A rebel group with alleged links to Rwanda this week seized Rubaya, a mining town in eastern Congo known for producing a key mineral used in smartphones, the group said Thursday in a statement. In a statement shared with The Associated Press, a spokesperson for the M23 rebel group said the town was “liberated.” The Congolese army declined to comment on the situation. The decades long conflict in eastern Congo has produced one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 100 armed groups fighting for control of the mineral-rich area near the border with Rwanda. Many groups are accused of carrying out mass killings, rapes and other human rights violations. The violence has displaced about 7 million people, many beyond the reach of aid. The town of Rubaya holds deposits of tantalum, which is extracted from coltan, a key component in the production of smartphones. It is among the minerals that was named earlier this month in a letter from Congo’s government questioning Apple about the tech company’s knowledge of “blood minerals” being smuggled in its supply chain. “The fall of Rubaya is in a way the embodiment of this systemic plundering,” Ernest Singoma, a civil society activist in Goma, told the AP on Thursday. There’s been an upsurge in fighting in recent months between M23 rebels and Congo army forces, and it comes as the United Nations plans to withdraw peacekeepers from the region by the end of the year.

Paul Kagame: A Traitor to Pan-Africanism? A Garveyite Perspective on His Role in the Congo Crisis and Rwanda’s Neocolonial Ties
From a Garveyite perspective, which prioritizes Pan-African unity, self-determination, and the collective upliftment of African peoples, President Paul Kagame's policies and actions in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) directly contradict these principles. While mainstream narratives often present Kagame as a visionary leader who has brought economic development to Rwanda, a deeper analysis reveals that his administration has actively destabilized a fellow African nation, exploited its natural resources, aligned itself with neocolonial forces, and maintained an authoritarian grip on power—all of which undermine the very essence of Pan-African solidarity and Black self-reliance.
In this analysis, we will explore:
Kagame’s role in the destabilization of the DRC through the M23 rebellion
The exploitation of Congolese resources for Rwanda’s economic benefit
How his authoritarian rule stifles true self-determination in Rwanda
His strong ties with Western powers and why they contradict Garveyism
The broader impact of his policies on Pan-African unity and African sovereignty
1. Destabilization of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Kagame’s Support for M23 Rebels
One of the most damning betrayals of Pan-African unity has been Kagame's continued military interference in the DRC, particularly through his government’s support for the M23 rebel group. Kagame has deployed Rwandan troops and military resources to aid M23, which has led to widespread violence, displacement, and economic destruction in eastern Congo.
Key Facts About Rwanda’s Support for M23:
Kagame’s administration has provided 3,000 to 4,000 troops to assist the M23 rebels in capturing Congolese territory.
Over 400,000 Congolese civilians have been displaced due to M23 attacks.
Key cities, including Goma and Bukavu, have fallen under rebel occupation, causing economic and social devastation.
Kagame’s support for M23 has prevented true African unity by fueling inter-African conflict, rather than fostering cooperation and peace.
Garveyite Takeaway: Marcus Garvey envisioned a united Africa, free from internal divisions and Western manipulation. Kagame’s aggressive military interventions directly contradict the principle of Black solidarity and African self-governance. Instead of promoting peace and cooperation, his actions mirror colonial strategies of divide and rule, further destabilizing Africa for personal and geopolitical gain.
2. Economic Exploitation of the DRC’s Natural Resources: Rwanda’s Coltan Trade
While Kagame’s administration presents Rwanda as a model of economic success, much of its wealth is built on the exploitation of Congolese resources. Rwanda has illegally extracted minerals, particularly coltan, from the DRC through M23-controlled mining operations.
Key Facts About Rwanda’s Economic Exploitation of Congo:
M23 rebels have generated over $800 million from illicit coltan mining, with much of the profits flowing to Rwanda.
Rwanda has established trade routes that allow it to export Congolese minerals as if they were Rwandan products, deceiving international markets.
While Rwandan elites benefit from this exploitation, Congolese communities remain in poverty, subjected to violence and displacement.
Garveyite Takeaway: Garveyism promotes economic independence and self-reliance—not at the expense of other African nations, but through cooperation, trade, and collective development. Kagame’s exploitation of Congolese resources mirrors the tactics of European colonial powers, robbing Africa of its wealth rather than working toward shared prosperity. His actions have kept Congo in a state of crisis while fueling Rwanda’s economic rise—at the cost of African unity.
3. Authoritarian Governance and Suppression of Dissent in Rwanda
Despite Kagame’s portrayal as a “progressive” African leader, his governance style is deeply authoritarian. His administration has suppressed political opposition, silenced dissenting voices, and limited press freedom—a direct violation of Garveyite principles of empowered and active African leadership.
Key Facts About Kagame’s Authoritarian Rule:
Opposition leaders and activists have been jailed, assassinated, or exiled under his rule.
Rwandan elections are heavily controlled, with Kagame winning over 98% of the vote in a system that leaves no room for real democracy.
Press freedom is nearly nonexistent—journalists critical of Kagame’s administration have been arrested or forced into exile.
Garveyite Takeaway: Garveyism emphasizes self-governance, political participation, and Black leadership free from external control. Kagame’s dictatorial approach strips Rwandans of their political voice, preventing true self-determination. While Garvey called for African leaders to rise and empower their people, Kagame has consolidated power at the expense of genuine African participation in governance.
4. Kagame’s Deep Ties with Western Powers and Neocolonial Influence
Another contradiction in Kagame’s leadership is his close relationship with Western powers, including the United States, the UK, and France. While Garveyism demands African self-reliance and freedom from Western control, Kagame has positioned Rwanda as a tool for Western geopolitical interests.
Key Facts About Kagame’s Western Ties:
Kagame has received billions in Western aid, making Rwanda economically dependent on former colonial powers.
The UK signed an asylum deal with Rwanda, using it as a dumping ground for refugees they refuse to take in themselves.
Kagame frequently partners with Western corporations, allowing them to extract African wealth rather than empowering local economies.
Western governments ignore Kagame’s human rights abuses because he aligns with their strategic interests.
Garveyite Takeaway: Garveyism teaches African self-determination without Western interference. Kagame’s cosy relationship with the West has made Rwanda a pawn in neocolonial schemes, contradicting the fundamental Garveyite belief that Africa must control its own destiny.
5. The Broader Impact: Kagame’s Role in Weakening Pan-Africanism
Kagame’s policies do not only affect Rwanda or the DRC—they have weakened the broader Pan-African movement by fueling division, economic exploitation, and Western dependence. His administration’s role in the DRC has set back African unity by decades, ensuring that African nations remain divided and vulnerable to foreign interests.
Why Kagame’s Actions Are a Direct Betrayal of Garveyism:
Instead of uniting Africa, he has fueled inter-African conflicts.
Instead of promoting economic independence, he has exploited African wealth for elite Rwandan interests.
Instead of empowering his people, he has suppressed democracy and silenced dissent.
Instead of rejecting neocolonialism, he has aligned with Western powers at the expense of African sovereignty.
Garveyite Takeaway: Kagame has failed to live up to the principles of African self-reliance, unity, and self-determination. Instead, his leadership has mirrored the actions of colonial forces—destabilizing African nations, exploiting resources, and working with the West to maintain power.
Conclusion: Kagame’s Legacy Is One of Division, Exploitation, and Betrayal
From a Garveyite perspective, Kagame is not a leader of African liberation—he is a neocolonial agent who has used Rwanda’s success to justify the continued destabilization and exploitation of the African continent. His administration’s support for M23, his plundering of Congolese resources, his authoritarian control over Rwanda, and his deep ties to Western interests have undermined African unity and economic independence.
True Pan-Africanism demands unity, sovereignty, and self-determination—not the division, exploitation, and neocolonial alliances Kagame has fostered.

The world is now paying attention to the problem in Congo.
The m 23 so-called Rebels are the Congo's version of the Houthis in Gaaza- they are fighting for their freedom and liberation of their resources from the sell-out govt.
This is part 1 of a series of videos I will post to illuminate the problem.
I find it difficult to understand why ppl NEVER EVER first look at the HISTORY of any conflict because there is ALWAYS a history. If we only try to understand the history, we will better understand today's goal the parties are trying to achieve. The M23 are like the Palestinians fighting for a better country against as you so aptly describe as the Hidden enemy. It is disheartening to see our ppl fight against each other meanwhile the Toilet paper ppl sit back and steals their resources and smile going to bed😮.

Hospitals overwhelmed as Eastern Congo conflict intensifies
Hospitals in Goma, a major city in eastern Congo, are struggling to address an influx of hundreds of wounded patients as fighting escalates between government forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.
The conflict, which displaced nearly 6.5 million people, sparked one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with medical facilities overwhelmed and supplies running critically low. Since the M23 rebels launched their offensive on Goma on 26 January, more than 700 people were killed and nearly 3,000 wounded, according to officials.
Kyeshero Hospital, operated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), is also severely overcrowded, often operating at over 200% capacity. Surgeon Johnny Kasangati reported removing 48 bullets in a single day, highlighting the intensity of the violence.
The fighting disrupted supply chains, leaving hospitals without essential medical resources. Goma’s international airport, a key entry point for supplies, is now under rebel control, exacerbating the crisis. Aid groups’ stockpiles had also been looted, forcing medical staff to rely on dwindling reserves.
Transporting patients to other facilities, such as Bukavu in South Kivu, has become impossible due to suspended boat services and blocked roads. This has left hospitals in Goma to bear the full brunt of the crisis.
Rising death toll and disease risks
The conflict’s death toll continues to rise, with Congo’s government confirming 773 deaths and 2,880 injuries. Morgues are overflowing, and fears of mass graves and disease outbreaks are growing, according to Jules Kafitiye, medical director at Maternité de la Charité Hospital.
We had 66 bodies here. Fifty-six were transferred to the provincial hospital, where the morgue has more space than ours.
The M23 rebels, backed by an estimated 4,000 Rwandan troops, claim to be defending ethnic Tutsis in Congo. Rwanda accuses the Congolese military of collaborating with Hutu militias linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
The conflict, rooted in decades of ethnic tensions, has turned eastern Congo into a battleground for over 100 armed groups vying for control of its mineral-rich territories.
As hospitals struggle to cope and the humanitarian crisis deepens, the international community faces mounting pressure to intervene and address the violence.

Congolese rebels, led by Corneille Nangaa of the Congo River Alliance, claimed control of Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, after a swift offensive that displaced thousands and heightened concerns of regional conflict. The M23, a Rwanda-backed rebel group, pushed past Munigi into Goma, demanding government forces disarm and surrender.
After negotiations, some Congolese army officers fled by boat to Bukavu, while soldiers were instructed to deposit weapons at a U.N. mission. Sporadic gunfire echoed through the city as the rebels consolidated their hold, marking a significant escalation in the region's instability.

African leaders urge ceasefire in eastern Congo
On Saturday, leaders from eastern and southern Africa called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Congo. Rebel groups are threatening to overthrow the government. The leaders also urged President Felix Tshisekedi to engage in direct talks with the rebels.
Tshisekedi, who joined the summit via videoconference from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has previously refused to negotiate with the M23 rebels. He believes they aim to exploit Congo’s mineral wealth. The M23 is suspected of receiving support from Rwanda.
Summit calls for dialogue with all parties
At the summit’s close, a statement urged the resumption of “direct negotiations and dialogue with all parties, both state and non-state”, including M23. The rebels had taken control of Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo. This followed clashes that left nearly 3,000 dead and displaced hundreds of thousands, according to the UN.
The summit, which brought together leaders from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), was significant. Rwanda and Congo are both members of the EAC, and the SADC includes countries from Congo to South Africa.
Tensions between Rwanda and South Africa over Congo conflict
Rwandan President Paul Kagame and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the summit. Ramaphosa has upset Rwanda by deploying South African troops to fight the M23 rebels under the SADC banner.
Rwanda criticises the presence of SADC peacekeepers, claiming they have worsened the conflict in North Kivu. Kagame argues that the SADC troops cannot be considered peacekeepers, as they are fighting alongside Congolese forces against the rebels.
The M23 rebels are said to be supported by around 4,000 Rwandan troops. Congolese forces are backed by regional peacekeepers, UN troops, militias, and Burundian soldiers. Their focus now is to prevent the rebels from advancing towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province.
Support for dialogue and peaceful resolution
Kenyan President William Ruto, speaking at the summit, urged for a peaceful resolution: “The lives of millions depend on our ability to navigate this complex and challenging situation with wisdom and clarity.”
Ruto, who chairs the East African Community, stressed that dialogue “is not a sign of weakness.” He called on all parties to put aside their differences and engage in constructive talks.
Congo rebels and government face growing pressure
The latest M23 offensive is drawing concern. It mirrors the rebels’ previous capture of Goma and breaks a 2024 ceasefire brokered by Angola. Some analysts fear that the rebels are now linking their actions to broader calls for better governance and reforms. They have even threatened to march on Kinshasa, some 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) away.
The Congo River Alliance, a coalition of rebel groups, issued a letter to the summit. They said they were fighting against a government that “flouts republican norms” and poses a “serious threat” to the Congolese people. The letter, signed by rebel leader Corneille Nangaa, said their revolution is “national” and includes people from all ethnic backgrounds.
The rebels also expressed openness to direct dialogue with the Congolese government. However, they face growing pressure to leave Goma.
In addition to calling for the reopening of Goma’s airport, the summit called for a plan to withdraw “uninvited foreign armed groups” from Congo’s territory. Another meeting, in Equatorial Guinea, also urged the immediate withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congo. They also called for the airport’s reopening to allow humanitarian aid to reach the region.
