Due South: RayV/Benton

Many years ago I wrote a multi-episode multi-fandom story called The Games, set in someone else's universe without permission (the Keptverse) and discovered halfway through that the creator didn't like what I was doing because she wanted the Keptverse to be RPF and my story was set in Chicago in the Keptverse and all of the characters were borrowed from my favourite series. In my story, Sam Gerard is the commander of an awkward squad of U.S. Marshals - a stray Brit, George Cowley: two seconded from the FBI, Dana Scully and Adam Pierson: the most recent recruits are fleeing something that happened California and the others can't quite figure out why Sam hired them, Rupert Giles and Willow Rosenberg: and: A former Chicago cop and a former Mountie, Ray Vecchio and Benton Fraser.

The only married couple in the team.

In the Keptverse, slavery is the law of the United States of North America, and the story opens when Sam buys Richard Kimble, sentenced to slavery for the murder of his wife, from what was meant to be a death sentence in the arena. Plot ensues.

This is an ensemble story, and while all of Gerard's team have POV chapters, none of them are the main characters - the protagonist/antagonist pair are Sam Gerard and Richard Kimble. But we meet both Benton and Ray in the first chapter of part 1, the opening story "The Games":

The kitchen was a big room with a table large enough for eight: there were files spread over half the surface, and a dark-haired man sitting reading through one of them, a cup of coffee beside him. “Ray,” Benton said, “are you busy?” “Benny!” The man sounded startled. “I thought Sam had a job for you? Who’s this? Hey, Will.” “What do you like to eat?” the young woman – Will? – Willow? – asked. She sounded as if she wanted to know, and Kimble realised after a moment she was asking him. He shrugged. He couldn’t think of an answer that sounded right. He was quite anxious to hear what Benton would say. But all Benton said was “Sam wanted him to have something to eat. Ray, are there any ready meals in the freezer?” “Ready meal?” Ray stood up. “Or something out of a can. I’m sure Sam didn’t mean us to go to any trouble. Besides, we still have thirteen files to read through on the Trenton case.” Benton paused a beat. “Of course, we can always take some of them home.” “Oh hell,” Ray said, “I’ll cook. Sit down. Will, are you hungry? You – what’s your name? – anything you don’t eat?”

Ray Veccho and Benton Fraser work so well as a married couple.

“Benny, what the hell are you planning?” Ray pulled back, staring him in the face, his hands still on Benton’s shoulders. “What makes you think I’m planning anything?” “Because you just told me you loved me!” “Well, I do.” “I know that. You never say it. You never, ever say it. Not in so many words.” “Well, I’m sorry about that, Ray.” “What the hell are you planning? I love you too.” “I know that.” “Good.”

(The West Wing and M*A*S*H and Cagney and Lacey and House MD show up in The Games too, because of course they do.) I loved watching Ray Vecchio and Benton Fraser find their way into friendship with eahc other. I only ever wrote one other Due South story - Follow the Leader, about Ray kissing Fraser - but they were such a great couple and I'd love having more stories set in Chicago where they just happen to be. Both of them. Thanks to @ds30below for reminding me of how much I loved the two of them and their relationship!

In the soft blue Twilight of the evening, Rupert Giles walked into the pink bedroom adorned with stuffed animals, only stopping once near the nightstand to make sure he turned the nightlight on. Moving toward the bed, he smiled at the small child who seemed dwarfed by the large bed as he tucked her into bed.

“There you are, darling. All ready for bed.” He placed a kiss to her head, listening to her soft giggle. “Have a good sleep and sweet dreams, my little love.” He said, and walked back toward the door, turning out the light.

“Daddy, wait!” She called, and grabbed his hand to stop him from leaving.

He paused and turned around. “What’s the matter, Buffy?”

“I don’t wanna go to sleep.”

“I know you don’t want to, sweetheart, but you had your story, your glass of water, and your bedtime song. That means it’s time to close your eyes and sleep, alright?”

“I don’t want bad dreams.”

“That’s what your nightlight and dream catcher is for. It makes the monsters and bad dreams go away so that you can have good dreams.”

“But what if I have one?”

“Like what?” He asked, going over to her and looking at her intently. She’d used plenty of tactics to try and get out of going to sleep, but her panic at his leaving and the honesty in her questions had been genuine, as he was in the position to know.

She ducked her head down, fidgeting anxiously with the pink blanket she refused to go to bed without. “It’s bad to say.” She said softly.

He sat on the side of her bed. “Even if it is, Daddy can’t help you feel better if you don’t say what’s scaring you.” He said, and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear as she slowly looked up at him.

“I don’t want to die.” She said, her hazel eyes boring into him.

His eyebrows knitted themselves together. “Where did you get an idea like that, Poppet? You’re going to be alive for a very long time.”

“Nuh-Uh.” She said, softly. “The lady said so.”

“Lady? What lady?”

“The face paint lady.” She said, and clutched onto his shirt. “I don’t want to see her again, Daddy. Make her go away.”

“Where exactly did you see her?”

“She was in my bad dream.”

“She was, was she?” He said, and wrapped a comforting arm around her, feeling her nod and cuddle into his side.

“She was scary.”

“She sounds very scary. But she was just a bad dream, Lovey. Nothing more. She can’t hurt you, I promise.”

“But she hurt you, Daddy.”

“What?”

“When I died because of her.”

At those words, he felt the air get knocked out of him in a sudden punch to the gut. In spite of his shock, he managed to speak. “What are you talking about?”

“She took me away from you.” Came the soft whimper. “She made me fight the monsters, and when they hurt me, the water got in me so that all the air was gonned. But she got mad at me when I took a big breath with all the air and I came back from being gonned. So she told me that it was my present for somebody else, and she made a big circle in the sky and told me to go in it. I didn’t get to say goodbye.” Her face screwed up in upset, and her grip was so tight he might have thought to be afraid she’d break him if it hadn’t been for the growing horror building up inside of him and making him so nauseous he thought he might vomit. “Don’t let her take me away, Daddy. I don’t want to go away.”

For a moment, he found himself absolutely speechless at her words, before he wrapped his arms around her tightly in an attempt to fit all the broken pieces of her back together as she fell apart. “Nobody is taking you anywhere.” He promised, and pressed a kiss to her head. “My poor little love. That must have been very scary.”

“Make her go away, Daddy.” She sniffled.

“The face paint lady was just a bad dream, Kitten. She wasn’t real. And now that you told me about her, she won’t be able to scare you like that again.”

“How come?”

“Because when you talk about bad dreams like her, they get scared when they find out somebody knows about them, and they can’t scare you like they did before, because they know someone is watching.”

She looked up at him, brown eyes teary and wide- far too innocent for her to have said what she’d said to him. But it was nothing compared to what she said next that sent a shiver down his spine.

“She said it was ‘cause you were bad, Daddy.”

“What?”

“She said you were Watching me and you didn’t help me. She said you were bad before and you got punished and somebody died. But you wouldn’t be bad and let her punish me… would you?”

He hadn’t felt the tear run down his cheek until it was too late to keep her from seeing it. “Of course not.” It was a hoarse whisper.

“You would make her go away?”

“Of course.”

“And keep me safe?”

“Of course I would.” He said, and pressed a gentle kiss to her head. “You don’t ever have to worry about that.”

“Am I safe with you Daddy? Really?”

“What do you mean, sweetheart? Of course you are.” He said, and held her in a tight hug, trying to pour every ounce of reassurance he could into her, even though he couldn’t reassure himself.

“Giles.”

The sound of his name being called made him whip around almost instantly, standing in front of his Daughter protectively. In the doorway, A young woman with short red hair stood, looking at him with slight concern.

“Who are you? What do you want?” He called, and felt his daughter’s small hands twisting into the back of his shirt, as he heard her whimper quietly.

“Daddy…”

“It’s alright, darling.” He said, and scooped her onto his hip without taking his eyes off of her.

“My name’s Willow. I’m a witch. You’re stuck in a Nightmare, Giles. I’m here to get you out.”

“What the bloody hell are you talking about?”

“You’re a Watcher, remember? And you were there with us when we were fighting another witch. I was the only one who got a shield up in time to block her. Everyone else got hit with her spell. I need your help to get everyone else out.”

“I don’t know you.” He said.

“No, but I know you, and I can prove it. You’re from London, England. You can play the acoustic guitar and sing. You love cross referencing and the smell of books. You used to be called Ripper and you hung around with Warlocks like Ethan and summoned Eyghon with him for fun. I know you and I need your help to help save my friends. Otherwise they won’t get out, and neither will you.”

“I can’t help you. I’m not a Watcher anymore.”

“Yes you can. Buffy needs you.”

“What are you talking about, she’s right-“ He started, before he realized he no longer felt her familiar weight on his hip, and it made his heart drop into his stomach. For the instant that he was too stunned by what happened to speak, Willow interjected.

“If you want to save her, then you need to come with me. There’s still time to help her, but I can’t do this without you. I need to know how to wake everyone up, and if you can handle the research, I can handle the magic. Please. I need your help. Buffy needs your help. If you don’t want to help me, then at least help her.”

He turned slowly to the bed, his hand reaching for her pink blanket. The one she couldn’t sleep without and still took everywhere because it smelled like him. His hands ran over the soft cashmere fabric. Was it really only a nightmare then? Would he simply wake up only for all of this to simply be a bad memory? But if his daughter needed his help, then what choice did he have? Still holding her pink blanket, he turned back to the woman in the doorway, and slowly nodded.

“Okay. Let’s go.”

This all stemmed from my need to write a mob au and an inside joke. As well as the fact that Anakin deserved to have a not fucked up life. The title says it all. The Les Mis, Hamilton, and Buffy are basically cameos, the main parts is Star Wars and Fantastic Beasts, as well as some original characters. Very basically, what would happen if you had a small town added two mobs and threw in a serial killer? You get this fic.
