The Wreck of the Old 97 was an American rail disaster involving the Southern Railway mail train, officially known as the Fast Mail (train number 97), while en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, on September 27, 1903. Travelling at an excessive speed in an attempt to maintain schedule, the train derailed at the Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, where it careened off the side of the bridge, killing 11 on-board personnel and injuring seven others.

Then and Now: 1969 and 2023.

The Otis Lonon Store and Post Office was located near the railroad underpass on Hwy 221 North in McDowell County, North Carolina in the Ashford-North Cove community.

Clarence W. Wiseman built this store building in 1927. The main, central part of the building held Wiseman's General Store, which carried a wide array of items and served as a local polling place during elections. The northern end of the building originally held the Ashford Post Office. A separate corn mill building, no longer standing, stood to the store's rear.

During World II, the store was run by Mac Lonon. After the war, Otis Lonon took over its operation. He ran the store until its closing in 1971.

Once the hallmark of many small communities, the old general store was more than just a store, it was a gathering place. If you close your eyes you can almost hear the conversations and the laughter that people once had here. It was once so important to the community.

My Granny, Mildred Wiseman Carpenter, was once the post master here for a time.

Some recently bought books, nearly all second-hand, and mostly connected to my Mapping Indo-European Thought project. Also includes the Turkish translation of the dialogue between Michel Foucault and Jonathan Simon, which I edited, and to which I contributed a new preface. The English version of that text is here.

Movie Review | Live Free or Die Hard (Wiseman, 2007)

Fond memories of not going to see this in theatres but instead watching this on my buddy's portable DVD player during my high school lunch breaks when every else was busy going outside or whatever. This is definitely of its time in a lot of ways (*cough*Kevin Smith*cough*), but I think the computer stuff still goes down okay. There seem to be actual limitations to the abilities of the hackers, and their capabilities seem organically introduced, so this avoids a lot of the "computers = magic" stuff you can get in movies like this. I cannot attest to their accuracy is from a cybersecurity perspective, but these elements feel narratively sturdy.

Also, this definitely has the teal and orange look common in mid-2000s action movies, but considering that was the era of shakycam (which we've moved past) and overuse of CGI (which we have not), the action is refreshingly coherent and tactile. I assume some of the credit should go to the editor Nicholas (son of Andre) De Toth, who keeps the gunfights nice and crisp, although his assemblage of the fight scenes is less assured. There's one a good bit where McClane launches a car at a helicopter, and as everyone knows, cool helicopter shit is a sure sign of quality, no matter what other shortcomings a movie may have.

The valid complaint most people have about this one is that it doesn't really feel like a Die Hard movie, and some of the more outlandish plot developments aside, I think it boils down its handling of McClane, who is no longer the out of his element everyman of the earlier movies and now a sarcastic boomer who squints his way through much of this. This means that Bruce Willis' vulnerability is never really tapped into, although you do get moments of that classic Bruce Willie magic, usually when he's being shot at or right after he's blown something up. Justin Long is surprisingly tolerable as his costar, despite being cast for his role in the Mac commercials. His character at one point goes on a rant about fake news and later gets yelled at by McClane and gets shaken out of his political apathy, as both come to terms with the capacity nerds have for evil. I'm sure somebody somewhere has argued that this is an important document of the Bush era, or prescient of things to come. Me, I'm just a simple man who was laughing when the boomer was yelling at the computer nerds and cheering when the boomer was shooting at people or blowing stuff up.
