Happy Saturday, everyone! I hope you don’t mind another cupcake photo. These are actually the #redvelvetcupcakes I posted the other day, but I decided to play around in photoshop this morning, just for kicks. So, I turned it into a regular chocolate cupcake photo with a teal wrapper! This week there was such an amazing show of participation for the challenge I co-hosted. I loved seeing the improvement throughout the week, and seeing people really rise to the challenge, no pun intended. That said, I’m excited to get back to creating just for creation’s sake, with no specific agenda or theme in mind. Especially with all that’s happening out in the world right now, and the time and effort it takes to wash everything each time I get back in the house, I am looking forward to relaxing a bit. Day four of the week-long challenge & going strong! We are so happy to see how many of you are learning! Today is all about crops. More often than not, when I feel like something is missing from my photograph, to make it feel complete, I realize it is a missing layer. Another composition lesson today, to get you thinking about the upcoming composition challenge for the week of March 23rd that I am co-hosting with @deepika.haldankar 👍 Let’s talk about texture! When I think about texture in composition, I most often think of it as a way to create contrast in my photo. Smooth against rough, for example. However, I also love to look at the texture of the food itself. The smooth drip of chocolate. That creamy soup. The grains of the cocoa. The texture of the food can speak to a viewer. How do you feel when you see the bubbles from a coke, or a dew drop on a bottle of beer. Can you imagine being refreshed? Does it make you think of a cool drink on a hot day? So, how often do you pay attention to texture in your photos? Do you really try to capture the essence of the food by emphasizing its texture? Or, do you use it to create contrast in your photos? Happy Saturday! I hope everyone's weekend is going well. I am desperately trying to get some work done this weekend, but Moo doesn't seem to want to let me work today. He keeps insisting on going out, & then doing nothing but eat everything he can find off the ground when we go outside. Alas, I love him to pieces, & all it takes is one look with his little almond shaped eyes ( #newfy ), to not be mad. 🥰🐶 If you didn't catch it on the stories yesterday, here it is! Delicious frosting, all using the magic of back lighting! 😋I don't use back lighting often, but for this photo, since back lighting can really help bring out texture, it was the right choice. What was a treat you really loved as a kid, but that was only brought into the house every once in a while? For me, one of those treats were these Queen Anne chocolate covered cherries. It's strange that we didn't have them in the house more often, since I grew up in a house loaded with junk food. Good morning! Happy Tuesday! It's been a while since I've done one of these big splash shots. Probably since my pear or Perrier shot from a while ago. Today's photo is my submission for the #eatcaptureshare ( #ecsw20 ) Instagram Challenge hosted by @thelittleplanation We were supposed to embrace the artist, Miro, as inspiration and utilize primary colors; red, yellow, and blue. I have known for a few weeks I was going to use some apples, but when I approached this shot I actually wanted an apple floating in water. Alas, I don't have a transparent vessel, yet, to do that shot. So, I opted for this instead. I did try some shots with a bite taken out of the apple, or ones with a core, but to be honest, instead of giving it character and adding to the composition, it actually just looked gross! 🤦‍♀️ 🤣Clearly a pro food stylist is required for a not gross-looking apple bite 🤣 In other updates, last night when I went to go upload a photo for Joanie Simon's, @thebiteshot, quick fire challenge, I went onto YouTube to find the link, and discovered James Corden's Carpool Karaoke. Apparently it is quite popular, but I had not heard of it before. So, while I should have been sleeping, I ended up binge watching several of those clips. Hi Everyone, Happy Thursday! Today I am giving you just a sneak peek at the bread, cheese, and fruit plate/board that I shot over the weekend. I have several different versions of photographs from this shoot, including a closeup of the board itself where you get to see all the goodies like apples, cheese, bread, dried fruit, and so forth. But today, you will have to settle with some bread, cheese, and a golden honey drizzle. Is that okay with you? 🙏🤣 This photo is also part of an IG collab hosted by @cilantrochronicles for some #superbowl54snacks ! I mean, I guess maybe the honey makes things a little fancy, but who doesn’t love a good board full of small, crunchy bread, rich, smooth cheese, and fresh fruit? Am I right? 🤣🤔 I have actually only just recently learned of collabs, and I am so happy that I can participate in them now. They are such an amazing way to connect with other bloggers and photographers out there. And I love the connections and friends I have made from all over the world! Happy Wednesday, everyone! Today I am bringing you something a bit different; a closeup, #macro shot of some dried mango. I know you all normally like my moody scenes, but I really wanted to capture those sugar grains and the veins of the mango. I promise though, tomorrow we will go back to a dark and moody! So, hang tight! 🙏😉🤣🙏 Please? 🙏 I also will have another large composite coming soon. I know I used to do one once a week, and I do have a list of ones I want to get to. However, the last few weeks I have instead been curating content by spending more time behind the camera, and less time in Photoshop! That said, I do have another Photoshop editing video planned for everyone. This one will be much shorter and more on edits to help give your food that extra oomph! Have you all noticed how a photo of an empty plate or bowl can sometimes be more interesting than than seeing a full meal? That’s because seeing that empty vessel, with only the crumbs remaining tells a story. It can evoke an emotion or help recall a memory. That is so much of what composition is about.  A few weeks ago, I posted a #saffron picture as part of the spice theme for the #eatcaptureshare challenge.  This picture today, was another one from the collection of images.  When people scrolled through the images, almost everyone said that this one was their favorite. I think that’s because this one is so abstract, & the falling saffron, on the almost empty cutting board makes the viewer curious. Those few pieces of saffron are like the crumbs. Nailing composition is so important in photography, because it is what helps the audience connect with the image.  That is why, for the week of March 23rd, I will be partnering with the beautiful @deepika.haldankar to co-host a 5-day challenge. Each day will be a different theme, as it relates to composition.  As we get closer to that date, Deepika and I will announce the specific themes for each day, and will share inspiration to match those themes in our feed, with helpful tips.
