A seasons struggle

I find woodland photography a bit of a struggle in relation to the Summer season and even though the Summer here in the UK this year has been pretty appalling, I seem to completely lose my mojo for getting out there and making the most of it.

Occasionally though, things come together and a happy couple of hours is spent out in the woods, enjoying what nature can offer. Whilst it’s true the photography suffers, being out in the landscape certainly does wonders for the mental health & I should remember this more often and get out there just for the fun of it.

Travelling light Travelling light with just my trusty Leica M10-P & Summicron 50mm f2 takes away the constant turmoil of what to set and how… with a prime lens you find your composition and shoot the image.

At the end of the day if there’s a real banger of a composition, you can always use the time as a research option.

This example is one of 250 Shermans supplied to Holland from the United States Army after WW2, 30 of which were M4(105)s. Rescued from Dutch ranges in the 1990’s, she has now been restored to full running condition and carries her genuine serial number. Armourgeddon Military Museum Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, UK 8th August 2021 The following information on this M4(105) is from preservedtanks.com:- “This Sherman was at the Poteau Museum for some years then went to Guy Gilis in Belgium before being bought by Armourgeddon in July 2010. Overall it was largely complete internally. However the running gear required a lot of attention and the engine was in a poor state, due in part to the oily petrol residue and burning resulting from being used as a target for petrol bombs. Many Sherman tanks were used as Molotov cocktail training aids on Dutch ranges. Because of environmental concerns they were all removed in about the 1980s. This one was deemed not recoverable, which is why it initially survived the so-called ‘Tank Slag’ (tank battle), the clean-up of the ranges. At some point in time it was still going to be recovered and sent off for scrap, but Hanno Spoelstra, together with a RNLA Major, secured its future in the early 1990s. At that time “USA 30104238” was still barely visible on its side. It was found out that it was one of thirty M4 (105) Shermans supplied to the Netherlands by the USA through MDAP from 1951 onwards, out of a total of about 250. Later it was traded to a group of restorers in exchange for parts and restoration work on an M10 with 17-pdr gun. This group sold it to the museum in Belgium. The Sherman arrived at Armourgeddon in January 2011, and the engine was removed the same month. It has since been more completely dismantled so that it can undergo a complete restoration. The turret was removed in March and stripped, sand blasted and repainted in May 2011. The hull since has been sand blasted and repainted. Most internal components are out of the hull and are being restored and repainted before being replaced back inside. The engine was first run up in November 2011.”

「カガヤのDO・KU・DA・NNレビュー」 第1回 Mr.Children『Atomic Heart』

サァサ始まりました、「カガヤのDO・KU・DA・NNレビュー」。

外出自粛期間中、なにか自宅で毎日、日課になるようなことはないか、だれかの暇つぶしになるようなことはできないかという思いから、独断と偏見にまみれたアルバムレビューを始めてみることにしました。

最近タンブラーでは日記みたいなものをつらつら書いとりましたが、緊急事態宣言による自粛期間が終わるまでは一時中断、こっちの「カガヤのDO・KU・DA・NNレビュー」を進めていきたいと思います。がんばってなるべく毎日更新したいと(現時点では)思ってます。なにかと家でやらにゃあいけんこともあるので、毎日できなかったらすいません。おっと需要があるわけでもないし、謝る必要性はありませんでしたね。

僕は移動中に音楽を聴くのが好きで実際そうして音楽を聴いてる時間がおそらく一番長いんですけど、移動を制限されているこの時世ではあまりゆっくり音楽を聴くタイミングも得られず、これが音楽聴き直しの良い機会にもなるかなっていう思いもあります。

どのアルバムをレビューするかも自分の好きなように決めていくつもりですが、ないと思いますが、あるわけありませんが、もしリクエスト等あれば受け付けます。

では早速いきます。

記念すべき第1回はMr.Childrenの『Atomic Heart』。

僕が幼いころからずっと好きなバンド、ミスチル。

ミスチルが訳分らんぐらいのブレイクを果たした訳分らんほど売れたアルバムです。4枚目。

M1「Printing」はプリンタの音がシャーシャー言ってるインスト曲。曲というかアルバムのイントロ的なヤツ。ミスチルはアルバムの冒頭にこういうの持ってくるの多いです。ミスチルはみんなが思ってるより”アルバムミュージシャン”なんだよ。ただダーリンダーリンとかもう一回もう一回とか言ってるバンドじゃない。アルバムというものへの拘りというか作り込みがすごい。みんなもミスチルのヒット曲だけ聴くのはやめてアルバムを聴いたほうがいい。この曲はそのまま次の「Dance Dance Dance」に繋がります。

「Dance Dance Dance」 はライブでもよく演奏される。「この時期のミスチル感」みたいなものがあるとすればそういう感じ。イントロから繰り返されるギターリフがカッコいい。サビが2重構造になってて実は不思議な曲。珍しい(というか他の曲では聴いたことないような気がする)ベースソロもある。

M3「ラヴ コネクション」もすごく好きです。全体的にローリング・ストーンズっぽい。というかまんま。こんなことも難なくやってのけるのがミスチル。

ロックめな曲が2曲続いたあと、���裂ヒットした「innocent world」がやってきます。ミスチルの代表曲といえばコレ、といっても過言ではない。ライブでも高確率で演奏される。ライブでこれがきたらあと2、3曲で本編終わりかな、っていうヤツ。これがJ-POPだと言わんばかりの展開に打ちのめされます。ミスターマイセルフ。

続く「クラスメイト」がこれまた名曲です。いわゆるマイナー曲ですが僕はすごく好きな曲です。なんならこのアルバムで一番好きぐらいあります。めちゃくちゃJ-POPなんやけど裏には洋楽の感じがあるのがすごくいい。The Smith歌謡といったら言い過ぎかもしれないけどそういう感じ。80～90年の洋楽の音の感じがジャストマッチング。要はちょっとネオアコっぽいんですよね。それが良い。ミスチルはやっぱりUSよりUKっぽいですねえ。そこが僕を引き付ける要因なのかもしれません。

M6「CROSS ROAD」はミスチルが「innocent world」で”特大ヒット”を飛ばす直前、”大ヒット”ぐらいのを飛ばした曲です。個人的には「innocent world」よりこっちのほうが好きです。歌詞にビートルズの曲名「Ticket To Ride」が出てきます。

M7「ジェラシー」はマッドチェスター的なサイケデリックさもあるドラム打ち込みの曲。僕的にはこの曲はまあまあ。他が好きすぎるので。

次の「Asia(エイジア)」はなんとドラムのJENさんによる作曲。桜井さん以外のメンバーが作曲したのもっと聴きたいな。なんかよくわからない特殊な雰囲気がある。アジアっぽいのかもよくわかりません。

M9「Rain」はM10「雨のち晴れ」の導入曲で、ただの雨音。こういう演出やっぱ好き。

「雨のち晴れ」 、めちゃくちゃ好きなんやけどライブで聴いたことない気がする...。たぶんミスチルファンもみんな好きなやつ。M7「ジェラシー」をマッドチェスターっぽいって言ったけどこの曲のほうが断然マッドチェスターです。気だるいです。でも踊れます。なんかのカップリングに入ってるリミックスヴァージョンはこれに輪をかけるようにもっとマッドチェスターです。歌詞もダラッとしててこういうミスチルも好き。

いよいよ終盤、M11「Round About ～孤独の肖像～」。これは2回のポップサウルスのライブの両方で演ってた(おそらく)。個人的にこの曲はミスチルには要らない古臭さがあるような気がして正直そこまで好きじゃない。でもライブ行ったらノリノリでした。

ラストM12「Over」。はい出た。名曲。曲名の通り失恋の曲です。歌詞とそれを乗せるメロディ、展開、アレンジ、全て満点だなこりゃ。ライブのMCで桜井さんはこの曲の仮タイトルが「2ビートでKAN」だったと言っていた。いやそれに関してはよくわからん。KAN全然聴いたことないので。ポールマッカートニー的なリ��ムのピアノがどことないブリティッシュ感・ポップ感・せつなさを演出。てかこの曲めっちゃビートルズ。「中期以降のポップなビートルズ」って感じ。なんかメロトロンっぽい音も聴こえるし。そして「ウーアー」系のコーラス(歌詞を歌ってハモるコーラスじゃないやつ)がほんまめちゃくちゃ良い。好きやわ～。最後Aメロに戻るのもいいわあ～。

以上、いちおう全曲さらいました。ミスチルは聴き込み度が全然違うので全曲さらえましたが今後のレビューでいけるかは分かりませんのであしからず。

僕のミスチルのフェイバリット・アルバムはもっと他にあるんですけど、初回からあんまりマイナーなのいってもなぁっていう思いもあり今回は『Atomic Heart』のレビューを書きました。レビューっていう程のものでもないんですけどね。音楽理論とかもわからないのでただの感想文になってますよね。

改めてじっくり1曲1曲聴き直して文章にするのもいいですね。需要は全くないと思いますが続けていきます。90年代のアルバムではありますが、Mr.Childrenの『Atomic Heart』、かなり入りやすいほうのアルバムだと思うので皆さんもぜひ聴いてはいかがでしょうか。
