned mother , I always love David Hyde Pierce ,Roscoe Lee Browne brigns such a dignity to Arrow , and Michael Wincott IS TERRIFYING as Scroop,he has a very gravely voice, its exactly what I imagine a spider would sound like (For the record SCroop is so underrated ,I find him horrifying. I dont know if he even ewants treasure ,he seems to just be in it for murder .He's also there so we have a "Boo and hiss" villain in contrast to Silver )
The best part of the film is the almost father and son relationship between Jim and Silver .Now this isnt the only version to have this element ,but I think this is the most heartwarming .Jim in this version is a broody teen whose father abandoned him and his mother and he develops a bond with Silver ,which makes when he finds out about Silvers villainy more heartbreaking. This might be the most sympathetic Silver ,here a pirate who has given up everything in pursuit of his dream to find Flints Trove ,and here truly likes Jim .In other version it is vague how much Silver actually cares about Jim ,but in this version it is so clear he cares about him .I also like that he still is the main antagonist but he's a villain we like and has layers ,he might be Disneys most interesting villain .Also my favorite scene in the film is the montage showing them bonding set to the Goo Goo Dolls "Im Still Here " it is such a sweet scene
AND NOW QUESTION TIME .Our requester wanted me to discuss three specific points
1. Would you prefer more focus could be given to other characters instead of the drama between Jim and Silver?
Me:No,because they are the main characters .For me Treasure Islands focus should be Jim and Silver and this is one of the most interesting takes on Jim and Silver
2. What do you think of the comic relief of Morph, Doppler and the Marooned Robot?
Me: Morph is a clever concept and is adorable .I reallly like Doppler, again I love David Hyde Pierce and I find him hilarious ,he gets some of the best lines.BEN....is alot .I dont hate him,Martin Shorts given his all and the animation on him is good and I think he is a clever play on the Ben Gunn from the book ,but he is very loud, kind of obnoxious and his jokes are so hit and miss (though I cant decide if "Was I ever dancing with an android named Lupe !!!???" is stupid or brillaint,it does make me laugh )
3. Toughts on the mix between the 18th century with the future?
Me: I love it . I like the mix of aesthetics.I think it looks awesome
OVerall I think its a film that has a cult following for a reason.I love it beck in 2002,love it now

Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum
Hero:
Rich handsome athletic erotophobic police-connected reactionary killer Batman
Villains:
Psychopathic predatory homo/hypersexual self-mutilating coprolaliac transvestite Joker
Naked fragile disease-spreading agalmatophilic homosexual putrescence Clayface
Emaciated wheelchair-bound Dr. Destiny
Drug-addicted paedophile Mad Hatter
Delusional satanic naked gender dysmorphic bisexual sadomasochistic coprophiliac Maxie Zeus
Psychopathic cannibalistic African descended mute reptilian beast-man Killer Croc
Deceptive psychotic homicidal transvestite Dr. Cavendish
Themes:
All of the few female characters (E. Arkham, C. Arkham, H. Arkham, M. Wayne, Pearl, Dr. Adams) are either victims of brutal male violence or plausible threats thereof
The only woman with a prominent role (Dr. Ruth Adams) is a pretentious, politically correct and ineffective psychiatrist whose therapy mentally damages the schizophrenic Two-Face further (resulting in incontinence, among other things), though she takes Batman's side against the delusional homicidal crossdresser Dr. Cavendish, acting decisively to slit his throat and save Batman (symbolically rejecting the idea of passive rehabilitation over necessary violence against an irredeemable psychopath and former co-worker/colleague). Batman attributes blame to the deranged Cavendish and explicitly, unsentimentally supports Adams' homicide ("He got what he deserved.")
Every character is racially European (barring mutant African Killer Croc)
There’s a suggestion from the dual protagonist (A. Arkham) that “madness” is hereditary and incurable: virtually all of the Asylum’s inmates are highly dangerous and/or highly unpleasant despite long-standing efforts to treat or cure them, with The Joker described as being potentially untreatable by Dr. Adams. The disfigured Two-Face (formerly Harvey Dent, Bruce Wayne's best friend) is far happier and more functional when he’s permitted to make decisions dualistically via his signature coin. A young Amadeus's attempts to rehabilitate the schizophrenic, sado-masochistic, unapologetic child-raping psychopath Martin "Mad Dog" Hawkins are shown to be childish, naïve and even fatally irresponsible, resulting in the brutal murder of his beloved wife and daughter
On top of that, exposure to the "criminally insane" seems to spread pathology even among the Asylum's authority figures (Amadeus, Cavendish), suggesting that madness is a social and institutional contagion. The purpose of the Asylum as a medical prison is further undermined by the fact that the inmates are released/escape with fatal consequences, leading one to the conclusion that many if not most of them should be disposed of in the same way that Amadeus justly (though not strictly legally) disposed of Hawkins
There's a consistent association between the concepts of deformity, mental illness, insanity, psychopathy, transvestism and paedophilia
The story is one of Nietzschean self-overcoming, with the Wagnerian hero Batman conquering his fears, defeating (whether physically or mentally) his degenerate enemies (who take the form of Jungian archetypes) and subduing the hellish madhouse, coming out the other side psychologically stronger

Songs for Halloween Parties
Halloween parties offer the most wide open subject possibilities of any type of celebration. Halloween is the one day of the year that lets you be any living thing or dead thing, any occupation, any human or non-human and any personality type. You can be a cartoon character if you like. Since Halloween can go hundreds of different directions, the playlist will likely be a diverse list of novelty songs. A serious house on serious earth
ARKHAM ASYLUM: A SERIOUS HOUSE ON SERIOUS EARTH DECEMBER 1989 BY GRANT MORRISON, DAVE MCKEAN AND GASPAR SALADINO
SYNOPSIS (FROM DC WIKIA)
Back in the 1920s, Amadeus Arkham witnessed his mother's descend to madness and as an adult, he became the architect and first administrator of Arkham Asylum, a mental institution dedicated to help the criminally insane and prevent them from being taken into the regular penal system. Arkham renovated the family manor into the asylum following his subsequent inheritance of the property after his mother commited suicide.
In the present, on April 1, Commissioner Gordon informs Batman that the patients of Arkham Asylum have taken over the building, and will murder the staff unless Batman agrees to meet with them. Among the hostages are a young woman named Pearl, who works in the kitchens; the current Administrator, Dr. Cavendish; and Dr. Ruth Adams, a therapist. The patients are led by Black Mask and Joker, who kills a guard to spur Batman to obey his wishes. Two-Face, meanwhile, has degenerated even further into madness as a result of Adams' well-intentioned therapy; she replaced his trademark coin with a 6-sided die, and then with a tarot deck of cards rendering him incapable of making simple decisions such as going to the bathroom.
Batman is forced into a game of hide and seek, and told he has one hour to make his way through the maze-like corridors and find a way out before his old foes are sent to find him. Batman fights his way through Arkham and his own subconscious, fighting some of his most dreaded enemies until he reaches a secret room high in the towers of the asylum - a room left unchanged from the days when the property served as Amadeus Arkham's childhood home.
Inside, Dr. Cavendish is dressed in a bridal gown and holding a straight razor to Dr. Adams' throat. He is revealed to have been the one to orchestrate the riot. When questioned by Batman, he prompts him to read a passage marked out in Amadeus Arkham's secret diary.
The hidden room turns out to have been Elizabeth Arkham's bedchamber. For many years she suffered delusions that she was being tormented by a supernatural creature, and would call to her son to protect her. However, Amadeus had suppressed a memory when one day, he finally saw the monster that tormented her - a great bat, a spectre of death. Subconsciously, he had chosen to block the truth of the events, but in the dairy, it is clearly explained how he used a pearl-handled straight razor from his pocket to cut his mother's throat and free her from her suffering. He then blocked out the memory and attributed her death to suicide. Years later, his wife and daughter were murdered by one of his former patients, a serial killer named Martin "Mad Dog" Hawkins. The tragedy brings back the memory of killing his mother and a traumatized Amadeus puts on his mother's wedding dress and takes out the pearl-handled razor. Kneeling in the blood of his family he vows to bind the evil spirit of "The Bat", which he believes inhabits the house, through ritual and sorcery. He continues his mission even after he is incarcerated in the Asylum himself; he scratches the words of the binding spell into the walls and floor of his cell with his fingernails until the day he dies.
Discovering Amadeus Arkham's journals, the razor and the dress, Cavendish begins to believe himself to be the one destined to continue Arkham's work. On April 1, the date Arkham's family was murdered, he lures Batman to the asylum. Believing Batman to be "The Bat" itself, Cavendish accuses him of feeding the evil of the house by bringing it more insane souls. Grappling with Batman, Cavendish drops the razor, and Adams picks it up. Reacting instinctively, she slashes it across Cavendish's throat, killing him.
Batman returns Two-Face's coin back from Dr. Adams, stating that it should be up to Two-Face to decide his fate. Two-Face then declares that if the coin lands scratched side up they kill Batman, otherwise they let him go. Two-Face flips the coin and declares Batman free. Batman leaves the Asylum and the inmates peacefully return to their cells, except for Two-Face, who looks at the moon and it is revealed that the coin landed scratched side up.
REVIEW
This is a very complicated book to review. It’s a Morrison!
Let’s go with my notes here, the very first thing we learn about the asylum is that you must be mad to be there. I think people in general are afraid of mental institutions because of this very thing. If you are there, who knows you are insane and who doesn’t? I think there is some kind of irrational thinking about being in asylums, that you might “catch it”.
In the first scene that Amadeus describes his mother, she was eating beetles, because the beetle represents rebirth, this means his mother already died and was “reborn”. It is later defined that being mad is being reborn in a world of magic, terror and symbolism. This will be the visual theme for the whole book (plus one other thing we will taker later).
These events happening in April’s Fools have a meaning inside the story, as Amadeus killed “Mad Dog” on April 1st. Many things happen around this date and it seems to be pretty much how we measure time. But Joker doesn’t know this. In this case we may think he is running the asylum, but it is doctor Cavendish that is planning everything. Although the Joker wants the Batman to stay where he belongs (since he is mad, he belongs in the asylum).
Amadeus starts talking about people in the glass, in reflections, it makes us think that he can hear voices or laughs through the glass. In the end he sees his mother (the madness in him, in his blood). I do think there is one more application for glasses (later). The important thing is, Amadeus felt “at home” after seeing the glass people. (at home = insane).
So what about those psychiatrists, if you are in this house you have to be mad. To be honest, doctor Ruth didn’t seem particularly sane in her methods, but I am pretty sure she is insane by the end of this story.
Amadeus has several foreshadows in his diary about the Joker or clowns. It is actually about japanese clown fishes. He later realizes they represent Pisces = symbol of trial and initiation = Death and rebirth. (Rebirth = becoming insane). It didn’t help that Amadeus met Aleister Crowley, and probably got even more obsessed with symbolism and dark magic.
So, at the heart of this story, Amadeus finds his wife and daughter killed by “Mad Dog”. While looking at the horrible scene, he starts looking for his daughter’s head, until he finds it in the doll house, looking back at him. I am not sure if this was intentional, but throughout the book, you will see that “panels” are usually very rectangular in shapes of windows, or similar to the windows outside the asylum. This makes me think that, because someone is looking at him through the windows of the doll house. We are seeing the story through windows. Now... which windows? The windows of the asylum (from outside the house)... or the windows of the doll house (inside the house)? In one case we are insane and in the other one we may not. (There is another detail about the outside world, however, we’ll cover it later).
Mad Hatter says “The apparent disorder of the universe is simply a higher order, an implicate order beyond our comprehension”, then we read “the asylum is a head that dreams us all into being”. You may think that perhaps we are making them crazy, if the head is us. But I leave this to you to decide.
“Arkham is a looking glass”. You can go through the looking glass if you are Alice, you can join the inmates.
In the end, what made Cavendish do all this, is reading Amadeus diary and finding out that it was a bat that tormented his mother. And that is why Amadeus put her out of her misery. So in his last year in the Asylum, managed to prepare a ritual to put an end to the bat.
Closing the story, Batman says that “sometimes it’s only madness that makes us what we are, or destiny”. This is actually true for the Joker in this story (depending on who you believe).
Now the twist of the story is that Batman’s fate is decided by the coin. When the coin turns scarred, Batman leaves the Asylum. Now, it should be the opposite, but a few panels before that, Batman tells the Joker “you are all free”. He is not exactly telling them to leave. They are free in the asylum, because the asylum is their home. So when they say goodbye to Batman, he goes to “the other asylum”, until he can no longer cope with the world, in which case he will be welcome at a serious house on serious earth.
I am pretty sure I missed a lot of symbolism and recurring imagery throughout the book. This book is a good one to have in both, print an digital. The art itself looks different on a screen (at the same time, you can zoom or add brightness in a screen).
This is a very disturbing story that happens to be Morrison’s first work for Batman. It’s a different point of view on what is being insane, on the Joker, and certainly on what role Batman has in this cycle of death and rebirth. Is Batman defined by madness? Is Batman tormenting the insane?
It’s one of those stories that do not have a definite review. You can keep on analyzing the thing and you will never finish.
Dave McKean works very well with his style here, but Gaspar Saladino, a veteran of the industry, should also get credit for his work on lettering each character in a different way.
By the way, the scene at the GCPD has no colors. The outside world has no colors. Because it’s not home. I still think Morrison just wants as to go mad.
I give this book a score of 10 and you should definitely read it at night, next to a candle and a mirror.
