8 NOVEMBER 2023 || SINGAPORE VISIT : DAY IV (1/3) - TREETOP WALK, MACRITCHIE NATURE RESERVE

The Prince of Wales was accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance - Lawrence Wong for a TreeTop Walk at the MacRitchie Nature Reserve on his Day Four in Singapore.

During their visit, they crossed the free-standing suspension bridge which connects the two highest points on their walking route, Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

William also met and spoke to the NPark Rangers and NPark Youth Stewards for Nature during his visit. The National Parks Board’s (NParks) Youth Stewards for Nature programme was lqunched in 2021 and is aimed at mentoring young volunteers aged 18 to 25 to carry out nature-related projects such as species population surveys and designing therapeutic gardens.

During the walk, the Prince of Wales also met Dr Isabelle Lackman - a finalist in the 2022 Earthshot Prize. She co-founded Hutan, a research organisation based in Borneo that studies and monitors the region’s biodiversity, from wild orang utan and elephant research to hornbill and frog surveys.

M. W. Fedyk, manager of the Beacon Radio store, 548 Main st., heard noises at the rear of the premises when he visited the place about 9.15 p.m. He immediately walked quietly out and phoned the police from a shop next door.

Acting-Detectives McPherson and MacRitchie were soon on the scene and found two youth gathering a quantity of loot, which they apparently had intended to take away with them. They had gained entrance by forcing the rear door.

Water Pipes Burst in Bukit Timah, Causing Major Disruptions

8 December 1963

Singapore– At 3.23am this morning, blasts were reported along major water pipelines in Bukit Timah. The attack targeted a critical infrastructure node responsible for transporting water from MacRitchie and Johor to various parts of the country. 

Preliminary assessments from the PUB state that this will affect the Central and Western portions of the country, with the Central Business District, Queenstown, Holland Village, and Jurong suffering the most severe water disruptions.

With the disruptions greatly affective services, Singapore General Hospital has begun transferring patients to other less affected hospitals, with most outpatient appointments being rescheduled.

The affected pipes had undergone maintenance works five days ago, with no irregularities reported in the water pressure the night before the incident. Evaluations thus far have concluded that it was highly unlikely for the pipe to have burst without the involvement of foul play.

Should the water disruptions not be addressed swiftly, more disruptions are anticipated as businesses will have to scale back operations.
