Was at work again this morning, just did my normal 6hrs, didn't stay late, so I have a bit of time this evening to get some things done! Got the heating turned right up because it has been snowing all day, and now I'm curious about what weather everyone else has right now?

Help Me Pay for Summer Tuition

Boozhoo! Aaniin! (Hello) I am an Indigenous Student studying my traditional language in an M.A. program. I hope to create free resources guided toward self-learning for many communities and individuals to use.

Despite taking no classes in the summer, my institution requires M.A. students to pay summer tuition, which is a whooping 3k! This was quite a surprise to me. I do have student-loans, but their funding does not cover summer tuition. I also have a job, but on top of rent and expenses, it's hard to make enough. I am posting here to ask for help. Any donation helps, no matter how small, will greatly help me. I know I am literally one of tens of thousands of students who ask for charity, and my cause is no more important than theirs. I just hope that there are some people out there who have a little extra to spare, and who resonate with my struggle.

Today I got a paper back and despite the good grade, I’m really bummed out because I expected a little more. Regardless, I finished an essay I had due tomorrow, read a little of my current read, and meal prepped for the rest of the week! It was a really decent day 🩷

throwback tuesday to that time when i took one of the few large lecture hall classes i ever took in college, a class on pre-1500s English literature, and the professor (a balding man with a British accent who banned computers because, according to him, he once caught someone watching Shrek 2 on a laptop during the lecture and he was upset it wasn't Shrek 1) stopped in the middle of talking about Beowulf to a hundred students to ask ME SPECIFICALLY (in the back half of the room but not all the way at the back) if I was using my smartphone under the table, so I had to lift up my hands and show him that no, I was knitting because the class had a bunch of printouts so I didn't need to take notes but the man wouldn't let me play spider solitaire or scroll tumblr and I had to do SOMETHING with my hands, and he was like, "ah, weaving peace I see. it seems we have the peaceweaver in our class" and then just carried on with things

Actually the worst thing to come out of the new pjo series is people deciding Annabeth's dad was 19-22 when he was given her by Athena (and therefore "just a kid at the time" so it's not his fault, he was in debt and couldn't afford it) He was in the middle of/nearly finished with his PhD, the Chase family was rich and he was probably a legacy (college not demigod wise) so no, he was just a shit dad. And she was also like 7 when she ran away and he was already married to her stepmom who was half the problem. Characters can be 30+ actually it's okay I promise

slow cooking a lighthearted modern au where esen and baoxiang are pining after their friends ouyang and ma, respectively. but due to a ~wacky misunderstanding~ (read: chronic heteronormativity) they think ouyang and ma are dating each other—obviously that’s why ouyang is always going over to her place, right?

esen is in denial about his feelings and extremely supportive of ouyang’s relationship (he avoids talking about it or thinking about it—out of respect to ouyang’s privacy ofc). baoxiang thinks ouyang is in denial about his own sexuality and using ma (he has formulated a 12-step plan to Remove Ouyang that he will enact When The Time Comes).

then one day: baoxiang and ma are hanging out (spa day), esen and ouyang are also hanging out (sporting event(?)) and they all decide to meet up at that new restaurant afterwards. as they arrive, ma and ouyang are texting, they tell baoxiang and esen “hey my partner got us a table.” so baoxiang and esen follow them to the table expecting to see the other couple already seated there. but it’s just zhu.

(they both have met zhu—they thought she was just ma’s roommate. in reality she’s ma’s fiancée and ouyang’s queerplatonic d/s situationship.) (they also realize neither of them has ever actually seen ma and ouyang interact for an extended period of time. it becomes immediately apparent that ma dislikes ouyang and ouyang doesn’t even know her name.)

After the stress of writing my first draft, somehow the editing still feels a bit daunting. I still have a few unfinished sentences I need to figure out as well as my conclusion… but even if it feels different, the worst is really over 🌸

there are multiple history phd students at my uni who do not have an ma

well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i can only speak to my anecdata and you can only speak to yours, but when i was applying to grad school in multiple countries that was not an option any department offered. sometimes a school will work out a sweetheart deal if you come highly recommended from an undergrad mentor in the field or smth but they can also just renege on you and make you do the ma en route anyway. like maybe my subfield is just full of assholes but for us, it's common to be admitted to a phd-granting program without an ma, but they will make you get the ma first. so that's not "being a phd student without an ma", it's "being an ma student with contingent future acceptance to the phd in the same department"

Most of the other PhD students in my department are older than me but I'm also really bad at guessing people's ages so I didn't realize that for a while. I was convinced we're all mostly in the same age range, like plus minus one or two years. I think I'm like at least five years younger than most of them. I'm a baby.
