Black Women Inspirise

Jean Knight was born Jean Caliste on January 26,1943 in Crescent City, New Orleans, Louisiana. Jean is an inspiration to black women who have been lied to or cheated on like me. Her first hit, “Mr .Big Stuff” is an anthem for women who have been hurt by their spouse:

“I know you broke their hearts one after another now, bit by bit; You made 'em cry, many poor girls cry; When they tried to keep you happy, they just tried to keep you satisfied; I'd rather give my love to a poor guy that has a love that's true (oh yeah);Than to be fooled around and get hurt by you; 'Cause when I give my love, I want love in return (oh yeah); Now, I know this is a lesson, Mr. Big Stuff, you haven't learned.” 

This say to me that girl after girl after girl after girl, each girl was cheated on by the same man. He had each girl shedding tears. When they were trying to please you, they were trying to keep you around or near. I would give my love to someone else instead of you because their love would be true, so I won’t get hurt by you. Because when I give you my heart, I expect your heart in return. This is a teachable moment, that you should’ve learned.

Heavy D & The Boyz did a remix in 1987 of Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff.” Instead of talking about a bad relationship, he talked about his weight:

“I'm the overweight-er, prince dominator MC; Heavy D, constant weight gainer; And since I choose, the weight not to lose; I will stay this way so that I can bruise; MC's around, who front and frown; You go round for round, I go pound for pound; At the end of the party when you sayin' goodnight; Don't come to me and say: ‘Take it light,’ I'm your mister Big Stuff!...An incredible, overweight huggable; Prince, a bold treat, that's why I'm so lovable; I got the knack to keep the fly girls shovin'; Two hundred and sixty pounds of good lovin'.”

Stax Records artist Mable John is an inspiration as well. Her song “Your Good Thing Is About To End,” recorded in in 1969, is focused on how a husband had a good lifestyle, but he ruined it:

“I don't have to beg you to hold me; Cause somebody else will; You don't have to love me when I want it; Cause somebody else will; When other men said they wanted me; I didn't have to tell them I was your very own; Gettin' myself back together; Is gonna be a big problem I know; But when the right man says he wants me; You can bet I won't say no.” 

These words say to me that if you are not handling your boyfriend duties, someone will take your job, your responsibilities and will hold me and love just because I’m not getting that kind of attention from you. When other guys said that I should be with them, I didn’t tell them that I was taken because it didn’t feel like I was. Healing myself from them wombs you gave me won’t be easy, but when Mr. Right comes I will not hesitate on saying “Yes.”

Lou Rawls made his own version in 1969 of John’s “Your Good Thing Is About To End.” Rawls’ version is VERY vice versa from John’s, the words “when other men” were changed to “whenever somebody” and “ the right man says he” was replaced with “the right girl says she.” He adds, “Don’t let no one turn you away from me, girl” and “You better hold,hold on to what you got,girl.” To me, Rawls’s version sounds very gospel like.

These two wonderful and amazing black women inspired with music and song. They inspired A LOT of women to speak out via Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Their influence is heard in  Beyoncé’s “Sorry” and “Irreplaceable,” Rihanna’s “Take a Bow,” Carrie Underwood’s, “Before He Cheats,” and in my own song “Loyal, Faithful.”
