‘Kit’ Project.

Hi, Welcome back to Beginners Journey into Leather Craft here @HandMadeCP. This week I’m covering a subject that many people may consider when first looking into Leather Craft as a hobby and that is ‘Kits’. I tried one when I first started , I didn’t have a clue but felt I’d like to try something. So this small project is aimed especially at complete beginners in the hope that it might inspire them to look more into this amazing subject and take it further. This week it’s a ‘Tandy’ Kit from Tandy Leather Co’. The prices can range widely, the bigger the Kit the heftier the price tag so I went small to start, Here I have a build along set for the ‘Business Card Wallet’ Kit, cost is under Twenty GB pounds.(UK).

Pic 1 : Here’s the Kit I purchased from Tandy leather, they have everything you need to complete the project in terms of materials but you will need a few tools to make it, throughout these pics I’ll show the tools I used. I use my ‘Kits’ as Templates so the first thing I did was make another, I have some nice leather , deer skin I think, it’s very soft, looks good and feels nice to the touch.

Pic 2 : I drew the template shapes onto the deer skin showing the holes needed.

Pic 3 : This leather is so thin and soft I was able to cut it nicely with scissors and use the stitch awl to make the stitch holes. Using the revolving punch pliers I made other different sized holes, the snap stud holes and the rivet holes as shown. From this point on the build is exactly as you would do with this Kit.

Pic 4 : Using the snap stud provided in the kit you can use the stud set machines like the one shown or if not available to you, (As not cheap) you can purchase a ‘setting’ tool and anvil for a reasonable price, which..with a bit of practice you should be able to set the snap stud just fine, it’s not too difficult to learn and if you ask at the store they are usually happy to give a demonstration.

Pic 6 : When I started my Blog over two and a half years ago I promised to show my mistakes too in the hope of saving others from making the same errors, here you can see an extra piece  with a messed up snap stud hole, this came from not noticing that the dyes I had on the machine were not for this particular stud and it messed it up, I drilled the stud out but it left a bad mess as shown...so lesson learned and move on, so remember if using the machines...’check’ the dyes lol..duh. I quickly made another piece and moved forward.

Pic 9 : With the waxed thread and needle provided in the kit make a saddle stitch through the stitch line starting by doubling it over the edge as shown and the same at the finish end. You can learn saddle stitch by looking up youtube videos which will demonstrate it, it’s not difficult to pick up but it can appear that way if you’ve never tried before.

 These little kits are not too expensive and the instructions are easy to follow. I remember the first one I made, I was really pleased to have been able to complete something and it opened my eyes to all the other possibilities this amazing hobby offers. I’ve been so busy finishing up project work that I simply didn’t have the time to journey up to New Hampshire to get the sliding table and associated components back from the machinist Rees. They took it upon themselves to deliver it last week, which I consider fantastic service.

After my last trip to site to install, I came back to the shop and decided the first order of business, after I had put stuff away, would be to put the sliding table back on the saw. I figured this might take half a day. Hah!

I laid out the various fasteners that would be going back in place:

On my saw, one of the factory handles was missing and a handle from a Robinson machine had been fitted instead. First off, I  looked to see what might be available in terms of a replacement handle. That was nothing available from suppliers of Wadkin parts, which was but little surprise. The complicating factor in what otherwise would be a simple matter of replacing the handles is that most of the fasteners on this saw are in British Standard Whitworth (BSW), not UNC. In many sizes, the number of threads per inch between BSW and UNC is the same, and a UNC fastener can often be simply screwed into a hole threaded for BSW thread, especially if the hole is slightly worn. However when you get to the 1/2″ bolt size, the TPI is different, Whitworth having 12 TPI and UNC having 13.

If the handles were UNC it would be a simple affair, but they were not. However, the handles attached to the casting by way of double-ended threaded studs, and I found a threaded stud manufacturer in Britain who would custom-make me some threaded studs which had BSW threads on one end, and UNC on the other. Cost me about $40 for four of them, plus shipping.

To think, it wasn’t too long ago that Arsenal were aesthetic champions of the Premier League. They weren’t actual champions, mind, but even when they lost 3-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion or drew 4-4 with Newcastle they did so in style. Now, even that title is lost to them, with City making a mockery of the idea that Arsenal are a watchable outfit. While Pep Guardiola and co. are young, lithe and full of life, Arsene Wenger and his team are so outmoded at this point they’re practically mummified.

Delicious Shirtenfreude

It may not be easy to look at, but please take a moment to appreciate the shirt Sam Allardyce wore on Match of the Day. Nothing shouts “Big Sam sends Bill Kenwright provocative come-and-get-me plea” like a man blouse with an enormous open collar, cheque elbow patches and a red-white-and-blue plaid trim. While Sam’s attire may have had yer da calling up M&S and asking whether he could order in bulk, the rest of us were too busy wondering whether the colour scheme was a deliberate act of patriotism–or if Big Sam asks for the Union Jack’s colours to be woven into the fabric of all his clothes, an act of respect towards our Queen, Waterloo, our way of life and our decision to sack off the European Union.

Having repeated his call for more opportunities for British managers on the programme (“It’s always time for an English manager to be given a chance, as far as I’m concerned, Gary,” said the man who once claimed he’d be a top-four manager if his name was Sam Allardici), we can only assume Big Sam was doubling down on that sentiment with his sartorial choices.

Spirit of Cantona

The incident may have taken place in the Europa League on Thursday, but the spirit of a Premier League icon was awakened this weekend. After former Manchester United right-back Patrice Evra karate kicked a Marseille supporter in the head in the midweek, it was hard not to spend the latest round of fixtures waiting for someone else to channel their inner Cantona and launch themselves studs-up at an abusive dickhead in the stands.

If we’re honest, as fans, we can all think of a time we deserved to be kicked in the head by a footballer. As such, if Evra really has opened the floodgates of player-on-spectator violence in the Premier League, maybe we’ll all learn a lesson or two about moderating our criticism and not saying despicable things.
