Bruce’s unfinished masterpiece...
Titled ‘Bruce’s Unfinished Masterpiece’ in honour of Bruce McLaren, the founder of McLaren, the M6GT is the latest race car to be stripped bare in INK’s signature minimalistic aesthetic. INK’s commemoration of McLaren’s vision revives the lost history of a car that almost slipped into obscurity.
An homage to speed and form in the purest sense, the Plainbodies series takes historical race cars and peels away their classic liveries to reveal the practical beauty in the bodies underneath. Rendered in white, the McLaren M6GT is the latest to join a line-up that includes the Ferrari 250 GTO, Ferrari 330 P4, Ford GT40, Jaguar D-Type, Porsche 917 and Porsche 959, to name a few.
Bruce McLaren, pioneering race car driver, designer, and engineer, began to conceive of the M6GT in the late 1960s, imagining it as the fastest road car in existence. Bruce McLaren’s vision for the M6GT is the genesis for all McLaren road cars. Based on the latest race technology, the M6GT was superlight, blistering quick, confidence inspiring and safe, and continues to define the McLaren brand today.
In 1969, new manufacturing regulations required McLaren to build 50 identical models of the M6GT car, a requirement that McLaren could not meet at the time. This rule would ultimately doom the M6GT, leaving it confined to the pages of history as an unfinished masterpiece.
Unfortunately, just one year later in 1970, Bruce McLaren passed away and his vision for the M6GT died with him. His legacy lived on through a race-spec prototype, the OBH 500H, which continues to tell the story of McLaren's innovative ambition to race at Le Mans and deliver a road-legal supercar only a few years after the establishment of his company.

It all started with the Mclaren M6GT...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruce’s dream was to build the highest specification, fastest and quickest accelerating road car in the world, and be able to homologate it and sell it to customers. In his main priorities there were performance and handling, but safety was also an essential feature.
Bruce’s design came to life in 1969: the scarlet car, which was only a prototype, was light, low, loud and unbelievably quick, it had a Chevrolet engine which ensured sparkling performance, with an estimated top speed of 165mph and a zero to 100mph time of eight seconds. The prototype also had some interesting features, like manually operated lights that were raised and lowered using finger holes in the leading edge of the pods. Bruce used the prototype in his daily life, like to commute to work and to attend race meetings, but still his desire was to turn the prototype into a production vehicle for customers. He turned to Peter Agg of Trojan, who had been building customer race cars for McLaren, and struck a deal to build 250 production cars.
Sadly Bruce’s dream died with him 52 years ago, but thankfully McLaren fullfilled that dream, and in 1992 it was brought to life by Gordon Murray in the awe-inspiring McLaren F1,the first official McLaren road car.
P. S only two M6GT were ever built.

Bruce McLaren's McLaren M6GT is back on the streets of Chicago Review
Bruce McLaren’s McLaren M6GT is back on the streets of Chicago Review
McLaren M6GT – The first supercar that McLaren produced for street circulation. However, the M6GT project was postponed after the death of Bruce McLaren. However, this car is still really one of the remarkable milestones in McLaren’s history. Bruce McLaren had the intention of participating in the 1969 World Sports Championship with a coupe version of the M6B Can-Am. However, in order to…

McLaren M6 GT
The Ford Motor Company's 1960s campaign to challenge Ferrari and win the Le Mans 24-Hour Race required not just innovative engineers but also the assistance of some of the world's finest drivers, among them experienced F1 star Bruce McLaren. At around the same time New Zealander McLaren was establishing his own team in England and developing the first of the cars that would bear his name, the McLaren M1 sports-racer, developments of which, in the form of the mighty M6 and M8, would later dominate the legendary Can-Am series. His experience of driving the Ford GT40 had convinced McLaren of the street potential of such a car, which could also be homologated for Group 4 sports car racing. What's more, he had the ideal basis for such a project in the form of his simple yet highly effective Can-Am sports-racer, the M6. The result was the McLaren M6GT coupé.
Essentially, the M6 GT was a re-skinned, road-legal version of the M6A race car. As such, it was extremely light – weighing in at just over 800 kg – a catalyst for the intended driving dynamics for the car.
The coupe body was made primarily of fibreglass and underneath, continued to feature the aluminum monocoque derived from the race car. Visually, the M6 GT styling queues were contemporary with other well-known race cars, such as the Group 6 Ferrari.  Notable features included the ‘butterfly’ doors, and manually operated pop-up headlights on some examples.
At the heart of the McLaren M6 GT was a mid-mounted Bartz-tuned 5.7L Chevrolet LT1 engine which output 370-horsepower @ 5,800 rpm and 370 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm. This allowed the car to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 165 mph.
Only 4 units of the M6 GT were ever produced – two painted red, another in yellow, and the last finished in the iconic McLaren Orange.
